Semisolid casting with ultrasonically melt-treated billets of Al-7mass%Si alloys

The demand for high performance cast aluminum alloy components is often disturbed by increasing impurity elements,such as iron accumulated from recycled *** is strongly required that coarse plate-like iron compound of β-Al5FeSi turns into harmless form without the need for applying refining additives or expensive virgin *** microstructural modification of Al-7mass%Si alloy billets with different iron contents was examined by applying ultrasonic vibration during the *** melt-treated billets were thixocast right after induction heating up to the semisolid temperature of 583 oC,the microstructure and tensile properties were evaluated in the thixocast *** primary α-Al is required to fill up a thin cavity in thixocasting,so that the microstructural modification by ultrasonic melt-treatment was firstly confirmed in the *** ultrasonic melt-treatment in the temperature range of 630 oC to 605 oC,the primary α-Al transforms itself from dendrite into fine globular in *** coarse plate-like β-Al5FeSi compound becomes markedly finer compared with those in non-treated *** soaking up to 583 oC,does not appreciably affect the size of β-Al5FeSi compounds;however,it affects the solid primary α-Al morphology to be more globular,which is convenient for *** thixocasting with preheated billets,eutectic silicon plates are extremely refined due to the rapid solidification arising from low casting *** tensile strength of thixocast samples with different iron contents does not change much even at 2mass% of iron,when thixocast with ultrasonically melt-treated ***,thixocast Al-7mass%Si-2mass%Fe alloy with non-treated billets exhibits an inferior strength of 80MPa,compared with 180MPa with ultrasonically melt-treated *** elongation is also improved by about a factor of two in thixocastings with ultrasonically melt-treated billets for all iron contents of Al-7mas

Comparison of luminescent properties of helicene-like bibenzothiophenes with o-carborane and 5,6-dicarba-nidodecaborane

This article describes comparison of the anchoring effect on electronic properties of the helicene-like bibenzothiophene between o-carborane and 5,6-dicarba-nido-decaborane. The o-carborane and nido-decaborane-fused bibenzothiophenes were simultaneously obtained in the same reaction and successfully isolated. Initially, the X-ray single crystal analysis revealed that the helicene-like distorted structure was realized in the nido-decaborane-fused bibenzothiophene. From optical measurements in the solution state, distinct different characteristics depending on the type of anchors were observed. It was summarized that the absorption and luminescent properties originated from weak π-conjugation at the bibenzothiophene moiety in the o-carboranefused compound were obtained, whereas robust π-conjugation and significant emission from the intramolecular charge transfer state were detected from the nido-decaborane-fused compound. These data can be explained by the theoretical results that π-conjugation was restrictedly developed within the bibenzothiophene moiety in frontier orbitals of the o-carborane-fused compound. In contrast, π-conjugation can be constructed even through the distorted bibenzothiophene because of the nido-decaborane unit. Moreover, the intramolecular charge transfer state should be realized because of electronic interaction involving the nido-decaborane unit in the excited state. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the nido-decaborane-fused compound possessed solid-state emission and mechanochromic luminescent properties. The π-conjugation on the distorted structure supported by the nido-decaborane anchor should play a significant role in suppressing aggregation-caused quenching followed by presenting solid-state emission with stimuli responsiveness.

Geochemical and Grain-Sized Implications for Provenance Variations of the Central Yellow Sea Muddy Area Since the Middle Holocene

Based on high-resolution analysis to a 280-cm long sediment core obtained from the muddy area in the central Yellow Sea, we examined the provenance of muddy sediments and discussed the changing marine sedimentary environment since the middle Holocene. The results indicated that fine-grained sediments in the muddy area were mainly derived from the Huanghe(Yellow River) and Changjiang(Yangtze River) with considerable stepwise variations during the past 6.6 kyr. The Yellow Sea Warm Current was initiated at 6 kyr when the sea level was high together with the enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon. These in combination established the framework of shelf circulation in the Yellow Sea that began to trap the river-derived fine-grained sediments. From 4.9 kyr to 2.8 kyr, both the Kushiro Current and East Asian Monsoon were significantly weakened, reducing the delivery of Changjiang sediments to the muddy area. As a result, the sediments were mainly originated from the Huanghe. From 2.8 kyr to 1.5 kyr the continuously weakened East Asian Winter Monsoon and enhanced Yellow Sea Warm Current entrapped more fine-grain sediments. Whereas the enhanced East Asian Winter Monsoon and the human caused increase in sediment load of the Huanghe since 1.5 kyr, and direct delivery of Huanghe sediments to the Yellow Sea during 1128–1855 AD might dominated the sedimentation in the study area. The stepwise variations of the sediment provenance and composition of the Central Yellow Sea muddy sediments are of importance to understanding the formation of muddy deposit in the central Yellow Sea and the associated variations of marine environment since the middle Holocene.

A Case with XXXX Syndrome Who Was Incidentally Diagnosed during Examination for Suspected Post-Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Syndrome

A 19-year-old Japanese woman was referred to us with the complaints of arthralgia and meralgia following human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. She received HPV vaccination at the age of 15 years and three years later, she developed intermittent arthralgia, meralgia, and numbness in limbs. There were no orthostatic dysregulation symptoms. She had hypertelorism, and brachydactyly in both the hands, and revealed mild cubitus varus deformity with lateral instability. X-ray examination disclosed hypoplasia of the humeral capitellum and trochlea in elbow joints. G-banded chromosomes were shown to be composed of 48, XXXX. She was, therefore, diagnosed with XXXX syndrome, which explained the reason for her limb symptoms. Although some girls with HPV vaccination complain of various symptoms including limb pain and numbness, exact underlying cause of these symptoms needs to be ascertained carefully for reaching a final diagnosis.

Efects of amine, amine salt and amide on the behaviour of carbon dioxide absorption into calcium hydroxide suspension to precipitate calcium carbonate

The amount of carbon dioxide （CO2） absorption and calcium ion （Ca^2＋） concentration besides the pH of aqueous solution were observed during the COz absorption to precipitate calcium carbonate （CaCO3） from calcium hydroxide （Ca（OH）2）. A reaction rate-limiting effect of an amount of CO2 absorption without any organic additives in the early stage of the precipitation was observed, which was attributed to an interruption effect of bicarbonate ion （HCO3） on the precipitation of CaCO3. The improvement for the reaction rate was achieved not only by amine additives but also by neutral additives such as ε-caprolactam or amine salt. When the hexamethylene diamine was dissolved in the solution, successive change of crystal forms of CaCO3 aragonite to calcite in aqueous suspensions, confirmed by Ca^2＋ concentration change and X-ray diffraction, was concluded that a local environment around the amine group in aqueous solution and an interaction of the diamine with precipitated CaCO3 particles were important factors for these reactions.

Induction of Sirtuin1 Activity in SH-SY5Y Cells by Cyanidin-3-O-Glucocide Induced

An increase in oxidative stress plays a key role in neurotoxicity induction and cell death, which leads to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is a common anthocyanin and shows antioxidant activity in neuronal cells. Silent information regulator 2-related protein 1 (Sirt1) regulates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effects of C3G on Sirt1 in neuronal cells remain unclear. This study evaluated the effect of C3G on Sirt1 expression and activity in human neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells. In the study, C3G increased the expression of Sirt1 and Sirt1 activity in SH-SY5Y cells. Additionally, C3G increased the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, a vital transcription factor for regulating the expression of antioxidant genes, as well as antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Moreover, C3G protected SH-SY5Y cells from oxidative stress. These results suggest that C3G decreased oxidative stress-induced cell injury by increasing the expression of Sirt1 and other antioxidant factors. Therefore, C3G might merit further investigation for use in attenuating the progress of neurodegenerative diseases.

Dear Editor,DECREASE IN DNA METHYLATION1 （DDM1） is a chromatin remodeling protein required for maintenance of cytosine and histone H3K9 methylation in heterochromatin regions in the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana （Gendrel et al., 2002）. A ddm 1 mutant also increases the rate of meiotic recombination in euchromatic but not heterochromatic regions of A. thaliana （Melamed-Bessudo and Levy, 2012）, and changes the state of cytosine methylation of a gene flanked by a LINE element located in a region of euchromatin （Saze and Kakutani, 2007）. These studies indicate that the function of DDM1 is not limited to heterochromatin regions and show that it also acts on euchromatic regions in the genome, although the mechanism determining its target specificity remains obscure. Toward understanding the function of DDM1 in the maintenance of global epigenetic state of the genome in higher plants, we performed a genome-wide analysis of cytosine methylation in an antisense-mediated DDMl-knockdown rice line （asDDM1） that exhibits similar characteristics to that of ddml in A. thaliana （Higo et al., 2012; Habu et al., 2015）. Some intrinsic properties of rice genome differ greatly from those of A. thaliana, for example, the content of repeated sequences and their distribution, and therefore rice provides an opportunity to examine the effect of DDM1 deficiency on genomes with a higher content and broader distribution of repeats.

Improvement in mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu alloys through sonosolidified slurry

For the wider applications,it is necessary to improve the ductility as well as the strength and wear-resistance of hypereutectic AlSi-Cu alloys,which are typical light-weight wear-resistant *** increase in the amounts of primary silicon particles causes the modified wear-resistance of hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu alloys,but leads to the poor strength and *** is known that dual phase steels composed of hetero-structure have succeeded in bringing contradictory mechanical properties of high strength and ductility *** order to apply the idea of hetero-structure to hypereutectic Al-Si-Cu alloys for the achievement of high strength and ductility along with wear resistance,ultrasonic irradiation of the molten metal during the solidification,which is called sono-solidification,was carried out from its molten state to just above the eutectic *** sono-solidified Al-17Si-4Cu alloy is composed of hetero-structure,which are,hard primary silicon particles,soft non-equilibrium a-Al phase and the eutectic ***-casting was performed at just above the eutectic temperature with sono-solidified slurry to shape a disk *** the rheo-casting with modified sonosolidified slurry held for 45 s at 570 oC,the quantitative optical microscope observation exhibits that the microstructure is composed of 18area%of hard primary silicon particles and 57area%of soft a-Al *** contrast,there exist only 5 area%of primary silicon particles and no a-Al phase in rheo-cast specimen with normally solidified *** the tensile tests of T6 treated rheo-cast specimens with modified sono-solidified slurry exhibit improved strength and 5%of elongation,regardless of having more than 3 times higher amounts of primary silicon particles compared to that of rheo-cast specimen with normally solidified slurry.

Effect of polyvinyl butyrate nanoparticles incorporated with immune suppressing vitamins on alteration of population of intestinal immune cells

The nanoparticles(NPs) from polyvinyl butyrate(PVBu) which can work as an orally applicable donor of butyrate for intestine were prepared. Immunotolerance inducing molecules such as vitamin D3and all-trans retinoic acid(ATRA) were incorporated into PVBu NPs. The alteration in populations and numbers of DC103+dendritic cells(DC) and regulatory T(Treg) cells in intestinal immune tissues were examined after oral administration of NPs. It was found that NPs reduced the population of CD103+DC and Treg cells in Peyer’s patched in lower part of the intestine and inversely increased the population of CD103+DC in mesenteric lymph node(MLN), while the population of Treg cells in MLN was unchanged. These observations indicate that NPs may enhance the immunotolerance at MLN and lamina propria toward luminal antigens, indicating the promising features of PVBu NPs as therapeutics of allergy and autoimmune diseases.
