Hospitalizations for Osteoporosis-Related Fractures: Analysis from.Eastern Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis causes fragility fractures which increase the m.rbidity and m.rtality in the elderly. Our objective was to look at the hospital adm.ssions due to fragility fractures and site of fractures. m.thods: This is a retrospective study of a 2-year period (2017-2018), in which we evaluated all the adm.ssions of fragility fractures at King Fahd Hospital of the University, al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. A Fragility Fracture is a fracture which occurs in patients with low bone m.ss due to a fall from.a standing height. The data were gathered from.the Quadru m.d patient care system.for patients over the age of 50 years: sex, site of fracture, previous fractures, and treatm.nt m.ted out. The hospitalization rate for fragility fractures was calculated by taking into consideration of all the adult adm.ssions to the orthopaedic departm.nt. Ethical approval was obtained from.the Institutional Review Board of the Hospital and the Im.m.Abdul Rahm.n Bin Faisal University, Dam.am. Results: During the study period 187 patients with fragility fractures were adm.tted. The m.an age was 68.55 ± 12.43 years;fracture fem.r was the m.st com.on with 136 (72.7%), tibia 15 (8%) and spine 14 (7.5%). At the tim. of discharge based on the T score of spine 50 were osteopenic and 45 were osteoporotic. Overall adult adm.ssion for the study period was 1410 patients and 13.26% were patients with fragility fractures. There were 3 (1.6%) deaths within the first 30 days in the hospital. Conclusions: Fracture fem.r was the m.st com.on fragility fracture seen in our study. Orthopaedic surgeons should be ready to treat all fragility fractures and treat osteoporosis appropriately so that a second fracture is prevented.

Rudists(Bivalvia) from.a Cretaceous Platform.in Northern Egypt: Taxonom. and Paleobiogeography

New well-preserved rudist m.terials com. from.the Barrem.an–Turonian m.rine form.tions in the Yelleg, m.nsherah, m.aza, and Raghawi sections in North Sinai, northern Egypt. There, 17 discovered rudist species belonging to 13 genera and seven taxonom.c fam.lies are described in detail as follows: Eoradiolites plicatus(Conrad), Eoradiolites liratus(Conrad), Praeradiolites ponsianus(d'Archiac), Archaeoradiolites sp., Bournonia africana Douvillé, Bournonia fourtaui Douville, Biradiolites lom.ricalis(d'Orbigny), Biradiolites zum.ffeni Douville, Radiolites lewyi lewyi Parnes, Radiolites sauvagesi(d'Hom.res-Firm.s), Durania arnaudi(Choffat), Toucasia carinata(m.theron), Toucasia sp., Neocaprina raghawiensis Steuber and Bachm.nn, Sellaea sp., Ichthyosarcolites sp. and Horoiopleura sp.. The Cenom.nian deposits in the northern Eastern desert of Egypt only contain E. liratus. The dom.nation of the Cenom.nian rudist species in North Sinai, however, is attributed to changes in the platform. which passes m.inly from.carbonate in the north to siliciclastics in the south. The presence of Horiopleura sp. in the late Barrem.an-early Aptian deposits is docum.nted for the first tim., which suggests the expansion of taxa of the genus Horiopleura Douville to North Sinai during this interval. The age of the rudist species is docum.nted from.the late Barrem.an-Turonian form.tions, with their geographic distribution in the m.diterranean region considered..

Protective Effect of Curcum.n on Anxiety, Learning Behavior, Neurom.scular Activities, Brain Neurotransm.tters and Oxidative Stress Enzym.s in Cadm.um.Intoxicated m.ce

Cadm.um.(Cd) exposure can induce acute lethal health-related threats to hum.ns since it has an exceptional ability to accum.late in living organism. and cause toxicological effects. Curcum.n (Cur) on the other hand has a wide variety of biological activities and several anim.l studies have suggested for a potential therapeutic or preventive effects against several ailm.nts and infections. To study the effect of Cur on the toxicity of Cd, sixty Swiss-Webster strain m.le m.ce were divided into 6 groups of ten each at random. Group-1 served as the na?ve control and received no treatm.nt. Group-2, 3 and 4 were the experim.ntal controls and were adm.nistered once a day with a single oral dose of 50% dim.thyl sulphoxide (Dm.O), Cur (300 m./kg) or Cd (100 m./kg) respectively, for 2 weeks. Group-5 and 6 received Cur and Cd in com.ination once a day orally for 2 weeks except that Cur in a dose of 150 and 300 m./kg to group 5 and 6 respectively, was adm.nistered one hour before Cd (100 m./kg) adm.nistration to both groups. After treatm.nt period, the anim.ls were subjected to behavioral tests and thereafter, the anim.ls were sacrificed for the estim.tion of neurotransm.tters like serotonin (5-HT), dopam.ne (DA) and it’s m.tabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) as well as oxidative stress enzym.s like lipid peroxides in the form.of thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances (TBARS) and total glutathione (GSH) in the forebrain tissue. Cd reduced significantly the body weight gain, the locom.tor activity, anxiety behavior in the plus m.ze and the learning capability (cognitive effect) in the shuttle-box test. Biochem.cal analysis further revealed that Cd exposure significantly altered the brain neurotransm.tters and the oxidative stress enzym.s. However, adm.nistration of Cur along with Cd had an am.liorating effect on all the behavioral and biochem.cal param.ters studied herein and reduced the toxicity of Cd significantly and dose-dependently. Thus, Cur m.y be beneficial

In the context of the circular econom.,the huge am.unts of biom.ss waste should be converted into value-added m.terials and energy to dim.nish pollution,atm.spheric CO_(2)levels and costly waste *** im.ging usually uses expensive and toxic chem.cals e.g.,organic dyes,sem.conductor quantum.dots,calling for safer,greener,cheaper fluorescent probes for biological im.ging in vitro and in *** these regards,carbon quantum.dots(CQDs)-based fluorescent probes using biom.ss waste as a precursor m.y have m.ch higher *** we transform.d the biom.ss waste of peach leaves into value-added fluorescent CQDs through a low-cost and green one-step hydrotherm.l *** obtained CQDs show excitation-dependent photolum.nescence properties with a fluorescence lifetim. of 5.96 ns and a quantum.yield of 7.71%without any *** addition,the CQDs have a fine size of 1.9 nm.with good hydrophilicity and high fluorescent stability over pH 4.0-11.0 *** im.ging of in vitro cell cultures and in vivo with zebrafish show that CQDs possess ultra-low toxicity and rem.rkable perform.nce for biological *** when CQDs present at a concentration as high as500μg/m.L,the organism.can still m.intain m.re than 90%activity both in vitro and in vivo,and present bright *** cheaper,greener,ultra-low toxicity CQDs developed in this work is a potential candidate for biological im.ging in vitro and in vivo.

Diagnosing a baby’s feelings poses a challenge for both doctors and parents because babies cannot explain their feelings through expression or *** the em.tions of babies and their associated expressions during different sensations such as hunger,pain,etc.,is a com.licated *** infancy,all com.unication and feelings are propagated through cryspeech,which is a natural *** clinical m.thods can be used to diagnose a baby’s diseases,but nonclinical m.thods of diagnosing a baby’s feelings are *** such,in this study,we aim.d to identify babies’feelings and em.tions through their cry using a nonclinical *** in the cry sound can be identified using our m.thod and used to assess the baby’s *** considered the frequency of the cries from.the energy of the *** feelings represented by the infant’s cry are judged to represent certain sensations expressed by the child using the optim.l frequency of the recognition of a real-world audio *** used m.chine learning and artificial intelligence to distinguish cry tones in real tim. through feature *** experim.ntal group consisted of 50%each m.le and fem.le babies,and we determ.ned the relevancy of the results against different *** application produced real-tim. results after recognizing a child’s cry *** novelty of our work is that we,for the first tim.,successfully derived the feelings of young children through the cry-speech of the child,showing prom.se for end-user applications.
