Transfer of electrons on scratched iron surfaces:Photoelectron emission and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies

We report the activation energy, ΔEa, for the quantum yield in thermally assisted photoelectron emission(TAPE) under 210-nm-wavelength light irradiation, and the associated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) results. Samples were cleaned only in acetone and scratched in air, water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, benzene, and cyclohexane. Glow curves, describing the temperature dependence of photoelectron emission(PE) quantum yield(emitted electrons/photon), Y, were obtained. A simple method of determining ΔEa using Y, called YGC, at seven temperatures up to 353 °C, for the same Y glow curve, was proposed. The ΔEa obtained using this method was almost the same as that obtained from Y for seven stationary temperatures(YST). For scratched samples, the TAPE was measured over two cycles of temperature increase and subsequent decrease(Up1, Down1 and Up2, Down2 scans) in the 25–339 °C range, and ΔE_a was obtained from YGC. The Arrhenius plot was approximated by a straight line, although a convex swelling peak appeared in the Up1 scan. ΔE_(aUp1) was in the 0.212–0.035 eV range, depending on the environment in which scratching was performed; ΔE_(aUp1) for water was much higher than that for acetone. This was explained in terms of the mode of the acid–base interaction between the liquid molecules and the hydroxyl group of Fe–OH. The values of ΔE_(aDown1), ΔEa Up2, and ΔE_(aDown2) were in the 0.038–0.012 eV range. The total count of electrons emitted during the Up1 and Up2 scans was found to decrease with increasing ΔE_(aUp1) and ΔE_(aUp2), respectively. ΔE_(aUp2) was found to increase with increasing presence of the FeO component in the analyzed Fe oxides. The convex swelling peak was attributed to the removal of carbon materials from the scratched surface and the effect of the increased electron density of the surface hydroxyl group of FeOH under the light irradiation.

AIM: To examine the effects of Kampo medicine, Keishi-ka-Shakuyaku-to (TJ-60) on the signal transduction in diabetic gastrointestinal dysfunction. METHODS: Experimental diabetic models were prepared using streptozotocin (STZ)-treated Wistar rats. Randomly selected STZ rats were treated with insulin (12 U·kg-1·d-1) or TJ-60 (1% of food intake). Diacylglycerol (DG) and DG kinase activities were quantified in isolated aortic smooth muscle tissue. RESULTS: One of the key element of the Pi-turnover, DG kinase activity in resting state in gastric smooth muscle was significantly increased compared to the control value, and carbachol (CCh)-induced response was not detectable, but it was detected in the control rats. On the other hand resting activity in ileum did not differ from the control, but the CCh-induced responses were suppressed. Eleven-year Experience with Radial Keratotomy

Deoxynortryptoquivaline:A unique antiprostate cancer agent

The androgen receptor (AR) is a critical target in all the clinical stages of prostate cancer. To identify a new ARinhibitor, we constructed a new screening system using the androgen-dependent growth of prostate cancer cell lines as ascreening indicator. We screened 50,000 culture broths of microorganisms using this screening system and found that thefermentation broth produced by a fungus inhibited androgen-dependent growth of human prostate cancer LNCaP cellswithout cytotoxicity. Purification of this culture medium was performed, and this resulted in deoxynortryptoquivaline(DNT) being identified as a novel inhibitor of AR function. DNT showed potent inhibition of androgen-dependentgrowth of human prostate cancer LNCaP cells. The AR competitor assay was performed, and DNT did not act as anAR antagonist. However, DNT inhibited AR-dependent transcriptional activity and AR nuclear translocation, itsuggested that the suppression of AR function leads to inhibition activity against androgen-dependent growth.

Benign esophageal stricture after thermal injury treated with esophagectomy and ileocolon interposition

Thermal injuries of the esophagus are rare causes of benign esophageal stricture, and all published cases were successfully treated with conservative management. A 28-year-old Japanese man with a thermal esophageal injury caused by drinking a cup of hot coffee six months earlier was referred to our hospital. The hot coffee was consumed in a single gulp at a party. Although the patient had been treated conservatively at another hospital, his symptoms of dysphagia gradually worsened after discharge. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and computed tomography revealed a pinhole like area of stricture located 19 cm distally from the incisors to the esophagogastric junction, as well as circumferential stenosis with notable wall thickness at the same site. The patient underwent a thoracoscopic esophageal resection with reconstruction using ileocolon interposition. The pathological findings revealed wall thickening along the entire length of the esophagus, with massive fibrosis extending to the muscularis propria and adventitia at almost all levels. Treatment with balloon dilation for long areas of stricture is generally difficult, and stent placement in patients with benign esophageal stricture, particularly young patients, is not yet widely accepted due to the incidence of late adverse events. Considering the curability and qualityof-life associated with a long expected prognosis, we determined that surgery was the best treatment option for this young patient. In this case, we decided to perform an esophagectomy and reconstruction with ileocolon interposition in order to preserve the reservoir function of the stomach and to avoid any problems related to the reflux of gastric contents. In conclusion, resection of the esophagus is a treatment option in patients with benign esophageal injury, especially in cases involving young patients with refractory esophageal stricture. In addition, ileocolon interposition may help to improve the quality-of-life of patients.

Experimental research on the feature of an x-ray Talbot–Lau interferometer versus tube accelerating voltage

X-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer has been used most widely to perform x-ray phase-contrast imaging with a con- ventional low-brilliance x-ray source, and it yields high-sensitivity phase and dark-field images of samples producing low absorption contrast, thus beating tremendous potential for future clinical diagnosis. In this work, by changing the accel- erating voltage of the x-ray tube from 35 kV to 45 kV, x-ray phase-contrast imaging of a test sample is performed at each integer value of the accelerating voltage to investigate the characteristic of an x-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer （located in the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, Japan） versus tube voltage. Ex- perimental results and data analysis show that within a range this x-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer is not sensitive to the accelerating voltage of the tube with a constant fringe visibility of ~ 44%. This x-ray Talbot-Lau interferometer research demonstrates the feasibility of a new dual energy phase-contrast x-ray imaging strategy and the possibility to collect a refraction spectrum.

Visceral Fat Accumulation Is Associated with Increased Mortality Rate after Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Aim: Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is thought to be a safe and effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, in some HCC patients, it potentially shortens survival due to liver damage. We aimed to identify independent factors to predict overall survival of HCC after TACE. Methods: We included a total of 96 consecutive HCC patients who underwent TACE at Kobe University Hospital. Areas of skeletal muscle and fat tissue were measured by computed tomography (CT) scan before TACE. We divided the patients into two groups in terms of the presence or absence of 1-year mortality after TACE. Factors associated with 1-year mortality after TACE were assessed by multivariate analyses, and the optimal cut-off values were evaluated using a propensity score. Results: Multivariate analyses showed that visceral fat accumulation on CT was an independent factor associated with 1-year mortality after TACE (p = 0.033). There were no differences in skeletal muscle area and subcutaneous and intermuscular fat area between the two groups. Cut-off values for visceral fat area associated with 1-year mortality after TACE were defined as 33.3 cm2/m2 for males and 24.4 cm2/m2 for females. Conclusions: High visceral fat area was a prognostic factor associated with increased mortality rate in HCC patients undergoing TACE. Using this value, 1-year mortality risk after TACE would be better estimated before the day TACE was performed.
