Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells promote regeneration of crush-injured rat sciatic nerves

Several studies have demonstrated that human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells can promote neural regeneration following brain injury. However, the therapeutic effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells in guiding peripheral nerve regeneration remain poorly understood. This study was designed to investigate the effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells on neural regeneration using a rat sciatic nerve crush injury model. Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells （1 ~ 106） or a PBS control were injected into the crush-injured segment of the sciatic nerve. Four weeks after cell injection, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and tyrosine kinase receptor B mRNA expression at the lesion site was increased in comparison to control. Furthermore, sciatic function index, Fluoro Gold-labeled neuron counts and axon density were also significantly increased when compared with control. AIM:To deduce strategic guidelines of gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (MALTOMA) by evaluating the long-term outcome of patients in respect to various treatment modalities. METHODS:A total of 55 patients with MALTOMA from May 1992 to August 2002 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS:Complete remission was obtained in 24 (82.8%) of 29 patients treated with anti Helicobacter pylori (Hpylori) regimen *** duration to reach complete remission was 12 months (85 percentile,2-33 months).Five patients showed complete remission with radiation therapy (26-86 months).Two of them were Hpyloritreatment failure cases. CONCLUSION:Hpylorieradication is an effective primary treatment option for low grade MALTOMA and radiation therapy could be considered in patients with no evidence of Hpyloriinfection or who do not respond to Hpylorieradication therapy 12 months after successful eradication.

Giant choledocholithiasis treated by mechanical lithotripsy using a gastric bezoar basket

Mechanical lithotripsy （ML） is usually considered as a standard treatment option for large bile duct stones. However, it is impossible to retrieve oversized stones because the conventional lithotripsy basket may not be able to grasp the stone. However, there is no es- tablished endoscopic extraction method for such gi- ant stone removal. We describe a case of successful extraction of a 4-cm large stone using a gastric bezoar basket. A 78-year-old woman had suffered from upper abdominal pain for 20 d. Contrast-enhanced computed tomogram revealed a 4-cm single stone in the distal common bile duct （CBD）. Endoscopic stone retraction was decided upon and endoscopic papillary balloon dilation was performed using a large balloon. An at- tempt to capture the stone using a standard lithotripsy basket failed due to the large stone size. Subsequently, we used a gastric bezoar basket to successfully capturethe stone. The stone was fragmented into small pieces and extracted. The stone was completely removed after two sessions of endoscopic retrograde cholangio- pancreatography; each of which took 30 rain. No com- plications occurred during or after the procedure. The patient was fully recovered and discharged on day 11 of hospitalization. ML using a gastric bezoar basket is a safe and effective retrieval method in select cases, and is considered as an alternative nonoperative option for the management of difficult CBD stones.

Pre-operative predictive factors for gallbladder cholesterol polyps using conventional diagnostic imaging

AIM： To determine the clinical data that might be useful for differentiating benign from malignant gallbladder （GB） polyps by comparing radiological methods, including abdominal ultrasonography （US） and computed tomography （CT） scanning, with postoperative pathology findings. METHODS： Fifty-nine patients underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for a GB polyp of around 10 ram. They were divided into two groups, one with cholesterol polyps and the other with non-cholesterol polyps. Clinical features such as gender, age, symptoms, size and number of polyps, the presence of a GB stone, the radiologically measured maximum diameter of the polyp by US and CT scanning, and the measurements of diameter from postoperative pathology were recorded for comparative analysis. RESULTS： Fifteen of the 41 cases with cholesterol polyps （36.6%） were detected with US but not CT scanning, whereas all 18 non-cholesterol polyps were observed using both methods. In the cholesterol polyp group, the maximum measured diameter of the polyp was smaller by CT scan than by ***, the discrepancy between those two scanning measurements was greater than for the non- cholesterol polyp group. CONCLUSION： The clinical signs indicative of a cholesterol polyp include：（1） a polyp observed by US but not observable by CT scanning, （2） a smaller diameter on the CT scan compared to US, and （3） a discrepancy in its maximum diameter between US and CT measurements. In addition, US and the CT scan had low accuracy in predicting the polyp diameter compared to that determined by postoperative pathology.

Effect of gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics on peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis

AIM: To investigate the effect of gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics on peritonitis development in peritoneal dialysis(PD) ***: This was a single-center, retrospective study. The medical records of 398 PD patients were collected from January 2000 to September 2012 and analyzed to compare patients with at least one episode of peritonitis(peritonitis group, group A) to patients who never had peritonitis(no peritonitis group, group B). All peritonitis episodes were analyzed to compare peritonitis caused by enteric organisms and peritonitis caused by non-enteric ***: Among the 120 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 61 patients had at least one episode ofperitonitis and 59 patients never experienced peritonitis. Twenty-four of 61 patients(39.3%) in group A and 15 of 59 patients(25.4%) in group B used gastric acid suppressants. Only the use of H2-blocker(H2B) was associated with an increased risk of PD-related peritonitis; the use of proton pump inhibitors, other antacids, and prokinetics was not found to be a significant risk factor for PD-related peritonitis. A total of 81 episodes of peritonitis were divided into enteric peritonitis(EP) or non-enteric peritonitis, depending on the causative organism, and gastric acid suppressants and prokinetics did not increase the risk of EP in PD ***: The use of H2B showed a trend for an increased risk of overall PD-related peritonitis, although further studies are required to clarify the effects of drugs on PD-related peritonitis.

Microstructure and mechanical property of A356 based composite by friction stir processing

Friction stir processing （FSP） was used to incorporate SiC particles into the matrix of A356 Al alloy to form composite material. Constant tool rotation speed of 1800 r/min and travel speed of 127 mm/min were used in this study. The base metal （BM） shows the hypoeutectic Al-Si dendrite structure. The microstructure of the stir zone （SZ） is very different from that of the BM. The eutectic Si and SiC particles are dispersed homogeneously in primary Al solid solution. The thermo-mechanically affected zone （TMAZ）, where the original microstructure is greatly deformed, is characterized by dispersed eutectic Si and SiC particles aligned along the rotational direction of the tool. The hardness of the SZ shows higher value than that of the BM because some defects are remarkably reduced and the eutectic Si and SiC particles are dispersed over the SZ.

The below-cloud aerosol scavenging process by precipitation is one of the most important mechanisms to remove aerosols from the *** to its complexity and dependence on both aerosol and raindrop sizes,wet scavenging process has been poorly treated,especially during the removal of fine *** makes the numerical simulation of below-cloud scavenging in large-scale aerosolmodels *** consider the slip effects of submicron particles,a simplified expression for the diffusion scavenging was developed by approximating the Cunningham slip correction *** derived analytic solution was parameterized as a simple power function of rain intensity under the assumption of the lognormal size distribution of *** resultant approximated expression was compared to the observed data and the results of previous studies including a 3D atmospheric chemical transport model *** with the default GEOS-Chem coefficient of 0.00106R0.61 and the observation-based coefficient of 0.0144R0.9268,the coefficient of a and b in∧m=aRb spread in the range of 0.0002-0.1959 for a and 0.3261-0.525 for b over a size distribution of GSD of 1.3–2.5 and a geometric mean diameter of 0.01-2.5μ***,this study showed that the scavenging coefficient varies widely by orders of magnitude according to the size distribution of particles and rain *** study also demonstrated that the obtained simplified expression could consider the theoretical approach of aerosol *** proposed analytic approach showed that results can be effectively applied for reduced computational burden in atmospheric modeling.

Short-term and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic vs open ileocolic resection in patients with Crohn's disease: Propensityscore matching analysis

The conversion of methane to olefins,aromatics,and hydrogen(MTOAH)can be used to stably obtain hydrocarbons when the effect of the catalytic surface is optimized from the reaction engineering *** this study,Fe/Si C catalysts were packed into a quartz tube *** catalytic surfaces of Si C and the impregnated Fe species decreased the apparent activation energies(E_a)of methane consumption in the blank reactor between 965 and 1020℃.Consequently,the hydrocarbon yield increased by 2.4times at 1020℃.Based on the model reactions of ethane,ethylene,and acetylene mixed with hydrogen in the range of 500-1020℃,an excess amount of Fe in the reactor favored the C-C coupling reaction over the selective hydrogenation of acetylene;consequently,coke formation was favored over the hydrogenation *** gas-phase reactions and catalyst properties were optimized to increase hydrocarbon yields while reducing coke *** 0.2Fe catalyst-packed reactor(0.26 wt%Fe)resulted in a hydrocarbon yield of 7.1%and a coke selectivity of<2%when the ratio of the void space of the postcatalyst zone to the catalyst space was adjusted to be≥*** on these findings,the facile approach of decoupling the reaction zone between the catalyst surface and the gas-phase reaction can provide insights into catalytic reactor design,thereby facilitating the scale-up from the laboratory to the commercial scale.
