Rikkunshi-to Partially Reverses Cancer Chemotherapy-Induced Decrease in Plasma Valproic Acid Concentration in a Patient with Malignant Lymphoma

A fifty-five-year-old male patient with malignant lymphoma who took oral valproic acid (VPA) tablets and itraconazole (ITZ) capsles received 3 courses of cancer chemotherapy, including 2 courses of a combination of rituximab/methotrexate/ifosphamide/etoposide/ carboplatin/ methylpredonisolon (R-IMVP16/CBDCA regimen) and subsequent one course of a combination of rituximab/ranimustine/citara bine/etoposide/merphalan (R-MEAM regimen). Plasma concentration of VPA dramatically decreased below the therapeutic concentration after the first and second chemotherapy and seizures appeared in both cases. Plasma concentration of ITZ was also lowered after the second chemotherapy course. At the third chemotherapy, Rikkunshi-to, a Japanese herbal medicine, was prescribed for 14 days. Plasma VPA concentration decreased, though to a lesser extent, after chemotherapy, in which the level was near the border of therapeutic concentration. No convulsion was observed. Therefore, care should be taken to monitor plasma drug concentration during cancer chemotherapy. Rikkunshi-to may be useful to alleviate the chemotherapy-induced decrease in plasma concentrations of orally administered drugs.

The neuromuscular junction(NMJ)is an essential synaptic structure composed of motor neurons,skeletal muscles,and glial cells that orchestrate the critical process of muscle contraction(Li et al.,2018).The typical NMJ structure is classically described as having a“pretzel-like”shape in mice(Figure 1),whereas human NMJs have a smaller,fragmented structure throughout *** NMJs exhibit smaller or fragmented endplates,partial denervation,reduced numbers of synaptic vesicles,abnormal presynaptic mitochondria,and dysfunctional perisynaptic Schwann cells(Alhindi et al.,2022).

Recovery of rare-earth metal neodymium from aqueous solutions by poly-γ-glutamic acid and its sodium salt as biosorbents:Effects of solution pH on neodymium recovery mechanisms

For recovery of metals from low-concentration sources, biosorption is one of promising technologies and poly-γ-glutamic acid（γ-PGA） has been known as a potential biosorbent for recovery of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Effects of solution pH on recovery of rare-earth metal Nd are systematically examined to clarify mechanisms of Nd recovery by y-PGA and its sodium salt（y-PGANa）. The recovery efficiency of Nd by y-PGA increases from 2.4 to 19.6% as pH increases from 2 to 4. Subsequently the Nd recovery efficiencies for y-PGA and y-PGANa remain almost constant in the range of pH from 4 to 7. For pH 〉 7 the increase in Nd recovery is significant and 100% recovery of Nd is achieved at pH 9. The pH dependency on Nd recovery by y-PGANa is similar to that by y-PGA. Contributions of adsorption and precipitation/coagulation to Nd recovery process are quantified. Whereas the adsorption dominates Nd recovery at lower pH（〈～4）, the precipitation/coagulation controls Nd recovery process for pH 〉 7. At higher pH, purple gel precipitates are observed. The maximum adsorption capacities for γ-PGA and yPGANa are 215 mg-Nd/（g-γ-PGA） at pH 4 and 305 mg-Nd/（g-y-PGANa） at pH 3, respectively. From the spectra of FT-IR and XPS, the biosorption of Nd onto y-PGA and y-PGANa via electrostatic interaction with carboxylate anions at pH 3 is verified. The Nd complexation with amide and carboxylate anion groups on γ-PGA and γ-PGANa may also contribute to the Nd recovery. The biosorption isotherms for Nd recovery by γ-PGA and γ-PGANa can be satisfactorily fitted by the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic studies suggest that the biosorptions of Nd by γ-PGA and γ-PGANa are endothermic. The utilization of γ-PGA and γ-PGANa as potential and eco-friendly biosorbents for the highly effective recovery of Nd from aqueous solution is confirmed.

Estimating camera parameters from starry night photographs

We propose an efficient, specific method for estimating camera parameters from a single starry night image. Such an image consists of a collection of disks representing stars, so traditional estimation methods for common pictures do not work. Our method uses a database, a star catalog, that stores the positions of stars on the celestial sphere. Our method computes magnitudes(i.e., brightnesses) of stars in the input image and uses them to find the corresponding stars in the star catalog. Camera parameters can then be estimated by a simple geometric calculation. Our method is over ten times faster and more accurate than a previous method.

Experimental study on boundary lubricity of superficial area of articular cartilage and synovial fluid

The boundary lubrication mechanism at the articulating surface of natural synovial joints has been the subject of much discussion in *** this study,to elucidate the lubricating function of the superficial area of articular cartilage and synovial fluid(SF),cartilage specimens were processed with four different treatments:gentle and severe washing with detergent,incubation in NaCl solution,and trypsin digestion to selectively remove certain constituents from the cartilage ***,the frictional characteristics were examined in phosphate-buffered saline(PBS)and SF against *** reciprocating sliding tests with a spherical glass probe and square articular cartilage specimens were performed at low contact loads in the mN range to extract the frictional behavior in the superficial area of the cartilage ***,the cartilage surface was observed to confirm the effects of treatments on the morphology of the cartilage surface using a fluorescence microscope and water-immersion *** coefficient of friction(COF)of the prepared cartilage specimens was varied from 0.05 to over 0.3 in ***,a certain group of cartilage specimens exhibited a low COF of less than 0.1 with limited *** the low COF group of specimens,all four treatments increased the COF in PBS to different extents,and fluorescence microscopy revealed that the integrity of the cartilage surface was deteriorated by *** means that the intact cartilage surface had lubricating constituents to maintain low friction,and the removal of such constituents resulted in the loss of the intrinsic boundary lubricity of the cartilage *** variation in the COF of the cartilage specimens was suppressed in SF because it had a clear boundary lubrication effect on the cartilage *** lubricating effect of SF could be confirmed even after degenerative treatment.

An Electronic Approach to Materials Design

A molecular orbital approach to materials design has recently made great progress. This approach is based onthe electronic structure calculations by the DV-Xα cluster method. In this paper recent progress in this approachis reviewed. In particular, it is stressed that New PHACOMP approach is useful for predicting the formation oftopologically close-packed (TCP) phases (e.g., σ phase andμ phase ) in nickel based superalloys. Compared to thecurrent PHACOMP, New PHACOMP provides a better tool for designing those alloys which are free from such TCPprecipitates at service temperatures. In addition, the d-electrons concept is shown for alloy design and development.
