Background Although smoking is classified as a risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes,there is a scarcity of studies on prevalence of smoking during the COVID-19 ***,this study aims to analyze the trends of prevalence of smoking in adolescents over the COVID-19 pandemic *** the present study used data from middle to high school adolescents between 2005 and 2021 who participated in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(KYRBS).We evaluated the smoking prevalence(ever or daily)by year groups and estimated the slope in smoking prevalence before and during the *** A total of 1,137,823 adolescents participated in the study[mean age,15.04 years[95%confidence interval(CI)15.03-15.06];and male,52.4%(95%CI 51.7-53.1)].the prevalence of ever smokers was 27.7%(95%CI 27.3-28.1)between 2005 and 2008 but decreased to 9.8%(95%CI 9.3-10.3)in 2021.A consistent trend was found in daily smokers,as the estimates decreased from 5.4%(95%CI 5.2-5.6)between 2005 and 2008 to 2.3%(95%CI 2.1-2.5)in ***,the downward slope in the overall prevalence of ever smokers and daily smokers became less pronounced in the COVID-19 pandemic period than in the pre-pandemic *** the subgroup with substance use,the decreasing slope in daily smokers was significantly more pronounced during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic *** the proportion of ever smokers and daily smokers showed a less pronounced decreasing trend during the *** findings of our study provide an overall understanding of the pandemic's impact on smoking prevalence in adolescents.

AIM: to compare characteristics and prognosis of gastric cancer based on ***: A retrospective study was conducted on clinical and molecular data from patients(n =1658) with confirmed cases of gastric cancer in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital(Seoul, South Korea) from 2003 to 2010 after exclusion of patients diagnosed with lymphoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and metastatic cancer in the stomach. DNA was isolated from tumor and adjacent normal tissue,and a set of five markers was amplified by polymerase chain reaction to assess microsatellite instability(MSI). MSI was categorized as high, low, or stable if ≥ 2, 1, or 0 markers, respectively, had *** was performed on tissue sections to detect levels of expression of p53, human epidermal growth factor receptor(HER)-2, and epidermal growth factor receptor. Statistical analysis of clinical and molecular data was performed to assess prognosis based on the stratification of patients by age(≤ 45 and> 45 years).RESULtS: Among the 1658 gastric cancer patients, the number of patients with an age ≤ 45 years was 202(12.2%; 38.9 ± 0.4 years) and the number of patients> 45 years was 1456(87.8%; 64.1 ± 0.3 years).Analyses revealed that females were predominant inthe younger group(P tric cancers in the younger patients exhibited more aggressive features and were at a more advanced stage than those in older patients. Precancerous lesions, such as atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia, were observed less frequently in the older than in the younger group(P teristics, including overexpression of p53(P t in gastric cancer of younger patients. Background: A phase II clinical trial of the comparison between eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) and paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) as first-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) found that the EG regimen was less neurotoxic, but was similar in efficacy to the PG regimen. In the present study, we analyzed functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane (FACt-taxane) questionnaires from patients in this clinical trial to determine their quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was assessed using the Korean version of the FACt-taxane questionnaires. After baseline assessment, QoL was assessed every 2 cycles for 12 cycles and every 3 cycles thereafter. the linear mixed model was used to evaluate the difference in QoL between the EG and PG arms. Results: Of the 118 enrolled patients, 117 responded to the FACt-taxane questionnaires at baseline, 1 in the PG arm did not. Baseline QoL scores were not different between the EG and PG arms. During treatment, taxane subscale scores were significantly higher in the PG arm than in the EG arm after 2-13 cycles of chemotherapy (all P t for the 11th cycle. Neuropathy-specific analysis showed that patients in the PG arm had earlier and more severe neuropathic symptoms than those in the EG arm (P the EG regimen delayed and decreased neuropathy as compared with the PG regimen. therefore, eribulin would be a reasonable substitute for paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy for MBC.

Background Although previous studies have provided data on early pandemic periods of alcohol and substance use in adolescents,more adequate studies are needed to predict the trends of alcohol and substance use during recent periods,including the mid-pandemic *** study investigated the changes in alcohol and substance use,except tobacco use,throughout the pre-,early-,and mid-pandemic periods in adolescents using a nationwide serial cross-sectional survey from South *** Data on 1,109,776 Korean adolescents aged 13–18 years from 2005 to 2021 were obtained in a survey operated by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention *** evaluated adolescents’alcohol and substance consumption prevalence and compared the slope of alcohol and substance prevalence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to see the trend *** define the pre-COVID-19 period as consisting of four groups of consecutive years(2005–2008,2009–2012,2013–2015,and 2016–2019).the COVID-19 pandemic period is composed of 2020(early-pandemic era)and 2021(midpandemic era).Results More than a million adolescents successfully met the inclusion *** weighted prevalence of current alcohol use was 26.8%[95%confidence interval(CI)26.4–27.1]from 2005 to 2008 and 10.5%(95%CI 10.1–11.0)in 2020 and *** weighted prevalence of substance use was 1.1%(95%CI 1.1–1.2)from 2005 to 2008 and 0.7%(95%CI 0.6–0.7)between 2020 and *** 2005 to 2021,the overall trend of use of both alcohol and drugs was found to decrease,but the decline has slowed since COVID-19 epidemic(current alcohol use:βdiff 0.167;95%CI 0.150–0.184;substance use:βdiff 0.152;95%CI 0.110–0.194).the changes in the slope of current alcohol and substance use showed a consistent slowdown with regard to sex,grade,residence area,and smoking status from 2005 to *** the overall prevalence of alcohol consumption and substance use among over one million Korean adolescents from the early and mid-stage(2020–2021)of the COVID

Medulloblastoma（MBL）,the most common malignant pediatric brain tumor,is incurable in about one-third of patients and can lead to long-term disabilities despite current multimodal *** purpose of this study was to demonstrate in vitro biological effects of neurotrophins-3（Nt-3） on MBL cells and to evaluate the growth-inhibitory effect of neurotrophin-3（Nt-3）-secreting stem cells on tumor *** confirmed by western blotting that D283-MED cells express tyrosine kinase C,a specific receptor for *** the biological effects of Nt-3 on MBL cells,we evaluated autophagy,apoptosis,senescence,and differentiation of tumor cells with *** Nt-3 induced a concentrationdependent increase in apoptosis in the tumor cell line（P ＜ 0.001）.the high concentrations of Nt-3 increased the expression of class III β-tubulin（P ＜ 0.001） and decreased the expression of Nestin（P ＜ 0.05）.Nt-3-secreting stem cells were produced by nucleofecting ***-Nt3 into human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells（hAt-MSCs） and were confirmed by fluorescence microscopy and ***-layered co-culture experiments with the Nt-3-secreting hAt-MSCs and D283-MED MBL cells were performed,and Nt-3-induced cell death was studied by 3-（4,5-dimethylathiazol-2-yl）-2,5-dephenyltetrazolium bromide（Mtt） ***,the high concentrations of Nt-3-secreting hAt-MSCs significantly（P ＜ 0.05） increased the death of D283-MED cells in *** present study demonstrated that both apoptotic cell death and neuronal differentiation of tumor cells were the mechanisms of growth-inhibitory effect of Nt-3-secreting hAt-MSCs on MBL cell line.

this study analyzed the mechanical and thermal properties of various rock types found in South *** results showed that both igneous and metamorphic rocks possess higher strength compared to sedimentary *** young's modulus of rocks is dependent on the extent of weathering they have *** average cohesion of granites was found to be relatively higher compared to other rock types,and their friction angle also exhibited a relatively high value with a considerable *** results of uniaxial compression strength testing with respect to depth revealed that rock strength generally increased with depth,however,there was a large variance in strength distribution in each depth *** on these findings,it can be concluded that South Korea can also secure HLW disposal sites and facilities in terms of rock mechanics by using crystalline rocks,similar to countries such as Sweden and Finland where disposal facilities are being *** the thermal properties of rocks,they are influenced by the distribution of the parent *** thermal conductivity is highly concentrated in the southwest and central regions of South Korea,while the geothermal gradient is high in the northeast,west,and some parts of the southeast *** southeast region of Korea has a high geothermal heat flow,and some central northern regions also exhibit relatively high geothermal heat *** light of these distributional characteristics,it is crucial to continue conducting precise studies on the mechanical and thermal properties of rocks in the future disposal depths of spent nuclear fuel.
