Radiation Dose from CT-Scan of childhood’s Head: Results of the First Ivorian Survey in a Single Study Site

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the level of X-ray doses used in childhood’s head as Local Diagnostic Reference Levels (LDRLs) in computed tomography (CT) at a university hospital in Côte d’Ivoire. The Diagnostic Reference Level (DRL) have been set up and used to prevent unusually high radiation doses used in radiology departments and is therefore an optimization tool for practices and procedures in medical X-ray imaging for the radiation protection of patients. Methods: A prospective study of volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) was performed on images of childhood’s head obtained from a CT-scanner of 64 bars equipped with the tube current modulation capability and manufactured by Hitachi Medical System. 122 CT-scan data from 55 childhood’s head were analyzed. The scan data were stratified in four age groups: Results: The 75th percentile of CTDIvol and DLP (set as LDRL) obtained with respect to the stratified age groups are: 22.5 mGy and 452.5 mGy∙cm, 27.7 mGy and 690.6 mGy∙cm, 28 mGy and 722.4 mGy∙cm, 33.6 mGy and 736.8 mGy∙cm respectively. These outcome values increase with respect to the age of pediatric patients and are comparable to DRLs values obtained internationally. Conclusions: Obtaining good image quality while using low dose in children’s head computed tomography for radiation protection require to setup more surveys in Côte d’Ivoire for regional and national DRL. We proposed through this survey LDRLs in terms of CTDIvol and DLP, comparable to international DRLs values. This survey will be strengthened by additional surveys in order to obtain national DRLs for the radiation protection of the child patient in Côte d’Ivoire.

The increase in cytosolic calcium concentration has been shown to play an important role in vital cellular functions such as muscle contraction, cell secretion, oocyte fertilization, nerve conduction, embryo development and apoptosis in animals, plants and microbes, and in the invasion of mammalian cells by parasites, bacteria, and viruses. Therefore, live cell imaging of increases in cytosolic calcium concentration in cellular compartments has been investigated intensively. Multiple calcium imaging systems are now available commercially, but when it comes to deciding which model to purchase, it is often hard to obtain enough information for an optimal setup. In this paper, a comparison was made among four fluorescent detection/imaging devices for the detection of cytosolic calcium oscillations induced in rat pancreatic acinar cells by cholecystokinin and in hepatocytes by phenylephrine. Detailed equipment setup, differences in data acquisition and analysis, and side effects of the excitation light on live cells were analyzed. A list of important factors that should be considered in choosing the optimal equipment are recommended, which will be useful for users of such devices in the future.

The interaction between Fusarium root rot and 4 allelochemicals in asparagus seedlings was estimated in vitro to clarify the relationship between biotic and abiotic factors in asparagus decline. In in vitro culture of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. asparagi (Foa) with or without addition of 4 allelochemicals (caffeic acid, ferulic acid, quercetin, malic acid;0.01%, 0.1%, w/v) using Czapec-Dox media, Foa propagation was suppressed in all the treatments. The degree of suppression became higher in 0.1% than 0.01% among all the allelochemicals. As for the axenic culture of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L., “Welcome”) seedlings with the 4 allelochemicals, dry weight of both shoots and roots became lower compared to control in 0.1% and 0.01% of caffeic acid, 0.1% ferulic acid, 0.01% quercetin, only dry weight of shoots decreased in 0.1% malic acid. Two weeks after Foa inoculation with Foa-cultured PDA cubes in vitro, incidence of Fusarium root rot reached 100% in most of the plots. The severity of root rot increased in 0.01% and 0.1% caffeic acid, 0.1% ferulic acid, 0.1% malic acid compared to control. From these results, the 4 allelochemicals used in this study are supposed to suppress asparagus growth, and such growth reduction might enhance the disease severity of Fusarium root rot as an indirect effect. In addition, such effect might differ with the allelochemicals and concentrations in asparagus.

The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of Lamiaceae herbs companion planting on growth and secondary metabolites changes in tomato plants. Furthermore, the free amino acid changes in tomato due to companion planting were also evaluated using tomato-basil companionship as a model. Four-week-old seedlings of tomato were grown in a pot containing autoclaved commercial soil with basil, peppermint and hyssop as a companion plant separately in different density. Four weeks after companion planting, tomato plants under 1:1 companionship with the herbs showed significant increase in dry weights of shoots compared to control. Higher density of the herbs on the other hand expressed a growth suppression on tomato possibly due to nutrient competition. By the LC-MS analysis, shikimic acid and apigenin were identified as the major secondary compounds found in tomato plants and 1:1 companionship with basil seemed to have a positive influence on their content in tomato shoots. On the other hand, in case of peppermint and hyssop, the increase was observed in all parts of tomato plants. In addition, promotion in several free amino acid contents was also observed in tomato plants with basil companion planting compared to control. Thus, tomato plants grown with herb companion planting in 1:1 ratio seems to have a positive impact on growth of tomato. This positive influence might be related to the increase in some secondary metabolites and changes in the free amino acids observed in this study.

Suppression of Fusarium Crown Rot and Increase in Several Free Amino Acids in Mycorrhizal Asparagus

Disease suppression of Fusarium crown rot and the changes in free amino acid contents in mycorrhizal asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L., cv. “Welcome”) plants were investigated. Sixteen weeks after arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF;Glomus intraradices) inoculation, mycorrhizal plants showed higher dry weight of shoots than non-mycorrhizal plants, and AMF colonization level in a root system reached up to 73.3%. Ten weeks after Fusarium proliferatum (Fp;N1-31, SUF1207) inoculation, control plants showed 100% incidence and high severity in the 2 Fp isolates. However, AMF plants showed lower severity than non-AMF plants in the 2 Fp isolates. Ten weeks after Fp (N1-31) inoculation, the increase in 7 constituents of amino acids (glutamine, arginine, aspartic acid, alanine, citrulline, GABA, glycine) in shoots, and 9 in roots (asparagine, arginine, threonine, serine, glutamine, citrulline, valine, GABA, histidine) occurred in AMF plants. From these findings, plant growth promotion and suppression of Fusarium crown rot occurred in mycorrhizal asparagus plants, and the disease tolerance was supposed to be associated with the symbiosis-specific increase in free amino acids.

chemical forms, reactivities and transformation of iron fractions in marshy waters were investigated with cross-flow filtration technique to study the iron environmental behavior. Iron fractions were divided into four parts： acid-labile iron （pre-acidification of unfiltered marshy water samples, 〉 0.7 μm）, high-molecular-weight iron （0.7-0.05 μm）, medium-molecular-weight iron （0.05-0.01 μm）, and low-molecular-weight iron （〈 0.01μm）. The cross-flow filtration suggested that iron primarily exist in both the 〉 0.7 μm and 〈 0.01 μm size fractions in marshy waters. Rainfall is the key for rain-fed wetland to determine fate of iron by changing the aquatic biochemical conditions. By monitoring the variation of iron concentrations and fractions over three years, it was found that dissolved iron and acid-labile iron concentrations exhibit a large variation extent under different annual rainfalls from 2006 to 2008. The seasonal variation for iron species proved that the surface temperature could control some conversion reactions of iron in marshy waters. Low- molecular-weight iron would convert to acid-labile iron gradually with temperature decreasing. The photochemical reactions of iron fractions, especially low-molecular-weight iron had occurred under solar irradiation. The relative proportion of low-molecular-weight in total dissolved iron ranging from 28.3% to 43.2% were found during the day time, which proved that the observed decreasing concentration of acid lability iron was caused by its degradation to low molecular weight iron.

Ig G4-related autoimmune pancreatitis is frequently accompanied by relevant lesions in the genitourinary tract and retroperitoneal organs, which cause various clinical problems, ranging from non-specific back pain or bladder outlet obstruction to renal failure. The diagnosis of Ig G4-related retroperitoneal fibrosis requires a multidisciplinary approach, including serological tests, histological examination, imaging analysis, and susceptibility to steroid therapy. Radiological examinations are helpful to diagnose this condition, but surgical resection is occasionally unavoidable to exclude malignancy, particularly for patients with isolated retroperitoneal involvement. Steroid therapy is the treatment of choice for this condition, the same as for other manifestationsof Ig G4-related *** patients with severe ureteral obstruction,additional ureteral stenting needs to be considered prior to steroid therapy to preserve the renal *** papers have suggested that Ig G4-related disease can affect male reproductive organs including the prostate and *** G4-related prostatitis usually causes lower urinary tract symptoms,such as dysuria and *** sometimes state that corticosteroids given for Ig G4-related disease at other sites relieve their lower urinary tract symptoms,which leads us to suspect prostatic involvement in this *** of the limited number of publications available,further studies are warranted to better characterize Ig G4-related disease in male reproductive organs.
