To the Editor:Optic neuritis(ON)usually ends with one episode,but recurs in 3%to 5%of patients.Among recurrent patients,those that emerge negative from multiple sclerosis or neuromyelitis optica(NMO)workup are diagnosed with chronic relapsing inflammatory optic neuropathy(CRION).This disease group,first named by Kidd et al,[1]refers to a clinical situation in which inflammatory optic nerve inflammation on both sides occurs repeatedly and worsens when steroids or immu-nosuppressants are discontinued.Early diagnosis is important in this group because the risk of blindness is significant,and as such,treatment is focused on preserving vision.however,because a significant number of CRION patients suffer from ocular pain,alleviation of pain should not be overlooked.

Objective:To investigate the effects of Clean-DM1(C-DM1),a polyherbal formulation of Radix Scrophulariae,Radix Astragali,Rhizoma Atractylodis,and Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae,on high-fat diet(HFD)-induced diabetes mice.Methods:The information about active components of C-DM1 extract and molecular mechanism was obtained from network pharmacology analysis.Main compounds of C-DM1 extract by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(HPLC-MS)analysis were conducted for quality control.For in vivo study,mice were induced diabetes by HFD for 12 weeks.The mice in the normal group(Nor)were maintained with a regular diet and treated with saline by gavage.The HFD model mice were randomly divided into 3 groups,including a HFD diabetic model group,a C-DM1 extract-administered group(C-DM1,500 mg/kg),and metformin-administered groups(Met,500 mg/kg),8 mice in each group.Food intake,body weight(BW),and fasting blood glucose(FBG)levels were recorded weekly for 4 weeks.After 4 weeks of treatment,alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),blood glucose,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C)were determined using an automated clinical chemistry analyzer,and homeostatic model for assessing insulin resistance(hoMA-IR)levels and oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT)were detected.The histopathological changes of liver and pancreatic tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining.Insulin receptor substrate(IRS)/phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(AKT)and adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK)expressions in liver and pancreas tissues were detected by Western blot analysis.Results:HPLC-MS identified dihydroisotanshinone,dihydroisotanshinone I,cryptotanshinone,harpagoside,and atractyloside A in C-DM1 extract.The administration of C-DM1 extract significantly decreased body weight,calorie intake,and the levels of blood glucose and insulin in the diabetic mice(P<0.05 or P<0.01).The C-DM1 extract administration improved the impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance

The global incidence rates of in-hospital cardiac arrest(IHCA)range from1.2 to 9.0 per1,000 hospitalized patients,as per the National Cardiac Arrest Database.[1] While IHCAs tend to exhibit superior 30-day survival rates relative to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) due to situational advantages,such as immediate access to medical personnel and treatments.

Composite solid electrolytes(CSEs)have emerged as promising candidates for safe and high-energy–density solid-state lithium metal batteries(SSLMBs).however,concurrently achieving exceptional ionic conductivity and interface compatibility between the electrolyte and electrode presents a significant challenge in the development of high-performance CSEs for SSLMBs.To overcome these challenges,we present a method involving the in-situ polymerization of a monomer within a self-supported porous Li_(6.4)La_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)(LLZT)to produce the CSE.The synergy of the continuous conductive LLZT network,well-organized polymer,and their interface can enhance the ionic conductivity of the CSE at room temperature.Furthermore,the in-situ polymerization process can also con-struct the integration and compatibility of the solid electrolyte–solid electrode interface.The synthesized CSE exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 1.117 mS cm^(-1),a significant lithium transference number of 0.627,and exhibited electrochemical stability up to 5.06 V vs.Li/Li+at 30℃.Moreover,the Li|CSE|LiNi_(0.8)Co_(0.1)Mn_(0.1)O_(2) cell delivered a discharge capacity of 105.1 mAh g^(-1) after 400 cycles at 0.5 C and 30℃,corresponding to a capacity retention of 61%.This methodology could be extended to a variety of ceramic,polymer electrolytes,or battery systems,thereby offering a viable strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of CSEs for high-energy–density SSLMBs.

Inadequate interfacial contact between lithium and solid-state electrolytes(SSEs)leads to elevated impedance and the growth of lithium dendrites,presenting significant obstacles to the practical viability of solid-state batteries(SSBs).To ameliorate interfacial contact,optimizing the surface treatment of SSEs has been widely adopted.however,the formation of LiCl through acid treatment,an equally crucial factor impacting SSB performance,has received limited attention,leaving its underlying mechanism unclear.Our study aims to shed light on SSE characteristics following LiCl formation and the removal of Li_(2)CO_(3) through acid treatment.We seek to establish quantifiable links between SSE surface structure and SSB performance,focusing on interfacial resistance,current distribution,critical current density(CCD),and lithium deposition.The formation of LiCl,occurring as Li_(2)CO_(3) is removed through acid treatment,effectively mitigates lithium dendrite formation on SSE surfaces.This action inhibits electron injection and reduces the diffusion rate of Li atoms.Simultaneously,acid treatment transforms the SSE surface into a lithiophilic state by eliminating surface Li_(2)CO_(3).Consequently,the interfacial resistance between lithium and SSEs substantially decreases from 487.67 to 35.99Ωcm^(2) at 25°C.This leads to a notably high CCD of 1.3 mA cm^(-2) and a significantly extended cycle life of 1,000 h.Furthermore,in full SSBs incorporating LiCoO_(2)cathodes and acid-treated garnet SSEs,we observe exceptional cyclability and rate capability.Our findings highlight that acid treatment not only establishes a fundamental relationship between SSE surfaces and battery performance but also offers an effective strategy for addressing interfacial challenges in SSBs.

Smog chambers provide a potent approach to explore the secondary organic aerosol formation under varied conditions.This study describes the construction and characterization of a new smog chamber facility for studying the formation mechanisms of gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosol from the photooxidation of volatile organic compounds.The chamber is a 5.4 m^(3) Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene(FEP)Teflon reactor with the potential to perform photooxidation experiments at controlled temperature and relative humidity.Detailed characterizations were conducted for evaluation of stability of environmental parameters,mixing time,background contamination,light intensity,and wall losses of gases and particles.The photolysis rate of NO_(2)(J_(NO2))ranged from(1.02-3.32)×10^(-3)sec^(-1),comparable to the average J_(NO2)in ambient environment.The wall loss rates for NO,NO_(2),and O_(3)were 0.47×10^(-4),0.37×10^(-4),and 1.17×10^(-4)min^(-1),while wall loss of toluene was obsoletely found in a 6 hr test.The particle number wall loss rates are(0.01-2.46)×10^(-3)min^(-1)for 40-350 nm with an average lifetime of more than one day.A series of toluene photooxidation experiments were carried out in absence of NO_xunder dry conditions.The results of the simulation experiments demonstrated that the chamber is well designed to simulate photolysis progress in the atmosphere.

Lignocellulosic nanofibers(LCNFs),implying lignin-containing cellulose fibers,maintain the prop-erties of both lignin and cellulose,which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic,respectively.The pres-ence of hydrophobic lignin in LCNFs is expected to be an economical and attractive option that can improve the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers.Thus,this study was conducted to produce lignin-rich LCNFs from sugar-rich waste obtained from rice husks after acidic pretreat-ment.The LCNFs were produced from the lignin-rich solid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis,which were then incorporated as an additive into a chitosan-based film.The variations in lignin content in the range of approximately 50.6%-66.8%in differently obtained LCNFs gave significantly different optical strengths and mechanical properties.These controllable processes may allow for customized film formation.Additionally,the glucose-rich liquid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis were used as a substrate for ethanol fermentation to achieve total utilization of rice husk biomass waste.In conclusion,the lignin-rich biomass fraction holds promise as a suitable material for chitosan-LCNF film and has the potential to increase the economic feasibility of the biomaterial industry.

Enhanced prediction of anisotropic deformation behavior using machine learning with data augmentation

Mg alloys possess an inherent plastic anisotropy owing to the selective activation of deformation mechanisms depending on the loading condition.This characteristic results in a diverse range of flow curves that vary with a deformation condition.This study proposes a novel approach for accurately predicting an anisotropic deformation behavior of wrought Mg alloys using machine learning(ML)with data augmentation.The developed model combines four key strategies from data science:learning the entire flow curves,generative adversarial networks(GAN),algorithm-driven hyperparameter tuning,and gated recurrent unit(GRU)architecture.The proposed model,namely GAN-aided GRU,was extensively evaluated for various predictive scenarios,such as interpolation,extrapolation,and a limited dataset size.The model exhibited significant predictability and improved generalizability for estimating the anisotropic compressive behavior of ZK60 Mg alloys under 11 annealing conditions and for three loading directions.The GAN-aided GRU results were superior to those of previous ML models and constitutive equations.The superior performance was attributed to hyperparameter optimization,GAN-based data augmentation,and the inherent predictivity of the GRU for extrapolation.As a first attempt to employ ML techniques other than artificial neural networks,this study proposes a novel perspective on predicting the anisotropic deformation behaviors of wrought Mg alloys.

We consider dual Toeplitz operators on the orthogonal complements of the FockSobolev spaces of all nonnegative real orders.First,for symbols in a certain class containing all bounded functions,we study the problem of when an operator which is finite sums of the dual Toeplitz products is compact or zero.Next,for bounded symbols,we construct a symbol map and exhibit a short exact sequence associated with the C^(*)-algebra generated by all dual Toeplitz operators with bounded symbols.
