Plant Digestive Supplement Designed by Lactobacillus Regulated Leukocyte Subsets through Activation of Complement Components and Implication for Use against Tumor Bearing Host against Infection

A plant material consisted by Family Poaceae was fermented by Yeast and Lactobaccilli (U-164). This material was proved by as safe in animal safety experiment for oral administration. In order to prove the effect of U-164 against physiological function, the animal and human trials were set up to look into mainly leukocyte functions. In animal experiment, anti-oxidative effect and antibody response in immune-compromised host and diabetes meritus were made up. For human use, peripheral lymphocyte in number and subset ratio were followed up to one month after administration. In order to understand its effect, human complement component analysis was made by immune-electrophoresis. Our results showed that U-164 augmented the level of lymphocytes, while U-164 down regulated the level of granulocytes. In our clinical study with 19 healthy volunteers, granulocyte and lymphocyte ratio was obtained as neutral in peripheral blood being increased significantly 30 days after the ingestion of U-164. In experimental animal study, the compromised host as well as normal animal was administered with cancer chemotherapeutic agent (Mytomycin-C). Our observations showed against antibody producing cell, this material recovered the antibody production in the host compromising the immure responsiveness. We also proposed an idea that U-164 exhibited tonic effects via activating complement components. Moreover, we tried to access further to the anti-oxidative activities of this U-164. This modification brought to the significant lifted up for anti-oxidative activity for phagocytic cell.

Primary Ovarian Carcinosarcoma: Cytological, Pathological, Immunocytochemical, and Immunohistochemical Features

Ovarian carcinosarcoma composed of high-grade carcinoma and sarcoma is an extremely rare neoplasm and typically occurs in postmenopausal women aged over 60 years. A 73-year-old female, gravida three para three, presented to our hospital with right lower abdominal pain. Right pelvic solid tumor with ascites was detected on pelvic ultrasound examination. She underwent hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and partial omentectomy, but the tumor had invaded to the right ureter, and some fragile tumor could not be taken (sub-optimal surgery). On the imprint and ascitic cytology specimens during operation, atypical cells suggestive of adenocarcinoma and spindle atypical cells with immunocytochemically vimentin positive were found. The resected tumor was histopathologically carcinosarcoma consisted of serous adenocarcinoma, chondrosarcoma and fibrosarcoma. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that adenocarcinoma cells were positive for AE1/AE3 and fibrosarcoma cells stained with vimentin. The final diagnosis was the right ovarian carcinosarcoma (stage pT3CNxMx). Microsatellite instability was stable and BRCA1/2 mutations could not be found in the carcinosarcoma cells. The patient was given four cycles of chemotherapy with paclitaxel, carboplatin and bevacizumab regimen, and thereafter she was treated with the ifosfamide and cisplatin because of slight elevation of serum CA125.

Approaches for High-Efficiency III-V/Si Tandem Solar Cells

The Si tandem solar cells are very attractive for realizing high efficiency and low cost. This paper overviews current status of III-V/Si tandem solar cells including our results. The analytical results for efficiency potential of Si tandem solar cells and loss analysis of Si bottom cells as well as bandgap energy optimization of sub-cells are presented. The 2-junction and 3-junction Si tandem solar cells have potential efficiencies of 36% and 42%, respectively. ERE (external radiative efficiency) analysis for Si solar cells is analyzed in order to clarify properties of Si bottom solar cells. Properties of single-crystalline Si heterojunction solar cell fabricated in this study were analyzed. The current status of efficiencies of our Si bottom cell, upper III-V 2-junction solar cell and III-V/Si 3-junction tandem solar cell was shown to be 5.2% and 28.6% and 33.8%. Achievement of Jsc of 12 mA/cm2 for Si bottom cell is necessary to realize high-efficiency 3-junction Si tandem solar cells with an efficiency of more than 37%. In addition, this paper presents ERE analysis of III-V 2-junction upper solar cells for improving III-V/Si 3-junction tandem solar cells. Several ways to improve efficiency of III-V/Si 3-junction tandem solar cells by reducing non-radiative recombination, optical and resistance losses are shown.

A Case of Serous Tubal Intraepithelial Carcinoma Diagnosed by Cytology during the Operation

We experienced a case of serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), which is the earliest morphologically recognizable precursor of pelvic high grade serous carcinoma, diagnosed by cytology during the operation. A 48-year-old Japanese woman visited to our department because of abnormal cytological result and the left adnexal mass on female cancer screening. Pre-operatively, she was diagnosed as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 3, adenomyosis, and the left adnexal cystic lesion with papillary growth. At laparotomy, the left adnexal tumor turned out to be cystic fallopian tube with small papillary growth on the inner surface, but abnormal findings were not present on bilateral ovaries. The cytology of the imprint smears from the papillary projection and ascitic fluid showed positive, suggesting serous adenocarcinoma. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed the left fallopian tube lesion was STIC with immunohistochemically positive reactivity against p53. No metastases including disseminated lesions were noted. The patient received four courses of systemic chemotherapy, and had no recurrent signs 10 months after the operation.

The relationships between expressed emotion (EE) of the families and the course of bipolar disorder have been examined only in a limited number of cohort studies. No study has yet been reported from Asia. The subjects were 12 patients that had been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder according to DSM-IV and their 12 key family members. The families of the patients were interviewed using the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI) within 2 weeks of the admission of the patients, and their EE were evaluated. The patients were then followed up for 9 months after their discharge from the hospital. The patients were divided into a high-EE group and a low-EE group using the cut-off based on the number of critical comments (CC) and emotional overinvolvement (EOI), and the 9-month relapse risk was compared. When the subjects with 3 or more CC or an EOI score of 3 or more were regarded as the high-EE group, and the others as the low-EE group, the 9-month relapse risk was 100% (3/3) for the high EE group and 0% (0/9) for the low EE group. (Fisher’s exact test p = 0.005) EE based on the CFI appear to be correlated with relapse in bipolar I disorder in Japan.

Phagocytic cells are known as multi potent activities for its ontogenical and phylogenetical aspect. One of the strike actions is super oxide anion known as critical role of the cell when microorganisms invade inside the cytoplasm. This agent sometimes triggered as a serious factor in the site of inflammation. There are many papers which concerned newly accessed anti-oxidative substances. However, many reports only focused on the molecular basis in vitro, suggesting vin rouge for their rich content of polyphonol rather than vin blank with a French paradox. We had been suggested that the key factor for oxidative stress needs to be discussed first for immunological standpoint, such as in phagocytic cell in situ. With this assay system in rodent macrophage, SO level was about the same for both groups administered vin blank as well as vin rouge.

A Case of Male Anorgasmia with Cerebral Infarction

Objective: The deficit of male orgasm is an unusual clinical condition. This is a case report on secondary male anorgasmia with cerebral infarction. Material and Method: The patient was a 55-year-old man who had suffered from male anorgasmia, acquired type. The patient had a normal erectile response, but ejaculated without any sensation of orgasm. The patient underwent an evaluation by a psychiatrist and an urologist trained in sexual medicine. Result: The results of physical, psychological, and laboratory examination were normal. Brain MRI revealed cerebral infarction at bilateral parietal lobes and frontal lobes. Conclusion: There is a possibility that these brain regions are related to male orgasmic dysfunction.

Change in Aggregate Shape of Heat Treated Carbon Nanoparticles

To better understand the fusion mechanism of heated carbon black, heat treatment is conducted for carbon black produced by benzene pyrolysis. The effects of （a） heating time, （b） heating temperature and （c） heating rate on the aggregate shape and mean primary particle diameter of the carbon black are investigated using TEM （transmission electron microscopy）. The mean primary particle diameter does not change significantly when carbon black is heat treated. For short heating times and low heating temperatures, the aggregate shapes become simple when compared with those of non-heated carbon black, and shapes become complex with an increase in the heating time. Also, for low heating rates, the aggregate shapes become significantly simple when compared with those of non-heated carbon black. The results of this study suggest that sintering between primary particles is promoted under relatively low heating temperatures, and Ostwald ripening among aggregates is promoted under relatively high heating temperatures.

Dual-Energy X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanner Using Two Different Energy-Selection Electronics and a Lutetium-Oxyorthosilicate Photomultiplier Detector

To obtain two kinds of tomograms at two different X-ray energy ranges simultaneously, we have constructed a dual-energy X-ray photon counter with a lutetium-oxyorthosilicate photomultiplier detector system, three comparators, two microcomputers, and two frequency-voltage converters. X-ray photons are detected using the detector system, and the event pulses are input to three comparators simultaneously to determine threshold energies. At a tube voltage of 100 kV, the three threshold energies are 16, 35 and 52 keV, and two energy ranges are 16 - 35 and 52 - 100 keV. X-ray photons in the two ranges are counted using microcomputers, and the logical pulses from the two microcomputers are input to two frequency-voltage converters. In dual-energy computed tomography (CT), the tube voltage and current were 100 kV and 0.29 mA, respectively. Two tomograms were obtained simultaneously at two energy ranges. The energy ranges for gadolinium-L-edge and K-edge CT were 16 - 35 and 52 - 100 keV, respectively. The maximum count rate of dual-energy CT was 105 kilocounts per second with energies ranging from 16 to 100 keV, and the exposure time for tomography was 19.6 min.
