The effect of acculturation in the concordance of oral health related quality of life in Latino children and their p.rents

The Latino p.p.lation is the fastest growing and the largest minority group.in the United States comp.ising 16% of the p.p.lation younger than 18 years of age. Yet, little is known about the effect of acculturation in oral health related quality of life in Latino children and their p.rents. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the effect of acculturation in p.rent and child’s p.rcep.ions of the child’s oral health status and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) as well as the effect in the concordance between children and p.rents/caregivers. Method: Sixty-three Latino children between the ages of 8 and 15, and their p.rents were recruited from the waiting room at the University of California, San Francisco Orthodontic and p.diatric Clinics. p.rent and children each sep.rately comp.eted the Child Oral Health Imp.ct p.ofile questionnaire (COHIp. for children and COHIp.for p.rent/caregiver. Results: Of the sixty-three children, fifteen children (23.8%) had a more negative p.rcep.ion of their oral health than their p.rents whereas twenty-three children (36.5%) had a more p.sitive p.rcep.ion. In terms of agreement between children and p.rents, questions about oral health showed the lowest level of agreement (34.9%) and self-image questions the highest (55.6%). Conclusion: The study findings indicate that the more acculturated the child, the more negative their p.rcep.ion of their oral health. The level of disagreement between p.rent and child, underscores the imp.rtance of obtaining both the child and p.rent OHRQoL p.rcep.ions.

p.evalence of angle class III malocclusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: This study seeks to review current and relevant literature on global Angle class III malocclusion p.evalence. Materials and Methods: The electronic databases p.bMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Review were searched using sp.cific inclusion criteria to obtain ap.licable articles. All p.rtinent references were also examined for accep.ability. Results: A total of 20 articles were identified using the inclusion criteria. The p.evalence of Angle class III malocclusion ranged from 0 to 26.7% in different p.p.lations rep.rted in the literature examined. Meta-regression analysis showed no statistically significant association between p.evalence rates and the method of assessment, age group.and year of the study. However, much of the study-to-study variation (ap.roximately 40%) could be exp.ained by p.p.lation. Conclusion: These results suggest that the p.evalence of Angle class III malocclusion varies greatly within different races and geograp.ic regions. Chinese and Malaysian p.p.lations have a higher p.evalence of Angle class III malocclusion comp.red to other racial group., while Indian p.p.lations have a lower p.evalence than all other racial group. examined.
