Commercial ELISA kits are commonly used to assess the levels of chicken antibodies against NewCastle Disease Virus (NDV) and trace a field strain infection. Nevertheless, the specificity of these kits vis-à-vis endemic strains in Lebanon remains in question. This study developed an in-house indirect ELISA system to evaluate the level of chicken antibodies against a predominant velogenic NDV strain belonging to Genotype VI. A checkerboard analysis comprised a five-factorial multivariate experiment to optimize the protocol: coating antigen concentration, blocking buffer utilization, serum and conjugate dilution levels, and OD reading wavelength. The developed test was optimized and then validated through parallel testing of the sera of 20 broilers and 5 layers using standard serological assays. There was a strong correlation between the developed ELISA results and those obtained with the Hemagglutination Inhibition test (P < 0.01), and a commercial NDV ELISA kit (P < 0.05). The specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility of the developed ELISA suggest that it can be used as the test of choice for the assessment of chicken antibody titers against locally circulating velogenic NDV strains, specifically those belonging to Genotype VI. It also offers better help in the serological detection of birds’ exposure to the said strains.

A novel approach to detect and filter out an unhealthy dataset from a matrix of datasets is developed, tested, and proved. The technique employs a new type of self organizing map called Accumulative Statistical Spread Map (ASSM) to establish the destructive and negative effect a dataset will have on the rest of the matrix if stayed within that matrix. The ASSM is supported by training a neural network engine, which will determine which dataset is responsible for its inability to learn, classify and predict. The carried out experiments proved that a neural system was not able to learn in the presence of such an unhealthy dataset that possessed some deviated characteristics, even though it was produced under the same conditions and through the same process as the rest of the datasets in the matrix, and hence, it should be disqualified, and either removed completely or transferred to another matrix. Such novel approach is very useful in pattern recognition of datasets and features that do not belong to their source and could be used as an effective tool to detect suspicious activities in many areas of secure filing, communication and data storage.

A hypothesis of the existence of dominant pattern that may affect the performance of a neural based pattern recognition system and its operation in terms of correct and accurate classification, pruning and optimization is assumed, presented, tested and proved to be correct. Two sets of data subjected to the same ranking process using four main features are used to train a neural network engine separately and jointly. Data transformation and statistical pre-processing are carried out on the datasets before inserting them into the specifically designed multi-layer neural network employing Weight Elimination Algorithm with Back Propagation (WEA-BP). The dynamics of classification and weight elimination process is correlated and used to prove the dominance of one dataset. The presented results proved that one dataset acted aggressively towards the system and displaced the first dataset making its classification almost impossible. Such modulation to the relationships among the selected features of the affected dataset resulted in a mutated pattern and subsequent re-arrangement in the data set ranking of its members.

Many formal institutions, companies, hospitals, laboratories need some time to exchange hand signed reports through modern communication means such as Fax, E-mails, and others. A problem is faced due to the quality of both scanned documents and originally used paper, which results in problems in converting such images to text. In addition, font type and size, contrast and background darkness have an adverse effect on the accuracy of the resulted text. Thus, an investigation into the relationship between scanned document zoom and scanning resolution in Dots per Inch (DPI) for a special case and type of scanned forms is carried out to enable design of an algorithm that takes into account such cases. It is found that a much higher level of zooming and resolution is needed to achieve acceptable recognition for the special case of dark, low contrast, small font forms. It is also found that the optimum zooming level is set by the number of recognized words as they are more difficult to learn and analyze.

A novel approach employs the principles of medical image analysis using Wavelet Transform (WT) and Difference Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (ΔPSNR). Both techniques are combined as a function of different decomposing levels of wavelets and various image search through and slicing levels, which is implemented under MATLAB environment. In this new approach, the structural change due to damage in the component or the presence of foreign bodies appearing in an image taken for a specific structure is uncovered with its extent determined after applying the search through algorithm. Such alteration of the composite structure, which could be masked by the presence of noise, is accounted for using combined WT and PSNR. Effect of Artifacts and Blurring caused by different wavelet types is investigated before choosing an appropriate wavelet, namely Sym8. This new approach, which also reduces the required layers of search within an image, produces a pattern matrix per damaged area and is an excellent way in tracing and modeling damage in structures with ability to predict effects of further damage on components and further application to artificial limbs that could suffer damage and affect users mobility.

A new approach to NDT of composite structures using Band Elimination of the analyzed image index by Hyperspectral image analysis approach is presented and discussed. The matrix Band Elimination technique allows the monitoring and analysis of a components structure based on Filtering of bands and correlation between sequentially pulsed thermal images and their indices. The technique produces several matrices resulting from frame deviation and pixel redistribution calculations for intelligent classification and property prediction. The obtained results proved the technique to be capable of identifying damaged components with ability to model various types of damage under different conditions.

The appropriate use of antibiotics prophylaxis reduces the incidence of surgical site infections. Despite advances in antiseptic measures, antibiotics, and preoperative precautions, infections are common complications from surgeries. This study was conducted to assess the appropriateness of the prescription of antibiotics prophylaxis prior to cardiac surgery among hospitalized patients in the geographic area of Lebanon. This was a retrospective, observational, single center study conducted at a public Lebanese teaching hospital from February till April 2014. Data were collected from computerized data bases for hospitalized patients who did cardiac surgeries from January 2010 till December 2013. Patients above eighteen years old undergoing CABG (coronary artery by-pass graft), valve surgery, or both were eligible for study enrollment. Excluded were patients younger than eighteen years of age, prior intake of antibiotics, or had another concomitant surgery with the cardiac. Consistency with the guidelines was evaluated for appropriate route of administration, choice, preoperative timing, duration, dosing, and redosing of antibiotics. The IRB (Institutional Review Board) approved the study design. Data were analyzed by the SPSS version 20.0 and presented as frequency/percentage and mean ± SD (standard deviation). A total of 3,000 patients were initially screened where only 245 patients met the inclusion criteria. Baseline age of the participants was 58.91 ± 13.65 years (mean ± standard deviation SD), and a body mass index of 28.19 ± 5.19 Kg/m2. The enrolled participants were on different intravenous antibiotic regimens, where 188 (76.7%) patients were on vancomycin and ceftriaxone, 15 (6.1%) on vancomycin and cefuroxime, 13 (5.3%) on ceftriaxone, 12 (4.9%) on vancomycin, 6 (2.4%) on cefuroxime, 2 (0.8%) on clindamycin), and the others were on combination of gentamicin and a cephalosporin. Only twelve (4.9%) from the enrolled patients were consistent with the treatment

Aminoglycosides are a family of antibiotics with important applications in veterinary medicine. Their ionic character, the similarity structures and the high polarity due to the presence of two or more amino and hydroxyl groups cause a difficulty in separation and make these compounds poorly retained on the reversed phase column. An analytical method for the separation and detection of 12 aminoglycosides has been optimized using two kinds of chromatographic conditions (HILIC, Ion pairing). In Hydrophilic Interaction, ZIC_HILIC column was used, by which the following parameters for the mobile phase were evaluated: concentration of ammonium acetate buffer, percentage of formic acid and effect of acid type. The maximum and adequate concentration of ammonium acetate for the majority of analytes was set to 30 mM. The percentage 0.1% of formic acid increases the response for the majority of analytes. On the other side, the use of 0.1% of trifluoroacetic acid improves the response when compared with the response obtained with 0.1% of formic acid except for Spectinomycin Dihydrostreptomycin and Streptomycin. For ion pairing chromatography, the concentration of pentafluoropropionic acid was tested and the greatest value appeared to be 9.2 mM. Therefore, the comparison between the two separation methods shows that the response area of the majority of analytes tested increases when using the ion pair mode. Also, the high value of S/N and the lower detection limit (5 - 15 μg m·L﹣1 for most aminoglycosides studied make the ion pairing method more preferable than HILIC interaction.

Multiresidue Method for Determination of 67 Pesticides in Water Samples Using Solid-Phase Extraction with Centrifugation and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

A new multi-residue method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) with centrifugation was developed for determination and quantitation of 67 pesticides in water samples. Two SPE cartridges were tested: Chromabond C18 and Oasis HLB. Parameters that influence the extraction efficiency such as the eluent volume, the sample loading volume, the addition of organic solvent to water sample, sorbent drying and elute concentration were optimized. The innovation of this work was the examination of the use of a centrifugation technique in both the drying and elution steps. When combined with centrifugation, the volume of the elution solvent was reduced to 2 mL and the time for sorbent drying decreased also to 10 min under vacuum. Under the optimized conditions, this method showed good recoveries higher than 65% - 68% for the 67 analyzed pesticides using the C18 and HLB cartridges with relative standard deviations lower than 9.7% - 12.3%. Limits of quantification were between 2 and 20 ng.L–1. The simplicity of the described method, use of less of organic solvent, short procedure time, and good recoveries demonstrate the advantages of this environmentally friendly approach for routine analysis of numerous samples.
