Lithium–sulfur batteries(LSBs)are regarded as promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices owing to their high-theoretical capacity(1675 mAh g^(−1))and affordable ***,several limitations of LSBs such as the lithium polysulfide shuttle,large volume expansion,and low electrical conductivity of sulfur need to be resolved for practical *** address these limitations,herein,a multidimensional architectured hybrid(Co@CNT/nG),where Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles are encapsulated into threedimensional(3D)porous N-doped reduced graphene oxide interconnected with carbon nanotube(CNT)branches,is synthesized through a simple pyrolysis *** synergistic effect achieved through the homogeneously distributed and encapsulated Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,the interconnected CNT branches,and the 3D hierarchical porous structure and N-doping of Co@CNT/nG significantly suppresses the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and enhances the conversion redox kinetics for the improved sulfur *** validate this effect through various measurements including symmetric cells,Li_(2)S nucleation,shuttle currents,Tafel slopes,diffusion coefficients,and post-mortem ***,Co@CNT/nG-70S-based LSB cells achieve a high-specific capacity of 1193.1 mAh g^(−1) at 0.1 C and a low capacity decay rate of 0.030%per cycle for 700 cycles at 5 C,delivering a high areal capacity of 5.62 mAh cm^(−2) even with a loading of 6.5 mg cm^(−2).

Companion diagnostics for the targeted therapy of gastric cancer

Gastric cancer is the fourth most common type ofcancer and represents a major cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. With recent biomedical advances in our understanding of the molecular characteristics of gastric cancer, many genetic alterations have been identified as potential targets for its treatment. Multiple novel agents are currently under development as the demand for active agents that improve the survival of gastric cancer patients constantly increases. Based on lessons from previous trials of targeted agents, it is now widely accepted that the establishment of an optimal diagnostic test to select molecularly defined patients is of equal importance to the development of active agents against targetable genetic alterations. Herein, we highlight the current status and future perspectives of companion diagnostics in the treatment of gastric cancer.

Effects of three consecutive monthly intravitreal injection of ranibizumab for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy in Korea

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of three consecutive monthly injections of intravitreal ranibizumab for the treatment of polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV) in ***: A retrospective chart review of 25 patients(27 eyes) with PCV was conducted. Patients received three initial monthly intravitreal injections(0.5 mg) of ranibizumab and were monitored monthly for 12 mo from January 2010 to October 2011. Reinjection of ranibizumab after three initial monthly loading was administered on an as-needed basis, guided by the optical coherence tomography(OCT), fluorescein angiography(FA) and indocyanine green angiography(ICGA). The main outcomes were the changes of the mean best corrected Snellen visual acuity(VA), central macular thickness(CMT) by OCT, the changes of polyps and branching vascular network by FA and ICGA, and total number of injections received by patients during the 12 ***: The mean best corrected Snellen visual acuities at baseline, 1, 3, 6 and 12 mo after primary injection were 0.77 ±0.59, 0.76 ±0.53, 0.70 ±0.47, 0.63 ±0.43,0.61 ±0.43, 0.62 ±0.42 log MAR, respectively, and showed significant improvement at 3, 6, 12mo(P =0.003, P =0.002,P =0.018, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The mean CMT at baseline, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 mo was 312.41 ±66.38 μm,244.59 ±71.47 μm, 232.32 ±69.41 μm, 226.69 ±69.03 μm,228.62 ±37.07 μm, 227.59 ±51.01 μm respectively, and showed significant reduction(all P <0.001, Wilcoxon signed-rank test). Polypoidal lesions resolved on ICGA in 3 eyes(11.1%) and a branching vascular network remained in all 24 eyes(88.9%). A total of 106 injections were given in the 12-month period, which equaled to a mean of 3.92(range, 3-6) times. Sixteen of the 27 treatedeyes had additional 1.56 ±0.91 injections. Evaluation of early-age strains and stresses in roller-compacted concrete pavement

In the structural design of a roller-compacted concrete pavement(RCCP), it is crucial to estimate strain and stress developments in the RCCP slab realistically. Since the RCCP mix uses less cement and lower amount of water, shrinkage strain and concrete temperature during the hardening stage are expected to be reduced as compared to those of conventional concrete mixture, resulting in a reduction of the concrete early-age deformation and stress developments in the RCCP slab. In this paper, early-age concrete strain and stress developments in RCCP slab subjected to environmental loads were evaluated. A full-scale test section of RCCP under real climatic conditions was monitored. The early-age total strains,stress-independent strains, shrinkage strains, and coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of the RCCP were measured and analyzed. Using the results of measured strains, in-situ CTE and shrinkage strain, and temperature, the early-age concrete stress development is computed by incorporating a viscoelastic property of the early-age concrete. The results revealed that the shrinkage strain of the RCCP is quite low as compared to that of conventional concrete. The early-age stress developments in the RCCP slab are strongly governed by the thermal-induced stresses. Shrinkage-induced stresses were quite small and might be negligible in a preliminary estimation of early-age stress developments in the RCCP slab.

Detection and treatment of synchronous lesions in colorectal cancer: The clinical implication of perioperative colonoscopy

AIM： To evaluate the clinical significance of preand intra-operative colonoscopy for the detection of synchronous lesions in colon cancer.METHODS： Two hundred and sixty-five pre-operative and 51 intra-operative colonoscopic evaluations were performed in 316 colorectal cancer patients who underwent curative resection from January 2001 to June 2006. The incidence and characteristics of synchronous lesions and their influence on surgery were evaluated.RESULTS： Two hundred and eighty-two synchronous lesions were detected in 124 （39.2%） of 316 patients including all lesions regardless of their histologic type. True adenomatous polyps were found in 91 （28.8%） of 326 patients, and 27 （5.4% of all patients） patients had synchronous colon cancers. The preoperative identification of synchronous lesions altered the planned surgery in 37 （14.0%） of 265 patients. In 18 patients among the surgically removed cases, the lesions were removed by extending the resection range. Further segmental resection or polypectomy through enterotomy was necessary in 29 patients. Nineteen （37.2%） of 52 intraoperative colonoscopy cases had synchronous lesions. Additional surgical procedures including segmental bowel resection and polypectomy with enterotomy were necessary in 7 （23.7%） of 52 intraoperative colonoscopy cases to remove the lesions.CONCLUSION： Synchronous colorectal polyps or cancer are frequent and their preoperative detection is important for optimal surgical planning and treatment. Intraoperative colonoscopy is a useful option in cases where a preoperative colonoscopy is not feasible.

Semi-crystalline photovoltaic polymers with siloxane-terminated hybrid side-chains

Three types of semi-cry stalline photovoltaic polymers were synthesized by incorporating a siloxane-terminated organic/inorganic hybrid side-chain and changing the number of fluorine substituents.A branch point away from a polymer main backbone in the siloxane-containing side-chains and the intra-and/or interchain noncovalent coulombic interactions enhance a chain planarity and facile interchain *** resulting polymers formed strongly agglomerated films with high roughness,suggesting strong intermolecular *** optical band gap of ca.1.7 eV was measured for all polymers with a pronounced shoulder peak due to tight π-π *** increasing the fluorine substituents,the frontier energy levels decreased and preferential face-on orientation was *** siloxane-terminated side-chains and fluorine substitution promoted the intermolecular packing,showing well resolved lamellar scatterings up to(300) for this series of polymers in the grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering *** PPsiDTBT,PPsiDTFBT and PPsiDT2 FBT devices showed a power conversion efficiency of 3.16%,4.40%and 5.65%,respectively,by blending with PC_(71)***-type bimolecular charge recombination was similar for three polymeric solar *** main loss in the photocurrent generation for PPsiDTBT:PC_(71)BM was interpreted to originate from the trap assisted charge recombination by measuring light-intensity dependent short-circuit current density(J_(SC)) and open-circuit voltage(V_(Oc)).Our results provide a new insight into the rational selection of solubilizing substituents for optimizing crystalline interchain packing with appropriate miscibility with PC71 BM for further optimizing polymer solar cells.

Real-time electrical detection of epidermal skin MoS2 biosensor for point-of-care diagnostics

Various approaches have been proposed for point-of-care diagnostics, and in particular, optical detection is preferred because it is relatively simple and fast. At the same time, field-effect transistor （FET）-based biosensors have attracted great attention because they can provide highly sensitive and label-free detection. In this work we present highly sensitive, epidermal skin-type point-of-care devices with system-level integration of flexible MOS2 FET biosensors, read-out circuits, and light-emitting diode （LEDs） that enable real-time detection of prostate cancer antigens （PSA）. Regardless of the physical forms or mechanical stress conditions, our proposed high-performance MoS2 biosensors can detect a PSA concentration of 1 ***-1 without specific surface treatment for anti-PSA immobilization on the MoS2 surface on which we characterize and confirm physisorption of anti-PSA using Kelvin probe force microscopy （KPFM） and tapping-mode atomic force microscopy （tm-AFM）. Furthermore, current modulation induced by the binding process was stably maintained for longer than 2-3 min. The results indicate that flexible MoS2-based FET biosensors have great potential for point-of-care diagnostics for prostate cancer as well as other biomarkers.

Voice activity detection based on deep belief networks using likelihood ratio

A novel technique is proposed to improve the performance of voice activity detection(VAD) by using deep belief networks(DBN) with a likelihood ratio(LR). The likelihood ratio is derived from the speech and noise spectral components that are assumed to follow the Gaussian probability density function(PDF). The proposed algorithm employs DBN learning in order to classify voice activity by using the input signal to calculate the likelihood ratio. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm yields improved results in various noise environments, compared to the conventional VAD algorithms. Furthermore, the DBN based algorithm decreases the detection probability of error with [0.7, 2.6] compared to the support vector machine based algorithm.

Online Approach for Spatio-Temporal Trajectory Data Reduction for Portable Devices

As location data are widely available to portable devices, trajectory tracking of moving objects has become an essential technology for most location-based services. To maintain such streaming data of location updates from mobile clients, conventional approaches such as time-based regular location updating and distance-based location updating have been used. However, these methods suffer from the large amount of data, redundant location updates, and large trajectory estimation errors due to the varying speed of moving objects. In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient online trajectory data reduction method for portable devices. To solve the problems of redundancy and large estimation errors, the proposed algorithm computes trajectory errors and finds a recent location update that should be sent to the server to satisfy the user requirements. We evaluate the proposed algorithm with real GPS trajectory data consisting of 17 201 trajectories. The intensive simulation results prove that the proposed algorithm always meets the given user requirements and exhibits a data reduction ratio of greater than 87% when the acceptable trajectory error is greater than or equal to 10 meters.
