Long-term outcomes after stenting as a"bridge to surgery"for the management of acute obstruction secondary tocolorectal cancer

Obstructive symptoms are present in 8% of cases at the time of initial diagnosis in cases of colorectal cancer. Emergency surgery has been classically considered the treatment of choice in these patients. However, in the majority of studies, emergency colorectal surgery is burdened with higher morbidity and mortality rates than elective surgery, and many patients require temporal colostomy which deteriorates their quality of life and becomes permanent in 10%-40% of cases. The aim of stenting by-pass to surgery is to transform emergency surgery into elective surgery in order to improve surgical results, obtain an accurate tumoral staging and detection of synchronous lesions, stabilization of comorbidities and performance of laparoscopic surgery. Immediate results were more favourable in patients who were stented concerning primary anastomosis, permanent stoma, wound infection and overall morbidity, having the higher surgical risk patients the greater benefit. However, some findings laid out the possible implication of stenting in long-term results of oncologic treatment. perforation after stenting is related to tumoral recurrence. In studies with perforation rates above 8%, higher recurrences rates in young patients and lower disease free survival have been shown. On the other hand, after stenting the number of removed lymph nodes in the surgical specimen is larger, patients can receive adjuvant chemotherapy earlier and in a greater percentage and the number of patients who can be surgically treated with laparoscopic surgery is larger. Finally, there are no consistent studies able to demonstrate that one strategy is superior to the other in terms of oncologic benefits. At present, it would seem wise to assume a higher initial complication rate in young patients without relevant comorbidities and to accept the risk of local recurrence in old patients(> 70 years) or with high surgical risk(ASA Ⅲ/Ⅳ).

Rehabilitation of degraded areas in northeastern patagonia, Argentina: Effects of environmental conditions and plant functional traits on performance of native woody species

Degradation processes affect a vast area of arid and semi-arid lands around the world and damage the environment and people′s health. Degradation processes are driven by human productive activities that cause direct and indirect effects on natural resources, such as species extinction at regional scale, reduction and elimination of vegetation cover, soil erosion, etc. In this context, ecological rehabilitation is an important tool to recover key aspects of the degraded ecosystem. Rehabilitation trials rely on the use of native plant species with characteristics that allow them to obtain high survival and growth rates. The aim of this work was to assess the survival and growth of native woody species in degraded areas of northeastern patagonia and relate them to plant functional traits and environmental variables. We observed high early and late survival rates, and growth rates in prosopis flexuosa DC. var. depressa F.A. Roig and Schinus johnstonii F.A. Barkley, and low values in Condalia microphylla Cav. and Geoffroea decorticans(Gillies ex Hook. & Arn.) Burkart. Early survival rates were positively associated with specific leaf area(SLA) and precipitation, but negatively associated with wood density, the maximum mean temperature of the warmest month and the minimum mean temperature of the coldest month. Late survival rates were positively associated with SLA and soil organic matter, but negatively associated with plant height and precipitation. The temperature had a positive effect on late survival rates once the plants overcame the critical period of the first summer after they were transplanted to the field. prosopis flexuosa and S. johnstonii were the most successful species in our study. This could be due to their functional traits that allow these species to acclimatize to the local environment. Determination and(Re)parametrization of Rational Developable Surfaces

The developable surface is an important surface in computer aided design, geometric modeling and industrial manufactory. It is often given in the standard parametric form, but it can also be in the implicit form which is commonly used in algebraic geometry. Not all algebraic developable surfaces have rational parametrizations. In this paper, the authors focus on the rational developable surfaces. For a given algebraic surface, the authors first determine whether it is developable by geometric inspection, and then give a rational proper parametrization in the affrmative case. For a rational parametric surface, the authors also determine the developability and give a proper reparametrization for the developable surface.

Microfluidics has demonstrated high versatility in the analysis of in-flow particles and can even achieve mechanical properties measurements of biological cells by applying hydrodynamic ***,there is currently no available technique that enables the direct measurement and tracking of these hydrodynamic forces acting on a flowing *** this work,we introduce a novel method for the direct measurement of the hydrodynamic force actuating on an in-flow particle based on the analysis of the induced resonance changes of suspended microchannel resonators(SMRs).This hydrodynamic force sensitivity depends on the device used;therefore,we considered the geometry and materials to advance this dependency on the SMR resonance frequency.

Background:The presence of a single umbilical artery(SUA)is a fetal soft marker of congenital *** the most common related malformations,there are cardiological,nephrourological and digestive anomalies,most of which are considered to have a vascular *** is an association between increased incidence of intrauterine growth retardation and adverse perinatal indicators,but whether this association is due to related anomalies or isolated SUA(SUA)is ***:We reviewed 96 cases of iSUA and non-isolated SUA(niSUA),diagnosed in a period of two years in a referral hospital for high-risk *** on prenatal explorations,including fetal ultrasonography and karyotyping,were *** was diagnosed when no malformations were found prenatally or in postnatal ***:Sixty-six newborns(68.8%)had no other anomalies and 30(31.3%)presented with a variety of malformations including heart diseases,urophaties,digestive,nervous and musculoskeletal disorders,genetic abnormalities and complex *** and nephrourological abnormalities were found to be the most frequent association with a SUA(both in 23.8%of malformed SUA newborns).Intrauterine growth restriction was not higher in iSUA newborns than in a normal *** allowed optimal prenatal diagnosis in most ***:The prognosis of the fetus with a SUA is determined by the presence of other malformations observed by an expert *** no other findings are made,only a routine physical examination should be performed in newborns,but no other complementary examinations are required.

A Symbolic-Numeric Approach for parametrizing Ruled Surfaces

Chemical oxygen demand reduction in coffee wastewater through chemical flocculation and advanced oxidation processes

The removal of the natural organic matter present in coffee processing wastewater through chemical coagulation-flocculation and advanced oxidation processes （AOp） had been studied. The effectiveness of the removal of natural organic matter using commercial flocculants and UV/H202, UV/O3 and UV/H2O2/O3 processes was determined under acidic conditions. For each of these processes, different operational conditions were explored to optimize the treatment efficiency of the coffee wastewater. Coffee wastewater is characterized by a high chemical oxygen demand （COD） and low total suspended solids. The outcomes of coffee wastewater treatment using coagulation-flocculation and photodegradation processes were assessed in terms of reduction of COD, color, and turbidity. It was found that a reduction in COD of 67% could be realized when the coffee wastewater was treated by chemical coagulation-flocculation with lime and coagulant T-1. When coffee wastewater was treated by coagulation-flocculation in combination with UV/H2O2, a COD reduction of 86% was achieved, although only after prolonged UV irradiation. Of the three advanced oxidation processes considered, UV/H2O2, UV/O3 and UV/H2O2/O3, we found that the treatment with UV/H2O2/O3 was the most effective, with an efficiency of color, turbidity and further COD removal of 87%, when applied to the flocculated coffee wastewater.

A novel surface mesh deformation method for handling wing-fuselage intersections

This paper describes a method for mesh adaptation in the presence of intersections, such as wing-fuselage. Automatic optimization tools, using Computational Fluid Dynamics（CFD） simulations, face the problem to adapt the computational grid upon deformations of the boundary surface. When mesh regeneration is not feasible, due to the high cost to build up the computational grid, mesh deformation techniques are considered a cheap approach to adapt the mesh to changes on the geometry. Mesh adaptation is a well-known subject in the literature; however, there is very little work which deals with moving intersections. Without a proper treatment of the intersections,the use of automatic optimization methods for aircraft design is limited to individual *** proposed method takes advantage of the CAD description, which usually comes in the form of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines（NURBS） patches. This paper describes an algorithm to recalculate the intersection line between two parametric surfaces. Then, the surface mesh is adapted to the moving intersection in parametric coordinates. Finally, the deformation is propagated through the volumetric mesh. The proposed method is tested with the DLR F6 wing-body configuration.
