Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) is a key enzyme in early glycolysis, which catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose 6-phosphate (G6Ph) to fructose 6-phosphate. We have constructed an Escherichia coli K12 strain with a deleted pgi gene (Δpgi) and shown that this strain in comparison with the parental strain 1) accumulates higher amount of G6Ph, 2) grows slowly, and 3) exhibits higher spontaneous mutation frequency to rifampicin resistance (Rifr), when grown on high glucose minimal medium. Intriguingly, the spontaneous mutation rate to Rifr was inversely related to the degree of E. coli chromosomal DNA modification with sugar derivatives. We measured higher concentrations of Amadori products, fluorophores (360 nm excitation/440 nm emission) and carboxymethyl residues in the chromosomal DNA of the E. coli parental strain than in DNA of the isogenic Δpgi strain. To explain this apparent paradox we hypothesized that PGI might be implicated in repair of G6Ph-derived lesions in DNA. In favor of our hypothesis, we further demonstrate that protein extract from the E. coli PGI proficient strain but not from the PGI deficient strain catalyzes the release of G6Ph from G6Ph-modified single stranded DNA oligonucleotide and from its hybrid duplex with a complementary peptide nucleic acid.

We studied the effect of titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))nanoparticles(NPs)on dielectric behavior of Naþion-conducting salt-complexed polymer nanocomposite system formed from a binary polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP),with the addition of both sodium metaperiodate(NaIO_(4))at concentration 10 wt.%and TiO_(2) NPs of size10 nm,at concentrations 1,2,3,4 and 5 wt.%.Free standing nanocomposite PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) films(150m)were characterized at room-temperature by analyzing their complex electrical impedance and dielectric spectra in the range 1 Hz–1 MHz.At the concentration of 3 wt.%of TiO_(2) NPs,both ion conductivity and dielectric permittivity of the PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) ion-conducting dielectrics reach an enhancement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to nanoadditive-free case.

Rhabdomyolysis after the Intake of Illicit Drugs as a Cause of Acute Renal Failure

Background: Rhabdomyolysis (RM) is striate muscle-cell damage with the release of intracellular substances to the circulation—myoglobin, muscular enzymes, potassium, etc., with or without the development of acute renal injury. RM due to the intake of illicit and controlled substances, including cocaine, amphetamine and its derivates, cannabis, and alcohol abuse is a common cause of acute renal failure in adolescents and adults. Aim: to alert clinicians to the need of early diagnosis and treatment of RM due to the intake of controlled substances and energy drinks. Case Presentation: We describe a 20-year-old male patient with acute renal failure due to rhabdomyolysis after the intake of controlled substances, energy drinks, physical efforts and dehydration. The renal biopsy revealed acute tubular injury. After rehydration, alkalization, temporary dialysis treatment, intravenous corticosteroids and symptomatic treatment the patient restored renal function. Conclusion: RM can be a severe life-threatening complication of the intake of controlled substances combined with strenuous physical activity, energy drinks and dehydration. The described case represents a typical scenario of RM developing secondary to controlled substance abuse in combination with alcohol and strenuous physical activity. The prompt diagnosis and the timely initiation of supportive (rehydration and alkalization) and corticosteroid therapy and the early dialysis lead to fast resolution of renal failure. The clinicians should keep in mind illicit drugs, alcohol and energy drinks and physical efforts as possible triggers of RM and acute kidney injury, especially in young people.

The second law of thermodynamics, i.e. the law stating that the entropy in isolated macroscopic system can never decrease, is tightly connected to the work of the device called perpetual motion machine of second kind. Often this law is also defined as the inability to construct such a device. In the current paper we give complete, independent and consistent definitions of static, stationary and changing physical field. Based on that for the first time we give summarising, correct and complete definitions of natural resource machine and perpetual motion machine of second kind as well as motion machine of second kind in the set of tardyons and luxons. We present a principal structure of a motion machine of second kind using which we show that the Clausius statement and its equivalent statements in the thermodynamics can be violated for a practically big interval-time even under equilibrium fluctuations.

The main aim of the given research study was to find out how Russia can reestablish its geostrategic advantage from Europe to Asia.The analysis conducted in this paper gave the opportunity to determine the character of the relations with the West and the East,as well as provide a detail analysis of a potential geopolitical shift to Asia.In order to achieve this goal,the second chapter of this work is dedicated towards evaluating the existing relations with Western bloc and the potential difference the parties are sharing.With the help of different statistics,the second chapter presents an analysis of the conditions in which Russia currently is after the implementation of the western sanctions.Chapter 3 of this paper revolves around the idea of Russia's shift to Asia.After analyzing the existing relations with the countries in the East,the list of possible benefits and challenges was presented in front of the reader.The forth chapter of this paper presents an analysis of what is the difference between the Western and Eastern strategy,how Russia can regain its geostrategic advantage,as well as 3 forecasts with different outcomes for the future of the Russian Federation.Finally,a set of policy recommendations were formed,that would improve Moscow's position in the world affairs.The current foreign policy has its flaws:its military-based,overly aggressive and anti-western.As a result,Kremlin has found itself in strong political and economic isolation.In order to regain its position in the world,Moscow will have to introduce major changes:the country should implement internal modernizing reforms,dedicate more attention to the Russia's Far East,pursue a diverse and balanced approach in the world,especially in the East;follow a more positive agenda and show more commitment to the Asian region.Without these features,Russian foreign policy will be hopeless and Moscow will continue to experience economic and political decline.

研究目的分别通过电针与温针灸颈夹脊穴的治疗方法,对神经根型颈椎病患者进行临床治疗,观察并评估电针与温针灸颈夹脊穴对神经根型颈椎病的治疗作用及安全性,为临床提供治疗神经根型颈椎病更有效、更可靠的方式并提供依据。研究方法60例符合纳入标准,同时不含排除标准的患者,被随机分为电针组30例与温针灸组30例,所有患者都采用相同针刺方法,其后电针组加用电针,温针灸组加用艾条行温针灸,利用田中靖久的神经根型颈椎病20分法量表作为疗效的评价指标,观察二组不良反应发生情况作为安全性评价指标。对治疗前后的疗效评价指标进行组内对比,对二组间疗效评价指标进行组间对比,对二组安全性评价指标进行组间对比,对不同证型患者的疗效指标进行证型间对比。研究结果两组患者治疗前在年龄、性别、病史、田中靖久评分及VAS评分上差异均无统计学意义(P>0.05),两组患者在基线的对比上一致,因此可比较性良好。电针组、温针灸组在治疗前后田中靖久评分、VAS评分的组内对比上,差异均有显著统计学意义(P0.05),说明电针颈夹脊穴及温针灸颈夹脊穴对各证型神经根型颈椎病疗效相当。电针组与温针灸组在不良反应发生情况上的对比,差异无统计学意义(P>0.05),说明二组安全性相当。研究结论电针颈夹脊穴与温针灸颈夹脊穴对神经根型颈椎病均可取得良好的临床疗效,且二组临床疗效相当,均为神经根型颈椎病安全有效的治疗方法;电针组、温针灸组中各证型的神经根型颈椎病疗效相当,电针颈夹脊穴、温针灸颈夹脊穴均可对各证型神经根型颈椎病取得良好疗效。

Elastomer Composites with Enhanced Ice Grip Based on Renewable Resources

Slips and falls on icy surfaces can cause serious injuries of people. The primary risk factor for slipping incidents is undoubtedly the decreased friction coefficient between the shoe sole and the ice or snow surface. Nowadays environmental protection has been gaining significance and becoming highly important for the various innovation strategies. In rubber industry the concept of environmental protection is more often associated with the maximum use of elastomers and ingredients from renewable sources in the manufacture of rubber products. The aim of this work is to investigate the possibilities of using elastomers and ingredients from renewable sources—epoxidized natural rubber, silica obtained by rice husks incineration and microcrystalline cellulose—as fillers and rapeseed oil as a process additive in compositions, intended for the manufacture of soles for winter footwear having an increased coefficient of friction to icy surfaces. The tribological tests based on the coefficient of friction evaluated the adhesion of the composites to the icy surfaces at different temperatures. The complex evaluation of developed composites revealed those containing microcrystalline cellulose and biogenic amorphous silica at a 1:1 ratio as the most suitable for making footwear soles because of the best combination of physicо-mechanical properties and coefficient of friction.

生物多样性和人类活动之间的冲突通常具有重要的政治、经济和环境响应,欧盟(EU)已经并将持续加强对这种冲突的关注。欧盟利用一整套自上而下和自下而上的方式来处理这些冲突,取得了不同程度的成功。欧洲目前面临的新挑战是10个新国家整合到欧盟的一体化,以及欧盟立法涵盖了一系列附加的生物多样性富集生境。中欧和东欧国家(CEEC)丰富的生物多样性很可能面临着这一一体化过程中某些方面的威胁,预计会出现一些生物多样性保护和人类活动之间的冲突。本文评述了中欧和东欧国家生物多样性保护和人类活动之间存在的一些冲突,预测了特别是新政策新立法执行后与欧盟一体化有关的冲突,最后,探讨了可能的冲突管理措施。

Betula L.(birch)is a pioneer hardwood tree species with ecological,economic,and evolutionary importance in the Northern Hemisphere.We sequenced the Betula platyphylla genome and assembled the sequences into 14 chromosomes.The Betula genome lacks evidence of recent whole-genome duplication and has the same paleoploidy level as Vitis vinifera and Prunus mume.Phylogenetic analysis of lignin pathway genes coupled with tissue-specific expression patterns provided clues for understanding the formation of higher ratios of syringyl to guaiacyl lignin observed in Betula species.Our transcriptome analysis of leaf tissues under a time-series cold stress experiment revealed the presence of the MEKK1–MKK2–MPK4 cascade and six additional mitogen-activated protein kinases that can be linked to a gene regulatory network involving many transcription factors and cold tolerance genes.Our genomic and transcriptome analyses provide insight into the structures,features,and evolution of the B.platyphylla genome.The chromosome-level genome and gene resources of B.platyphylla obtained in this study will facilitate the identification of important and essential genes governing important traits of trees and genetic improvement of B.platyphylla.
