Accelerated glacier mass loss in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau since the 1970s

The southeastern Tibetan Plateau(SETP)is a region in High Mountain Asia with the most serious glacier mass loss.However,long-term and large regional-scale studies that estimate glacier mass balance in this area remain limited.In this study,we generated a KH-9 Digital Elevation Model(DEM)(covering 87.6%of the glacier area)for the 1970s from KH-9 Hexagon imagery and quantified geodetic glacier mass over the SETP from the 1970s to 2020 using KH-9 DEM,NASADEM and ICESat-2 ATL06 data.The results show that the SETP was in a state of serious mass loss(at a rate of−0.35±0.03 m w.***.per year)from the 1970s to 2020,and the rate of mass loss accelerated from−0.15±0.05 to−0.56±0.10 m w.***.per year between the 1970s–2000 and 2000–2020.Within the SETP,the glacier mass balance revealed a remarkable spatial heterogeneity.The maximum mean glacier mass loss rate was observed in the Hengduan Shan.Nyainqentanglha exhibited the highest acceleration in the mass loss rate since the 1970s.The warming of air temperature and decreasing snowfall can partly explain the accelerated glacier mass loss in the SETP.The study provides a new long-term glacier mass balance estimation covering almost the entire SETP that suggests the acceleration in glacier mass loss observed in the SETP since the 1970s is a regional tendency,which is crucial for understanding the relationship between glaciers and climate changes.

Active Template Synthesis of Protein[n]Catenanes Using Engineered Peptide–Peptide Ligation Tools

The expansion of protein topological diversity requires new and efficient synthetic tools.Herein,we report the second and third generations of the SpyStapler-mediated SpyTag/BDTag ligation system for the efficient synthesis of 4-arm star proteins and the repurposing of the third generation as an active template to enable the synthesis of higher-order protein[n]catenanes(n=3,4,and 5).SpyStapler003 has a higher affinity to its cognate SpyTag and BDTag reactive pairs relative to the original SpyStapler.Hence,it can overcome much more profound steric hindrance in protein ligation and improve the efficiency of the resulting active template tool to facilitate the construction of radial protein[n]catenanes.Various proteins of interest,such as dihydrofolate reductase and the nanobody KN035,can be modularly incorporated into the[n]catenanes with intact activity.Combination of passive and active template strategies gives rise to linear protein[4]catenanes,which further expands the current topological diversity.Moreover,higher-order protein catenation not only leads to enhanced thermal stability and proteolytic resistance but also higher affinity of the nanobody via multivalent effects.Our study provides tools useful for bioconjugation and new topological protein scaffolds for the multivalent display of enzymes and antibodies.

Abnormalities of electroencephalography microstates in patients with depression and their association with cognitive function

BACKGROUND A growing number of recent studies have explored underlying activity in the brain by measuring electroencephalography(EEG)in people with depression.However,the consistency of findings on EEG microstates in patients with depression is poor,and few studies have reported the relationship between EEG microstates,cognitive scales,and depression severity scales.AIM To investigate the EEG microstate characteristics of patients with depression and their association with cognitive functions.METHODS A total of 24 patients diagnosed with depression and 32 healthy controls were included in this study using the Structured Clinical Interview for Disease for The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,Fifth Edition.We collected information relating to demographic and clinical characteristics,as well as data from the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status(RBANS;Chinese version)and EEG.RESULTS Compared with the controls,the duration,occurrence,and contribution of microstate C were significantly higher[depression(DEP):Duration 84.58±24.35,occurrence 3.72±0.56,contribution 30.39±8.59;CON:Duration 72.77±10.23,occurrence 3.41±0.36,contribution 24.46±4.66;Duration F=6.02,P=0.049;Occurrence F=6.19,P=0.049;Contribution F=10.82,P=0.011]while the duration,occurrence,and contribution of microstate D were significantly lower(DEP:Duration 70.00±15.92,occurrence 3.18±0.71,contribution 22.48±8.12;CON:Duration 85.46±10.23,occurrence 3.54±0.41,contribution 28.25±5.85;Duration F=19.18,P<0.001;Occurrence F=5.79,P=0.050;Contribution F=9.41,P=0.013)in patients with depression.A positive correlation was observed between the visuospatial/constructional scores of the RBANS scale and the transition probability of microstate class C to B(r=0.405,P=0.049).CONCLUSION EEG microstate,especially C and D,is a possible biomarker in depression.Patients with depression had a more frequent transition from microstate C to B,which may relate to more negative rumination and visual processing.

Feasibility of medical radioisotope production based on the proton beams at China Spallation Neutron Source

The utilization of a proton beam from the China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS)for producing medical radioisotopes is appealing owing to its high current intensity and high energy.The medical isotope production based on the proton beam at the CSNS is significant for the development of future radiopharmaceuticals,particularly for theα-emitting radiopharmaceu-ticals.The production yield and activity of typical medical isotopes were estimated using the FLUKA simulation.The results indicate that the 300-MeV proton beam with a power of 100 kW at CSNS-II is highly suitable for proof-of-principle studies of most medical radioisotopes.In particular,this proton beam offers tremendous advantages for the large-scale production of alpha radioisotopes,such as 225Ac,whose theoretical production yield can reach approximately 57 Ci/week.Based on these results,we provide perspectives on the use of CSNS proton beams to produce radioisotopes for medical applications.

Immunomodulatory Function of Pien Tze Huang in T Cell-Mediated Anti-tumor Activity against B16-F10,MC38 and Hep1-6 Tumor Models

Objective To investigate the anti-tumor effects of Pien Tze Huang(PZH)in mouse models of B16–F10 melanoma,MC38 colorectal cancer,Hep1-6 hepatocellular carcinoma and chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma model.Methods Various tumor models,including B16–F10,MC38 and Hep1-6 tumor hypodermic inoculation models,B16–F10 and Hep1-6 pulmonary metastasis models,Hep1-6 orthotopic implantation model,and chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma model,were utilized to evaluate the anti-tumor function of PZH.Tumor growth was assessed by measuring tumor size and weight of solid tumors isolated from C57BL/6 mice.For cell proliferation and death of tumor cells in vitro,as well as T cell activation markers,cytokine production and immune checkpoints analysis,single-cell suspensions were prepared from mouse spleen,lymph nodes,and tumors after PZH treatment.Results PZH demonstrated significant therapeutic efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth(P0.05).Nevertheless,PZH exhibited a remarkable ability to enhance T cell activation and the production of interferon gamma,tumor necrosis factor alpha,and interleukin 2 in CD4^(+)T cells in vitro(P<0.01 or P<0.05).Importantly,PZH substantially inhibited T cell exhaustion and boosted cytokine production by tumor-infiltrating CD8^(+)T cells(P<0.01 or P<0.05).Conclusion This study has confirmed a novel immunomodulatory function of PZH in T cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity,indicating that PZH holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for cancer treatment.

Group-based user pairing for virtual MIMO in LTE

A user pairing method is proposed to improve the throughput gain of virtual multiple input multiple output （virtual MIMO） in 3G long-term evolution（LTE）. The approach taken in this study separated the user pairing into four steps： 1） the users are divided into two groups according to their signal-to-noise ratio （SNR）, and different user pairing metrics are proposed for each group; 2） the scheduler chooses a user for transmitting by a given rule; 3） the scheduler searches the pairing candidate for the selected user in each group; 4） the scheduler chooses the final pairing user from the co-group and crossover-group candidates by using a marginal utility function, to balance fairness and efficiency. The method can improve the throughput of users with high SNR, and guarantee fairness for users with low SNR, so it can be used in 3G LTE systems. The article provides both theoretical analysis and simulation results to support the idea.

Calcium Overload Is A Critical Step in Programmed Necrosis of ARPE-19 Cells Induced by High-Concentration H_2O_2

Objective Oxidative stress plays an important role in retinal pigmental epithelium （RPE） death during aging and the development of age-related macular degeneration.Although early reports indicate that reactive oxygen species （ROS） including H2O2 can trigger apoptosis at lower concentrations and necrosis at higher concentrations,the exact molecular mechanism of RPE death is still unclear.The purpose of this study was to investigate the molecular pathways involved in RPE death induced by exogenous ROS,especially at higher concentrations.Methods Cultured ARPE-19 cells were treated with H2O2 at different concentrations and cell viability was measured with the MTT assay.Cell death was morphologically studied by microscopy using APOPercentage assay and PI staining.Furthermore,the impact of oxidative stress on ARPE-19 cells was assessed by HO-1 and PARP-1 Western blotting and by the protection of antioxidant EGCG.Calcium influx was determined using the fura-2 calcium indicator and the role of intracellular calcium overload in ARPE-19 cell death was evaluated following cobalt treatment to block calcium effects.Results H2O2 reduced the viability of ARPE-19 cells in a concentration-dependent manner,which was presented as a typical s-shaped curve.Cell death caused by high concentrations of H2O2 was confirmed to be programmed necrosis.Morphologically,dying ARPE-19 cells were extremely swollen and lost the integrity of their plasma membrane,positively detected with APOPercentage assay and PI staining.24-hour treatment with 500 ？mol/L H2O2 induced remarkable up-regulation of HO-1 and PARP-1 in ARPE-19 cells.Moreover,antioxidant treatment using EGCG effectively protected cells from H2O2-induced injury,increasing cell viability from 14.17%±2.31% to 85.77%±4.58%.After H2O2 treatment,intracellular calcium levels were highly elevated with a maximum concentration of 1200nM.Significantly,the calcium channel inhibitor cobalt was able to blunt this calcium influx and blocked the necrotic pathway,rescuing the ARPE-19 cell from H2O2-indu

A Robust Framework for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis with Noisy Labels Generated from Distributed Data Annotation

Multimodal sentiment analysis utilizes multimodal data such as text,facial expressions and voice to detect people’s attitudes.With the advent of distributed data collection and annotation,we can easily obtain and share such multimodal data.However,due to professional discrepancies among annotators and lax quality control,noisy labels might be introduced.Recent research suggests that deep neural networks(DNNs)will overfit noisy labels,leading to the poor performance of the DNNs.To address this challenging problem,we present a Multimodal Robust Meta Learning framework(MRML)for multimodal sentiment analysis to resist noisy labels and correlate distinct modalities simultaneously.Specifically,we propose a two-layer fusion net to deeply fuse different modalities and improve the quality of the multimodal data features for label correction and network training.Besides,a multiple meta-learner(label corrector)strategy is proposed to enhance the label correction approach and prevent models from overfitting to noisy labels.We conducted experiments on three popular multimodal datasets to verify the superiority of ourmethod by comparing it with four baselines.

High-entropy oxide-supported platinum nanoparticles for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

High-entropy oxides（HEOs） are a new class of single-phase structures with unique electronic and catalytic properties;therefore,it is worthwhile to explore their applications in electrocatalysis.In this study,a Pt/（FeCoNiCrAl）3O4nanohybrid using HEO as a support was developed as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction（HER）.Pt/（FeCoNiCrAl）3O4exhibited high HER activity with a low overpotential of 22 mV at10 mA·cm-2,outperforming other binary,ternary,and quaternary supports.The HER activity of Pt/（FeCoNiCrAl）3O4was higher than that of a commercial Pt/C with a significantly lower Pt loading.The catalyst exhibited good activity and long-term stability（60 h） in an electrolytic water-splitting device.This good activity can be attributed to the fact that the introduction of Pt effectively facilitates electronic interactions between Pt and the HEO.In addition,the HEO substrate was more favorable for dispersing Pt particles,optimizing the electrochemical specific surface area,and significantly reducing the charge resistance of the HER.This study extends the application of HEOs in electrocatalysis and demonstrates the promising prospects of HEOs as supports for electrocatalysts.

Uncovering the electrooxidation behavior of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on Ni/Co electrodes

Biomass,derived from plant photosynthesis that captures carbon dioxide to form carbohydrates,offers vast renewable reserves.The electrooxidation of biomass,coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction,enables the simultaneous production of biomass-based plastic monomers and green hydrogen,attracting significant scholarly interest.However,ambiguity remains regarding the adsorption mechanism at the catalyst surface(Langmuir-Hinshelwood or Eley-Rideal)and the adsorbed substrate groups.To address this,we prepared a Ni/Co electrode for the electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(HMF)into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid(FDCA)through a corrosion reaction and electro-reduction pathway.HMF conversion reached 100.00%,FDCA yield reached 96.82%,and Faradic efficiency(FE)reached 92.14%.Meaningfully,utilizing in-situ spectroscopy and electrochemical methods,this work provided valuable insights into active sites and catalyst surface adsorption.
