Korea imports about 97% of its energy resources as its available energy resources are extremely limited. Thus, the role of nuclear power in electricity generation is expected to become more important in future years. A fast reactor system is one of the most promising options for electricity generation with an efficient utilization of uranium resources and a reduction of radioactive wastes. Based on the experiences gained during the development of the conceptual designs for KALIMER （Korea advanced liquid metal reactor）, the KAERI （Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute） is currently developing advanced SFR （sodium cooled fast reactor） design concepts that can better meet the Gen IV （Generation IV） technology goals. The long-term advanced SFR development plan will be carried out toward the construction of an advanced SFR demonstration plant by 2028. Advanced concept design studies and the development of the advanced SFR technologies necessary for its commercialization and basic key technologies carried out by KAERI are included in this paper.

An 81-year-old man presented with epigastric pain and weight loss for one month. He had a past history of pulmonary tuberculosis, 10 years ago. We performed a gastroscopy, which showed a linear depressed whitish gastric ulcer scar (0.8 cm in length) in the posterior wall of the prepyloric antrum. The result of biopsy was reported as squamous epithelium. Immunohistochemical staining using an antibody to high molecular weight cytokeratin (HMC) revealed positive staining in the squamous epithelium. Two years later, the lesion was followed up. The lesion remained at same site endoscopically, but no squamous epithelium could be seen microscopically.

mitochondrial-targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensor molecules. Among them, the most widely applied mitochondrial targeting moiety is triphenylphosphonium(TPP), which is a delocalized cationic lipid that readily accumulates and penetrates through the mitochondrial membrane due to the highly negative mitochondrial membrane potential. Other moieties, including short peptides,dequalinium, guanidine, rhodamine, and F16, are also known to be promising mitochondrial targeting agents. Direct conjugation of mitochondrial targeting moieties to anticancer drugs, antioxidants and sensors results in increased cytotoxicity, anti-oxidizing activity and sensing activity, respectively,compared with their non-targeting counterparts, especially in drug-resistant cells. Although many mitochondria-targeted anticancer drug conjugates have been investigated in vitro and in vivo, further clinical studies are still needed. On the other hand, several mitochondria-targeting antioxidants have been analyzed in clinical phases I, II and III trials, and one conjugate has been approved for treating eye disease in Russia. There are numerous ongoing studies of mitochondria-targeted sensors.

AIM： To review the surgical outcomes in terms of the surgical indications and relevant prognostic factors. METHODS： Sixteen patients underwent therapeutic lung surgery between March 1999 and May 2006. The observation period was terminated on May 31, 2007. The surgical outcomes and the clinicopathological factors were compared. RESULTS： There was no mortality or major morbidity encountered in this study. The mean follow-up period after metastasectomy was 26.7 ＋ 28.2 （range： 1-99 mo）, and the median survival time was 20 mo. The 1- and 5-year survival rates were 56% and 26%, respectively. At the end of the follow-up, 1 patient died from hepatic failure without recurrence, 6 died from hepatic failure with a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）, and 4 died from recurrent HCC with cachexia. Among several clinical factors, Kaplan Meier analysis revealed as a treatment for the that liver transplantation primary lesion, grade of cell differentiation, and negative evidence HBV infection were independent predictive factors. On Cox＇s proportional hazard model, there were no significant factors affecting survival after pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with HCC. CONCLUSION： A metastasectomy should be performed before other treatments in selected patients, Although not significant, patients with liver transplantation of a primary HCC survived longer, Liver transplantation might be the most beneficial modality that can offer patients better survival, A multi- institutional and collaborative study would be needed for identifying clinical prognostic factors predicting survival in patients with HCC and lung metastasis.

Irradiation Testing of Coated Particle Fuel at HANARO

TRISO （Tri-structural iso-tropic）-coated particle fuel is being developed to support the development of a VHTR （very high temperature reactor） in Korea. From August 2013, the first irradiation testing of coated particle fuel was begun to demonstrate and qualify TRISO fuel for use in the VHTR in HANARO （high-flux advanced neutron application reactor） at KAERI （Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute）. This experiment is currently undergoing under an atmosphere of a mixed inert gas without on-line temperature monitoring and control combined with on-line fission product monitoring of the sweep gas. The irradiation device contains two test rods, one contains nine fuel compacts and the other five compacts and eight graphite specimens. Each compact has 263 coated particles. After a peak bum-up of about 4% and a peak fast neutron fluence of about 1.7 × 1021 n/cm2, PIE （post irradiation examination） will be carried out at KAERI＇s irradiated material examination facility. This paper describes the characteristics of coated particle fuels, and the design of the test rod and irradiation device for the coated particle fuels, and discusses the technical results of irradiation testing at HANARO.

Fatigue Performance of Precast FRP-Concrete Composite Deck with Long Span

The fatigue performance of precast FRP-concrete composite (PFC) deck is evaluated. This type of deck enables a reduction of the weight by 30% compared to conventional reinforced concrete decks owing to the composition of a hollow FRP panel with concrete. Therefore, the application of such deck in cable-stayed bridge will reduce effectively the weight of the superstructure leading also to substantial savings in the materials required for the superstructure and substructure and, therefore, achieve significant improvement of the economic efficiency. Static, pulsating fatigue and rolling fatigue tests were carried out on 4 m × 4 m precast FRP-concrete composite decks. All the specimens did not fail even after 2 million fatigue cycles, and the subsequent static tests conducted on these specimens verified that all the design criteria were satisfied. These experimental results demonstrated that the PFC deck developed in this research secures sufficient performances for future applications for cable-stayed bridges.

AIM： TO investigate whether krüppel-like factor 6 （KLF6） plays an important role in the development and/or progression of colorectal cancer. METHODS： A total of 123 formalin-fixed and paraffinembedded colorectal cancer specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarray for the expression of KLF6 protein. The specimens were collected over a 3-year period in the laboratories at our large teaching hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The correlation of KLF6 expression with clinicopathologic parameters was analyzed by χ^2 test and Bartholomew test. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium showed weak to moderate expression of KLF6, whereas reduced KLF 6 expression or loss of KLF6 expression was seen in 45 （36.6%） of the 123 colorectal carcinoma specimens. Interestingly, aberrant expression of KLF6 was detected in 25 （43.1%） of 58 cases with metastasis to regional lymph node and in 31 （47.0%） of 66 tumors more than 5 cm in size. Statistically, loss of KLF6 expression was significantly associated with tumor size （P〈0.05）. However, there was no significant correlation between KLF6 expression and Dukes＇ stage （Bartholomew test, P〉 0.05）, tumor location and lymph node metastasis （χ^2 test, P〉0.05）.CONCLUSION： Loss of KLF6 expression may be a common and early event in colorectal carcinogenesis.

This paper examines the effect of freezing and thawing on the coarse sand coating chosen to achieve the composition of FRP and concrete in FRP-concrete composite deck. Push-out test specimens with dimensions of 100 × 100 × 450 mm were subjected to repeated freeze-thaw cycles under wet conditions ranging from -18℃± 2℃ to 4℃ ± 2℃. The failure strength of the interface and the deformation of FRP at failure exhibited by the specimens that experienced 300 freezing-thawing cycles showed a difference of merely 5% compared to those of the specimens that were not subjected to freeze-thaw. This indicates that coarse sand coating is not affected by freezing-thawing cycles and the FRP-concrete composite deck owns sufficient applicability in terms of durability against freezing-thawing.

This paper investigates experimentally the deformation characteristics of the mono strand anchor head used in prestressed concrete bridge. Since the strains measurable in the anchor head are the axial and hoop strains, the deformation characteristics of the anchor head are examined by measuring these strains at various positions and according to the jacking force exerted on the pre-stressing strand. Moreover, the possibility to estimate the jacking force acting in the tendon based upon the measured strains and the corresponding error are evaluated.
