Coupling metal-organic frameworks and wood-based carbon for water remediation

Fresh and clean water is highly demanded throughout the world.To effectively address the need,nanomaterials enabled nanotechnology has been explored as a means of more efficient,reliable,and environmentally friendly approach towards water treatment practices.One concern in adopting nanomaterials is how to retrieve them from water body to avoid secondary contamination.In this work,the earth abundant and sustainable wood,e.g.,basswood,was selected and carbonized into porous carbon as host skeleton,and metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),e.g.,MOF-199 with extremely high surface area,were grown throughout all channels in the porous basswood carbon.Targeting the traditional organic pollutant,methyl orange(MO),the combination of MOFs and basswood carbon(MOFs@carbon)demonstrates a remarkable adsorption capacity,which is 243%and 454%higher than basswood carbon and MOF-199,respectively.Such an outstanding adsorption performance originates from that the positively charged carbon pulls MO molecules close to carbon surface,leading to a high MO molecule concentration,and then the concentration gradient drives the MO molecules to be stored inside MOFs,functioning like pockets.These findings highlight the potential application of coupled MOFs and biomass carbon in addressing water remediation.

Current situation and prospect for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric critical rare diseases in China

The onset of critical rare diseases (RDs) in children is rapid and dangerous, accompanied by a high mortality rate, which brings a heavy burden to both families and society. Multiple malformations, neuromuscular diseases, metabolic diseases, and heart diseases are the most common types of RDs in children of China, often manifesting with multiple organ dysfunction. At present, the diagnosis and treatment of critical RDs in children face challenges such as prolonged diagnosis time, a high misdiagnosis rate, limited treatment modalities, and a significant disease burden. However, with the progress in genetic testing technology, the establishment of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment platforms, and the implementation of relevant RD policies in China, children with critical RDs will received enhanced medical services, experience improved prognoses, and reintegrate into social life.

GNN Representation Learning and Multi-Objective Variable Neighborhood Search Algorithm for Wind Farm Layout Optimization

With the increasing demand for electrical services,wind farm layout optimization has been one of the biggest challenges that we have to deal with.Despite the promising performance of the heuristic algorithm on the route network design problem,the expressive capability and search performance of the algorithm on multi-objective problems remain unexplored.In this paper,the wind farm layout optimization problem is defined.Then,a multi-objective algorithm based on Graph Neural Network(GNN)and Variable Neighborhood Search(VNS)algorithm is proposed.GNN provides the basis representations for the following search algorithm so that the expressiveness and search accuracy of the algorithm can be improved.The multi-objective VNS algorithm is put forward by combining it with the multi-objective optimization algorithm to solve the problem with multiple objectives.The proposed algorithm is applied to the 18-node simulation example to evaluate the feasibility and practicality of the developed optimization strategy.The experiment on the simulation example shows that the proposed algorithm yields a reduction of 6.1% in Point of Common Coupling(PCC)over the current state-of-the-art algorithm,which means that the proposed algorithm designs a layout that improves the quality of the power supply by 6.1%at the same cost.The ablation experiments show that the proposed algorithm improves the power quality by more than 8.6% and 7.8% compared to both the original VNS algorithm and the multi-objective VNS algorithm.

Intermolecular hydrogen-bonding as a robust tool toward significantly improving the photothermal conversion efficiency of a NIR-II squaraine dye

The photothermal therapy(PTT) has come across as a promising noninvasive therapeutic strategy for tumor treatment. However, low photothermal conversion efficiency(PCE) and hydrophobicity may impede the therapeutic efficacy of organic photothermal agents and an efficient PTT-agent must overcome these two major challenges. In this work, we developed a new strategy to promote higher PCE wherein the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between the single dye molecule and water facilitated the transformation of the absorbed energy into the heat. A hydrophilic squaraine dye(SCy1) with the second near-infrared region(NIR-II) absorption and extremely low emission were designed to exhibit much higher PCE than that of the analogues of pentamethine-dyes(PCy1, PCy2). The presence of the ‘–O-' at middle of squaric cycle enabled the intermolecular H-bonding formation between the SCy1 and water to promote the energy dissipation channel. Moreover, the introduction of long-chain phenylsulfonate groups helped in to improve the water solubility apart from serving as an additional means of further enhancing PCE through fluorescence quenching. Therefore, SCy1 with a squaraine backbone and long-chain sulfonate moieties revealed outstanding photothermal stability and anti-aggregation activity apart from showing exceptionally high PCE(74%) in water. SCy1 demonstrated excellent therapeutic efficacy when applied in the PTT treatment of tumor-bearing mice under a laser irradiation of 915 nm.

LncRNA NKILA inhibits HBV replication by repressing NF-κB signalling activation

Hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection results in liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).HBx/nuclear factor(NF)-κB pathway plays a role in HBV replication.However,whether NF-κB-interacting long noncoding RNA(NKILA),a suppressor of NF-κB activation,regulates HBV replication remains largely unknown.In this study,gain-and-loss experiments showed that NKILA inhibited HBV replication by inhibiting NF-κB activity.In turn,HBV infection down-regulated NKILA expression.In addition,expression levels of NKILA were lower in the peripheral blood-derived monocytes(PBMCs)of HBV-positive patients than in healthy individuals,which were correlated with HBV viral loads.And a negative correlation between NKILA expression level and HBV viral loads was observed in blood serum from HBV-positive patients.Lower levels of endogenous NKILA were also observed in HepG2 cells expressing a 1.3-fold HBV genome,HBV-infected HepG2-NTCP cells,stable HBV-producing HepG2.2.15 and HepAD38 cells,compared to those HBV-negative cells.Furthermore,HBx was required for NKILA-mediated inhibition on HBV replication.NKILA decreased HBx-induced NF-κB activation by interrupting the interaction between HBx and p65,whereas NKILA mutants lack of essential domains for NF-κB inhibition,lost the ability to inhibit HBV replication.Together,our data demonstrate that NKILA may serve as a suppressor of HBV replication via NF-κB signalling.

A multi-parameter-induced activation of gas therapeutic platform to remarkably amplify photodynamic therapy efficacy

Gas therapy(GT)combined with photodynamic therapy(PDT)is an effective strategy to compensate for the PDT limitation caused by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment,which can greatly improve PDT efficacy.The uncontrolled leakage of gas molecules during delivery seriously hinders its practical biological application.Herein,we report a multifunction nanomedicine that enables precise gas therapy(including carbon monoxide(CO)release and H_(2)S depletion)using a multi-parameter-induced activation gas release strategy,enlarging the PDT efficacy.This nanomedicine uses a disulfide bond to covalently link a photosensitizer with the CO donor 3-hydroxyflavone(3-HF).The disulfide bond can be specifically consumed in H_(2)S-rich tumor areas,releasing the CO donor(3-HF),and also depleting H_(2)S.More importantly,the photo-controlled production of^(1)O_(2)can induce 3-HF precise release of CO in the tumor location.Such H_(2)S,light,and^(1)O_(2)multi-parameter-induced activation of gas release strategy ensures the accuracy of GT to amplify PDT efficiency.As expected,in vitro and in vivo investigations show that GT makes up for the PDT limitation,exhibiting the highest tumor therapeutic effect.This multi-parameter-activated design strategy provides a new way to improve the precision and efficacy of multimodal synergistic therapy of tumors.

Synergetic PVA degradation and H2 evolution in photocatalytic fuel cells using Ag@Fe_(2)O_(3) cathode

In a dual-chamber photocatalytic fuel cell device,polyvinyl alcohol degradation and H2 evolution were concurrently achieved.The setup involved commercial P25 as the photoanode and Ag@Fe_(2)O_(3) nanoparticles as the cathode.Additionally,the feasibility of a Fentonlike reaction in the cathode,utilizing Fe^(2+)ions and pumped O_(2),was demonstrated.Different cathode materials,polyvinyl alcohol types,and pH values’effects were assessed on device performance.Quenching tests highlighted photoinduced holes(h+)and OH·radicals as pivotal contributions to polyvinyl alcohol degradation.Long-term stability of the device was established through cycling experiments.

TROVE2 regulated invasion and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma cells via heparanase

Background:The role of TROVE domain family member 2(TROVE2)has been well-demonstrated in autoimmune diseases;however,its involvement in liver cancer remains unclear.Therefore,this study aimed to explore the biological function and clinical significance of TROVE2 in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).Methods:The expression level of TROVE2 was analyzed in HCC and paired adjacent tissue samples using real-time reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction.The impact of TROVE2 on migration and invasion in HCC cells was analyzed through Transwell assays and Western blotting.High-throughput transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analyses were performed to identify downstream target genes.Back-complementation experiments were employed to verify the influence of downstream proteins on TROVE2-induced invasion and migration of HCC cells.Results:TROVE2 exhibited significant overexpression in liver cancer tissue,correlating with shorter overall survival.Overexpression of TROVE2 facilitated the invasion,metastasis,and epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)process of HCC cells,whereas TROVE2 knockdown restrained migration,invasion,and EMT in these cells.Transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis identified heparanase(HPSE)as a downstreamtarget protein of TROVE2.Subsequent back-complementation experiments provided evidence that HPSE overexpression promoted TROVE2-mediated prometastasis effects.Moreover,the study revealed that TROVE2 was capable of regulating the EMT pathway through GSK-3βphosphorylation.Conclusions:TROVE2 facilitated the invasion,migration,and EMT process ofHCC cells through phosphorylation of the HPSE/GSK-3βaxis,indicating its significance as an important protein in tumor progression.

Two-dimensional(2D)materials have dominated nanoscience for the last two decades.Among all 2D materials,graphene,MoS_(2),and h-BN are extremely popular and have been tenta-tively scaled up to fabricate nanocomposites,energy storage devices,flexible electronics,etc.,ex situ and in situ mechanical characterization of 2D crystals can help us understand their mechanical behavior and measure their mechanical properties,which are of great significance in both fundamental science and practical engineering.To date,a great effort has been devoted to both theoretical and experimental mechanics with a focus on unveiling mechanical behaviors and quantifying mechanical properties.Beyond original research,several insightful review works have been published with a specific focus on the mechanics of 2D materials.To have a complementary contribu-tion to the overview of the mechanics of 2D materials,we would like to review the developed experimental techniques being used to mechanically characterize 2D materials.The work-ing mechanism and associated advantages and disadvantages of the techniques will be briefly discussed.Based on the exis-tence of arguments in mechanical properties and behaviors of 2D crystals,and immature mechanical characterization of 2D materials,more intensive and comprehensive studies are expected toward a full understanding of these novel and pro-mising materials.

Design and Analysis of Spatial Modulation Based Orthogonal Time Frequency Space System

In this paper,we design a spatial modulation based orthogonal time frequency space(SMOTFS)system to achieve improved transmission reliability and meet the high transmission rate and highspeed demands of future mobile communications,which fully utilizes the characteristics of spatial modulation(SM)and orthogonal time frequency space(OTFS)transmission.The detailed system design and signal processing of the SM-OTFS system have been presented.The closed-form expressions of the average symbol error rate(ASER)and average bit error rate(ABER)of the SM-OTFS system have been derived over the delay-Doppler channel with the help of the union bounding technique and moment-generating function(MGF).Meanwhile,the system complexity has been evaluated.Numerical results verify the correctness of the theoretical ASER and ABER analysis of the SM-OTFS system in the high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)regions and also show that the SM-OTFS system outperforms the traditional SM based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(SM-OFDM)system with limited complexity increase under mobile conditions,especially in high mobility scenarios.
