Photoelectrochemical(PEC)H_(2)O_(2)production through water oxidation reaction(WOR)is a promising strategy,however,designing highly efficient and selective photoanode materials remains challenging due to competitive reaction pathways.Here,for highly enhanced PEC H_(2)O_(2)production,we present a conformal amorphous titanyl phosphate(a-TP)overlayer on nanoparticulate TiO_(2)surfaces,achieved via lysozyme-molded in-situ surface reforming.The a-TP overlayer modulates surface adsorption energies for reaction intermediates,favoring WOR for H_(2)O_(2)production over the competing O_(2)evolution reaction.Our density functional theory calculations reveal that a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits a substantial energy uphill for the O·*formation pathway,which disfavors O_(2)evolution but promotes H_(2)O_(2)production.Additionally,the a-TP overlayer strengthens the built-in electric field,resulting in favorable kinetics.Consequently,a-TP/TiO_(2)exhibits 3.7-fold higher Faraday efficiency(FE)of 63%at 1.76 V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)under 1 sun illumination,compared to bare TiO_(2)(17%),representing the highest FE among TiO_(2)-based WOR H_(2)O_(2)production systems.Employing the a-TP overlayer constitutes a promising strategy for controlling reaction pathways and achieving efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate hinders the osteogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells in association with AKT signaling pathways

Sphingosine-1-phosphate(S1P)is an important lipid mediator that regulates a diverse range of intracellular cell signaling pathways that are relevant to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.However,the precise function of S1P in dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs)and its osteogenic differentiation remains unclear.We here investigated the function of S1P/S1P receptor(S1PR)-mediated cellular signaling in the osteogenic differentiation of DPSCs and clarified the fundamental signaling pathway.Our results showed that S1P-treated DPSCs exhibited a low rate of differentiation toward the osteogenic phenotype in association with a marked reduction in osteogenesis-related gene expression and AKT activation.Of note,both S1PR1/S1PR3 and S1PR2 agonists significantly downregulated the expression of osteogenic genes and suppressed AKT activation,resulting in an attenuated osteogenic capacity of DPSCs.Most importantly,an AKT activator completely abrogated the S1P-mediated downregulation of osteoblastic markers and partially prevented S1P-mediated attenuation effects during osteogenesis.Intriguingly,the pro-inflammatory TNF-αcytokine promoted the infiltration of macrophages toward DPSCs and induced S1P production in both DPSCs and macrophages.Our findings indicate that the elevation of S1P under inflammatory conditions suppresses the osteogenic capacity of the DPSCs responsible for regenerative endodontics.

Pollen tube growth is essential for successful double fertilization, which is critical for grain yield in crop plants. Rapid alkalinization factors(RALFs) function as ligands for signal transduction during fertilization. However, functional studies on RALF in monocot plants are lacking.Herein, we functionally characterized two pollen-specific RALFs in rice(Oryza sativa) using multiple clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9-induced loss-of-function mutants,peptide treatment, expression analyses, and tag reporter lines. Among the 41 RALF members in rice, OsRALF17 was specifically expressed at the highest level in pollen and pollen tubes.Exogenously applied OsRALF17 or OsRALF19peptide inhibited pollen tube germination and elongation at high concentrations but enhanced tube elongation at low concentrations, indicating growth regulation. Double mutants of OsRALF17 and OsRALF19(ralf17/19) exhibited almost full male sterility with defects in pollen hydration, germination, and tube elongation,which was partially recovered by exogenous treatment with OsRALF17 peptide. This study revealed that two partially functionally redundant OsRALF17 and OsRALF19 bind to Oryza sativa male-gene transfer defective 2(OsMTD2) and transmit reactive oxygen species signals for pollen tube germination and integrity maintenance in rice. Transcriptomic analysis confirmed their common downstream genes, in osmtd2 and ralf17/19. This study provides new insights into the role of RALF, expanding our knowledge of the biological role of RALF in regulating rice fertilization.

Hydrangea serrata extract exerts tumor inhibitory activity against hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells via inducing p27/CDK2-mediated cell cycle arrest and apoptosis

Objective:To examine the inhibitory effect of Hydrangea serrata extract against hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells and its underlying mechanisms.Methods:The effects of Hydrangea serrata extract on growth inhibition of tumor cells and spheroids were assessed using MTT and 3D culture assays.Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot analyses were employed to investigate the changes in mRNA and protein expression levels of molecules related to cell cycle and apoptosis.Results:Hydrangea serrata extract effectively inhibited the growth of both tumor cells and spheroids.The extract also significantly upregulated p27 mRNA expression and downregulated CDK2 mRNA expression,leading to cell cycle arrest.Moreover,increased BAX/Bcl-2 ratio as well as caspase-9 and-3 were observed after treatment with Hydrangea serrata extract,indicating the induction of tumor cell apoptosis.Conclusions:Hydrangea serrata extract has the potential to alleviate tumors by effectively modulating cell-cycle-related gene expressions and inducing apoptosis,thereby inhibiting tumor growth.

Experience of primary intestinal lymphangiectasia in adults: Twelve case series from a tertiary referral hospital

BACKGROUND While primary intestinal lymphangiectasia(PIL)is considered a rare condition,there have been several reported cases in adults.Nevertheless,the absence of clear guidance from diagnosis to treatment and prognosis poses challenges for both physicians and patients.AIM To enhance understanding by investigating clinical presentation,diagnosis,treatment,complications,and prognoses in adult PIL cases.METHODS We enrolled adult patients diagnosed with PIL between March 2016 and September 2021.The primary outcome involved examining the diagnosis and treatment process of these patients.The secondary outcomes included identifying complications(infections,thromboembolism)and assessing prognoses(frequency of hospitalization and mortality)during the follow-up period.RESULTS Among the 12 included patients,peripheral edema(100%)and diarrhea(75%)were the main presenting complaints.Laboratory tests showed that all the pati-ents exhibited symptoms of hypoalbuminemia and hypogammaglobulinemia.Radiologically,the predominant findings were edema of the small intestine(67%)and ascites(58%).The typical endoscopic finding with a snowflake appearance was observed in 75%of patients.Among the 12 patients,two responded positive-ly to octreotide and sirolimus,and eight who could undergo maintenance therapy discontinued subsequently.Complications due to PIL led to infection in half of the patients,thromboembolism in three patients,and one death.CONCLUSION PIL can be diagnosed in adults across various age groups,with different severity and treatment responses among patients,leading to diverse complications and prognoses.Consequently,tailored treatments will be necessary.We anticipate that our findings will contribute to the management of PIL,an etiology of protein-losing enteropathy.

Intelligent applications,with tactile sensors at their core,represent significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence.However,achieving perception abilities in tactile sensors that match or exceed human skin remains a formidable challenge.Consequently,the design and implementation of hierarchical structural materials are considered the optimal solution to this challenge.In contrast to conventional methods,such as complicated lithography and three-dimensional printing,the cost-effective and scalable nature of advanced solution-synthesis methods makes them ideal for preparing diverse tactile sensors with hierarchical structural materials.However,the process and applicability of advanced solution synthesis methods have yet to form a seamless system.Accordingly,the development and intellectualization of tactile sensors based on advanced solution synthesis methods are still in their early stages,and require a comprehensive and systematic review to usher in progress.This study delves into the advantages and disadvantages of various advanced solution synthesis methods,providing detailed insights.Furthermore,the positive effects of hierarchical structural materials constructed using these methods in tactile sensors and their intelligent applications are also discussed in depth.Finally,the challenges and future opportunities faced by this emerging field are summarized.

Dual in-situ observation of tribochemical and morphological evolution of single-layer WS_(2)and multi-layer WS_(2)/C coatings

The outstanding tribological performance of transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)is attributed to their unique sandwich microstructure and low interlayer shear stress.This advantageous structure allows TMDs to demonstrate exceptional friction reduction properties.Furthermore,the incorporation of TMDs and amorphous carbon(a-C)in multi-layer structures shows excellent potential for further enhancing tribological and anti-oxidation properties.Amorphous carbon,known for its high ductility,chemical inertness,and excellent wear resistance,significantly contributes to the overall performance of these multi-layer coatings.To gain an in-depth understanding of the tribological mechanism and evolution of TMDs’multi-layer coatings,a dual in-situ analysis was carried out using a tribometer equipped with a 3D laser microscope and a Raman spectrometer.This innovative approach allowed for a comprehensive evolution of the tribological,topographical,and tribochemical characteristics of both single-layer WS_(2)and multi-layer WS_(2)/C coatings in real time.The findings from the dual in-situ tribotest revealed distinct failure characteristics between the single-layer WS_(2)coating and the multi-layer WS_(2)/C coating.The single-layer WS_(2)coating predominantly experienced failure due to mechanical removal,whereas a combination of mechanical removal and tribochemistry primarily influenced the failure of the multi-layer WS_(2)/C coating.The tribological evolution process of these two coatings can be classified into four stages on the basis of their tribological behavior:the running-in stage,stable friction stage,re-deposition stage,and lubrication failure stage.Each stage represents a distinct phase in the tribological behavior of the coatings and contributes to our understanding of their behavior during sliding.

Tailoring Classical Conditioning Behavior in TiO_(2) Nanowires:ZnO QDs-Based Optoelectronic Memristors for Neuromorphic Hardware

Neuromorphic hardware equipped with associative learn-ing capabilities presents fascinating applications in the next generation of artificial intelligence.However,research into synaptic devices exhibiting complex associative learning behaviors is still nascent.Here,an optoelec-tronic memristor based on Ag/TiO_(2) Nanowires:ZnO Quantum dots/FTO was proposed and constructed to emulate the biological associative learning behaviors.Effective implementation of synaptic behaviors,including long and short-term plasticity,and learning-forgetting-relearning behaviors,were achieved in the device through the application of light and electrical stimuli.Leveraging the optoelectronic co-modulated characteristics,a simulation of neuromorphic computing was conducted,resulting in a handwriting digit recognition accuracy of 88.9%.Furthermore,a 3×7 memristor array was constructed,confirming its application in artificial visual memory.Most importantly,complex biological associative learning behaviors were emulated by mapping the light and electrical stimuli into conditioned and unconditioned stimuli,respectively.After training through associative pairs,reflexes could be triggered solely using light stimuli.Comprehen-sively,under specific optoelectronic signal applications,the four features of classical conditioning,namely acquisition,extinction,recovery,and generalization,were elegantly emulated.This work provides an optoelectronic memristor with associative behavior capabilities,offering a pathway for advancing brain-machine interfaces,autonomous robots,and machine self-learning in the future.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) is becoming a popular procedure for the diagnosis and treatment of superficial mucosal lesions,and has the advantage of en bloc resection which yields a higher complete resection and remission rate compared to endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR).However,the learning process of this advanced endoscopic procedure requires a lengthy training period and considerable experience to be proficient.A well framed training protocol which is safe,effective,easily reproducible and cost-effective is desirable to teach ESD.In addition,the training course may need to be tailored around settings such as ethnicity,culture,workload,and disease incidence.In Asian countries with a large volume of early gastric lesions which need endoscopic treatment,endoscopists would be able to learn ESD expanding their skills from EMR to ESD under the supervision of experts.Whereas,in Western countries due to the low incidence of superficial gastric tumors,trials have utilized simulator models to improve learning.In Korea,the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy(KSGE) is playing an important role in training many gastroenterologists who have shown an interest in performing ESD by providing an annual live demonstration and a nationwide tutoring program.The purpose of this article is to introduce our ESD tutoring experience,review the published papers related to this topic,and propose several suggestions for future directions in teaching and learning ESD.

Alleviatory effect of isoquercetin on benign prostatic hyperplasia via IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway

We evaluated the effect of isoquercetin(quercetin-O-3-glucoside-quercetin,IQ)as a functional component of Abeliophyllum disistichum Nakai ethanol extract(ADLE)on prostate cell proliferation and apoptosis and its effects on the IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Metabolites in ADLE were analyzed using UHPLC-qTOF-MS and HPLC.IQ was orally administered(1 or 10 mg/kg)to a testosterone propionate-induced BPH rat model,and its effects on the prostate weight were evaluated.The effect of IQ on androgen receptor(AR)signaling was analyzed in LNCaP cells.Whether IGF-1 and IQ affect the IGF-1/PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway in BPH-1 cells was also examined.The metabolites in ADLE were identified and quantified,which confirmed that ADLE contained abundant IQ(20.88 mg/g).IQ significantly reduced the prostate size in a concentration-dependent manner in a BPH rat model,and significantly decreased the expression of AR signaling factors in the rat prostate tissue and LNCaP cells in a concentration-dependent manner.IQ also inhibited the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway activated by IGF-1 treatment in BPH-1 cells.In BPH-1 cells,IQ led to G0/G1 arrest and suppressed the expression of proliferation factors while inducing apoptosis.Thus,IQ shows potential for use as a pharmaceutical and nutraceutical for BPH.
