Prediction of Th17/Treg cell balance on length of stay in intensive care units of patients with sepsis

Background Prolonged length of stay(LOS)of sepsis can drain a hospital's material and human resources.This study investigated the correlations between T helper type 17(Th17)and regulatory T(Treg)balance with LOS in sepsis.Methods A prospective clinical observational study was designed in Changhai Hospital affiliated to Naval Medical University in Shanghai,China,from January to October 2020.The patients diagnosed with sepsis and who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited and whether the levels of cytokines,procalcitonin,subtypes,and biomarkers of T cells in the peripheral blood were detected.We analyzed the correlation between these and LOS.Results Sixty septic patients were classified into two groups according to whether their intensive care unit(ICU)stay exceeded 14 days.The patients with LOS≥14 days were older([72.6±7.5]years vs.[63.3±10.4]years,P=0.015)and had higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)(median[interquartile range]:6.5[5.0–11.0]vs.4.0[3.0–6.0],P=0.001)and higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation(APACHE)II scores(16.0[13.0–21.0]vs.8.5[7.0–14.0],P=0.001).There was no difference in other demographic characteristics and cytokines,interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor-α,and interleukin-10 between the two groups.The Th17/Treg ratio of sepsis with LOS<14 days was considerably lower(0.48[0.38–0.56]vs.0.69[0.51–0.98],P=0.001).For patients with LOS≥14 days,the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the Th17/Treg ratio was 0.766.It improved to 0.840 and 0.850 when combined with the SOFA and APACHE II scores,respectively.Conclusions The Th17/Treg ratio was proportional to septic severity and can be used as a potential predictor of ICU stay in sepsis,presenting a new option for ICU practitioners to better care for patients with sepsis.

Flotation separation of scheelite from calcite using luteolin as a novel depressant

This paper proposes luteolin(LUT)as a novel depressant for the flotation-based separation of scheelite and calcite in a sodium oleate(NaOL)system.The suitability of LUT as a calcite depressant is confirmed through micro-flotation testing.At pH=9,with LUT concentration of 50 mg·L^(-1) and NaOL concentration of 50 mg·L^(-1),scheelite recovery reaches 80.3%.Calcite,on the other hand,exhibits a recovery rate of 17.6%,indicating a significant difference in floatability between the two minerals.Subsequently,the surface modifica-tions of scheelite and calcite following LUT treatment are characterized using adsorption capacity testing,Zeta potential analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and atomic force microscopy(AFM).The study in-vestigates the selective depressant mechanism of LUT on calcite.Adsorption capacity testing and Zeta potential analysis demonstrate sub-stantial absorption of LUT on the surface of calcite,impeding the further adsorption of sodium oleate,while its impact on scheelite is min-imal.FT-IR and XPS analyses reveal the selective adsorption of LUT onto the surface of calcite,forming strong chemisorption bonds between the hydroxyl group and calcium ions present.AFM directly illustrates the distinct adsorption densities of LUT on the two miner-al types.Consequently,LUT can effectively serve as a depressant for calcite,enabling the successful separation of scheelite and calcite.

The Impact of General Correlation Under Multi-Period Mean-Variance Asset-Liability Portfolio Management

This paper studies the multi-period mean-variance(MV)asset-liability portfolio management problem(MVAL),in which the portfolio is constructed by risky assets and liability.It is worth mentioning that the impact of general correlation is considered,i.e.,the random returns of risky assets and the liability are not only statistically correlated to each other but also correlated to themselves in different time periods.Such a model with a general correlation structure extends the classical multiperiod MVAL models with assumption of independent returns.The authors derive the explicit portfolio policy and the MV efficient frontier for this problem.Moreover,a numerical example is presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed solution scheme.

Wheat genotypes tolerant to heat at seedling stage tend to be also tolerant at adult stage:The possibility of early selection for heat tolerance breeding

Wheat production is seriously influenced by extreme hot weather,which has attracted increasing attention.It is important to compare wheat responses to heat at seedling and reproductive stages,to explore the potential relationship between the performances at different growing stages and the possibility of early selection to accelerate heat tolerance breeding.In this study,forty wheat genotypes were screened under heat stress at both seedling and adult stages.It was found that root lengths at seedling stage were severely reduced by heat stress with significant variations among wheat genotypes.Heat-tolerant genotypes at seedling stage showed less root length decrease than susceptible ones.Wheat genotypes tolerant at seedling stage showed higher yield at adult stage after heat treatment.The performances of wheat genotypes screened under heat stress at seedling and adult stages were ranked by seedling damage index and adult damage index.A significant positive relationship was found between heat tolerance at seedling stage and at adult stage(r=0.6930),suggesting a similar tolerant/susceptible mechanism at different plant growth stages and the possibility of early selection at seedling stage for breeding heat tolerance.Extremely tolerant and susceptible genotypes with consistent performances at seedling and adult stages were genetically compared and associated SNP markers and linked candidate genes were identified.

Cerium-modified amorphous manganese oxides for efficient catalytic removal of ozone

Manganese-based catalysts were widely developed for catalytic removal of ozone,and the low stability and water inactivation are major challenges.To improve removal performance of ozone,three methods were applied to modify amorphous manganese oxides,including acidification,calcination and Ce modification.The physiochemical properties of prepared samples were characterized,and the catalytic activity for ozone removal was evaluated.All modification methods can promote the removal of ozone by amorphous manganese oxides,and Ce modification showed the most significant enhancement.It was confirmed that the introduction of Ce markedly changed the amount and property of oxygen vacancies in amorphous manganese oxides.Superior catalytic activity of Ce-MnO_(x) can be ascribed to its more content and enhanced formation ability of oxygen vacancies,larger specific surface area and higher oxygen mobility.Furthermore,the durability tests under high relative humidity(80%)determined that Ce-MnO_(x) showed excellent stability and water resistance.These demonstrate the promising potential of amorphously Ce-modified manganese oxides for catalytic removal of ozone.

Correlation-aware probabilistic data summarization for large-scale multi-block scientific data visualization

In this paper,we propose a correlationaware probabilistic data summarization technique to efficiently analyze and visualize large-scale multi-block volume data generated by massively parallel scientific simulations.The core of our technique is correlation modeling of distribution representations of adjacent data blocks using copula functions and accurate data value estimation by combining numerical information,spatial location,and correlation distribution using Bayes’rule.This effectively preserves statistical properties without merging data blocks in different parallel computing nodes and repartitioning them,thus significantly reducing the computational cost.Furthermore,this enables reconstruction of the original data more accurately than existing methods.We demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique using six datasets,with the largest having one billion grid points.The experimental results show that our approach reduces the data storage cost by approximately one order of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art methods while providing a higher reconstruction accuracy at a lower computational cost.

Collisions Between Lumps/Rogue Waves and Solitons for A(3+1)-Dimensional Generalized Variable-Coefficient Shallow Water Wave Equation

In this paper,we investigate a(3+1)-dimensional generalized variable-coefficient shallow water wave equation,which can be used to describe the flow below a pressure surface in oceanography and atmospheric science.Employing the Kadomtsev−Petviashvili hierarchy reduction,we obtain the semi-rational solutions which describe the lumps and rogue waves interacting with the kink solitons.We find that the lump appears from one kink soliton and fuses into the other on the x−y and x−t planes.However,on the x−z plane,the localized waves in the middle of the parallel kink solitons are in two forms:lumps and line rogue waves.The effects of the variable coefficients on the two forms are discussed.The dispersion coefficient influences the speed of solitons,while the background coefficient influences the background’s height.
