We assessed the adaptiveness of refraining from infanticidal probing at the third attack under triple parasitism in the parasitoid Echthrodelphaxfairchildii Perkins, by comparing fitness returns from the third attack with and without probing. Fitness returns were assessed in terms of the survival rate, mean developmental time, and mean adult head width of the progenies. Not probing was maladaptive under triple parasitism with oviposition intervals of 1/24 and 24/24 hours （where the numbers before and after the slash refer to the first-to-second and second-to-third oviposition intervals, respectively）, although no significant difference was detected in fitness returns for oviposition intervals of 24/1 hours. We suggest that the cost of probing （especially the decrease in the chance of future ovipositions） is a reason for the seemingly maladaptive absence of probing.

A novel method combining dual wavelength fluorescent ratiometry with scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is proposed and developed to measure the concentration and distribution of protons in the vicinity of biological samples. This method involves immersing mitochondria in a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye solution instead of injecting the dye into the surface of the mitochondrial membrane. It uses a dual emission pH-sensitive dye and SNOM with a thermally pulled and metal-coated optical fiber probe to improve the spatial resolution. The time dependence of the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) under acid addition and the response of mitochondria to nutritional supplementation were studied by using this method. Activation of mitochondria and a distance-dependent delay in the FIR response were observed. The results confirmed that mitochondrial activity could be observed by using this method.

Development of a Mobile Sensing Unit and Its Prototype Implementation

This paper represents a design and development of a mobile sensing unit as well as its prototype implementation for railway track monitoring. The unit consists of an ultra-small personal computer (PC), a global positioning system (GPS) receiver, an accelerometer and an ADC (Analog/Digital Converter) so that the unit can trace the route while capturing an acceleration response of a passenger vehicle. The unit enables more frequent and qualitative data acquisition compared with traditional and the state of the practice railway track inspection equipments. Locating disorder is the key of our unit, which has a reasonable accuracy of positioning with GPS data, existing facilities landmarks, and car acceleration responses. The proposed unit is a promising device for efficient properties management of railway agencies. The prototype implementation shows a result that car acceleration responses are related with the track displacements in low frequencies. The results also imply that sensor settlement on a vehicle floor, not axes or bogies, is effective for capturing track vertical displacements.

Laser-in duced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS),firstly proposed in 1962 as Brech and Cross[I]successfully detected the plasma emission induced by a ruby laser,has attracted more and more attention in both academia and industry due to its unique analytical features such as little or no sample preparation,simultaneous multi-elemental analysis,and remote sensing etc[2-4].Restrained from the highcost and poor reliability of instruments back then,the research popularity of LIBS declined quickly after a few years of initial mania of LIBS *** the 1990s,benefiting from the significant development of the hardware setups including laser,spectrometer,and ICCD,the'LIBS fever,re-emerged with continuous progress achieved in various applications as well as fundamental studies for the past two *** 2004,James D Winefordner,a prestigious an alytical scientist,crowned LIBS as a'future superstar5 for chemical analysis[5],marking the great potential of ***,on the way of fully commercialization and industrialization,LIBS is facing three big challenges:(1)to improve the quantitative analysis performance,particularly the repeatability and reproducibility performance;(2)to reduce the instrumental cost;(3)to improve the long-term stability and robustness for industrial *** finally transform LIBS from'future superstar,to'superstar5,joint effort of worldwide LIBS community is needed[6].

BACKGROUND Interleukin-17(IL-17)inhibitors are known to cause exacerbation or new onset of inflammatory bowel disease upon ***,few reports have described characteristic endoscopic and histopathologic findings,and no small intestinal lesions have been reported so *** SUMMARY A woman in her 60s with psoriasis was administered ixekizumab(IXE),an anti-IL-17A antibody,for the treatment of *** months after commencing treatment,the patient visited our hospital because of persistent *** tests performed at the time of the visit revealed severe inflammation,and colonoscopy revealed multiple round ulcers throughout the colon.A tissue biopsy of the ulcer revealed infiltration of inflammatory cells and granuloma-like findings in the submucosal *** endoscopy revealed multiple jejunal *** the withdrawal of IXE,the symptoms gradually improved,and ulcer reduction and scarring of the colon were endoscopically *** To the best of our knowledge,17 reports have documented IL-17 inhibitorinduced entero-colitis with endoscopic images,endoscopic findings,and pathological characteristics,including the present *** of these cases showed diffuse loss of vascular pattern,coarse mucosa/ulcer formation in the left colon,and endoscopic findings similar to those of ulcerative *** the remaining eight cases,discontinuous erosions and ulcerations from the terminal ileum to the rectum were seen,with endoscopic findings similar to those of Crohn’s *** this case,the findings were confirmed by capsule endoscopy,which has not been previously reported.

This review aimed to highlight the etiology,diagnosis,treatment,and prevention of obstructive and secretory complications associated with diverting ileostomy(DI).Obstructive complications at the stoma site are termed stoma outlet obstruction(SOO)or stoma-related obstruction(SRO).The incidence of SOO/SRO is 5.4%-27.3%,and the risk factors are multifactorial;however,the configuration of the stoma limb and the thickness of the rectus abdominis muscle(RAM)may be of particular ***-stomal tube decompression is initially attempted with a success rate of 33%-86%.A thick RAM may carry the risk of *** refinement,including a wider incision of the anterior sheath and adequate stoma limb length,avoids tension and immobility and may decrease SOO/*** complications of DI are termed high output stoma(HOS).Persistent HOS lead to water and sodium depletion,and secondary hyperaldosteronism,resulting in electrolyte imbalances,such as *** incidence of HOS is 14%-24%,with an output of 1000-2000 mL/d lasting up to three *** of HOS is commenced after excluding postoperative complications or enteritis and includes fluid intake restriction,antimotility and antisecretory drug therapies,and magnesium *** monitoring and surveillance programs have been successful in decreasing readmissions for dehydration.

We present a case of a healthy 72-year-old man with herpes simplex hepatitis (HSVH) development soon after ordinary surgery for biliary stones. A sudden onset of hepatitis associated with high fever and leukopenia emerged on postoperative day 5, followed by a rapid and lethal course (died on day 9), despite an acyclovir therapy on day 8. Postmortem liver biopsy revealed positive immunostaining for herpes simplex virus(HSV) type-1. The serum tests(available after the death) were negative for anti-HSV immunogloblulins, but positive for HSV DNA. A review of 15 cases of postsurgical HSVH along with 42 cases of non-surgical HSH showed that (1): A wide spectrum of surgical procedures was involved; and (2): High mortality (87%) associated with lower rates of ante-mortem diagnosis (20%) and acyclovir treatment (20%). Due to the difficulty in diagnosis and lethal nature, an early clinical suspension and prompt empirical anti-viral intervention are imperative for postsurgical hepatitis with undetermined etiology, characterized by fever and leucopenia.
