Krill oil attenuates obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy in mice

Obesity is associated with skeletal muscle mass loss and physical dysfunction. Krill oil (KO) has been shown to be beneficial in human health. However， the effect of KO on obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy is still unclear. In this study， the male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks to induce obesity， and then were intragastric administration with 400 mg/kg bw KO for an additional 6 weeks. The results showed that KO treatment reduced body weight， fat accumulation and serum pro-inflammatory cytokines in HFD-induced obese mice. Importantly， KO treatment attenuated skeletal muscle atrophy in HFD-fed mice， as evidenced by preserving skeletal muscle mass， average myofiber cross-sectional area and grip strength. KO administration also mitigated obesity-induced ectopic lipid deposition and inflammatory response in skeletal muscle. Additionally， KO treatment inhibited the transcriptional activities of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) p65 and forkhead box O 3a (FoxO3a)， and then down-regulated muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx) and muscle-specific RING finger protein 1 (MuRF1) protein levels in skeletal muscle from HFD-fed mice. KO administration also improved obesity-induced impaired muscle protein synthesis via activating PI3K/Akt pathway. Furthermore， KO treatment enhanced muscle mitochondrial biogenesis in HFD-induced obese mice via activating PGC-1α pathway. Collectively， KO might be developed as a potential nutritional supplement for the prevention and treatment of obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy.

BACKGROUND Ischemic stroke(IS)is a widely recognized disease characterized by high preva-lence,mortality,morbidity,disability,and recurrence *** ranks prominently in terms of mortality,constituting 60%-80%of stroke *** To explore the impact of comprehensive nursing care on the quality of life and swallowing function in individuals diagnosed with *** This study comprised 172 patients with IS admitted to our hospital between February 2018 to March *** participants were divided into two groups,namely the control group(n=80)receiving routine care and the research group(n=92)receiving comprehensive *** assessment scales,including the standard swallowing function assessment scale(SSA),National Institutes of Health Stroke scale(NIHSS),European stroke scale(ESS),self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS),Barthel index(BI),and the motor func-tion assessment scale(MAS),were employed to evaluate the improvement in swallowing function,neurological deficits,clinical outcomes,anxiety,depression,daily living activities,and motor function before and after ***,the study compared the occurrence of adverse reactions during the nursing period,life quality before and after the intervention,rehabilitation compliance,and nursing satisfaction between the two *** After the nursing intervention,the research group exhibited significantly improved SSA and NIHSS scores compared to the control group(Pductions in SAS and SDS scores(P<0.05),with the research group showing more obvious advantages(P<0.05).Compared to the control group,the research group displayed significantly better ESS,BI,and MAS scores(P<0.05),coupled with a lower incidence of adverse reactions(P<0.05).Additionally,the research group demonstrated markedly higher levels of life quality,rehabilitation compliance,and nursing satisfaction compared to the control group(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Comprehensive nu

Rotavirus is one of the pathogenic causes that induce diarrhea in young animals, especially piglets, worldwide. However, nowadays, there is no specific drug available to treat the disease, and the related vaccines have no obvious efficiency in some countries. Via analyzing the pathogenesis of rotavirus, it inducing diarrhea is mainly due to disturb enteric nervous system, destroy gut mucosal integrity, induce intracellular electrolyte imbalance, and impair gut microbiota and immunity. Many studies have already proved that prebiotics and probiotics can mitigate the damage and diarrhea induced by rotavirus infection in hosts. Based on these, the current review summarizes and discusses the effects and mechanisms of prebiotics and probiotics on rotavirus-induced diarrhea in piglets. This information will highlight the basis for the swine production utilization of prebiotics and probiotics in the prevention or treatment of rotavirus infection in the future.

The prevalence of hyperlipidemia has increased significantly due to genetic, dietary, nutritional and pharmacological factors, and has become one of the most common pathological conditions in humans. Hyperlipidemia can lead to a range of diseases such as atherosclerosis, stroke, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, diabetes, and kidney failure, etc. High circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is one of the causes of hyperlipidemia. LDL-C in the blood binds to LDL receptor (LDLR) and regulates cholesterol homeostasis through endocytosis. In contrast, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) mediates LDLR degradation via the intracellular and extracellular pathways, leading to hyperlipidemia. Targeting PCSK9-synthesizing transcription factors and downstream molecules are important for development of new lipid-lowering drugs. Clinical trials regarding PCSK9 inhibitors have demonstrated a reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events. The purpose of this review was to explore the target and mechanism of intracellular and extracellular pathways in degradation of LDLR and related drugs by PCSK9 in order to open up a new pathway for the development of new lipid-lowering drugs.
