Effect of silicon carbide-based iron catalyst on reactor optimization for non-oxidative direct conversion of methane

The conversion of methane to olefins,aromatics,and hydrogen(MTOAH)can be used to stably obtain hydrocarbons when the effect of the catalytic surface is optimized from the reaction engineering perspective.In this study,Fe/Si C catalysts were packed into a quartz tube reactor.The catalytic surfaces of Si C and the impregnated Fe species decreased the apparent activation energies(E_a)of methane consumption in the blank reactor between 965 and 1020℃.Consequently,the hydrocarbon yield increased by 2.4times at 1020℃.Based on the model reactions of ethane,ethylene,and acetylene mixed with hydrogen in the range of 500-1020℃,an excess amount of Fe in the reactor favored the C-C coupling reaction over the selective hydrogenation of acetylene;consequently,coke formation was favored over the hydrogenation reaction.The gas-phase reactions and catalyst properties were optimized to increase hydrocarbon yields while reducing coke selectivity.The 0.2Fe catalyst-packed reactor(0.26 wt%Fe)resulted in a hydrocarbon yield of 7.1%and a coke selectivity ofjusted to be≥2.Based on these findings,the facile approach of decoupling the reaction zone between the catalyst surface and the gas-phase reaction can provide insights into catalytic reactor design,thereby facilitating the scale-up from the laboratory to the commercial scale.

Does prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA mass improve the accuracy of predicting total prostate volume in relation to obesity in men with biopsy-proven benign prostatic hyperplasia?

We evaluated whether the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA (fPSA)mass (i.e.,absolute amount of total circulating PSA or fPSA protein,respectively),versus serum PSA or fPSA concentration,improves the accuracy of predicting the total prostate volume (TPV)in relation to obesity.Among men whose multicore (≥12)transrectal prostate biopsy was negative,586 who had a PSA of <10 ng ml^-1 and underwent the fPSA test prior to biopsy were enrolled.The PSA mass or fPSA mass (pg)was calculated by multiplying the serum level by plasma volume.At each TPV cut-off point (30 ml,40 ml,and 50 ml),the areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUCs)of each variable were compared in obesity-based subgroups.AUCs of fPSA and fPSA mass for predicting TPV were significantly larger than those for PSA and PSA mass by 8.7%-12.1%at all cut-off points. Subgroup analyses based on obesity showed that,although PSA mass and fPSA mass enhanced accuracy by 4%(P =0.031)and 1.8%(P =0.003),respectively,for determining TPVs of ≥30 ml and ≥50 ml in obese and overweight men,they did not improve the accuracy in most other combinations of the degrees of obesity with TPV cut-off points.Thus,compared with serum PSA or fPSA,the absolute amount of PSA or fPSA protein mass improved the accuracy of predicting TPV in obese men very minimally and only for certain TPV cut-off points.Hence,these indicators may not provide clinically meaningful improvement in predicting TPV in obese men.

Evaluation of the Mrp2-mediated flavonoid-drug interaction potential of quercetin in rats and in vitro models

Quercetin is a biologically active flavonoid that has been used as a popular health supplement.It is reported that quercetin may cause flavonoid-drug interaction mediated by P-glycoprotein,the most predominant efflux transporter.In this study,we comprehensively evaluated the potential of the pharmacokinetic interaction of quercetin mediated by multidrug resistance-associated protein 2(MRP2),another major efflux transporter.MRP2-transfected MDCKII cells and LS174T cells were used to evaluate the potential inhibition and induction of MRP2 by quercetin in vitro.To evaluate the induction effect of quercetin on Mrp2 in vivo,Mrp2 mRNA expression in rat liver,kidney,and small intestinal tissues was determined after the oral administration of quercetin(50,100,or 250 mg/kg)for seven days.Mrp2-mediated interaction potential was also evaluated by the pharmacokinetic study of phenolsulfonphthalein in rats after single or multiple doses of quercetin.Additionally,the effect of quercetin on absorption of docetaxel,a P-glycoprotein and CYP3A4 substrate,was also evaluated.Quercetin inhibited the function of MRP2 at 10μM and induced the mRNA expression of MRP2 at 50μM in vitro.Additionally,at 100 mg/kg,quercetin markedly increased Mrp2 expression in the small intestine of rats.However,there was no significant change in phenolsulfonphthalein pharmacokinetics due to single-(50,100,or 250 mg/kg)or multiple-dose(50,100,or 250 mg/kg for seven days)quercetin co-administration.By contrast,a significant interaction caused by quercetin(100 mg/kg)was observed in the absorption of docetaxel.The results suggested that although quercetin modulates the function and expression of MRP2 in vitro,it may have a low potential of Mrp2-mediated interaction and present negligible safety concerns related to the interaction.

Brain activation induced by different strengths of hand grasp: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Mirror neuron system can be activated by observation and execution of an action.It has an important function of action understanding.We investigated brain activations in humans by observing the strength of a hand grasp using functional magnetic resonance imaging.Twenty right-handed healthy individuals,consisting of 10 males and 10 females,aged 22.40 ± 2.04 years,were recruited into this study from September to November 2017 via posters.Light hand grasp task video showed a hand lightly grasping and releasing a ball repeatedly.Powerful hand grasp task video showed a hand tightly grasping and releasing a ball repeatedly.Functional magnetic resonance imaging block design paradigm comprised five stimulation blocks alternating with five baseline blocks.Stimulation blocks were presented with two stimulus tasks,consisting of a light grasp and a powerful grasp.Region of interest was defined around the inferior parietal lobule,inferior frontal gyrus,and superior temporal sulcus which have been called mirror neuron system.The inferior parietal lobule,fusiform,postcentral,occipital,temporal,and frontal gyri were activated during light and powerful grasp tasks.The BOLD signal response of a powerful grasp was stronger than that of a light grasp.These results suggest that brain activation of the inferior parietal lobule,which is the core brain region of the mirror neuron system,was stronger in the powerful grasp task than in the light grasp task.We believe that our results might be helpful for instructing rehabilitation of brain injury.This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Daegu Oriental Hospital of Daegu Haany University on September 8,2017 (approval No.DHUMC-D-17020-PRO-01).

The extract of Celtis choseniana Nakai alleviates testosterone-in-duced benign prostatic hyperplasia through inhibiting 5αreductase type 2 and the Akt/NF-κB/AR pathway

Benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)is a chronic male disease characterized by the enlarged prostate.Celtis choseniana Nakai(C.choseniana)is medicinally used to alleviate pain,gastric disease,and lung abscess.In this study,the effect of C.choseniana extract on BPH was investigated using testosterone-induced rats.Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups:control,BPH(testosterone 5 mg·kg^(−1)),Fina(finasteride 2 mg·kg^(−1)),and C.choseniana(50 and 100 mg·kg^(−1)).After four weeks of TP treatment with finasteride or C.choseniana,prostate weights and DHT levels were measured.In addition,the prostates were histopathologically examined and measured for protein kinase B(Akt)/nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB)/AR signaling,proliferation,apoptosis,and autophagy.Pro-state weight and epithelial thickness were reduced in the C.choseniana groups compared with that in the BPH group.The extract of C.choseniana acted as a 5αreductase inhibitor,reducing DHT levels in the prostate.Furthermore,the extract of C.choseniana blocked the activation of p-Akt,nuclear NF-κB activation and reduced the expression of AR and PSA compared with BPH.Moreover,the ex-pression of Bax,PARP-1,and p53 increased,while the expression of bcl-2 decreased.The present study demonstrated that C.choseni-ana extract alleviated testosterone-induced BPH by suppressing 5αreductase and Akt/NF-κB activation,reducing AR signaling and in-ducing apoptosis and autophagy in the prostate.These results suggested that C.choseniana probably contain potential herbal agents to alleviate BPH.

Two-Terminal Lithium-Mediated Artificial Synapses with Enhanced Weight Modulation for Feasible Hardware Neural Networks

Recently,artificial synapses involving an electrochemical reaction of Li-ion have been attributed to have remarkable synaptic properties.Three-terminal synaptic transistors utilizing Li-ion intercalation exhibits reliable synaptic characteristics by exploiting the advantage of nondistributed weight updates owing to stable ion migrations.However,the three-terminal configurations with large and complex structures impede the crossbar array implementation required for hardware neuromorphic systems.Meanwhile,achieving adequate synaptic performances through effective Li-ion intercalation in vertical two-terminal synaptic devices for array integration remains challenging.Here,two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses are proposed with the potential for practical implementation of hardware neural networks.The Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt devices demonstrated extraordinary neuromorphic behaviors based on a progressive dearth of Li in LixCoO_(2)films.The intercalation and deintercalation of Li-ion inside the films are precisely controlled over the weight control spike,resulting in improved weight control functionality.Various types of synaptic plasticity were imitated and assessed in terms of key factors such as nonlinearity,symmetricity,and dynamic range.Notably,the LixCoO_(2)-based neuromorphic system outperformed three-terminal synaptic transistors in simulations of convolutional neural networks and multilayer perceptrons due to the high linearity and low programming error.These impressive performances suggest the vertical two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses as promising candidates for hardware neural networks.

What is spinal cord injury:Spinal cord injury(SCI)is the damage to the structure of the bundles of cells and nerves that communicate signals from the brain to the body and extremities.The pathology of SCI includes both primary and secondary injuries(Morales et al.,2016).Physical forces such as compression,shearing,contusion,and tearing are major causes of primary injury in SCI.There are two main processes in primary injury:acute and subacute.The acute phase includes traumatic disruption of axons and hemorrhage of the blood vessels around the spinal cord.Hemorrhagic injury to the vessels can lead to increased edema within the neural and cord tissues,susceptibility to infiltration by microglia and astrocytes,excitotoxicity,and demyelination.Similarly,disruption of the blood-spinal cord barrier results in the release of inflammatory cytokines from specific cells and vessels.

Contemporary trends in radical prostatectomy and predictors of recovery of urinary continence in men aged over 70 years:comparisons between cohorts aged over 70 and less than 70 years

We evaluated contemporary trends in radical prostatectomy(RP)in men aged>70 years and investigated associations of selected variables with recovery of urinary continence(UC)in two age groups:>70 and70 years[n=610]vs70 years gradually increased up to 30.0%,and the rate of robot-assisted RP and neurovascular bundle(NVB)saving increased continually to 80.0%and 67.4%of older patients,respectively.Although the rate of recovery of UC within 12 months(3 months)in patients aged>70 years was lower than that in those aged S70 years(81.5%[52.6%]vs 88.6%[60.9%],respectively;both P70 years.Therefore,unlike younger patients,only variables(age and MUL),possibly associated with the inhere nt fun ction of the urinary sphi ncter,were predictors of recovery of UC in patients aged>70 years.

Development and validation of a clinical nomogram predicting bladder outlet obstruction via routine clinical parameters in men with refractory nonneurogenic lower urinary tract symptoms

We aimed to develop and validate a clinical nomogram predicting bladder outlet obstruction(BOO)solely using routine clinical parameters in men with refractory nonneurogenic lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS).A total of 750 eligible patient ≥50 years of age who had previously not responded(International Prostate Symptom Score[IPSS]improvement2 cmH20 ml^-1 s^-1.A stepwise multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of BOO,and^-coefficients of the final model were selected to create a clinical nomogram.The final multivariable logistic regression model showed that age,IPSS,maximum urinary flow rate,postvoid residual volume,total prostate volume,and transitional zone index were significant for predicting BOO;these candidates were used to develop the final nomogram.The discrimination performance of the nomogram was 88.3%(95%Cl:82.7%-93.0%,P<0.001),and the nomogram was reasonably we 11-fitted to the ideal line of the calibration plot.Independe nt split-sample validation revealed 80.9%(95%Cl:75.5%-84.4%,P<0.001)accuracy.The proposed BOO nomogram based solely on routine clinical parameters was accurate and validated properly.This nomogram may be useful in determining further treatment,primarily focused on prostatic surgery for BOO,without impeding the detection of possible BOO in men with LUTS that is refractory to empirical medications.

CONVERGENCE ANALYSIS ON ITERATIVE METHODS FOR SEMIDEFINITE SYSTEMS

The convergence analysis on the general iterative methods for the symmetric and positive semidefinite problems is presented in this paper. First, formulated are refined necessary and sumcient conditions for the energy norm convergence for iterative methods. Some illustrative examples for the conditions are also provided. The sharp convergence rate identity for the Gauss-Seidel method for the semidefinite system is obtained relying only on the pure matrix manipulations which guides us to obtain the convergence rate identity for the general successive subspace correction methods. The convergence rate identity for the successive subspace correction methods is obtained under the new conditions that the local correction schemes possess the local energy norm convergence. A convergence rate estimate is then derived in terms of the exact subspace solvers and the parameters that appear in the conditions. The uniform convergence of multigrid method for a model problem is proved by the convergence rate identity. The work can be regradled as unified and simplified analysis on the convergence of iteration methods for semidefinite problems [8, 9].
