Dear Editor-in-Chief,We are glad to see that there are Representatives such as Zhihong Li,who voiced"training nurse practitioners(NPs)in China to improve chronic disease management in primary care settings such as township or rural health centers"at the Fourth session of the 13th National People's Congress(NPC)[1].In addition,the Lancet,a top medical journal in the world,published a comment calling for a need of training NPs in China[2]and called upon the full potential of nurses in 2019[3].We also appeal"offering prescription right to qualified NPs is needed to increase the scope of practice for NPs in China,as there are more than 4 million nurses in the mainland of China,with one-fifth of nurses in the world.Qualified nurses with prescription right will dramatically improve access care for an aging population globally".

This review aimed to analyze the trends and contributions of nursing doctoral theses produced in Hong Kong. A total of 56 nursing doctoral theses were included in this review. The most often studied topic was cardiovascular rehabilitation care (n = 9, 16%). More recently, the most often studied topics has been health technology advancements in nursing care (n = 6, 10.7%). The common trend of study methods was to be quantitative in nature. Of the total, 35 out of 56 were quantitative studies. Half were experimental/ quasi-experimental research studies (n = 28, 50%). For theoretical foundations or applications, the majority (n = 21, 36%) of doctoral theses had no specific theoretical/conceptual models as study frameworks. This trend indicates that there is space for improving the theoretical and philosophical foundation of nursing research in Hong Kong. For the contributions of doctoral thesis research, Hong Kong nursing scholars place more emphasis on direct enhancement of clinical practice or the improvement of patient outcomes. This review provides concrete evidence of the status of nursing research and knowledge development in Hong Kong nursing.

MoNi_(4)-NiO heterojunction encapsulated in lignin-derived carbon for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Molybdenum nickel alloy has been proved to be an efficient noble-metal-free catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) in alkaline medium, but its electrocatalytic activity and stability need to be further improved to meet industrial requirements. In this study, carboxymethylated enzymatic hydrolysis lignin(EHL) was used as a biomacromolecule frame to coordinate with transition metal ions and reduced by pyrolysis to obtain the MoNi_(4)-NiO heterojunction(MoNi_(4)-NiO/C). The oblate sphere structure of MoNi_(4)-NiO/C exposed a large catalytic active surface to the electrolyte. As a result, the hydrogen evolution reaction of MoNi_(4)-NiO/C displayed a low overpotentials of 41 mV to achieve 10 mA cm-2and excellent stability of 100 h at 100 mA cm^(-2)in 1 mol L^(-1)KOH, which was superior to that of commercial Pt/C. Lignin assisted the formation of NiO to construct the MoNi_(4)-NiO interface and MoNi_(4)-NiO heterojunction structure, which reduced the energy barrier by forming a more favorable transition states and then promoted the formation of adsorbed hydrogen at the heterojunction interface through water dissociation in alkaline media, leading to the rapid reaction kinetics. This work provided an effective strategy for improving the electrocatalytic performance of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts encapsulated by lignin-derived carbon.

Aromatherapy for Laboring Women: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of oil from herbs, flowers, and other plants. The aim of this meta-analysis was to quantify the effectiveness of aromatherapy for laboring women. We searched five electronic databases till November 15th 2013 including those Chinese and English language articles. A total of 4 eligible studies were identified. Aromatherapy was effective in reducing the length of labor, but there were no statistically significant effects in the use of pharmacological analgesia, spontaneous vaginal delivery, caesarean delivery and assisted vaginal birth. Due to the limited number of articles identified, the evidence is not sufficiently convincing that aromatherapy is an effective therapy for laboring women.

Impacts of social desirability response bias on sexuality care of cancer patients among Chinese nurses

The purpose of this study was to detect social desirable response bias on Chinese nurses’ attitudes and beliefs toward sexuality care of cancer patients. A cross-sectional self-reported questionnaire based survey was used. Measures included a 12-item Inventory of Sexuality Attitude and Belief Survey (SABS) and a 10-item Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Total social desirability scores were significantly correlated with four individual items of the SABS, and significantly predicted the total SABS scores (β=﹣0.155, p= 0.028). Before controlling social desirability variable, nurses’ age, marital status, years of working experience, and working units were significantly correlated with total SABS scores. After controlling social desirability variable, only nurses’ age and working units were statistically significant predictors of SABS. Social desirable response bias had impacts on Chinese nurses’ attitudes and beliefs toward sexuality care of cancer patients. Study findings demonstrated that social desirable response bias would potentially jeopardize human sexuality assessment and counseling in nursing practice. Controlling social desirable response should consider using a social desirability scale to detect and control potential social desirability bias during data analysis.

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is characterized by recurrent attacks and long courses,and the number of patients has expanded rapidly year by year.Additionally,current conventional strategies exist serious adverse effects.In this case,it is an urgent issue to find out an effective and safe treatment.Functional oligosaccharides possess safe and excellent physiological activities,and have attracted enormous attention due to their great therapeutic potential for IBD.This review emphasizes the attenuating effects of distinct functional oligosaccharides on IBD and their structure,and summarizes the main mechanisms from the aspects of regulating intestinal fl ora structure,repairing intestinal barrier,modulating immune function and mediating related signaling pathways in order to reveal the relationship between functional oligosaccharides,immune regulation,intestinal epithelial cells,gut fl ora and IBD treatment.Oligosaccharides possess excellent protective effects on IBD,and can be considered as safe and functional ingredients in the health food and pharmaceutical industry.

Cation-πinteraction is considered one of the strongest noncovalent interactions in aqueous solutions,which endows natural biomolecules(e.g.,proteins)with robust wet adhesion and cohesion in humid/underwater environments.However,it remains a challenge to construct synthetic functional materials(e.g.,self-healing hydrogels)by adopting the cation-πinteractions rationally.Herein,we present a facile and novel strategy to fabricate injectable self-healing synthetic hydrogel from self-assembly of a thermoresponsive ABA triblock copolymer via cation-πinteractions.

目的探讨家蝇抗真菌肽-1A(MAF-1A)突变体-22S3(Mt-22S3)对白念珠菌(C.albicans)细胞的作用及机制。方法取对数生长期的C.albicans菌悬液,分别与0、125、250及500 mg/L Mt-22S3作用12 h,采用荧光显微技术及荧光检测法观测Mt-22S3作用C.albicans后细胞内活性氧(ROS)的变化;以荧光检测法测定Mt-22S3作用C.albicans后细胞内线粒体膜电位水平的变化;通过Annexin V-FITC/PI双染法,观察Mt-22S3对C.albicans细胞凋亡的影响;以琼脂糖凝胶电泳阻滞实验分析Mt-22S3对C.albicans细胞DNA的影响。结果经Mt-22S3作用的C.albicans细胞内ROS增高,且随着Mt-22S3浓度升高,细胞内ROS上升(P<0.05);线粒体膜电位检测发现,经Mt-22S3作用的C.albicans线粒体膜电位下降(P<0.01);Mt-22S3可引起C.albicans细胞凋亡及细胞坏死的发生,且Mt-22S3浓度越高,细胞凋亡及细胞坏死现象越明显;凝胶阻滞实验结果显示,Mt-22S3与C.albicans DNA孵育后产生明显的凝胶阻滞现象。结论Mt-22S3可进入C.albicans细胞内发挥抗菌作用,其机制与诱导细胞内ROS积累、去极化线粒体膜、诱导细胞凋亡和死亡、结合DNA等有关。
