Spatial heterogeneity and compositional profiles of dissolved organic matter in farmland soils across China' Mainland

Dissolved organic matter(DOM) plays an essential role in many geochemical processes,however its complexity, chemical diversity, and molecular composition are poorly understood. Soil samples were collected from 500 vegetable fields in administrative regions of China' Mainland, of which 122 were selected for further investigation. DOM properties were characterized by three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix(3D-EEM) fuorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry(FTICRMS)(field intensity is 15 Tesla). Our results indicated that the main constituents were UVA humic-like substances, humic-like substances, fulvic acid-like substances, and tyrosine-like substances. A total of 10,989 molecular formulae with a mass range of 100.04 to 799.59 Da were detected, covering the mass spectrometric information of the soil samples from 27 different regions. CHO and CHON molecules were dominant in DOM, whereas lignin, tannins,and aromatic substances served as the main components. The results of cluster analysis revealed that the soil properties in Jiangxi Province were considerably different from those in other regions. The key backgrounds of the DOM molecular characteristics in the vegetablefield soil samples across China' Mainland were provided at the molecular level, with large abundance and great variability.

Exploring the impact of non-small cell lung cancer tumor microbiome on the efficacy of chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors

Background:This study aimed to investigate the potential of intratumoral microbiota,gut microbiome,peripheral blood T-cell subsets,and inflammatory markers as predictive biomarkers for antitumor efficacy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.Methods:This study observed patients with metastatic non-driver mutation non-small cell lung cancer who were initially diagnosed at the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University’s Department of Oncology from August 2021 to July 2022 and completed at least four cycles of chemotherapy combined with immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment.Lung biopsy tissues,fecal,and peripheral blood samples were collected from these patients.Based on the efficacy of the combined chemotherapy and immunotherapy,patients were divided into an effective group and an ineffective group.The tumor microbiota,gut microbiome,peripheral blood T-cell subsets,and inflammatory markers were compared between the two groups.The lung and fecal microbiota were analyzed using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing.Flow cytometry was used to detect T-cell subsets,and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to measure inflammatory factors.Results:A total of 21 patients were observed.There were significant differences in the tumor microbiota between the responsive and non-responsive groups,particularly the proportion of the genera Sphingomonas and Pseudomonas.The gut microbiome composition changed after treatment,but there were no differences between the two groups before treatment.There were no significant differences in T-cell subsets and inflammatory markers between the responsive and non-responsive groups.Conclusion:The composition of intratumoral microbiota in non-small cell lung cancer patients may serve as an indicator of response to chemotherapy combined with immunotherapy.The predictive value of gut microbiota,T-cell subsets,and inflammatory markers appears limited.Future research should further validate the predictive role of changes in gut microbiota on treatment outcomes.

Cuproptosis,a novel mechanism of programmed cell death,has not been fully explored in the context of spermatogenic cells.Thisstudy investigated the potential involvement of cuproptosis in spermatogenic cell death using a mouse model of copper overload.Sixty male Institute of Cancer Research(ICR)mice were randomly divided into four groups that received daily oral gavage withsodium chloride(control)or copper sulfate(CuSO4)at 50 mg kg−1,100 mg kg−1,or 200 mg kg−1,for 42 consecutive days.Micesubjected to copper overload exhibited a disruption in copper homeostasis.Additionally,significant upregulated expression of keycuproptosis factors was accompanied by a significant rise in the rates of testicular tissue cell apoptosis.Immunohistochemicalanalysis revealed the presence of ferredoxin 1(Fdx1)in Sertoli cells,Leydig cells,and spermatogenic cells at various stages oftesticular development,and the Fdx1-positive staining area was significantly increased in copper-overloaded mice.Mitochondrialdysfunction and decreased adenosine triphosphate levels were also observed,further implicating mitochondrial damage undercuproptosis.Further analyses revealed pathological lesions and blood−testis barrier destruction in the testicular tissue,accompaniedby decreased sperm concentration and motility,in copper-overloaded mice.In summary,our results indicate that copper-overloadedmice exhibit copper homeostasis disorder in the testicular tissue and that cuproptosis participates in spermatogenic cell death.These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying spermatogenic cell death and provide initialexperimental evidence for the occurrence of cuproptosis in the testis.

Investigation on the influence of vortex generator on particle resuspension

The vortex generator(VG)and its well-known effect in flow optimization are widely studied and employed across different engineering sectors.However,while the same working principles of VG may be well suited for the applications on surface-cleaning technologies,such promising potential is hardly,if any,explored in the published literature.Therefore,in the present study,the influence on flow-induced particle resuspension brought by a rectangular vG in a channel flow is investigated with the help of highfidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations.Substantial increases of particle removal forces and resuspension rates are discovered in long,strip-like regions with reduced boundary-layer thickness resulted from the vG-induced vortices,and the enhancement effect is especially significant for configurations with the VG installed at a greater angle of attack.It is also shown that while the resuspension enhancements on the lower and the upper surfaces of the channel exhibit distinct statistical characteristics,having a VG in the channel improves the overall particle-removing capability of the channel flow by introducing higher surface-averaged removal forces and particle resuspension rates.Last but not least,the increase of resuspension rate is especially significant for the smaller,micron-scale particles which are otherwise hardly disturbed by a VG-less channel flow,and such resuspension-enhancement effectgenerally subsides with increasing particle size.

Feedback of Efficient Shock Acceleration on Magnetic-field Structure Inside Young Type Ia Supernova Remnants

Using an effective adiabatic index γeffto mimic the feedback of efficient shock acceleration, we simulate the temporal evolution of a young type Ia supernova remnant （SNR） with two different background magnetic field（BMF） topologies:a uniform and a turbulent BMF. The density distribution and magnetic-field characteristics of our benchmark SNR are studied with two-dimensional cylindrical magnetohydrodynamic simulations. When γeffis considered, we find that:（1） the two-shock structure shrinks and the downstream magnetic-field orientation is dominated by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability structures;（2） there exists more quasi-radial magnetic fields inside the shocked region; and （3） inside the intershock region, both the quasi-radial magnetic energy density and the total magnetic energy density are enhanced:in the radial direction, with γeff=1.1, they are amplified about 10–26 times more than those with γeff=5/3. While in the angular direction, the total magnetic energy densities could be amplified about 350 times more than those with γeff=5/3, and there are more grid cells within the intershock region where the magnetic energy density is amplified by a factor greater than 100.

Risk factors for postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder after emergency admission

BACKGROUND:Postpartum posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD)can occur in women who give birth after emergency admission.The identification of risk factors for this condition is crucial for developing effective preventive measures.This retrospective study aimed to explore the incidence and risk factors for postpartum PTSD in women who give birth after emergency admission.METHODS:Medical records of women who gave birth after emergency admission were collected between March 2021 and April 2023.The patients’general conditions and perinatal clinical indicators were recorded.The puerperae were divided into PTSD group and control group based on symptom occurrence at six weeks postpartum.Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors.RESULTS:A total of 276 puerperae were included,with a PTSD incidence of 20.3% at six weeks postpartum.Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified emergency cesarean section(odds ratio[OR]=2.102;95%confidence interval[CI]:1.114-3.966,P=0.022),admission to the emergency department after midnight(12:00 AM)(OR=2.245;95%CI:1.170-4.305,P<0.001),and cervical dilation(OR=3.203;95%CI:1.670–6.141,P=0.039)as independent risk factors for postpartum PTSD.Analgesia pump use(OR=0.500;95%CI:0.259–0.966,P=0.015)was found to be a protective factor against postpartum PTSD.CONCLUSION:Emergency cesarean section,admission to the emergency department after midnight,and cervical dilation were identified as independent risk factors for postpartum PTSD,while analgesic pump use was a protective factor.These findings provide insights for developing more effective preventive measures for women who give birth after emergency admission.

Effect of the extrahepatic bile duct anatomy on choledocholithiasis and its clinical significance

BACKGROUND A comprehensive understanding of the extrahepatic bile duct anatomy is vital to guide surgical procedures and perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiography.Anatomical irregularities within the extrahepatic bile duct may increase susceptibility to bile duct stones.AIM To investigate the anatomical risk factors associated with extrahepatic bile ducts in patients diagnosed with choledocholithiasis,with a specific focus on preventing stone recurrence after surgical intervention and endoscopic lithotomy.METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 124 patients without choledocholithiasis and 108 with confirmed choledocholithiasis who underwent magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography examinations at our center between January 2022 and October 2022.Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the anatomical risk factors influencing the incidence of common bile duct stones.RESULTS Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that several factors independently contributed to choledocholithiasis risk.Significant independent risk factors for choledocholithiasis were diameter of the common hepatic[adjusted odds ratio(aOR)=1.43,95%confidence interval(CI):1.07-1.92,adjusted P value=0.016]and common bile(aOR=1.68,95%CI:1.27-2.23,adjusted P valuelithiasis risk.Key risk factors include an enlarged diameter of the common hepatic and bile ducts,a shorter length of the common hepatic duct,and a reduced angle of the common bile duct.

Evaluating effectiveness and safety of combined percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage and laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute cholecystitis patients:Meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Acute cholecystitis(AC)is a common disease in general surgery.Laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC)is widely recognized as the"gold standard"surgical procedure for treating AC.For low-risk patients without complications,LC is the recommended treatment plan,but there is still controversy regarding the treatment strategy for moderate AC patients,which relies more on the surgeon's experience and the medical platform of the visiting unit.Percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder puncture drainage(PTGBD)can effectively alleviate gallbladder inflammation,reduce gallbladder wall edema and adhesion around the gallbladder,and create a"time window"for elective surgery.AIM To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of LC or PTGBD combined with LC for treating AC patients,providing a theoretical basis for choosing reasonable surgical methods for AC patients.METHODS In this study,we conducted a clinical investigation regarding the combined use of PTGBD tubes for the treatment of gastric cancer patients with AC.We performed searches in the following databases:PubMed,Web of Science,EMBASE,Cochrane library,China National Knowledge Infrastructure,and Wanfang Database.The search encompassed literature published from the inception of these databases to the present.Subsequently,relevant data were extracted,and a meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software.RESULTS A comprehensive analysis was conducted,encompassing 24 studies involving a total of 2564 patients.These patients were categorized into two groups:1371 in the LC group and 1193 in the PTGBD+LC group.The outcomes of the meta-analysis revealed noteworthy disparities between the PTGBD+LC group and the LC group in multiple dimensions:(1)Operative time:Mean difference(MD)=17.51,95%CI:9.53-25.49,Pli-cation rate:OR=1.88,95%CI:1.45-2

Retinal Vascular Imaging Application in Women’s Reproductive Health:Clinical Implications and Future Directions

Over the past two decades,population-based studies employing semiautomatic computer-assisted programs have uncovered associations between retinal microvascular features and various systemic conditions.As the recognition of retinal imaging in cardiometabolic health grows,there is increasing evidence supporting its application in women’s health,particularly during the reproductive age.This review aims to summarize the indications of retinal imaging in women’s health and intergenerational health,where suboptimal retinal imaging has been found to mirror pathological systemic changes,such as suboptimal hemodynamic circulation,inflammation,endothelial dysfunction,oxidative stress,and hypoxia in vivo.Findings from Singapore Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes and Singapore Preconception Study of Long-Term Maternal and Child Outcomes cohorts have reported serial changes in retinal conventional microvascular features(e.g.,retinal arteriolar narrowing,retinal venular widening)and retinal geometric microvascular features(e.g.,sparse fractal dimension,enlarged branching angle,and increased curvature tortuosity)during the preconception and antenatal phases.These morphological abnormalities were found to be related to female fertility,maternal antenatal health conditions,postnatal maternal cardiometabolic health,and intergenerational health in the fetus.Given the compelling evidence of the ability to detect microvascular changes through noninvasive methods at an early stage,retinal imaging holds the potential to facilitate timely interventions,mitigate the progression of complications,and prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.Looking ahead,the convergence of artificial intelligence and advanced imaging techniques heralds a promising era in women’s health research and clinical practice.
