This study concerned how well-educated Taiwanese American women practice their motherhood and how they held their parenting belief in America after immigration. Researcher made in-depth interviews in 1999-2000 and use parental ethnographical methods with 7 Well-educated Taiwanese American Women (WTAW), from age 30 -50, who lived in New York, Boston, San Francisco, and San Jose. Results show (a) Family benefit is always prior to WTAW’s own need fulfillment based on Taiwanese culturally belief. When the interviewees first fit into new environment with Taiwanese family-oriented value, they tend to lived in more isolated and conservative status in America. Patients with glioblastoma (GBM), a malignant brain tumor, exhibit a mean survival of less than 1.5 years. Despite treatment, the disease eventually develops resistance, resulting in disease relapse. Autophagy is a process of degradation and clearance that is activated to maintain cellular homeostasis. Its roles in cancer disease course and the treatment response, however, are controversial. In GBM, accumulating evidence has indicated that autophagy can protect cells, especially those with stemness features, causing the development of cell resistance. In this review, we discuss the impact of the cell reaction to currently active treatments, including temozolomide, radiation, tumor treating fields, bevacizumab (Avastin), etoposide (VP-16), cisplatin (CDDP), and carmustine (BCNU). Most of these induce the up-regulation of autophagy through signaling pathways of DNA damage response, reactive oxygen species, hypoxia, retinoblastoma, AMP-activated protein kinase, AKT/mTOR and MST4 kinase affecting cell fate by altering cell metabolism, cell death, and DNA repair. Treatment-related autophagy may be modulated by combining autophagy inhibitors such as chloroquine or antioxidants to prevent the development of resistance, thus improving cancer treatment.

Objective： To evaluate apoptotic effects of cisplatin and cordycepin as single agent or in combination with cytotoxicity in oral cancer cells. Methods： The influences of cisplatin （2.5 μg/mL） and/or cordycapin treatment （10 or 100 μmol/L） to human OC3 oral cancer cell line were investigated by morphological observation for cell death appearance, methylthiazoletetrazolium （MTT） assay for cell viability, flow cytometry assay for cell apoptosis, and Western blotting for apoptotic protein expressions. Results： Data demonstrated that co-administration of cisplatin （2.5 μg/mL） and cordycepin （10 or 100μmol/L） resulted in the enhancement of OC3 cell apoptosis compared to cisplatin or cordycapin alone treatment （24 h）, respectively （P〈0.05）. In flow cytometry assay, percentage of cells arrested at subG1 phase with co-treatment of cordycepin and cisplatin （30%） was significantly higher than cisplatin （5%） or cordycepin （12%） alone group （P〈0.05）, confirming a synergistically apoptotic effect of cordycepin and cisplatin. In cellular mechanism study, co-treatment of cordycepin and cisplatin induced more stress-activated protein kinase/dun terminal kinase （JNK）, the expressions of caspase-7, and the cleavage of poly ADP-ribose polymerase （PARP） as compared to cisplatin or cordycepin alone treatment （P〈0.05）. Conclusion： Cisplatin and cordycepin possess synergistically apoptotic effect through the activation of JNK/caspase-7/PARP pathway in human OC3 oral cancer cell line.

膝关节单间室骨性关节炎引起的膝内翻是常见病症之一,目前手术方法主要有胫骨高位截骨术、单髁置换术以及最新推广的腓骨截骨术。单髁置换术自开展以来已有60余年历史,相比全膝关节置换术具有可保留膝关节正常运动、手术创伤小、保留骨量多以及术后关节活动度大等优点,故单髁置换术已成为治疗内侧间室骨关节炎一种可靠的治疗方式。腓骨截骨术是一种治疗膝内翻的新治疗手段,具有手术简单、费用低、恢复快等优点,目前正在被大力推广,但其治病机制尚不很清楚。综述单髁置换和腓骨截骨两种临床手术方式,并从生物力学角度推论腓骨截骨术治疗内侧间室骨性关节炎的可能机制,提出腓骨截骨术后外侧收缩肌力下降导致关节合力矩再平衡,故关节接触位置改变、关节接触力下降可能是腓骨截骨术能够缓解疼痛治疗骨性关节炎的原因。

Nanoparticle-induced toxicological mechanisms have become one of the most studied topics in toxicology during the last few *** of their excellent antimicrobial activity,silver nanoparticles（AgNPs） are recognized as a promising nanomaterial with widespread ***,the impact of AgNPs on biological systems,regarding their possible effects and fate in living cells are still *** this study,we found that AgNPs can be taken into cells through *** internalized AgNPs eventually accumulated in lysosomes or *** size of AgNPs（SAS） was more toxic than larger size（LAS）.Our results implied that SAS led to more lysosomal dilatation,arrested autophagy and cell *** mechanisms of AgNPs-induced autophagy could be mediated by activation of oxidative stress and ER stress signaling pathways in NIH 3T3 *** treatment can trigger the expression of the ER stress and autophagy markers（IRE1＆ LC3-II）.However,the autophagy substrate p62 was accumulated in AgNPs-treated cells,which indicates that the function of autophagy may be *** results clarify the mechanism by which AgNPs induce autophagosome accumulation and reveal the effect of AgNPs on *** work illustrates the influence of AgNPs on biological systems and may provide insights to guide the development of protective measures for biomedical applications of AgNPs.

AIM: To explore both the in vitro and in vivo effects of denbinobin against colon cancer cells and clarify its underlying signal pathways. METHODS: We used COLO 205 cancer cell lines and nude mice xenograft model to study the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer effects of denbinobin. RESULTS: Denbinobin at concentration of 10-20 μmol/L dose-dependently suppressed COLO 205 cell proliferation by MTT test. Flow cytometry analysis and DNA fragmentation assay revealed that 10-20 μmol/L denbinobin treatment induced COLO 205 cells apoptosis. Western blot analysis showed that caspases 3,8,9 and Bid protein were activated by denbinobin treatment to COLO 205 cells accompanied with cytochrome c and apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) translocation. Pretreatment of MEK 1 inhibitor (U10126), but not p38 inhibitor (SB203580) and JNK inhibitor (SP600125), reversed denbinobin-induced caspase 8, 9 and Bid activation in COLO 205 cells suggesting that extracellular signal-regulated kinase were involved in the denbinobin-induced apoptosis in COLO 205 cells. Significant regression of tumor up to 68% was further demonstrated in vivo by treating nude mice bearing COLO 205 tumor xenografts with denbinobin 50 mg/kg intraperitoneally. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that denbinobin could inhibit colon cancer growth both in vitro and in vivo. Activation of extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways and AIF were involved in the denbinobin-induced COLO 205 cell apoptosis.
