Runout prediction of potential landslides based on the multi-source data collaboration analysis on historical cases

Long runout landslides involve a massive amount of energy and can be extremely hazardous owing to their long movement distance,high mobility and strong destructive power.Numerical methods have been widely used to predict the landslide runout but a fundamental problem remained is how to determine the reliable numerical parameters.This study proposes a framework to predict the runout of potential landslides through multi-source data collaboration and numerical analysis of historical landslide events.Specifically,for the historical landslide cases,the landslide-induced seismic signal,geophysical surveys,and possible in-situ drone/phone videos(multi-source data collaboration)can validate the numerical results in terms of landslide dynamics and deposit features and help calibrate the numerical(rheological)parameters.Subsequently,the calibrated numerical parameters can be used to numerically predict the runout of potential landslides in the region with a similar geological setting to the recorded events.Application of the runout prediction approach to the 2020 Jiashanying landslide in Guizhou,China gives reasonable results in comparison to the field observations.The numerical parameters are determined from the multi-source data collaboration analysis of a historical case in the region(2019 Shuicheng landslide).The proposed framework for landslide runout prediction can be of great utility for landslide risk assessment and disaster reduction in mountainous regions worldwide.

Atrial fibrillation(AF)is the most prevalent sustained cardiac arrhythmia among humans,with its incidence increasing significantly with age.Despite the high frequency of AF in clinical practice,its etiology and management remain elusive.To develop effective treatment strategies,it is imperative to comprehend the underlying mechanisms of AF;therefore,the establishment of animal models of AF is vital to explore its pathogenesis.While spontaneous AF is rare in most animal species,several large animal models,particularly those of pigs,dogs,and horses,have proven as invaluable in recent years in advancing our knowledge of AF pathogenesis and developing novel therapeutic options.This review aims to provide a comprehensive discussion of various animal models of AF,with an emphasis on the unique features of each model and its utility in AF research and treatment.The data summarized in this review provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of AF and can be used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of novel therapeutic interventions.

Motion simulation of moorings using optimized LSTM neural network

Mooring arrays have been widely deployed in sustained ocean observation in high resolution to measure finer dynamic features of marine phenomena.However,the irregular posture changes and nonlinear response of moorings under the effect of ocean currents face huge challenges for the deployment of mooring arrays,which may cause the deviations of measurements and yield a vacuum of observation in the upper ocean.We developed a data-driven mooring simulation model based on LSTM(long short-term memory)neural network,coupling the ocean current with position data from moorings to predict the motion of moorings,including single-step output prediction and multi-step prediction.Based on the predictive information,the formation of the mooring array can be adjusted to improve the accuracy and integrity of measurements.Moreover,we proposed the cuckoo search(CS)optimization algorithm to tune the parameters of LSTM,which improves the robustness and generalization of the model.We utilize the datasets observed from moorings anchored in the Kuroshio Extension region to train and validate the simulation model.The experimental results demonstrate that the model can remarkably improve prediction accuracy and yield stable performance.Moreover,compared with other optimization algorithms,CS is more efficient and performs better in simulating the motion of moorings.

Osteoarthritis(OA)is a highly prevalent whole-joint disease that causes disability and pain and affects a patient’s quality of life.However,currently,there is a lack of effective early diagnosis and treatment.Although stem cells can promote cartilage repair and treat OA,problems such as immune rejection and tumorigenicity persist.Extracellular vesicles(EVs)can transmit genetic information from donor cells and mediate intercellular communication,which is considered a functional paracrine factor of stem cells.Increasing evidences suggest that EVs may play an essential and complex role in the pathogenesis,diagnosis,and treatment of OA.Here,we introduced the role of EVs in OA progression by influencing inflammation,metabolism,and aging.Next,we discussed EVs from the blood,synovial fluid,and joint-related cells for diagnosis.Moreover,we outlined the potential of modified and unmodified EVs and their combination with biomaterials for OA therapy.Finally,we discuss the deficiencies and put forward the prospects and challenges related to the application of EVs in the field of OA.

Numerical and experimental study of bleed impact in multistage axial compressors

In this study,the influence of inter-stage bleeding on the compressor performance and inter-stage flow field of a multistage axial compressor is investigated by both experimental and numerical methods.The experiment is conducted on a four-stage low-speed axial compressor,and a specific computational model is built to simulate the experiment environment accurately.To illuminate the fluid mechanisms of bleeding effect in detail,both the experiment and the simulation are carried out twice,i.e.,in the first time,the mass flow rate upstream the bleed location is constant under different bleed rate conditions;while in the second time,the mass flow rate downstream the bleed location is constant under different bleed rate conditions.The results demonstrate that inter-stage bleeding has little influence on upstream compressor characteristics,and affects the upstream flow field only in the rear half of the stator.The bleed effect on the downstream flow field is embodied in the variation of an incoming flow profile,an increase as the compressor inlet flow coefficient decreases.Therefore,such an effect is only significant on compressor characteristics at small flow coefficient conditions.In multistage compressors,the variation of compressor characteristics and flow field caused by inter-stage bleeding is the comprehensive result of the bleeding and the variation of the upstream working condition.In addition,the comparison between numerical and experimental results shows that the flow moves towards top half of span through the downstream rotor passage in the numerical simulation,whereas the trend of flow field variation with different bleed rates at the outlet of the downstream rotor and stator is the same with that at the inlet of the downstream rotor in the experiment,which means that the numerical method has overestimated the radial mixing intensity of the flow.

Determinants of infant behavior and growth in breastfed late preterm and early term infants:a secondary data analysis

Background Late preterm and early term infants are at increased risk of poor growth,behavioral problems,and developmental delays.This study aimed to investigate the impact of maternal and infant characteristics,feeding practices,and breastmilk composition on infant behavior following late preterm and early term delivery,and to evaluate the association between infant behavior and growth.Methods Data from 52 Chinese mothers and their late preterm/early term infants participating in the Breastfeed a Better Youngster study were used.Maternal and infant characteristics were collected using questionnaires at 1 week postpartum.Breastmilk macronutrient content was measured using a human milk analyzer,and infant behavior was assessed using a 3-day infant behavior diary at 8 weeks postpartum.Feeding practices were collected at both time points using questionnaires.Multivariate models were used to assess associations between potential predictors and infant behavior and between infant behavior and growth.Results Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with greater sleep duration(P=0.02)and shorter crying duration(P=0.01).Mothers with a vocational education reported greater distress duration(P=0.006).Greater colic duration was associated with higher maternal annual income(P=0.004).There was no significant association between infant behavior and growth(all P>0.05).Conclusions Exclusive breastfeeding might promote more favorable infant behaviors in late preterm/early term infants,while the development of infant distress behaviors was associated with some maternal characteristics(maternal education and annual income).However,due to the limitations of diary methods,determinants of infant behavior should ideally be assessed using more objective measures in larger samples.

Two-tier control structure design methodology applied to heat exchanger networks

Because of its paramount importance in the successful industrial control strategy of a given heat exchanger network(HEN),the control structure designs for providing appropriate manipulated variable(MV)and controlled variable pairings have received considerable attention.However,quite frequently HENs with such control structures face the problem of hard constraints,typically holding the HENs at less controlled operating space.So both the MV pairings and the above control pairings should be considered to design a control structure.This paper investigates the systematic incorporation of the two pairings,and presents a methodology for designing such two-tier control structure.This is developed based on the sequential strategy,coupling an indirect-tier with direct-tier control structure design,wherein the intention is realized in the former stage and the latter is implemented for further optimization.The MV identification and pairing are achieved through variations in heat load of heat exchangers to design the indirect-tier control structure.Then the direct-tier control structure is followed the relative gain array pairing rules.With the proposed methodology,on the one hand,it generates an explicit connection between the MV pairings and the HEN configuration,and the quantitative interaction measure is improved to avoid the multiple solutions to break the relationship among all the control pairings into individuals;on the other hand,a two-tier control structure reveals control potentials and control system design requirements,this may avoid complex and economically unfavourable control and HEN structures.The application of proposed framework is illustrated with two cases involving the dynamic simulation analysis,the quantitative assessment and the random test.

Classifying Chinese Medicine Constitution Using Multimodal Deep-Learning Model

Objective:To develop a multimodal deep-learning model for classifying Chinese medicine constitution,i.e.,the balanced and unbalanced constitutions,based on inspection of tongue and face images,pulse waves from palpation,and health information from a total of 540 subjects.Methods:This study data consisted of tongue and face images,pulse waves obtained by palpation,and health information,including personal information,life habits,medical history,and current symptoms,from 540 subjects(202 males and 338 females).Convolutional neural networks,recurrent neural networks,and fully connected neural networks were used to extract deep features from the data.Feature fusion and decision fusion models were constructed for the multimodal data.Results:The optimal models for tongue and face images,pulse waves and health information were ResNet18,Gate Recurrent Unit,and entity embedding,respectively.Feature fusion was superior to decision fusion.The multimodal analysis revealed that multimodal data compensated for the loss of information from a single mode,resulting in improved classification performance.Conclusions:Multimodal data fusion can supplement single model information and improve classification performance.Our research underscores the effectiveness of multimodal deep learning technology to identify body constitution for modernizing and improving the intelligent application of Chinese medicine.

The skin is an important organ of the human body that resists external threats but lacks sufficient self-regeneration ability when severe damage occurs.However,most of the available skin substitutes cannot achieve ideal restoration of complex structures and multiple functions of native skin tissues.Fortunately,the advent of decellularized extracellular matrix(dECM)offers a promising approach to overcome these obstacles.The dECM,derived from the natural extracellular matrix(ECM),possesses a similar structure and composition,which constructs an environment favorable for cell performance in regeneration.Moreover,dECM retains good bioactivity,low immunogenicity,and high availability,making it a suitable biomaterial for skin repair and regeneration.In this review,various decellularization methods and subsequent evaluations of dECM are introduced first,and the main sources of dECM are then presented.Furthermore,the recent progress of dECM-based biomaterials applied in skin regeneration and future perspectives are summarized.

Nanomedicine sheds new light on cancer immunotherapy

Cancer immunotherapy comprising of immune checkpoint blockade(ICB)therapy,immune cell therapies,cancer vaccines and many others represents a profound arsenal in the fight against different types of cancers.However,their overall clinical objective response rates,particularly against most solid tumors,are still not sufficient owing to a variety of reasons including the heterogenous expression of tumor antigens,limited tumor infiltration of effector immune cells,acquired tumor immunosuppression and some other factors.In recent years,various nanomedicine strategies have been proposed to assist cancer immunotherapy via distinct mechanisms,presenting new promises in many published studies.This perspective will thus provide a brief overview regarding the development of nanomedicine platforms for improving cancer immunotherapy.
