Importance of dietary supplementation of soluble and insoluble fibers to sows subjected to high ambient temperatures during late gestation and effects on lactation performance

Heat stress adversely affects sows' performance, which can be improved by applying proper nutritional strategies. This study was conducted to investigate the interactive effects of dietary fiber levels and sources on sows' reproductive performance, metabolic response during gestation, and the carry-over influence on litter performance in the lactation period during heat stress (average room temperature of 27.1 °C). Fifty-four multiparous sows (Landrace × Yorkshire; initial body weight of 236.3 ± 16 kg; 2, 3 and 4 parities) at d 90 of gestation were assigned to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (9 sows/treatment), involving 2 dietary fiber levels (4.5% and 6% crude fiber) and 3 dietary fiber sources (wheat bran [WB], palm kernel meal [PK], and beet pulp [BP]). Sows fed the BP diet had highest ( P P P = 0.041) and litter weight ( P P P P = 0.036) hair cortisol. The blood insulin concentration of sows was higher ( P = 0.026) in the high fiber (6%) treatment compared with the low fiber (4.5%) treatment at 90 min and 120 min after the meal. Development of L-Type Fixation Equipment for Transporting Unit Modules

The unit modular technique is one in which unit modules are prefabricated in a factory and then constructed at a construction site. That is why an important process, transport of unit module, is added in this technique. However, it is not easy to transport a unit module that is high prefabrication ratio （prefab. ratio）（70-90%）, since the walls and interior and exterior materials installed in it can become broken when the unit module is fixed using general fixation tools, including ropes and fixing belts. When the external wall, windows, etc. are damaged during the transportation, the efficiency of unit modular method is deteriorated. Taking this into account, the purpose of this study is to develop an improved fixation device that is convenient for fixing a unit module with a high prefab, ratio to a vehicle and securing the safety while running. The L-type adapter block proposed in this study was evaluated the structural safety through simulation method. The result of the simulation is that it seems desirable to set the working load of the L-type adapter block as 15 kN for Case 1 and 30 kN for Case 2. Therefore, when the L-type adapter block is utilized under the conditions in which the same load is applied as in Case 2, it is expected that safety will be improved.

Enzyme-amplified SERS immunoassay with Ag-Au bimetallic SERS hot spots

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)enables rapid detection of single molecules with high ***,quantitative and sensitive SERS analysis has been a challenge due to the lack of reliable SERS-active *** this study,we developed a quantitative SERS-based immunoassay using enzyme-guided Ag growth on Raman labeling compound(RLC)-immobilized gold nanoparticle(Au NP)-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag).The enzyme amplified Ag+reduction as well as Ag growth on the RLC-immobilized Au NP-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC),which resulted in a significant increase in SERS *** the presence of target antigens such as immunoglobulinG(IgG)or prostate-specific antigen(PSA),Ab1-Antigen-Ab2 immune complex with alkaline phosphatase triggered an enzyme-catalyzed reaction to convert 2-phospho-L-ascorbic acid(2-phospho-L-AA)to ascorbic acid(AA).As produced AA reduced Ag+to Ag,forming an Ag hot spot on the surface of SiO2@Au-RLC,which enhanced the SERS signal of SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag in a solution with a target antigen *** plasmonic immunoassay for IgG detection showed a high linearity of SERS intensity in the range of 0.6 to 9.0 ng/mL with a detection limit(LOD)of 0.09 ng/mL,while an LOD of 0.006 ng/mL was obtained for *** results indicate that the sensitivity of our novel SERS-based immunoassay is higher than that of conventional enzyme-based colorimetric immunoassays.

Sarcopenia is associated with Framingham risk score in the Korean population： Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey （KNHANES） 2010-2011

Background Sarcopenia is a risk factor for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease, but the association between sarcopenia and cardiovascular risk factors according to age and obesity status in the general population remains unknown. We thus investigated these associations in the Korean population. Methods We included 8,958 and 8,518 subjects from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey （KNHANES）（from 2010 and 2011, respectively）. The study was restricted to participants 〉 20 years old who had completed the health examination survey, including whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans. After exclusion, 7,366 subjects （3,188 men, 4,178 women） were included in our final analysis. Age was categorized according to three age groups （20-39, 40-59, mad 〉 60 years）, and subjects were catego- rized according to their sarcopenic and obesity status. Cardiovascular risk was assessed with Framingham risk score （FRS）. Results The sarco- penic obese group had a higher FRS than the non-sarcopenic obese group, which had a higher FRS than the non-sarcopenic non-obese group. Age-wise, the 20-39 year-old group showed a non-significant association between sarcopenia and FRS. In the 40-59 year-old group, regardless of obesity status, sarcopenic subjects had a higher FRS than non-sarcopenic subjects. In the 〉 60 year-old group, sarcopenic subjects had a higher FRS than non-sarcopenic subjects for the non-obese group. Conclusions Sarcopenia was associated with cardiovascular disease and may be an early predictor of its susceptibility in both elderly and middle-aged subjects. Thus, management of sarcopenia is necessary to prevent cardiovascu- lar disease.

Left-sided periappendiceal abscesses occur in association with two types of congenital anomaly: intestinal malrotation and situs inversus. It is diffi cult to obtain an accurate preoperative diagnosis of these abscesses due to the abnormal position of the appendix. We present an unusual case of a left-sided periappendiceal abscess in an adult with intestinal malrotation, the diagnosis of which was a challenge.

Spontaneous rupture of hepatic metastasis from a thymoma: A case report

Bleeding resulting from spontaneous rupture of the liver is an infrequent but potentially life threatening complication that may be associated with an underlying liver disease. A hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatic adenoma is frequently reported is such cases. However, hemoperitoneum resulting from a hepatic metastatic thymoma is extremely rare. Here, we present a case of a 62-year-old man with hypovolemic shock induced by ruptured hepatic metastasis from a thymoma. At the first hospital admission, the patient had a 45-mm anterior mediastinal mass that was eventually diagnosed as a type A thymoma. The mass was excised, and the patient was disease-free for 6 years. He experienced sudden-onset right upper quadrant pain and was again admitted to our hospital. We noted large hemoperitoneum with a 10-cm encapsulated mass in S5/8 and a 2.3-cm nodular lesion in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. He was diagnosed with hepatic metastasis from the thymoma, and he underwent chemotherapy and surgical excision.
