There is an increasing recognition of the strong links between the gut microbiome and the brain,and there is persuasive evidence that the gut microbiome plays a role in a variety of physiological processes in the central nervous system.This review summarizes findings that gut microbial composition alterations are linked to hippocampal neurogenesis,as well as the possible mechanisms of action;the existing literature suggests that microbiota influence neurogenic processes,which can result in neurological disorders.We consider this evidence from the perspectives of neuroinflammation,microbial-derived metabolites,neurotrophins,and neurotransmitters.Based on the existing research,we propose that the administration of probiotics can normalize the gut microbiome.This could therefore also represent a promising treatment strategy to counteract neurological impairment.

Simulation study of the purification system for indoor oil mist control in machining factories

High-concentration oil mists can cause serious health problems to workers,which are generally mitigated by ventilation and purification systems.However,the coupling relationship between these systems is not clear.In this study,the effects of purifier outlet direction,purification air volume,installation height,and purification efficiency on indoor oil mist distribution were investigated by numerical simulation using an actual machining factory.The mitigation of oil mist in various combinations of ventilation and purification systems was also discussed.The results show that the outlet direction of the purifier has a great influence on the distribution of oil mist in the factory,and the maximum difference of oil mist concentration in the breathing zone under different orientations is 17%.The best purifier outlet direction is vertically upward.When the purifier outlet direction is upward,a larger purification air volume is beneficial for contaminant removal,and a lower purifier exhaust installation height is helpful for oil mist discharge from the bottom of the factory and reducing the concentration of oil mist in the breathing area.The oil mist concentration of purifier exhaust increases from 0 to 2 mg/m^(3) and the oil mist concentration in the breathing zone increases by 67%.The combined system of purification system with the roof exhaust system and displacement ventilation system has the optimal pollution removal efficiency and the lowest concentration of oil mist in the breathing zone compared to other systems.The research results can provide a reference for the design,installation,and operation of ventilation and purification systems in machining factories.

Synchronization has great impacts in various fields such as self-clocking,communication,and neural networks.Here,we present a mechanism of synchronization for two mechanical modes in two coupled optomechanical resonators with a parity-time(PT)-symmetric structure.It is shown that the degree of synchronization between the two far-off-resonant mechanical modes can be increased by decreasing the coupling strength between the two optomechanical resonators due to the large amplification of optomechanical interaction near the exceptional point.Additionally,when we consider the stochastic noises in the optomechanical resonators by working near the exceptional point,we find that more noises can enhance the degree of synchronization of the system under a particular parameter regime.Our results open up a new dimension of research for PT-symmetric systems and synchronization.

Water pollution caused by dye is a serious challenge.Herein,we use a novel discharge process to functionalize carbon nanotube(CNT)by COOH groups to form CNT30 for removing methyl red(MR)from water.By pristine CNT,75%MR is removed in 60 min,with an adsorption capacity of 68.44 mg g-1.By CNT30,85%MR is fast removed in only 5 min,and the removal efficiency reaches to 95%after 30 min,with an adsorption capacity of80.33 mg g-1.Thus,a higher MR removal efficiency is achieved in a much shorter time on CNT30.Moreover,CNT30 has an outstanding reusability,with the MR removal efficiency decreasing by only 7%after ten cycles.The COOH groups on CNT30 improve the hydrophilicity of CNT30,thus promoting the interaction of MR in water with CNT30.The hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction of MR with the COOH groups on CNT30 could be the force to drive MR adsorption on CNT30.The higher COOH content could be the origin for the better performance of CNT30 in removing dye from water.The discharge process developed herein is operated in O2,without using harmful substances,and the COOH content on CNT can be efficiently tuned by simply changing discharge time.This is different from the chemical modification widely used to functionalize CNT by strong oxidants,e.g.,HNO_(3).The present work is of great significance to realize green construction of materials for more efficiently removing dye from water.

An approach for the construction of crystalline porous supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) via outer-surface interactions of cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) with high yield is presented. This approach enables the noncovalent integration of guest molecules into ordered topologies and creates new host-guest-complex-based SOFs;i.e., the topology can be predesigned and constructed by using [ZnCl_(4)]^(2-) anions to induce the formation of solid Q[6]-SOFs, and the pore wall surface can be easily modified by the Q[6]-encapsulated guest molecules. In addition, one of prepared solid Q[6]-SOFs showed a high drug-loading capacity and smart potential release control for drug-delivery applications.

Effect of renal denervation for patients with isolated systolic hypertension:a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Renal denervation(RDN)is a promising treatment based on catheter intervention for patients with refractory hypertension.However,the effect in patients with isolated systolic hypertension(ISH)remains controversial.The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the blood pressure lowing effect of RDN in patients with ISH compared with combined systolic/diastolic hypertension(CH)patients.METHODS PubMed,Embase,Cochrane and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for prospective clinical studies that included RDN.The outcomes of interest were the change of 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure(SBP)from baseline.We used the fixed effects model to calculate weighted mean difference(WMD)with 95%confidence interval(CI).RESULTS Six trials were included,with 1405 participants,including 597 patients with ISH and 808 patients with CH.Mean follow-up was five months.The reduction of 24-hour ambulatory SBP was significantly greater for the CH patients than the ISH patients(WMD=3.89,95%CI:2.32–5.45,P<0.0001).RDN also showed a greater reduction in office SBP in the CH patients compared to the ISH patients(WMD=10.24,95%CI:4.24–15.74,P=0.0003).And the effect was independent of age,length of follow-up,and ablation device.CONCLUSIONS RDN provides superior blood pressure control in the CH patients compared with the ISH patients,and the CH patients may be the best suitable population for which RDN is indicated.

Biofi lms often impose harmful infl uences in many niches involving food contamination,antibiotics resistance,and environmental issues.However,eradicating biofi lms remains diffi cultly because the formation mechanism of biofi lms is still incompletely clarifi ed.Here,we attempted to explore the regulatory role of magnesium(Mg^(2+))on biofi lm formation in Escherichia coli(E.coli)using phenotype visualization with targeted metabolomics method.We found that Mg^(2+)could exert signifi cant infl uence on biofi lm formation with a concentration dependency by regulating phenotypic morphology and triggering metabolic modifi cations of biofi lm.Phenotypic imaging revealed that increasing concentration of Mg^(2+)gradually inhibited biofi lm formation,Mg^(2+)was observed to restore the microstructure of E.coli strain in biofi lms to that in the relevant planktonic cells.In addition,our metabolomics analysis characterized 20 diff erential metabolites and associated two metabolic pathways including nucleotide metabolism and amino acid metabolism that were notably modifi ed during biofi lm formation under the treatments of varied Mg^(2+).Altogether,our work provides a novel insight into the infl uence of Mg^(2+)on biofi lm formation at a metabolic level,which is implicated in the novel solution to disturb biofi lm formation through the regulation of Mg^(2+)and functional metabolite interaction.

Mechanistic Study on the Dominant Promotion Effect of Al-/Ti-/Zr-modifications over the VOx/SiO2 UHMWPE Catalysts

Recently, we reported the first VOx/SiO2 ethylene polymerization catalyst for making Cl-free UHMWPE, and found the dominant promotion effects of Al-/Ti-/Zr-modifications over this catalyst system(Macromol. Chem. Phys. 2017, 218, 1600443). In this work, density functional theory is applied to investigate the underlying mechanism of this remarkable promotion effect of Al-/Ti-/Zrmodifications on a molecular and atomic level. The cluster model with V(Ⅲ) is found to be the most possible active site due to its lowest overall energy barrier for monomer insertion, though the process of C2H4 coordination and the subsequent formation of transition state are most energy favored for V(Ⅱ) species. By modifying one of or both V―O―Si in the active model with V―O―M(M = Al, Ti, or Zr),the energy barrier for the binding of the upcoming C2H4 gets lower(particularly for Al-and Zr-modified catalysts), and the transition state also becomes more stable. Generally, the insertion process of C2H4 gets easier after support Al-/Ti-/Zr-modifications. This dominant promotion effect is partially ascribed to the more enriched positive charge distribution on or nearby the V center, and the narrower energy gap between the LUMO of model catalysts and the HOMO of C2H4 for these modified catalysts also contributes much. In addition, the decreased steric hindrance around the V center should be taken into account for the modified models as well. Furthermore, the Br?nsted acidity of the catalysts is investigated by introducing a pendent hydroxyl group to the model catalysts, which has a close contact with the V center. Similar promotion effect of support modification by Al, Ti, and Zr could still be observed.
