Ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potential from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds emissions in China

Volatile organic compounds （VOCs） are major precursors for ozone and secondary organic aerosol （SOA）, both of which greatly harm human health and significantly affect the Earth＇s climate. We simultaneously estimated ozone and SOA formation from anthropogenic VOCs emissions in China by employing photochemical ozone creation potential （POCP） values and SOA yields. We gave special attention to large molecular species and adopted the SOA yield curves from latest smog chamber experiments. The estimation shows that alkylbenzenes are greatest contributors to both ozone and SOA formation （36.0% and 51.6%, respectively）, while toluene and xylenes are largest contributing individual VOCs. Industry solvent use, industry process and domestic combustion are three sectors with the largest contributions to both ozone （24.7%, 23.0% and 17.8%, respectively） and SOA （22.9%, 34.6% and 19.6%, respectively） formation. In terms of the formation potential per unit VOCs emission, ozone is sensitive to open biomass burning, transportation, and domestic solvent use, and SOA is sensitive to industry process, domestic solvent use, and domestic combustion. Biomass stoves, paint application in industrial protection and buildings, adhesives application are key individual sources to ozone and SOA formation, whether measured by total contribution or contribution per unit VOCs emission. The results imply that current VOCs control policies should be extended to cover most important industrial sources, and the control measures for biomass stoves should be tightened. Finally, discrepant VOCs control policies should be implemented in different regions based on their ozone/aerosol concentration levels and dominant emission sources for ozone and SOA formation potential.

AIM:To investigate the etiology of esophageal cancer among Taiwan Residents ***:This is a multi-center,hospital-based,case-control *** patients consisted of women who were newly diagnosed and pathology-proven to have esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) from three large medical centers(one from Northern and two from Southern Taiwan,respectively)between August 2000 and December *** ESCC patient was matched with 4 healthy women based on age(within 3 years)and hospital of origin,from the Department of Preventive Medicine in each hospital.A total of 51 case patients and 204 controls,all women,were ***:Frequencies of smokers and drinkers among ESCC patients were 19.6%and 21.6%,respectively,which were significantly higher than smokers(4.4%) and drinkers(4.4%)among controls(OR=4.07,95%CI:1.36-12.16,P=0.01;OR=3.55,95%CI:1.03-12.27,P=0.04).Women who drank an amount of alcohol more than 158 g per week had a 20.58-fold greater risk(95%CI:1.72-245.62,P=0.02)of ESCC than those who never drank alcohol after adjusting for other covariates,although the sample size was ***:Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking,especially heavy drinking,are the major risks for developing ESCC in Taiwan Residents women.

Biomechanical Study on the Novel Biomimetic Hemi-Pelvis Prosthesis

A pelvic endoprosthesis is the primary means of pelvic reconstruction after internal hemipelvectomy. In this study, a novel biomimetic hemipelvic prosthesis, including an artificial ilium, an artificial acetabulum, and an artificial pubis, was developed. A Finite Element Method （FEM） was carried out to investigate the biomechanical performance of a pelvis reconstructed with biomimetic hemipelvic prosthesis. Two models, including the reconstructed pelvis and the original pelvis （control model）, were established according to the geometry from CT data of a human male patient with pelvic bone sarcomas. The FE models predict that the biomeehanical function of the pelvic ring can be reestablished using this prosthesis. Results show that the body force loaded on the S 1 vertebra is restored and transferred towards the sacro-iliac joint, and along the ilium onto the bearing surface of the artificial ilium, then to the artificial acetabulum and pubis. Von Mises stresses observed in this reconstructed pelvis model are still within a low and elastic range below the yielding strength of cortical bone and Ti6A14V. The values of deformation and strain of the reconstructed pelvis are close to the data obtained in the original pelvis. With the partial replacement of the pubis, little influence is found towards the pubis symphysis. However, the interface between the prosthesis and pelvic bone may become the critical part of the reconstructed pelvis due to the discontinuity in the material properties, which results in stress shielding and deformation constraining. So a biomimetic flexible connection or inter layer to release the deformation of pelvis is suggested in future designing.

We synthesized Cu3.8Ni/CoO and Cu3.8Ni/MnO nanoparticles via an easy and scalable solution synthesis. The synthesized Cu3.8Ni/CoO and Cu3.8Ni/MnO nano- particles were annealed to remove the organic surfactants without phase transitions or side reactions. Electrons can be transferred via metallic Cu3.8Ni, which will not react with lithium ions. The heterogeneous structures of Cu3.8Ni/CoO and Cu3.8Ni/MnO nanopartides could enhance the lithium ion mobility and improve the life cycle, and these materials are therefore promising candidates as high- power-density and high-energy-density anode materials for lithium-ion batteries in diverse applications, such as electrical vehicles.

The spacetime metric for a rotating black hole in a quintessential field can take various forms owing to the ambiguity of the state equation for quintessential dark energy in rotating spacetime. Herein, to provide a more physical solution, the metric is determined by imposing the laws of thermodynamics of a black hole, which is typically valid in most systems. The new metric ensures the validity of the first and second laws of thermodynamics and can degenerate to the known non-rotating metric in the quintessential field. Moreover, we set an upper limit for the black hole rotation parameter, a, in our metric according to the weak energy condition(WEC).
