Establishing knowledge of local communities r.gar.ing the potential health r.sks of illegal bushmeat hunting and its r.lated pr.ctices is among the essential means to developing effective conser.ation and public health pr.gr.ms. To r.veal the under.tanding of the local people r.gar.ing the potential health r.sks of bushmeat consumption and handling of wildlife pr.ducts, we used a semi-str.ctur.d questionnair. to sur.ey 261 households in eight villages located adjacent to the wester. par. of Nyer.r. National Par.. Also, we inter.iewed eight key infor.ants, including conser.ation per.onnel and veter.nar. officer., in the study ar.a. The pr.por.ion of local people who wer. unawar. that handling of wildlife pr.ducts and bushmeat consumption wer. r.sky behaviour. towar.s acquir.ng zoonotic diseases was slightly higher.(57%) than the pr.por.ion of r.spondents who wer. awar. of the likely r.sks of zoonotic diseases fr.m the pr.ctices. After.all, the major.ty (83%) of local people admitted having come into contact with wildlife pr.ducts, while over.70% r.por.ed having consumed bushmeat. We found that local communities living closer.to the par. boundar.es (r.likelihood of contacting wildlife pr.ducts, and that community member. who have lived in the ar.a for.mor. than ten year. have exper.enced mor. contact with wildlife pr.ducts than immigr.nts. Mor.over. the age of inhabitants and length of stay wer. found to be the most significant factor. in deter.ining the likelihood of bushmeat consumption. Most people seemed to pr.fer.bushmeat to domestic meat, ar.uing that bushmeat is far.mor. flavor.ul, tender. not tainted with chemicals, and has less fat, making it safer. Our.study demonstr.ted that local communities par.icipate in r.sky pr.ctices without contemplating the health consequences that could emer.e should a zoonotic disease outbr.ak occur. Among other.str.tegies, we r.commended conser.ation and public health institutions to incr.ase awar.ness campaig
