Could CMIP6 climate models reproduce the early-2000s global warming slowdown?

The unexpected global warming slowdown during 1998–2013 challenges the existing scientific understanding of global temperature change mechanisms,and thus the simulation and prediction ability of state-of-the-art climate models since most models participating in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5)cannot simulate ***,we examine whether the new-generation climate models in CMIP6 can reproduce the recent global warming slowdown,and further evaluate their capacities for simulating key-scale natural variabilities which are the most likely causes of the *** results show that although the CMIP6 models present some encouraging improvements when compared with CMIP5,most of them still fail to reproduce the warming *** considerably overestimate the warming rate observed in 1998–2013,exhibiting an obvious warming acceleration rather than the observed *** is probably associated with their deficiencies in simulating the distinct temperature change signals from the human-induced long-term warming trend and/or the three crucial natural variabilities at interannual,interdecadal,and multidecadal *** contrast,the 4 models that can successfully reproduce the slowdown show relatively high skills in simulating the long-term warming trend and the three keyscale natural *** work may provide important insight for the simulation and prediction of near-term climate changes.

The objectives of this study were to 1） determine the variation of nutrient digestion, plasma metabolites and oxidative stress parameters triggered by induced subacute ruminal acidosis （SARA）; and 2） evaluate the ability of pelleted beet pulp （BP） as a replacement for ground corn to alleviate SARA. Eight Holstein-Friesian cows were fed four diets during four successive17 day periods： 1） total mixed ration （TMR） containing 0% finely ground wheat （FGW）（WO）; 2） TMR containing 10% FGW （W10）; 3） TMR containing 20% FGW （W20）; and 4） TMR containing 10% BP as a replacement for 10% ground corn （BP10）. The SARA induction protocol reduced the mean ruminal pH from 6.37 to 5.94, and the minimum ruminal pH decreased from 5.99 to 5.41 from baseline to challenge period. Mean ruminal pH increased from 5.94 to 6.05, and minimum daily ruminal pH increased from 5.41 to 5.63, when BP was substituted for corn. The apparent digestibility of nutrients was not affected by the dietary treatments, except that the digestibility of neutral detergent fibre （NDF） and acid detergent fibre （ADF） was reduced in cows fed the W20 diet compared with cows fed the W0 and W10 diets, and cows fed the BP10 diet had higher NDF and ADF digestibility than the cows fed the W20 diet. Cows fed the W20 diet had a lower plasma concentration of 13-hydroxybutyrate （BHBA）, non-esterified fatty acids （NEFA）, cholesterol, triglyceride, and total antioxidative capacity （TAC）, and a higher plasma concentration of glucose, insulin, malonaldehyde （MDA）, super oxygen dehydrogenises （SOD）, and glutathione peroxidase （GSH-Px） than cows fed the W0 diet. Substitution of BP for corn increased concentrations of plasma BHBA and TAC, but decreased concentrations of plasma MDA. Bottom Currents Observed in and Around a Submarine Valley on the Continental Slope of the Northern South China Sea

Bottom currents at about 1000m depth in and around a submarine valley on the continental slope of the northern South China Sea were studied by a 14-month long experiment from July 2013 to September 2014. The observations reveal that bottom currents are strongly influenced by the topography, being along valley axis or isobaths. Power density spectrum analysis shows that all the currents have significant peaks at diurnal and semi-diurnal frequencies. Diurnal energy is dominant at the open slope site, which is consistent with many previous studies. However, at the site inside the valley the semi-diurnal energy dominates, although the distance between the two sites of observation is quite small （11 kin） compared to a typical horizontal first-mode internal tide wavelength （200 km）. We found this phenomenon is caused by the focusing of internal waves of certain frequencies in the valley. The inertial peak is found only at the open slope site in the first deployment but missing at the inside valley site and the rest of the de- ployments. Monthly averaged residual currents reveal that the near-bottom currents on the slope flow southwestward throughout the year except in August and September, 2013, from which we speculate that this is a result of the interaction between a mesoscale eddy and the canyon/sag topography. Currents inside the valley within about 10mab basically flow along slope and in the layers above the 10mab the currents are northwestward, that is, from the deep ocean to the shelf. The monthly mean current vectors manifest an Ek- man layer-like vertical structure at both sites, which rotate counter-clockwise looking from above.

Traffic flow prediction plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems and is of great significance in the applications of traffic control and urban *** to the complexity of road traffic flow data,traffic flow prediction has been one of the challenging tasks to fully exploit the spatiotemporal characteristics of roads to improve prediction *** this study,a combined flow direction level traffic flow prediction graph convolutional network(GCN)and long short-term memory(LSTM)model based on spatiotemporal characteristics is ***,a GCN model is employed to capture the topological structure of the data graph and extract the spatial features of road ***,due to the capability to handle long-term dependencies,the longterm memory is used to predict the time series of traffic flow and extract the time *** proposed model is evaluated using real-world data,which are obtained from the intersection of Liuquan Road and Zhongrun Avenue in the Zibo High-Tech Zone of *** results show that the developed combined GCNLSTM flow direction level traffic flow prediction model can perform better than the single models of the LSTM model and GCN model,and the combined ARIMA-LSTM model in traffic flow has a strong spatiotemporal correlation.

Surgical Therapeutic Strategy for Non-small Cell Lung Cancer with Mediastinal Lymph Node Metastasis (N2)

Background and objective Approximately 30% of patients who are diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are classified as N2 on the basis of metastasis to the mediastinal lymph nodes. The effectiveness of surgery for these patients remains controversial. Although surgeries in recent years are proved to be effective to some extent,yet due to many reasons,5-year survival rate after surgery varies greatly from patient to patient. Thus it is necessary to select patients who have a high probability of being be cured through an operation,who are suitable to receive surgery and the best surgical methods so as to figure out the conditions under which surgical treatment can be chosen and the factors that may influence prognosis. Methods 165 out of 173 patients with N2 NSCLC were treated with surgery in our department from January 1999 to May 2003,among whom 130 were male,43 female and the sex ratio was 3:1,average age 53,ranging from 29 to 79. The database covers the patients’ complete medical history including the information of their age,sex,location and size of tumor,date of operation,surgical methods,histologic diagnosis,clinical stage,post-operative TNM stage,neoadjuvant treatment and chemoradiotherapy. The methods of clinical stage verification include chest X-ray,chest CT,PET,mediastinoscopy,bronchoscope (+?),brain CT or MRI,abdominal B ultrasound (or CT),and bone ECT. The pathological classification was based on the international standard for lung cancer (UICC 1997). Survival time was analyzed from the operation date to May 2008 with the aid of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis,Log-rank test and Cox multiplicity were adopted respectively to obtain patients’ survival curve,survival rate and the impact possible factors may have on their survival rate. Dear Editor,Currently,there are no FDA-approved disease-modifying therapies that can prevent,halt,or reverse Alzheimer's disease(AD).As the unsatisfactory of amyloid-p-targeted treatment in recent years,development of Tau-targeted active immunotherapy takes much concern.1 Tau protein,a major microtubule-associated protein in the nervous system,was found to be abnormally hyperphosphorylated at six epitopes:Ser396/404,Ser202,Thr205,Ser238,and Ser262 in AD patients.2 Hence,immunotherapy targeting more highly-expressed phosphorylated Tau(pTau)species may induce a sufficient pool of pTau antibodies to eliminate pathological tau and elicit cognitive improvement.

Tracheal Carinal Reconstruction and Bronchovasculoplasty in Central Type Bronchogenic Carcinoma

Background and objective Because radical resection for lung cancer invading the initial borderline of different lobes and carina is difficult,we tried to analyse the variables of successful tracheal carinoplasty and bronchovasculoplasty to discover a proper approach for appropriate early and long term results. Methods Of 1 399 lung resections for primary lung cancer performed in our hospital from April 1985 to December 2006,133 underwent bronchoplastic surgeries,including 15 carinoplasty cases and 118 sleeve lobectomy (SL) cases,and 118 pneumoectomy (PN) cases were compared at the same time. Results Complications occurred in 18 cases,with no operative related mortality. For all patients,the 1 year,3 year,and 5 year survival rates were 79.8%,56.7% and 31.2%,respectively. The 5 year survival rate by cancer stage was 69.2% for Ib,40.6% for IIb,19.6% for IIIa,and 16.6% for IIIa (N2). Conclusion Selection of cases,clearance of lymph nodes,disposal of the bronchus and pulmonary vessel and replacement or restoration of the superior vena cava are the main factors influencing prognosis.
