Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Isobutane to Isobutene on FSM-16 Doped with Cr and Related Catalysts

The oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutane to isobutene was examined for the use in the preparation of FSM-16 and related compounds doped by chromium with expectations that a yield of isobutene of greater than 8% could be achieved. The activity depended on the molding procedure of the catalyst and the doping method of the chromium species. In the present study, 8.8% and 8.3% of the yield of isobutene were obtained at 0.75 h and 6 h on-stream for the catalyst （Cr-loading; 6.2 wt.%） molded using wet treatment hut not pressurization treatment, in which the chromium species were directly added into the aqueous solution containing raw FSM-16 （hydrated sodium silicate powder） at an initial stage of the catalyst preparation. The structure information was based on XRD （X-ray diffraction）, the specific surface area was determined using a conventional BET （Brunauer-Emmett-Teller） nitrogen adsorption and the loading of chromium was estimated using ICP （inductively coupled plasma）. All those parameters combined with the molding method indicated that the catalytic activity was more influenced by the loading of chromium into bulk but not on surface of the catalyst rather than by the hexagonal structure of FSM-16 and the surface area.

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Hemodialysis Patients

Background: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common cardiovascular complication and an independent risk factor for cardiovascular death in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Previous studies have shown that fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which has an important role in phosphate metabolism, is elevated in HD patients. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the association of FGF23 and LVH and the prognostic value of serum FGF23 level in HD patients. One hundred seven HD patients were evaluated for LVH by echocardiography. Serum FGF23 levels were measured using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: Patients with LVH were more likely to have higher systolic blood pressure (BP) and LVH was significantly associated with female gender and higher serum levels of phosphate and calcium ×phosphate products. LVH was also associated with higher serum FGF23 level. Multivariate analysis indicated that serum FGF23 level, systolic BP, and serum phosphate level remained correlated with LVH. This suggested that serum FGF23 level is independently associated with LVH in our HD patients. Cox analysis indicated no significant difference in risk of death for patients with elevated serum FGF23 level. Conclusion: LVH has a high prevalence in HD patients, and FGF23 is independently associated with LVH but is not a predictor for prognosis during a 4-year follow-up period.

Robotic hepatectomy remains controversial to date,despite continuous advances in the technology and more surgeons gaining experience with the *** et al.(1)recently published an interesting article in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Nutrition,titled"Selecting incision-dominant cases for robotic liver resection:towards outpatient hepatectomy with rapid recovery."The authors evaluated 97 cases of robotically-assisted liver resection(RLR)arguing that it is difficult to reach the superior-posterior liver segments with the straight instruments used in conventional laparoscopic liver resection(LLR).The articulated instruments of the surgical robot are better suited for hepatectomies in these difficult-to-reach areas of the *** concluded that cases where the incision of an open approach would be large and affect recovery results in the highest likelihood of patients benefitting from a robotic *** think that the authors present an interesting perspective by focusing on the strong points of RLR compared to LLR.

A novel phenolic rigid organic filler(KT)was melt-mixed with an isotactic polypropylene(iPP)to prepare a series of PP/KT composites,with or without maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene(MAPP)as *** evolution of filler morphology during melt-mixing and melt-pressure processes was monitored by scanning electron microscope(SEM)and polarized optical microscope(POM).The influences of shear force,pressure time,filler content and MAPP concentration on the final filler dispersion were *** found that this rigid organic filler readily melted and dispersed homogenously into the iPP matrix through a fission-fusion process during the melt-mixing *** a balanced dispersion,which was closely related to shear force and MAPP concentration,can be *** the meltpressure process,parts of the filler particles combined gradually through a coalescence ***,the incorporation of MAPP can effectively inhibit the tendency to coalesce and refine the filler particles sizes into ***,a series of PP/KT composites with controllable filler particles size and narrow size distribution can be obtained just by adjusting process conditions and MAPP *** addition,due to the in-situ formation mechanism,the filler phase possessed a typical solid true-spherical shape.

AM: To establish and characterize a new cholangiocarcinoma cell line from a patient living in the Opisthorchis viverrini (O. viverrini) endemic area of Northeast Thailand. METHODS: Fresh liver biopsy and bile specimens were obtained from a 65-year-old Thai woman with cholangiocarcinoma of the ports hepatis. After digestion, the cells were cultured in Ham's F12 media. The established cell line was then characterized for growth kinetics, cell morphology, imm-unocytochemistry and cytogenetics. Tumorigenicity of the cell line was determined by heterotransplanting in nude mice. RESULTS: The primary tumor was a poorly differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma. Examination of the bile revealed malignant cells with O. viverrin eggs. The cholangiocarcinoma cell line KKU-100 was established 4 mo after the primary culture-population doubling time was 72 h. KKU-100 possesses compact and polygonal-shaped epithelial cells. Immunocytochemically, this cell line exhibited cytokeratin, EMA, CEA, and CA125, but not a-fetoprotein (AFP), CA19-9, desmin, c-met, or p53. Such protein expressions parallel those of the primary tumor. Cytogenetic analysis identified aneuploidy karyotypes with a modal chromosome number of 78 and marked chromosomal structural changes. Inoculation of KKU-100 cells into nude mice produced a transplantable, poorly differentiated aden-ocarcinoma, similar to the original tumor. CONCLUSION: KKU-100 is the first egg-proven, Opisthorchis- associated cholangiocarcinoma cell line, which should prove useful for further investigations of the tumor biology of this cancer.

Learning Dynamics of the Complex-Valued Neural Network in the Neighborhood of Singular Points

In this paper, the singularity and its effect on learning dynamics in the complex-valued neural network are elucidated. It has learned that the linear combination structure in the updating rule of the complex-valued neural network increases the speed of moving away from the singular points, and the complex-valued neural network cannot be easily influenced by the singular points, whereas the learning of the usual real-valued neural network can be attracted in the neighborhood of singular points, which causes a standstill in learning. Simulation results on the learning dynamics of the three-layered real-valued and complex-valued neural networks in the neighborhood of singularities support the analytical results.

Impact of Vitamin D Metabolism on Cardiovascular Disease

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that enables optimal absorption of calcium from the intestine for bone mineralization. Vitamin D receptor is present in many organs, and there has been of interest in potential functions of vitamin D, particularly in cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D deficiency is thought to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The mechanism by which vitamin D might improve the outcome of cardiovascular disease outcomes remains unclear. However, potential hypotheses have been proposed, including that vitamin D improves the outcome by down-regulating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and by direct effects on the heart and vasculature. The estimated worldwide prevalence of vitamin D deficiency of 50% in elderly populations underlines the importance of vitamin D deficiency as a public health issue. The elderly persons have high rates of comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease. This article reviews changes in vitamin D level with age, the impact of vitamin D deficiency on agerelated cardiovascular disease, and different treatment options available for vitamin D deficiency in older populations.

Comparison between the eruptive X2.2 flare on 2011 February15 and confined X3.1 flare on 2014 October 24

We compare two contrasting X-class flares in terms of magnetic free energy, relative magnetic helicity and decay index of the active regions （ARs） in which they occurred. The events in question are the eruptive X2.2 flare from AR 11158 accompanied by a halo coronal mass ejection （CME） and the confined X3.1 flare from AR 12192 with no associated CME. These two flares exhibit similar behavior of free magnetic energy and helicity buildup for a few days preceding them. A major difference between the two flares is found to lie in the time-dependent change of magnetic helicity of the ARs that hosted them. AR 11158 shows a significant decrease in magnetic helicity starting -4 hours prior to the flare, but no apparent decrease in helicity is observed in AR 12192. By examining the magnetic helicity injection rates in terms of sign, we confirmed that the drastic decrease in magnetic helicity before the eruptive X2.2 flare was not caused by the injection of reversed helicity through the photosphere but rather the CME-related change in the coronal magnetic field. Another major difference we find is that AR 11158 had a significantly larger decay index and therefore weaker overlying field than AR 12192. These results suggest that the coronal magnetic helicity and the decay index of the overlying field can provide a clue about the occurrence of CMEs.
