In this paper,we propose a new prototype model of a micro pump using ICPF(Ionic Conducting Polymer Film)actuator as the servo *** micro pump consists of two active one- way valves that make use of the same ICPF *** overall size of this micro pump prototype is 12mm in diameter and 20mm in *** actuating mechanism is as follows:(1)The ICPF actuator as the diaphragm is bent into anode side by application of *** the volume of the pump chamber increases,resulting in the inflow of liquid from the inlet to the chamber.(2)By changing the current direction,the volume of the pump chamber decreases,resulting in the liquid flow from the chamber to the outlet.(3)The ICPF actuator is put on a sine voltage,the micro pump provides liquid flow from the inlet to the outlet *** of the micro pump is *** experimental results indicate that the micro pump has the satisfactory responses.

The bender element testing features its in-plane directivity, which allows using bender elements to measure the shear wave velocities in a wider range of in-plane configurations besides the standard tip-to-tip alignment. This paper proposed a novel bender element testing technique for measuring the horizontal shear wave velocity of soils, where the bender elements are surface- mounted and the axes of the source and receiver elements are parallel to each other. The preliminary tests performed on model ground of silica sand showed that, by properly determining the travel distance and time of the shear waves, the surface-mounted bender elements can perform as accurately as the conventional "tip-to-tip" configuration. Potentially, the present system provides a promising nondestructive tool for characterizing geomaterials and site conditions both in laboratory and in the fields.

New method for long-term monitoring of intragastric pH

AIM: Consecutive monitoring of intragastric pH using the Bravo? capsule. METHODS: We put threads through a Bravo? capsule and then affixed it to the gastric wall by endoscopic hemoclipping in seven subjects. Study data were uploaded to a computer via Datalink every 48 h. In this way,repeated monitoring of intragastric pH was undertaken. RESULTS: All subjects were able to monitor gastric pH over a 1-wk period,and five for > 2 wk. No complications were encountered during the monitoring. After pH monitoring,we safely retrieved the capsule endoscopically. CONCLUSION: Clipping a Bravo? capsule onto the gastric wall enabled long-term intragastric pH monitoring. This is a methodological report of pH monitoring over a period of > 2 wk.

Robots play an important role in underwater monitoring and recovery operations, such as pollution detection, submarine sampling and data collection, video mapping, and object recovery in dangerous places. However, regular-sized robots may not be suitable for applications in some restricted underwater environments. Accordingly, in previous research we designed several novel types of bio-inspired microrobots using Ionic Polymer Metal Composite （IPMC） and Shape Memory Alloy （SMA） ac- tuators. These microrobots possess some attributes of compact structure, multi-functionality, flexibility, and precise positioning. However, they lack the attributes of long endurance, stable high speed, and large load capacity necessary for real-world appli- cations. To overcome these disadvantages, we proposed a mother-son robot system, composed of several microrobots as sons and a newly designed amphibious spherical robot as the mother. Inspired by amphibious turtles, the mother robot was designed with a spherical body and four legs with two Degrees of Freedom （DOF）. It is actuated by four vectored water-jet propellers and ten servomotors, and it is capable of walking on land and cruising underwater. We analysed the mother robot＇s walking and underwater cruising mechanisms, constructed a prototype, and carried out a series of experiments to evaluate its amphibious motions. Good motion performance was observed in the experiments.

AIM： To investigate the effect of polaprezinc on cellular damage induced by hydrogen peroxide （H202） in human colon CaCo2 cells. METHODS： CaCo2 cells were treated with polaprezinc （10-100 pmol/L） for 6 h. After polaprezinc treatment, the cells were incubated with H202 （20μmol/L） for 1 h. Cell viability was measured by MTT assay. Western blot analysis for heat shock protein （HSP） 27 and HSP72 in the cells was performed. Moreover, cells were pretreated with quercetin （200 μmol/L）, an inhibitor of HSP synthesis, 2 h before polaprezinc treatment, and cell viability and the expression of HSP27 and 72 were assessed in these cells. RESULTS： Polaprezinc significantly protected CaCo2 cells from cell damage induced by H2O2, and up-regulated the expressions of HSP27 and HSP72 in the cells （10, 30 and 100 pmol/L of polaprezinc; 35.0% ± 7.7%, 58.3% ± 14.6% and 64.2% ± 8.2%, respectively. P 〈 0.01 versus polaprezinc-nontreated cells; 6.0% ± 4.4%）. Quercetin inhibited the up-regulation of HSP27 and HSP72 by polaprezinc and diminished the protective effect of polaprezinc against H2O2-caused injury in the cells. CONCLUSION： Polaprezinc is a useful therapeutic agent for treatment of colitis and its effects depend on the function of cytoprotective HSP in colon.

We have developed stacked nanocarbon polymer actuators that are composed of several nanocarbon polymer actuator films using nonwoven fabric as insulation *** nonwoven fabric prepared through electrospinning methods has extremely-low-density structures,which do not significantly prevent the motions of each nanocarbon actuator ***,stacking several thin nanocarbon polymer actuators using nonwoven fabric as insulation layers is expected to increase generated force without decreasing the displacement of a one-layer *** have prepared stacked actuators with one,two,three,four,and seven layers using this *** displacement and blocking force of these actuators are measured and compared with those of one-layer actuators of different *** is weakly dependent on the thickness of the actuator films of the stacked *** the contrary,it decreases considerably as the thickness of the actuator film of the one-layer actuator *** both cases,blocking force is proportional to the thickness of actuator *** have developed a stacked actuator model based on a trilayer actuator model and confirmed the experimental results using the model.

Schwannomas are peripheral nerve tumors that are typically solitary and *** diagnosis is largely based on surgically resected ***,a number of case reports have indicated that retroperitoneal schwannomas could be diagnosed with endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA).We report the diagnosis of three cases of schwannoma using *** were two males and one female,ages 22,40,and 46 years,respectively,all of whom were *** findings showed well-circumscribed round ***,as the tumors could not be diagnosed using these findings alone,EUS-FNA was ***-eosin staining of the resulting tissue fragments revealed bland spindle cells with nuclear *** was no disparity in nuclear *** revealed S-100 protein positivity and all cases were diagnosed as ***-67 indexes were 3%-15%,2%-3%,and 3%,*** case showed any signs of *** most schwannomas are benign tumors and seldom become malignant,we observed these patients without *** tumors demonstrated no enlargement and no change in *** are almost always benign and can be observed following diagnosis by EUS-FNA.

A New Type of Hybrid Fish-like Microrobot

In order to develop a new type of fish-like microrobot with swimming, walking, and floating motions, in our past research, we developed a hybrid microrobot actuated by ionic conducting polymer film （ICPF） actuators. But the microrobot had some problems in walking and floating motions. In this paper, we propose a concept of hybrid microrobot （see Fig. 1）. The microrobot is actuated by a pair of caudal fins, a base with legs and an array of artificial swim bladders. We have developed a prototype of the base with legs and one artificial swim bladder, respectively, and carried out experiments for evaluating their characteristics. Experimental results show the base with legs can realize walking speed of 6 mm/s and rotating speed of 7.1 degrees/s respectively, and the prototype of the artificial swim bladder has a maximum floatage of 2.6 mN. The experimental results also indicate that the microrobot has some advantages, such as walking motion with 2 degrees of freedom, the walking ability on rough surface （sand paper）, the controllable floatage, etc. This kind of fish-like microrobot is expected for industrial and medical applications.
