Summary What is already known about this topic?The newly emerged variant of Omicron,which carries many of the mutations found in other variants of concern(VOCs),as well as a great number of new mutations that may enhance its immune escape,has spread rapidly around the world.This has raised public concern about the effectiveness of the current coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)vaccine.What is added by this report?In this study,different bioinformatic softwares were applied to predict the dominant Omicron spike(S)protein cytotoxic T lymphocyte(CTL)and T helper(Th)epitopes in representative world population and Chinese population.Compared to the original severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)S protein,limited mutations were identified within the dominant CTL and Th epitopes in Omicron variant.What are the implications for public health practice?The results of this study suggested that the current COVID-19 vaccine-induced T-cell immunity may still provide significant protection against Omicron variant infection in fully vaccinated individuals.

Wood is an invaluable asset to human society due to its renewable nature,making it suitable for both sustainable energy production and material manufacturing.Additionally,wood derived from forest trees plays a crucial role in sequestering a significant portion of the carbon dioxide fixed during photosynthesis by terrestrial plants.Nevertheless,with the expansion of the global population and ongoing industrialization,forest coverage has been substantially decreased,resulting in significant challenges for wood production and supply.Wood production practices have changed away from natural forests toward plantation forests.Thus,understanding the underlying genetic mechanisms of wood formation is the foundation for developing high-quality,fast-growing plantation trees.Breeding ideal forest trees for wood production using genetic technologies has attracted the interest of many.Tremendous studies have been carried out in recent years on the molecular,genetic,and cell-biological mechanisms of wood formation,and considerable progress and findings have been achieved.These studies and findings indicate enormous possibilities and prospects for tree improvement.This review will outline and assess the cellular and molecular mechanisms of wood formation,as well as studies on genetically improving forest trees,and address future development prospects.

Biophysical cues of the cellular microenvironment tremendously influence cell behavior by mechanotransduction. However, it is still unclear how cells sense and transduce the mechanical signals from 3D geometry to regulate cell function. Here, the mechanotransduction of human mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) triggered by 3D micropatterns and its effect on the paracrine of MSCs are systematically investigated. Our findings show that 3D micropattern force could influence the spatial reorganization of the cytoskeleton, leading to different local forces which mediate nucleus alteration such as orientation,morphology, expression of Lamin A/C and chromatin condensation. Specifically, in the triangular prism and cuboid micropatterns, the ordered F-actin fibers are distributed over and fully transmit compressive forces to the nucleus, which results in nuclear flattening and stretching of nuclear pores, thus enhancing the nuclear import of YES-associated protein(YAP). Furthermore, the activation of YAP significantly enhances the paracrine of MSCs and upregulates the secretion of angiogenic growth factors. In contrast, the fewer compressive forces on the nucleus in cylinder and cube micropatterns cause less YAP entering the nucleus.The skin repair experiment provides the first in vivo evidence that enhanced MSCs paracrine by 3D geometry significantly promotes tissue regeneration. The current study contributes to understanding the in-depth mechanisms of mechanical signals affecting cell function and provides inspiration for innovative design of biomaterials.

Small-molecule drugs are widely used in daily life.There are still issues with the current industrial synthesis techniques for small-molecule drugs,such as the use of expensive metal catalysts,convoluted reaction processes,and non-recyclable catalysts.The benefits of photocatalytic organic synthesis over conventional techniques are mild conditions,environmental friendliness,and great selectivity.Porous framework materials can precisely modulate catalytic sites'electronic state and ligand structure to improve photocatalytic performance.In particular,MOFs,COFs and PCCs based photocatalysts have received extensive research interest due to their unique morphology,structural adjustability,high photocatalytic performance,unique recyclability,excellent chemical stability,easy synthesis and low cost.Therefore,a key area for future research is the development of porous framework materials as photocatalysts for the synthesis of small-molecule drugs or drug precursors.

Molecular mechanisms of stress resistance in sorghum: Implications for crop improvement strategies

Abiotic stresses, such as drought, salt, extreme temperatures, and heavy metal pollution, are the main environmental factors that limit crop growth and yield. Sorghum, a C4 grass plant with high photosynthetic efficiency, can grow in adverse environmental conditions due to its excellent stress resistance characteristics. Therefore, unraveling the stress-resistance mechanism of sorghum could provide a theoretical basis for developing and cultivating various stress-resistant crops. This understanding could also help to create a conducive environment for using marginal soil in agriculture and ensuring food security. In this review, we discuss the adaptation mechanisms of sorghum under drought, salinity, temperature, and soil heavy metal stresses, the specific response to stress, the screening of sorghum-resistant germplasm, and the identification and functional analysis of the relevant genes and quantitative trait loci(QTL). In addition, we discuss the application potential of different stress-tolerant sorghum germplasms reported to date and emphasize the feasibility and potential use in developing and promoting highly stress-tolerant sorghum in marginal soil.

The M6.2 earthquake in Jishishan,Gansu Province,on December 18,2023,caused extraordinary earthquake disasters.It was located in the northern part of the north−south seismic zone,which is a key area for earthquake monitoring in China.The newly built dense strong motion stations in this area provide unprecedented conditions for high-precision earthquake relocation,especially the earthquake focal depth.This paper uses the newly built strong motion and traditional broadband seismic networks to relocate the source locations of the M3.0 and above aftershocks and to invert their focal mechanisms.The horizontal error of earthquake location is estimated to be 0.5−1 km,and the vertical error is 1−2 km.The focal depth range of aftershocks is 9.6−14.6 km,distributed in a 12-km-long strip with SSE direction.Aftershocks in the south are more concentrated horizontally and vertically,while aftershocks in the north are more scattered.The focal mechanisms of the main shock and aftershocks are relatively consistent,and the P-axis orientation is consistent with the regional strain direction.There is a seismic blank area of M3.0 and above,about 3−5 km between the main shock and aftershocks.It is suggested that the energy released by the main shock rupture is concentrated in this area.Based on the earthquake location and focal mechanism of the main shock,it is inferred that the Northern Lajishan fault zone is the seismogenic structure of the main shock,and the main shock did not occur on the main fault,but on a secondary fault.The initial rupture depth and centroid depth of the main shock were 12.8 and 14.0 km,respectively.The source rupture depth may not be the main reason for the severe earthquake disaster.

Liver cirrhosis has a higher incidence rate and mortality when complicated with bacterial infections.Concomitant bacterial infections,especially bacterial pneumonia,increase the susceptibility of cirrhotic patients to decompensation,with a higher likelihood of mortality.Bacterial pneu-monia is often overlooked in patients with liver cirrhosis,although it can impact the clinical progress and outcomes.Untimely diagnosis and inappropriate antibiotic treatments are associated with poor prognosis and increased mortality.Current understanding of mechanisms and appropriate antibiotic treatments for cirrhosis-related bacterial pneumonia remain inadequate.Herein,we reviewed the epidemiology,clinical characteristics and treatment of pulmonary bacterial infections in cirrhotic patients to provide suggestions for clinical practice.

Developing an energy supply-chain based on renewable biomass holds great potential to build a low carbon society. High-energy-density(HED) jet fuel, featuring unique fused/strained cycloalkanes, is of great significance for volume-limited military aircrafts, as their high density and combustion heat can extend flight duration and increase the payload. Therefore, the exploration of biomass-based routes towards HED fuel has drawn much attention over the past decade. Cycloaddition reaction features rapid construction of various carbocycles in an atom-and step-economical fashion. This elegant strategy has been widely applied in the manufacture of sustainable HED fuel. Here we carefully summarize the progress achieved in this fascinating area and the review is categorized by the cycloaddition patterns including [4+2], [2+2],[4+4], and [2+1] cycloadditions. Besides, the energy densities of the as-prepared biofuels and petroleumbased fuels(conventional Jet-A and advanced JP-10) are also compared. This review will provide important insights into rational design of new HED fuel with different ring-types/sizes and inspire the chemists to turn those literature studies into practical applications in military field.

Gluing techniques with respect to a recollement have long been studied. Recently, ladders of recollements of abelian categories were introduced as important tools. In this paper, we present explicit constructions of gluing of support τ-tilting modules via symmetric ladders of height two. Moreover, we apply the result to triangular matrix algebras to give a detailed version of the known Jasso’s reduction and study maximal green sequences.

Changes in olfactory function are considered to be early biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease.Olfactory dysfunction is one of the earliest non-motor features of Parkinson’s disease,appearing in about 90%of patients with early-stage Parkinson’s disease,and can often predate the diagnosis by years.Therefore,olfactory dysfunction should be considered a reliable marker of the disease.However,the mechanisms responsible for olfactory dysfunction are currently unknown.In this article,we clearly explain the pathology and medical definition of olfactory function as a biomarker for early-stage Parkinson’s disease.On the basis of the findings of clinical olfactory function tests and animal model experiments as well as neurotransmitter expression levels,we further characterize the relationship between olfactory dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying olfactory dysfunction in the pathology of early-stage Parkinson’s disease.The findings highlighted in this review suggest that olfactory dysfunction is an important biomarker for preclinical-stage Parkinson’s disease.Therefore,therapeutic drugs targeting non-motor symptoms such as olfactory dysfunction in the early stage of Parkinson’s disease may prevent or delay dopaminergic neurodegeneration and reduce motor symptoms,highlighting the potential of identifying effective targets for treating Parkinson’s disease by inhibiting the deterioration of olfactory dysfunction.
