Micropulse laser trabeculoplasty under maximal tolerable glaucoma eyedrops:treatment effectiveness and impact of surgical expertise

AIM:To evaluate the effectiveness of micropulse laser trabeculoplasty(MLT)for eyes with open angle glaucoma(OAG)under maximal tolerable glaucoma eyedrops and to assess the effect of expertise performing MLT on its clinical ***:Medical records of 42 consecutive eyes of 34 patients diagnosed with OAG who underwent MLT were retrospectively *** effectiveness was determined using the Kaplan-Meier survival *** was defined as an intraocular pressure(IOP)reduction of21 mm Hg during two consecutive follow-up visits,or surgical intervention for *** determine the impact of MLT surgical expertise on clinical effectiveness,the eyes were divided into two groups according to whether the procedure was conducted by an experienced specialist(defined as a glaucoma specialist who had conducted at least ten MLT procedures)or a less experienced glaucoma *** difference in expertise was determined using a log-rank ***:MLT was conducted by three glaucoma *** overall survival rates were 0.76,0.48,and 0.44 at 1,3,and 6 mo,*** survival rates for MLT performed by a less experienced glaucoma specialist were 0.62,0.31,and 0.25(n=21 eyes)at 1,3,and 6 mo,respectively,whereas the survival rates for MLT performed by an experienced glaucoma specialist were 0.90,0.64,and 0.64(n=21 eyes)at 1,3,and 6 mo,*** log-rank test showed a significant difference in the survival curves of the two groups(P=0.0061).CONCLUSION:The 6-month effectiveness of MLT for controlling IOP is relatively limited in eyes with OAG using maximal tolerable glaucoma ***,its effectiveness may be improved if performed by a glaucoma specialist with sufficient MLT experience.

Flat friction stir spot welding of low carbon steel by double side adjustable tools

2 mm low carbon steel plates were successfully welded by the flat friction stir spot welding(FSSW) using double side adjustable tools, by which the keyhole formed in the conventional FSSW was eliminated and a flat surface on both the top and bottom sides of the welded joints was obtained. In addition, the hook shape usually generated in the conventional FSSW was eliminated by this technique, and the unbonded interface was parallel to the surface of the sheets. Owing to the enlarged bonded interface width by eliminating the keyhole and the intermixed interface by the adjustable probe, the plug fracture occurred under all the welding conditions in the present study. Due to the suppression of the thickness thinning and elimination of the hook shape, the joint performance was improved in the plug fracture mode. The shear tensile performance was considered to strongly depend on the microstructure in the tip area of the unbonded interface and the maximum shear fracture load of 23.0 kN was achieved in this study.

Interface strengthening in dissimilar double-sided friction stir spot welding of AZ31/ZK60 magnesium alloys by adjustable probes

Dissimilar welding of AZ31/ZK60 magnesium alloys with a thickness of 2 mm was successfully carried out by the double-sided friction stir spot welding with adjustable probes.A dissimilar joint bearing flat surfaces on both sides without a keyhole was obtained and the shear failure load of 8.7±0.5 kN was *** role of the adjustable probes has been revealed in *** the center of the stir zone,the welding interface structure was heterogeneous around which some distinct oxides still remained,leading to a weak interface *** the contrary,the welding interface structure around the shoulder/probe interface was homogeneous with no oxides giving rise to a strong interface strength,which is attributed to the severe material flow introduced by the adjustable *** addition,the vicinity outside the shoulder/probe interface,where the fracture occurred during the shear tensile tests,was also strengthened owing to the shearing and torsion by the adju stable ***,a stable plug failure can be obtained and the joint properties can be improved.

Integrating the effect of abutments in estimating the average vertical stress of elastic hard rock pillars by combining numerical modelling and artificial neural networks

Estimating average vertical pillar stresses is a critical step in designing room-and-pillar *** analytical methods can be used to estimate the vertical stresses acting on the ***,the present analytical methods fail to adequately account for the influence of abutments on the distribution of vertical stresses,especially when applied to narrow panel widths and pillar layouts comprising evenly spaced *** this study,a multi-layer perceptron neural network(MLPNN)was applied to predict the vertical loads of regular pillars more *** of room-and-pillar mine layouts were modeled using a displacement discontinuity method(DDM),and a database of 2355 sampled pillar cases was *** MLPNN was trained based on this database,and its prediction capabilities were further validated using simulations by a finite difference code(i.e.,FLAC3D).The model predictions and the FLAC3D simulations reasonably agreed with a regression coefficient of *** model was also adapted for mine cases with evenly spaced barrier pillars,and its application to a real case study mine has shown to provide accurate pillar stress estimations;hence,this model is suitable for practical use at *** though the MLPNN model cannot be applied universally to all mine situations,it seems as a significant improvement over existing analytical techniques in terms of accounting for the influence of abutments on pillar stresses.

A new algorithm based on metaheuristics for data clustering

This paper presents a new algorithm for clustering a large amount of *** improved the ant colony clustering algorithm that uses an ant’s swarm intelligence,and tried to overcome the weakness of the classical cluster analysis *** our proposed algorithm,improvements in the efficiency of an agent operation were achieved,and a new function "cluster condensation" was *** proposed algorithm is a processing method by which a cluster size is reduced by uniting similar objects and incorporating them into the cluster *** with classical cluster analysis methods,the number of steps required to complete the clustering can be suppressed to 1% or less by performing this procedure,and the dispersion of the result can also be ***,our clustering algorithm has the advantage of being possible even in a small-field cluster *** addition,the number of objects that exist in the field decreases because the cluster condenses;therefore,it becomes possible to add an object to a space that has become *** other words,first,the majority of data is put on *** are then clustered,gradually adding parts of the standby data to the clustering *** method can be adopted for a large amount of *** experiments confirmed that our proposed algorithm can theoretically applied to an unrestricted volume of data.

Effect of Ca addition on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of asymmetric double-sided friction stir welded AZ61 magnesium alloy

The effects of 2%Ca addition on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the asymmetric double-sided friction stir welded magnesium alloy AZ61 were *** to the Ca-free AZ61magnesium alloy,the addition of 2%Ca significantly refines the grains in the stir zone after *** to the existence of thermally stable Al2Ca particles,there is no noticeable change in the grain size in the stir zone regardless of the welding heat *** electron backscattered diffraction analysis at the center of the stir zone confirmed the significant deterioration of the(0001)texture strength from the addition of 2%*** tensile test of the joint suggested that the addition of 2%Ca provides stable tensile properties to the joint regardless of the welding *** critical(0001)texture strength that determines the ultimate tensile strength decreased from 20 to 15 by the Ca *** addition of Ca enhanced the deterioration of the plastic elongation when the(0001)texture strength increased.

Study of Choked Flows through a Convergent Nozzle

When sonic nozzles of significantly smaller diameter are used as standard flow meters,the critical back pressure ratio is affected by the boundary layer at the nozzle ***,the effect of the boundary layer on choking criteria is still ***,the choking phenomenon of a convergent nozzle flow has been experimentally investigated using four convergent nozzles with the same diameter followed by a straight pipe of a variable *** a result,it is shown that the critical back pressure ratio is smaller than that for the steady one-dimensional is-entropic flow and decreases as the boundary layer thickness ***,the main flow Mach number at the nozzle exit is supersonic when the back pressure ratio is equivalent to the choking condition,and the Mach number increases as the boundary layer thickness increases.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is characterized by adult-onset progressive degeneration of upper and lower motor *** numbers of genes are found to be associated with ALS;among those,the first identified gene,SOD1 coding a Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase protein(SOD1),has been regarded as the gold standard in the research on a pathomechanism of *** accumulation of misfolded SOD1 in affected spinal motor neurons has been established as a pathological hallmark of ALS caused by mutations in SOD1(SOD1-ALS).Nonetheless,the involvement of wild-type SOD1 remains quite controversial in the pathology of ALS with no SOD1 mutations(non-SOD1 ALS),which occupies more than 90%of total ALS *** vitro studies have revealed post-translationally controlled misfolding and aggregation of wild-type as well as of mutant SOD1 proteins;therefore,SOD1 proteins could be a therapeutic target not only in SOD1-ALS but also in more prevailing cases,non-SOD1 *** order to search for evidence on misfolding and aggregation of wild-type SOD1 in vivo,we reviewed pathological studies using mouse models and patients and then summarized arguments for and against possible involvement of wild-type SOD1 in non-SOD1 ALS as well as in SOD1-ALS.

In this paper, we consider the backward Euler discretization derived from a continuous SIRS epidemic model, which contains a remaining problem that our discrete model has two solutions for infected population; one is positive and the other is negative. Under an additional positiveness condition on infected population, we show that the backward Euler discretization is one of simple discrete-time analogue which preserves the global asymptotic stability of equilibria of the corresponding continuous model.

Global stability for a delayed multi-group SIRS epidemic model with cure rate and incomplete recovery rate

In this paper, by applying Lyapunov functional approach, we establish a sufficient condition on the global stability of a ＂delayed＂ multi-group SIRS epidemic model with cure rate and incomplete recovery rate which does not depend on the delays and is an extension of the ＂light drug model＂ studied in the recent paper [Muroya, Li and Kuniya, Complete global analysis of an SIRS epidemic model with graded cure rate and incomplete recovery rate, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 410 （2014） 719-732] to a multi-group model. Applying a Lyapunov functional on total population of each compartment, we offer new techniques for the delayed system, how to prove the permanence, the existence of the endemic equilibrium and the global stability of disease-free equilibrium for the reproduction number R0 ≤ 1 and endemic equilibrium forR0 ≥ 1.
