Evaluation of recurrence in gastric carcinoma: Comparison of contrast-enhanced computed tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography

AIM To compare the value of contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography(CT) and fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) for detecting gastric carcinoma recurrence.METHODS We retrospectively examined data from 2475 patients who underwent both contrast-enhanced abdominal CT and FDG PET/CT for the surveillance of gastric carcinoma curative resection. Patients had an interval of less than 1 mo between their CT and PET/CT scans. Sixty patients who had recurrence were enrolled. Among 1896 patients who did not have recurrence, 60 were selected by simple random sampling. All CT and PET/CT images were reviewed retrospectively by two reviewers blinded to all clinical and pathologic information except curative resection due to gastric carcinoma. RESULTS The pathological stage of the recurrence group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group(P < 0.001). In the 60 patients who had recurrence, there were 79 recurrent lesions. Fortyfour patients had only one location of recurrence, 13 patients had two locations, and 3 patients had three. In the detection of patient-based overall recurrence, no statistically significant differences existed between the two modalities(P = 0.096). However, for peritoneal carcinomatosis, CT had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(96% vs 50%, P = 0.001). Adenocarcinoma was the most common type of gastric carcinoma. On the pathology-based analysis, CT also had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(98% vs 80%, P = 0.035).CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced CT was superior to PET/CT in the detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis and pathologic type of adenocarcinoma.

Multimodal imaging evaluation in staging of rectal cancer

Rectal cancer is a common cancer and a major cause of mortality in Western countries.Accurate staging is essential for determining the optimal treatment strategies and planning appropriate surgical procedures to control rectal cancer.Endorectal ultrasonography(EUS)is suitable for assessing the extent of tumor invasion,particularly in early-stage or superficial rectal cancer cases.In advanced cases with distant metastases,computed tomography(CT)is the primary approach used to evaluate the disease.Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is often used to assess preoperative staging and the circumferential resection margin involvement,which assists in evaluating a patient’s risk of recurrence and their optimal therapeutic strategy.Positron emission tomography(PET)-CT may be useful in detecting occult synchronous tumors or metastases at the time of initial presentation.Restaging after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(CRT)remains a challenge with all modalities because it is difficult to reliably differentiate between the tumor mass and other radiation-induced changes in the images.EUS does not appear to have a useful role in post-therapeutic response assessments.Although CT is most commonly used to evaluate treatment responses,its utility for identifying and following-up metastatic lesions is limited.Preoperative high-resolution MRI in combination with diffusion-weighted imaging,and/or PET-CT could provide valuable prognostic information for rectal cancer patients with locally advanced disease receiving preoperative CRT.Based on these results,we conclude that a combination of multimodal imaging methods should be used to precisely assess the restaging of rectal cancer following CRT.

Intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging for monitoring chemotherapeutic efficacy in gastric cancer

AIM: To assess intravoxel incoherent motion diffusionweighted imaging(IVIM-DWI) for monitoring early efficacy of chemotherapy in a human gastric cancer mouse model.METHODS: IVIM-DWI was performed with 12 b-values(0-800 s/mm2) in 25 human gastric cancer-bearing nude mice at baseline(day 0), and then they were randomly divided into control and 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-d treatment groups(n = 5 per group). The control group underwent longitudinal MRI scans at days 1, 3, 5 and 7, and the treatment groups underwent subsequent MRI scans after a specified 5-fluorouracil/calciumfolinate treatment. Together with tumor volumes(TV), the apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) and IVIM parameters [true water molecular diffusion coefficient(D), perfusion fraction(f) and pseudo-related diffusion coefficient(D*)] were measured. The differences in those parameters from baseline to each measurement(ΔTV%, ΔADC%, ΔD%, Δf% and ΔD*%) were calculated. After image acquisition, tumor necrosis, microvessel density(MVD) and cellular apoptosis were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin(HE), CD31 and terminal-deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated nick end labeling(TUNEL) staining respectively, to confirm the imaging findings. Mann-Whitney test and Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis were performed.RESULTS: The observed relative volume increase(ΔTV%) in the treatment group were significantly smaller than those in the control group at day 5(ΔTV_(treatment)% = 19.63% ± 3.01% and ΔTVcontrol% = 83.60% ± 14.87%, P = 0.008) and day 7(ΔTV_(treatment)% = 29.07% ± 10.01% and ΔTV_(control)% = 177.06% ± 63.00%, P = 0.008). The difference in ΔTV% between the treatment and the control groups was not significant at days 1 and 3 after a short duration of treatment. Increases in ADC in the treatment group(ΔADC%_(treatment), median, 30.10% ± 18.32%, 36.11% ± 21.82%, 45.22% ± 24.36%) were significantly higher compared with the control group(ΔADC%_(control), median, 4.98% ± 3.39%, 6.26% ± 3.08%, 9.24% ± 6.33%) at days 3, 5 and 7(P = 0.008, P = 0.016, P = 0.008, respective

(Hf,Zr)O_(2)offers considerable potential for next-generation semiconductor devices owing to its nonvolatile spontaneous polarization at the nanoscale.However,scaling this material to sub-5 nm thickness poses several challenges,including the formation of an interfacial layer and high trap concentration.In particular,a low-k SiO_(2)interfacial layer is naturally formed when(Hf,Zr)O_(2)films are directly grown on a Si substrate,leading to high depolarization fields and rapid reduction of the remanent polarization.To address these issues,we conducted a study to significantly improve ferroelectricity and switching endurance of(Hf,Zr)O_(2)films with sub-5 nm thicknesses by inserting a TiO_(2)interfacial layer.The deposition of a Ti film prior to Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2)film deposition resulted in a high-k TiO_(2)interfacial layer and prevented the direct contact of Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2)with Si.Our findings show that the high-k TiO_(2)interfacial layer can reduce the SiO_(2)/Si interface trap density and the depolarization field,resulting in a switchable polarization of 60.2μC/cm^(2)for a 5 nm thick Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2)film.Therefore,we propose that inserting a high-k TiO_(2)interfacial layer between the Hf_(0.5)Zr_(0.5)O_(2)film and the Si substrate may offer a promising solution to enhancing the ferroelectricity and reliability of(Hf,Zr)O_(2)grown on the Si substrate and can pave the way for next-generation semiconductor devices with improved performance.

Tailoring local structures of atomically dispersed copper sites for highly selective CO2 electroreduction

Atomically‐dispersed copper sites coordinated with nitrogen‐doped carbon(Cu–N–C)can provide novel possibilities to enable highly selective and active electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reactions.However,the construction of optimal local electronic structures for nitrogen‐coordinated Cu sites(Cu–N_(4))on carbon remains challenging.Here,we synthesized the Cu–N–C catalysts with atomically‐dispersed edge‐hosted Cu–N_(4) sites(Cu–N_(4)C_(8))located in a micropore between two graphitic sheets via a facile method to control the concentration of metal precursor.Edge‐hosted Cu–N_(4)C_(8) catalysts outperformed the previously reported M–N–C catalysts for CO_(2)‐to‐CO conversion,achieving a maximum CO Faradaic efficiency(FECO)of 96%,a CO current density of–8.97 mA cm–2 at–0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE),and over FECO of 90%from–0.6 to–1.0 V versus RHE.Computational studies revealed that the micropore of the graphitic layer in edge‐hosted Cu–N_(4)C_(8) sites causes the d‐orbital energy level of the Cu atom to shift upward,which in return decreases the occupancy of antibonding states in the*COOH binding.This research suggests new insights into tailoring the locally coordinated structure of the electrocatalyst at the atomic scale to achieve highly selective electrocatalytic reactions.

Lignocellulosic nanofibers(LCNFs),implying lignin-containing cellulose fibers,maintain the prop-erties of both lignin and cellulose,which are hydrophobic and hydrophilic,respectively.The pres-ence of hydrophobic lignin in LCNFs is expected to be an economical and attractive option that can improve the thermal and mechanical properties of polymers.Thus,this study was conducted to produce lignin-rich LCNFs from sugar-rich waste obtained from rice husks after acidic pretreat-ment.The LCNFs were produced from the lignin-rich solid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis,which were then incorporated as an additive into a chitosan-based film.The variations in lignin content in the range of approximately 50.6%-66.8%in differently obtained LCNFs gave significantly different optical strengths and mechanical properties.These controllable processes may allow for customized film formation.Additionally,the glucose-rich liquid fractions obtained after pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis were used as a substrate for ethanol fermentation to achieve total utilization of rice husk biomass waste.In conclusion,the lignin-rich biomass fraction holds promise as a suitable material for chitosan-LCNF film and has the potential to increase the economic feasibility of the biomaterial industry.

Mixed-dimensional composite structures using zero-dimensional(0D)quantum dots(QDs)and two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)materials are expected to attract great interest in optoelectronics due to the potential to generate new optical properties.Here,we report on the unique optical characteristics of a devices with mixed dimensional vertically stacked structures based on tungsten diselenide(WSe_(2))/CdSeS QDs monolayer/molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2))(2D/0D/2D).Specifically,it exhibits an ambipolar photoresponse characteristic,with a negative photoresponse observed in the 400-600 nm wavelength range and a positive photoresponse appeared at 700 nm wavelength.It resulted in the high negative responsivity of up to 52.22 mA·W^(−1)under 400 nm,which is 163 times higher than that of the photodetector without CdSeS QDs.We also demonstrated the negative photoresponse,which could be due to increased carrier collision probability and non-radiative recombination.Device modeling and simulation reveal that Auger recombination among the types of non-radiative recombination is the main cause of negative photocurrent generation.Consequently,we discovered ambipolar photoresponse near a specific wavelength corresponding to the energy of quantum dots.Our study revealed interesting phenomenon in the mixed low-dimensional stacked structure and paved the way to exploit it for the development of innovative photodetection materials as well as for optoelectronic applications.

Metal-halide perovskites have garnered considerable research attention as highly efficient light emitters in recent years due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties with remarkable tunability and excellent solution processabilities.Substantial advancements have been achieved in the development of novel halide perovskites,and the exploitations of these materials in lightemitting devices.This review comprehensively outlines recent breakthroughs in metal-halide perovskites,encompassing the rational design of perovskite materials with tunable light emission properties,the controllable growth of single crystal for a deeper understanding of their structure-property relationships,as well as the fundamental insights into the photophysics and carrier dynamics in perovskite systems.Additionally,it provides an overview of recent applications of perovskite materials in high-performance light-emitting diodes(LEDs)and lasers.
