Feeding ecology of Japanese Spanish mackerel(Scomberomorus niphonius)along the eastern coastal waters of China

Feeding activities provide necessary nutrition and energy to support the reproduction and development of fish *** feeding ecology and dietary plasticity of fish are important factors determining their recruitment and population *** a top predator,Japanese Spanish mackerel(Scomberomorus niphonius)supports one of the most valuable fisheries in *** this study,the feeding ecology and diet composition of Japanese Spanish mackerel spawning groups were analysed based on samples collected from six spawning grounds along the eastern coastal waters of China during spring(March to May)in 2016 and *** stomach contents and stable isotope analysis were *** content analysis showed that spawning groups of Japanese Spanish mackerel mainly fed on fish,consuming more than 40 different prey *** were significantly different among sampling *** most important prey species were Stolephorus in Fuzhou,Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus in Xiangshan,Euphausia pacifica in Lüsi,sand lance Ammodytes personatus in Qingdao and Weihai,and Leptochela gracilis in Laizhou *** isotope analysis showed that the trophic level of Japanese Spanish mackerel was relatively high and generally increased with latitude from south to *** the 1980 s,the diet of Japanese Spanish mackerel was dominated solely by Japanese anchovies in the eastern coastal waters of *** results in the present study showed that the importance of Japanese anchovies declined considerably,and this fish was not the most dominant diet in most of the investigated *** the spatial variations in diet composition and changes in the dominant diet over the long term indicated the high adaptability of Japanese Spanish mackerel to the *** the results of stomach analysis and stable isotope analysis from different tissues provided more comprehensive and accurate dietary information on Japanese Spanish *** study provides essential infor

Impacts of sample size for stomach content analysis on the estimation of ecosystem indices

This study used Ecopath model of the Jiaozhou Bay as an example to evaluate the effect of stomach sample size of three fish species on the projection of this model. The derived ecosystem indices were classified into three categories:(1) direct indices, like the trophic level of species, influenced by stomach sample size directly;(2)indirect indices, like ecology efficiency(EE) of invertebrates, influenced by the multiple prey-predator relationships;and(3) systemic indices, like total system throughout(TST), describing the status of the whole ecosystem. The influences of different stomach sample sizes on these indices were evaluated. The results suggest that systemic indices of the ecosystem model were robust to stomach sample sizes, whereas specific indices related to species were indicated to be with low accuracy and precision when stomach samples were *** indices became more uncertain when the stomach sample sizes varied for more species. This study enhances the understanding of how the quality of diet composition data influences ecosystem modeling outputs. The results can also guide the design of stomach content analysis for developing ecosystem models.

Distribution of Polychaete Assemblage in Relation to Natural Environmental Variation and Anthropogenic Stress

Polychaete are diverse species of the soft-bottom community, and are often used as indicators in environment monitoring programs. However, the effects of anthropogenic activities and natural environmental variation on polychaete assemblage are rarely addressed. The goals of this study are to identify the effects of natural environmental variation and anthropogenic stress on poly- chaete assemblage, and to explore the relationship between the polychaete assemblage structure and anthropogenic stress without considering the natural environmental variation. Based on the data collected from the surveys conducted in the tidal fiat of Jiaozhou Bay, the relationship between polychaete assemblage structure and environmental variables was determined using multivariate statis- tical methods including hierarchical cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling （MDS） and canonical correspondence analysis （CCA）. The results showed that the polychaete assemblage was dominated by two species, Amphictenejaponica and Heteromastusfiliformis, and could be divided into two subgroups characterized by high and low species abundance. CCA illustrated that the natural environ- mental variables including water temperature and the distance from coast had primary effects on the polychaete assemblage structure; while stress of contaminants, such as As and Hg, had the secondary influences; and stress from the aquacultured species, mainly Ruditapes philippinarum, had a limited effect. Colinearity between the natural environmental variables and anthropogenic stress variables caused a critical divergence in the interpretation of CCA results, which highlighted the risk of a lack of information in en- vironment assessment. Glycinde gurjanovae, Sternaspis scutata and Eulalia bilineata may serve as the ＇contamination indicators＇, which need to be confirmed in future studies.

Spatio-Temporal Variations in Co-Occurrence Patterns of Fish Communities in Haizhou Bay, China: Null Model Analysis

Co-occurrence pattern of fish species plays an important role in understanding the spatio-temporal structure and the stability of fish *** coexistence may vary with time and *** co-occurrence patterns of fish species were examined using the C-score under fixed-fixed null model for fish communities in spring and autumn over different years in the Haizhou Bay,*** results showed that fish assemblages in the whole bay had non-random patterns in spring and autumn over different ***,the fish co-occurrence patterns were different for the northern and southern fish assemblages in spring and *** northern fish assemblage showed structured pattern,whereas the southern assemblage were randomly assembled in *** co-occurrence patterns of fish communities were relatively stable over different years,and the number of significant species pairs in northern assemblage was more than that in the southern *** heterogeneity played an important role in determining the distributions of fish species that formed significant species pairs,which might affect the co-occurrence patterns of northern and southern assemblages further in the Haizhou Bay.

Optimization of stratification scheme for a fishery-independent survey with multiple objectives

Fishery-independent surveys are often used for collecting high quality biological and ecological data to support fisheries management. A careful optimization of fishery-independent survey design is necessary to improve the precision of survey estimates with cost-effective sampling efforts. We developed a simulation approach to evaluate and optimize the stratification scheme for a fishery-independent survey with multiple goals including estimation of abundance indices of individual species and species diversity indices. We compared the performances of the sampling designs with different stratification schemes for different goals over different months. Gains in precision of survey estimates from the stratification schemes were acquired compared to simple random sampling design for most indices. The stratification scheme with five strata performed the best. This study showed that the loss of precision of survey estimates due to the reduction of sampling efforts could be compensated by improved stratification schemes, which would reduce the cost and negative impacts of survey trawling on those species with low abundance in the fishery-independent survey. This study also suggests that optimization of a survey design differed with different survey objectives. A post-survey analysis can improve the stratification scheme of fishery-independent survey designs.

Fishery biology of whitespotted conger Conger myriaster(Brevoort, 1856) in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

Whitespotted conger Conger myriaster is a commercially important species in the seas around China, Korea and Japan. The coastal waters of China serve as an important feeding ground for congers, but the spatio-temporal variations in the fishery and biological characteristics of the population have been rarely evaluated and less well understood in this area. We studied the growth, spawning and feeding characteristics of C. myriaster on the basis of samples collected from October 2016 to April 2017 in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea. A total of 529 specimens were collected, with ages ranging from 1 to 6 years and total length ranging from 132 mm to 834 mm. The parameters of von Bertalanffy growth equation L∞ and k were 1 026 mm and 0.226 a^–1, respectively;the sex ratio was 88:0 (female: male) in the East China Sea and 2.67:1 in the South Yellow Sea;the development stage of ovary ranged from peri-nucleolus stage to secondary yolk globule stage, and the testis of two males was at midmeiotic stage;Crustacean was the major prey for conger of small length, and food source shift to fish with somatic growth. The results showed substantial differences from previous studies in Japan and Korean waters, as well as from China seas in the 1980s, suggesting potential spatiotemporal changes in the biological characteristics of C. myriaster. This study may improve current understanding of the fishery biology of C. myriaster in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea.

Seasonal fishing closures are often used in fisheries management to conserve overfished *** one of the unintended consequences,fishermen often contend for maximizing catches immediately after reopening *** resultant large catch landings in a short time period(i.e.,pulse fishing)may undermine the benefit of *** implemented an end-to-end model OSMOSE-JZB(Object-oriented Simulator of Marine ec OSystem Exploitation OSMOSE)modelling ecosystem in the Jiaozhou Bay located in China to evaluate the impact of pulse fishing on the effectiveness of seasonal closure at levels of fish community,population,and *** study demonstrated that the three-month closure was successful in conserving fish *** were small variations on ecological indicators(i.e.,total biomass of the community,mean trophic level of the community,mean trophic level of the catch,and Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index)when pulse fishing *** fishing seemed not to result in a great shift in community *** to other species,the biomass of two large predatory fishes were more susceptible to pulse *** fishing could change the pressure of predators to fish stocks via food webs,especially for young *** simulations indicate that we can improve the effectiveness of seasonal closure by managing pulse *** the results derived in this study may be specific to the target ecosystem,the general approach is applicable to other ecosystems when evaluating fishing impacts.

Impacts of Aggregation Methods and Trophospecies Number on the Structure and Function of Marine Food Webs

Aggregation of species with similar ecological properties is one of the effective methods to simplify food web ***,species aggregation will affect not only the complexity of modeling process but also the accuracy of models’*** of aggregation methods and the number of trophospecies are the keys to study the simplification of food *** this study,three aggregation methods,including taxonomic aggregation(TA),structural equivalence aggregation(SEA),and self-organizing maps(SOM),were analyzed and compared with the linear inverse model–Markov Chain Monte Carlo(LIM-MCMC)*** of aggregation methods and trophospecies number on food webs were evaluated based on the robustness and unitless of ecological net-work *** showed that aggregation method of SEA performed better than the other two methods in estimating food web structure and function *** effects of aggregation methods were driven by the differences in species aggregation principles,which will alter food web structure and function through the redistribution of energy *** to the results of mean absolute percentage error(MAPE)which can be applied to evaluate the accuracy of the model,we found that MAPE in food web indices will increase with the reducing trophospecies number,and MAPE in food web function indices were smaller and more stable than those in food web structure ***,trade-off between simplifying food webs and reflecting the status of ecosystem should be con-sidered in food web *** findings highlight the importance of aggregation methods and trophospecies number in the analy-sis of food web *** study provided a framework to explore the extent to which food web models are affected by dif-ferent species aggregation,and will provide scientific basis for the construction of food webs.

Temporal variations of food web in a marine bay ecosystem based on LIM-MCMC model

Climate change has led to significant fluctuations in marine ecosystems,including alterations in the structure and function of food webs and ecosystem *** ecosystems are critical to the functioning of the earth’s lifesupporting ***,temporal variations in most of these ecosystems have remained unclear so *** this study,we employed a linear inverse model with Markov Chain Monte Carlo(LIM-MCMC)combined with ecological network analysis to reveal the temporal variations of the food web in Haizhou Bay of *** webs were constructed based on diet composition data in this ecosystem during the year of 2011 and *** indicated that there were obvious temporal variations in the composition of food webs in autumn of 2011 and *** number of prey and predators for most species in food web decreased in 2018 compared with 2011,especially for Trichiurus lepturus,zooplankton,Amblychaeturichthys hexanema,and Loligo *** network analysis showed that the complexity of food web structure could be reflected by comprehensive analysis of compartmentalized *** Bay ecosystem was more mature and stable in 2011,while the ecosystem’s self-sustainability and recovery from disturbances were accelerated from 2011 to *** findings contribute to our understanding of the dynamics of marine ecosystems and highlight the importance of comprehensive analysis of marine food *** work provides a framework for assessing and comparing temporal variations in marine ecosystems,which provides essential information and scientific guidance for the Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management.
