The Rishiri Fall Experiment (RISFEX ) campaign was performed in September 2003 at Rishiri island (45.07 N,141.12 E,and 35 m asl) in the sea of Japan to investigate photochemical production of ozone in the marine boundary layer. Total peroxy radicals ROx (HO2 + RO2) and NOx (NO + NO2) were measured together with other chemical species and physical parameters relevant to ozone production. The ozone production rate (P(O3)) was estimated from measured peroxy radicals and was found to be highly variable between days,with 30-min averaged midday values varying from 0.2 to 1.7 ppbv/h (ppbv refers to part per billion by volume). The daytime mean P(O3) for the air masses from relatively clean NE sector is close to zero,but significantly higher for air masses from more polluted W and SE sector,suggesting the impact of transport of pollutants on the remote local ozone production. The experimentally determined P(O3) is compared with those derived from a time-dependent box model based on Regional Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling (RACM),and both the methods give the results generally in agreement. The model calculation shows that HO2 + NO reaction contributes most to ozone production,ca. 60% at midday,followed by the reactions of CH3O2 and ISOP (peroxy radicals formed from isoprene) with NO which account for ca. 13% and 10% to ozone production,respectively,at noon. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the ozone production during the measurement period is within NOx-limited regime.

Heat-killed Bifidobacterium longum CLA8013 has been demonstrated to improve the frequency of defecation, straining, and pain during defecation in human placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group studies. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study to evaluate the safety of both long-term and excessive intakes of heat-killed B. longum CLA8013, when used as a food with functional claims. In both tests, 30 healthy volunteers were divided into two groups: an active group that ingested heat-killed B. longum CLA8013 and a placebo group. In the long-term intake safety study, participants in the active group ingested 25 billion cells/day for 12 weeks. In the excessive intake safety study, participants in the active group ingested 125 billion cells/day for 4 weeks. Physical, hematological, biochemical, and urine examinations were conducted, and adverse events were evaluated in both studies. The studies revealed no abnormalities in any of the safety tests. In conclusion, no safety-related issues were identified with long-term or excessive intake of heat-killed B. longum CLA8013.

Quantum geometric tensor, including a symmetric real part defined as quantum metric and an antisymmetric part defined as Berry curvature, is essential for understanding many phenomena. In this study, we investigated the photogalvanic efect of semiconductors with time-reversal-invariant and spatial inversion symmetries using the quantum kinetic equation. We concluded that the integral of the symmetric(antisymmetric) part of quantum geometric tensor on the equal energy surface in momentum space, satisfying the resonance condition, is related to the generation rate of carriers in semiconductors under linearly(circularly) polarized light. Under additional bias voltage, the dc photocurrent is proportional to the bias voltage. Our study provided an alternative interpretation for the photogalvanic efect in the view of quantum geometric tensor. Additionally, it classified the intrinsic diference between linearly and circularly polarized optical fields.

Effect of forest thinning on hydrologic nitrate exports from a Nsaturated plantation

Although several studies have assessed the effects of thinning on water quality,including nitrogen(N)exports,few have examined N-saturated *** study assessed the short-term effect of thinning on N exports from a N-saturated plantation forest in northern Kyushu,western Japan,that was thinned(43%of basal area)during January-March *** levels at the gauging station were continually measured,and streamwater baseflow and stormflow samples were collected before(2011)and after(2013)forest *** precipitation before(2469 mm)and after(2418 mm)forest thinning differed little,and annual water discharge after thinning(1641 mm)was similar to that before thinning(1609 mm).However,direct flow during stormflow periods was higher after thinning(260 mm)than before(153 mm).The concentrations of major ions in stream water did not differ before and after *** a result,the high annual dissolved inorganic N(DIN)exports differed little before(35.8 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)and after(36.5 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)forest *** exports during stormflow periods were slightly higher after(12.2 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)than before thinning(10.5 kg N ha^-1 a^-1)and were proportional to the increased direct flow after thinning(561 mm after vs.470 mm before thinning).We concluded that thinning does not affect annual N exports from the N-saturated plantation forest,but it can increase the proportion of N exported during stormflow periods in proportion to increased water volume of direct flow after thinning.

In last decades,topological materials[1-3]have attracted lots of research *** Kondo insulator(TKI)[4],as an exotic quantum state,has been proposed theoretically in two hexaborides Sm B6and Yb B6,in which there is a d/f(p)band inversion at momentum point X[5].There are lots of experimental work supporting the TKI state and metallic surface state in typical Kondo insulator Sm B6[6-10].However,more and more experimental results demonstrated that Yb B6is trivial insulator at ambient pressure[11].Under high pressure,the band gap of Yb B6will close and the d/p band inversion can happen under pressure about 15 GPa[12].

The effects of sulfur compound PTMP and metal naphthenates on the conversion of the atmospheric residue to light oil and on the coke formation were investigated by carrying out thermal decomposition in a tubular type reactor. When 100 μg/g of PTMP was added to residue, gas oil yield increased, but the effect was not significant. However, the coke deposition in the reactor was reduced by the addition of PTMP. When 100 μg/g of ferric naphthenate was added, the significant effect was observed on the gas oil increase. However, the coke deposition was enhanced with the increase of gas oil yield by the addition of ferric naphthenate. Both of the increase in gas oil yield and the reduction of coke formation were observed when PTMP (1000 μg/g) and ferric naphthenate (100 μg/g) were simultaneously used. By the addition of the organic sulfur compound, the formation of the coke produced by the recombination of hydrocarbon redicals yielded by thermal decomposition was suppressed. The advantage of this method is that the construction of new equipment is not required and it enables the increase in the light oil fraction of residual oil by using the existing units.
