The East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry(VLBI) Network(EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China,Japan and Korea.EAVN aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian regions.After the combination of the Korean VLBI Network(KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry(VERA) into Ka VA,further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively promoted.Here we report the first imaging results(at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with Ka VA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in China.To test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources,we observed four active galactic nuclei(AGN) having different brightness and morphology.As a result,we confirmed that the Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope(TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity,a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of Ka VA only.The addition of the Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope(NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular resolution.With the resulting high-dynamic-range,high-resolution images with EAVN(Ka VA+TMRT+NSRT),various fine-scale structures in our targets,such as the counter-jet in M87,a kink-like morphology of the 3 C 273 jet and the weak emission in other sources are successfully detected.This demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in general.Ongoing expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution,detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.

Purpose: The genus Pseudomonas is a ubiquitous microorganism frequently detected from immunocompromised patients. The inherent resistance to numerous antimicrobial agents contributes to the opportunistic character of this pathogen exhaustive monitoring of this pathogen is considered of critical importance to public health organizations. The reliable identification method able to distinguish genetic close Pseudomonas species is needed, because these organisms are difficult to differentiate by phenotypic or biochemical methods. The purpose of the present study was to design species-specific primers in order to identify and detect four Pseudomonas species which are frequently detected from the human oral cavities, and to investigate the distribution of these organisms in the living environment using a multiplex PCR. Methods: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed based on partial sequences of the rpoD gene of four Pseudomonas species. Swab samples were collected from fifty washstands, and the distribution of Pseudomonas species was investigated using a conventional PCR at genus level and a multiplex PCR at species level. Results: Multiplex PCR method developed in this study was able to distinguish four Pseudomonas species clearly. The genus Pseudomonas was detected from all samples (100%), whereas P. putida, P, aeruginosa, P. stutzeri and P. fluorescens were detected at 44%, 8%, 4% and 2% in fifty swab samples, respectively. Conclusion: Our developed one-step multiplex PCR method is accurate, specific, cost-effective, time-saving, and works without requiring DNA extraction. It was indicated that washstands were the uninhabitable environment for P. putida, P, aeruginosa, P. stutzeri and P. fluorescens.

BACKGROUND Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is a rare genetic disease and a leading cause of inherited alterations in plasma protein metabolism(APPM).AIM To understand the prevalence,burden and progression of liver disease in patients with APPM including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis of anonymized patient-level claims data from a German health insurance provider(AOK PLUS).The APPM cohort comprised patients with APPM(identified using the German Modification of the International Classification of Diseases-10th Revision[ICD-10-GM]code E88.0 between 01/01/2010-30/09/2020)and incident liver disease(ICD-10-GM codes K74,K70.2-3 and K71.7 between 01/01/2012-30/09/2020).The control cohort comprised patients without APPM but with incident liver disease.Outcomes were incidence/prevalence of liver disease in patients with APPM,demographics/baseline characteristics,diagnostic procedures,progression-free survival(PFS),disease progression and mortality.RESULTS Overall,2680 and 26299 patients were included in the APPM(fibrosis,96;cirrhosis,2584)and control(fibrosis,1444;cirrhosis,24855)cohorts,respectively.Per 100000 individuals,annual incidence and prevalence of APPM and liver disease was 10-15 and 36-51,respectively.In the APPM cohort,median survival was 4.7 years[95%confidence interval(CI):3.5-7.0]and 2.5 years(95%CI:2.3-2.8)in patients with fibrosis and cirrhosis,respectively.A higher proportion of patients in the APPM cohort experienced disease progression(92.0%)compared with the control cohort(67.2%).Median PFS was shorter in the APPM cohort(0.9 years,95%CI:0.7-1.1)compared with the control cohort(3.7 years,95%CI:3.6-3.8;P<0.001).Patients with cirrhosis in the control cohort had longer event-free survival for ascites,hepatic encephalopathy,hepatic failure and esophageal/gastric varices than patients with cirrhosis in the APPM cohort(P<0.001).Patients with fibrosis in the control cohort had longer event-free survival for ascites,cirrhosis,hepatic failure and esophageal/gastric va

Regular assumption of finite element meshes is a basic condition of most analysis of finite element approximations both for conventional conforming elements and nonconforming elements. The aim of this paper is to present a novel approach of dealing with the approximation of a four-degree nonconforming finite element for the second order elliptic problems on the anisotropic meshes. The optimal error estimates of energy norm and L^2-norm without the regular assumption or quasi-uniform assumption are obtained based on some new special features of this element discovered herein. Numerical results are given to demonstrate validity of our theoretical analysis.

Biomimetic Drag Reduction Study on Herringbone Riblets of Bird Feather

Birds have gradually formed various excellent structures such as streamlined shape and hollow shaft of feather to improve their flying performance by millions of years of natural selection. As typical property of bird feather, herringbone riblets align along the shaft of each feather, which is caused by perfect link of barbs, especially for the primary and secondary feathers of wings. Such herringbone riblets of feather are assumed to have great impact on drag reduction. In this paper, microstructures of secondary feathers of adult pigeons are investigated by SEM, and their structural parameters are statistically obtained. Based on quantitative analysis of feather structure, novel biomimetic herringbone riblets with narrow smooth edge are proposed to reduce surface drag. In comparison with traditional microgroove riblets and other drag reduction structures, the drag reduction rate of the proposed biomimetic herringbone riblets is experimentally clarified up to 16%, much higher than others. Moreover, the drag reduction mechanism of herringbone riblets are also confirmed and exploited by CFD.

Severe liver trauma among pediatric patients in the Japan Trauma Registry

Background Limited information exists regarding the clinical characteristics,management practices,and outcomes of pediatric patients with liver injury in Japan.The aim of this study is to evaluate the characteristics,management,and outcome of pediatric patients with liver injury in Japan.Methods We conducted a multicenter,retrospective cohort study using data from the Japan Trauma Data Bank between 2004 and 2018.Pediatric patients with liver injury were classified into the following management groups:nonoperative management(NOM);NOM with angioembolization(AE);operative management(OM).The primary outcome was in-hospital survival,and the secondary outcomes were dispositions,hospital length of stay(LOS),and rate of discharge to home.Results There were 308 pediatric patients with severe liver injury(organ injury scale grades≥Ⅲ)during the study period;135 patients had isolated liver injury and 173 patients had non-isolated liver injury.The rates of NOM,NOM with AE,and OM among all patients were 65%,23%,and 12%,respectively.AE was highly used both in patients with isolated liver injury(27%)and non-isolated liver injury(22%).In-hospital survival of patients with isolated liver injury and those with non-isolated liver injury were 99%and 88%,respectively.Regarding secondary outcomes among patients with isolated liver injury,82%were admitted to the intensive care unit.LOS was 11(8-14)days and 82%were discharged to home.Conclusions Our retrospective observational study showed that management of pediatric patients with severe liver injury in Japan was characterized by high utilization of AE.The in-hospital survival rate in Japan was comparable with that of other developed countries.

BACKGROUND Despite its decreased incidence in Japan,gastric cancer continues among the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in both men and women.Accordingly,efforts are still required to lower the mortality rate of gastric cancer in Japan.Maebashi City introduced endoscopic gastric cancer screening in 2004,and participants are able to choose between direct radiography and endoscopy.Hence,we expected to see a decrease in mortality rate from gastric cancer after introducing endoscopic screening and a difference in mortality rate reduction between screening methods.AIM To evaluate the impact on gastric cancer mortality rate of two types of gastric cancer screening in Maebashi City,Japan.METHODS Participants aged 40 to 79 years of the Maebashi City gastric cancer screening program in 2006 who were screened by direct radiography(n=11155)or endoscopy(n=10747)were included.Participants were followed until March 31,2012,by cross-referencing their data against the Gunma Prefecture cancer registry data.We compared the detection rate of gastric cancers.Then,we compared the mortality rate between the two groups.The Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the hazard ratio(HR)of gastric cancer death.Finally,the reduction in gastric cancer mortality rate associated with each screening method was evaluated.RESULTS Gastric cancer was detected in 22 participants undergoing direct radiography(detection rate,0.20%)and in 52 participants undergoing endoscopy(detection rate,0.48%).However,most gastric cancers detected by endoscopic screening were early cancers that may not have resulted in death.We found no significant difference in gastric cancer mortality rate between participants receiving annual screening and those who do not.When the number of gastric cancer deaths in the direct radiography group was set as 1 in the Cox proportional hazard analysis,the HR of gastric cancer death was 1.368(95%CI:0.7308-2.562)in the overall group of participants.The results showed no significant difference between the two screening

MOTION ERROR ESTIMATION OF 5-AXIS MACHINING CENTER USING DBB METHOD

In order to estimate the motion errors of 5-axis machine center, the double ball bar （DBB） method is adopted to realize the diagnosis procedure. The motion error sources of rotary axes in 5-axis machining center comprise of the alignment error of rotary axes and the angular error due to various factors, e.g. the inclination of rotary axes. From sensitive viewpoints, each motion error is possible to have a particular sensitive direction in which deviation of DBB error trace arises from only some specific error sources. The model of the DBB error trace is established according to the spatial geometry theory. Accordingly, the sensitive direction of each motion error source is made clear through numerical simulation, which is used as the reference patterns for rotational error estimation. The estimation method is proposed to easily estimate the motion error sources of rotary axes in quantitative manner. To verify the proposed DBB method for rotational error estimation, the experimental tests are carried out on a 5-axis machining center M-400 （MORISEIKI）. The effect of the mismatch of the DBB is also studied to guarantee the estimation accuracy. From the experimental data, it is noted that the proposed estimation method for 5-axis machining center is feasible and effective.

Clothing skirt designed on conical truss model

Several applications of Origami have been tested in industrial area. However, Origami based design is found only in lamp shade and wrapping in design area, and has not been practically applied especially in clothing. In this paper, the conical truss model is applied in the clothing skirt, and the simulation software from 2D to 3D is developed by parametric Origami module （POM）. Finally, the pattern is copied on felt clothing, and the scaled model of skirt on the basis of conical reverse truss model design is made.
