Anuran interorbital distance variation:the role of ecological and behavioral factors

Eye position varies signiﬁcantly among taxonomic levels,and this variation is often shaped by ecological and behavioral factors.Eye position is often positively associated with interorbital distance where species with broad visualﬁelds possess a large distance between the left and right eye.Selective pressures underlying the evolution of the eye position are especially studied in birds and mammals.However,selective pressures underlying the evo-lution of anuran eye position which can be indicated by interorbital distance keep unknown.Here,we investigated the effects of ecological(e.***.habitat type,light availability)and behavioral factors(e.***.activity pattern,foraging mobility,and defensive strategy)on variations in interorbital distance among 260 anuran species in China.Our results showed that variations of the interorbital distance can be signiﬁcantly predicted by the activity pattern.Noc-turnal species had larger interorbital distance than both nocturnal and diurnal species.We also found that foraging mobility and defensive strategy markedly affected variation of interorbital distance.Species having slower foraging mobility and possessing poison glands had larger interorbital distance than species having faster foraging mobility and possessing non-position glands.Light availability tended to be associated with variation of interorbital distance,indicating that species living in weak light tended to possess larger interorbital distance.However,variations of the interorbital space were not associated with habitat type in anurans.Ourﬁndings suggest that anuran behaviors play key roles in shaping visualﬁelds and eye position,thus affecting the evolution of interorbital distance.

The six-degree-of-freedom movement of an offshore plate anchor is essential to evaluate anchor performance.As an emerging technology,magnetometer has shown its potential in measuring the six-degree-of-freedom movement of offshore anchors under 1-g model laboratory tests.The paper presents the feasibility of adopting a magnetometer system in geotechnical centrifuge testing.Interference factors that may affect the measuring accuracy of the magnetometer system are investigated.The results demonstrate that the magnetometer system can accurately catch the anchor movement in the soils with the restrictions of:(1)the model anchor was made with stainless steel;(2)the system was placed at least 30 cm away from the side wall of soil model tank;(3)started the measurement when the artificial acceleration by centrifuge was stable.

A survey on de novo assembly methods for single-molecular sequencing

Background:The single-molecular sequencing(SMS)is under rapid development and generating increasingly long and accurate sequences.De novo assembly of genomes from SMS sequences is a critical step for many genomic studies.To scale well with the developing trends of SMS,many de novo assemblers for SMS have been released.These assembly workflows can be categorized into two different kinds:the correction-and-assembly strategy and the assembly-and-correction strategy,both of which are gaining more and more attentions.Results:In this article we make a discussion on the characteristics of errors in SMS sequences・We then review the currently widely applied de novo assemblers for SMS sequences.We also describe computational methods relevant to de novo assembly,including the alignment methods and the error correction methods.Benchmarks are provided to analyze their performance on different datasets and to provide use guides on applying the computation methods.Conclusion:We make a detailed review on the latest development of de novo assembly and some relevant algorithms for SMS,including their rationales,solutions and results.Besides,we provide use guides on the algorithms based on their benchmark results.Finally we conclude the review by giving some developing trends of third generation sequencing(TGS).

Tumor-associated lymphangiogenesis is thought to be an importantmetastaticstepin intrahepaticccholangiocarcinoma(ICC),while the origin of tumor-associated lymphatic vessels within tumors is little known.Cancerassociated fibroblasts(CAFs)enhance tumor progression through many aspects.2 CAFs have been discovered exhibiting cellular plasticity of phenotypic transition-such as epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)which promotes increased migratory and invasive capabilities of cells.3However,mesenchymal-to-endothelial,(MEndT)transition is yet to be identified in tumor entities.

Free-Fall Penetration Behaviors of A New Dynamically Installed Plate Anchor in Marine Clay

A new dynamically installed plate anchor, the Flying Wing Anchor~?, has been developed as a sustainable anchor concept for deep-water offshore wind turbines. The anchor is firstly installed by free-fall penetration and then followed by drag embedment. If the anchor is subjected to environmental loads, it dives deeper to mobilize a higher capacity. This study presents a series of free-fall penetration tests with model anchors in different weights to assess the anchor behavior during the free-fall penetration performance in one-layer soil with a constant shear strength profile. Anchor velocities and embedment depths were measured by a magnetometer. An energy-based model and a force-based model were calibrated against the test results of model anchors with different weights. Based on the calibrated force-based model, a series of design charts were developed to estimate the embedment depth of anchors in different sizes and with different impact velocities in various marine clays. The framework to plot design charts presented herein can be potentially applied to other dynamically installed anchors to predict embedment depth in engineering practice.

Sex modulates the outcome of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease

There are many documented sex differences in the clinical course,symptom expression profile,and treatment response of Parkinson’s disease,creating additional challenges for patient management.Although subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation is an established therapy for Parkinson’s disease,the effects of sex on treatment outcome are still unclear.The aim of this retrospective observational study,was to examine sex differences in motor symptoms,nonmotor symptoms,and quality of life after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation.Outcome measures were evaluated at 1 and 12 months post-operation in 90 patients with Parkinson’s disease undergoing subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation aged 63.00±8.01 years(55 men and 35 women).Outcomes of clinical evaluations were compared between sexes via a Student’s t-test and within sex via a paired-sample t-test,and generalized linear models were established to identify factors associated with treatment efficacy and intensity for each sex.We found that subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation could improve motor symptoms in men but not women in the on-medication condition at 1 and 12 months post-operation.Restless legs syndrome was alleviated to a greater extent in men than in women.Women demonstrated poorer quality of life at baseline and achieved less improvement of quality of life than men after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation.Furthermore,Hoehn-Yahr stage was positively correlated with the treatment response in men,while levodopa equivalent dose at 12 months post-operation was negatively correlated with motor improvement in women.In conclusion,women received less benefit from subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation than men in terms of motor symptoms,non-motor symptoms,and quality of life.We found sex-specific factors,i.e.,Hoehn-Yahr stage and levodopa equivalent dose,that were related to motor improvements.These findings may help to guide subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation patient selection,prognosis,and stimulation programming for optimal the

Porous LiF layer fabricated by a facile chemical method toward dendrite-free lithium metal anode

Lithium metal is supposed to be critical material for constructing next-generation batteries due to extremely high capacity and ultralow redox potential. However, the perplexing issue of lithium dendrite growth impedes the commercial application. The initial nucleation and low Li ions diffusion rate in the electrolyte/electrode interface dominate the deposition behavior. Therefore, a uniform and flexible interface is urgently needed. Here, a facile method is proposed to prepare a thin and porous LiF-rich layer (TPL) by the in-situ reaction of small amount of ammonium hydrogen difluoride (NH4HF2) and Li metal. The deposition morphology on Li metal anode with LiF layer is significantly flat and homogeneous owning to low lateral diffusion barrier on LiF crystals and the porous structure of TPL film. Additionally, the symmetrical cells made with such TPL Li anodes show significantly stable cycling over 100 cycles at high current density of 6 mA/cm^2. The TPL Li|LiFePO4 full cells keep over 99% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 2.0 C. This approach serves as a facile and controllable way of adjusting the protective layer on Li metal.

Lymph node involvement increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence.An accurate non-invasive assessment of nodal involvement is valuable in cancer staging,surgical risk,and cost savings.Radiomics has been proposed to pre-operatively predict sentinel lymph node(SLN)status;however,radiomic models are known to be sensitive to acquisition parameters.The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model for preoperative prediction of SLN metastasis using deep learning-based(DLB)features and compare its predictive performance to state-of-the-art radiomics.Specifically,this study aimed to compare the generalizability of radiomics vs DLB features in an independent test set with dissimilar resolution.Dynamic contrast-enhancement images from 198 patients(67 positive SLNs)were used in this study.Of these subjects,163 had an in-plane resolution of 0.7×0.7 mm^(2),which were randomly divided into a training set(approximately 67%)and a validation set(approximately 33%).The remaining 35 subjects with a different in-plane resolution(0.78×0.78 mm^(2))were treated as independent testing set for generalizability.Two methods were employed:(1)conventional radiomics(CR),and(2)DLB features which replaced hand-curated features with pre-trained VGG-16 features.The threshold determined using the training set was applied to the independent validation and testing dataset.Same feature reduction,feature selection,model creation procedures were used for both approaches.In the validation set(same resolution as training),the DLB model outperformed the CR model(accuracy 83%vs 80%).Furthermore,in the independent testing set of the dissimilar resolution,the DLB model performed markedly better than the CR model(accuracy 77%vs 71%).The predictive performance of the DLB model outperformed the CR model for this task.More interestingly,these improvements were seen particularly in the independent testing set of dissimilar resolution.This could indicate that DLB features can ultimately result in a more generalizable model.

Pagoda[5]arene with Large and Rigid Cavity for the Formation of 1∶2 Host-Guest Complexes and Acid/Base-Responsive Crystalline Vapochromic Properties

Pagoda[5]arene(P5),which is composed of five 2,6-dimethoxylanthracene(2,6-DMA)subunits bridged by methylene groups at 1,5 positions,was conveniently synthesized in 43%by trifluoroacetic acid(TFA)-catalyzed one-pot condensation of commercially available 2,6-DMA and paraformaldehyde in 1,2-dichlorobenzene(o-DCB)at room temperature.P5 showed a highly symmetrical pentagonal structure with a large and deep electron-rich cavity,which made it form stable 1∶2 host–guest complexes with various aryl-pyridinium,bipyridinium,and stilbazolium salts in solution.Interestingly,P5 could complex two or even three guests with its intrinsic cavity and the pseudocavity formed by the adjacent macrocycles in solid states.Moreover,the strong intermolecular charge-transfer(ICT)interactions between P5 and the guests were observed.Especially,the complexes formed by P5 and the protonated pyridinium or bipyridinium salts showed acid/base-responsive color changes in solution and remarkable crystalline vapochromic properties by two kinds of processes:from ICT to no ICT and from ICT to enhanced ICT interaction or vice versa.We believe that the easily available P5 with the specific structure and intriguing 1∶2 host–guest complexation can find wide application in supramolecular assemblies and functional materials.

Brain function differences in drug-nave first-episode auditory verbal hallucination-schizophrenia patients with versus without insight

Background:Few studies have reported brain function differences in drug-na(i)ve first-episode schizophrenia patients who had auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) with insight vs.those without insight.This study aimed to investigate brain function differences between drug-naive first-episode AVH-schizophrenia patients with and without insight.Methods:Forty first-episode drug-naive AVH-schizophrenia patients with or without insight and 40 healthy controls between December 2016 and December 2018 were recruited in this study.The auditory hallucinations rating scale (AHRS) was used to assess AVH severity,while the insight and treatment attitudes questionnaire was used to distinguish insight.The global functional connectivity density (gFCD) between different groups was compared using a voxel-wise one-way analysis of covariance.The relationship between gFCD and AHRS total scores were analyzed using voxel-wise multiple regression.Results:Finally,13 first-episode drug-naive AVH-schizophrenia patients with insight,15 AVH-schizophrenia patients without insight,and 20 healthy controls were included for analysis.Except for global assessment of functioning scores,there were no significant differences in sociodemographic information between the AVH-schizophrenia and healthy groups (P > 0.05).Compared to the healthy controls,AVH-schizophrenia patients with insight demonstrated a decreased gFCD in the supramarginal gyrus within the primary auditory cortex,while those without insight demonstrated an increased gFCD in the inferior frontal gyrus and superior temporal gyrus and decreased gFCD in the supplemental motor area.Compared to the AVH-schizophrenia patients with insight,those without insight demonstrated an increased gFCD in the supra-marginal gyrus and posterior superior temporal lobule and a decreased gFCD in the frontal lobe.No significant correlation between gFCD and AVH severity (AHRS total score:r =0.23,P =0.590;and frequency:r =0.42,P =0.820) was found in both AVH-schizophrenia groups.Condusions:The gFCD-aberrant brain
