Rice false smut is an emerging plant disease *** A(UstA)is the major mycotoxin found in rice false smut balls,which are fungal colonies in rice *** this study,a new method consisting of macroporous resin column chromatography and high-speed countercurrent chromatography(HSCCC)was developed for UstA *** was extracted by a 3.81%HCOOH solution and adsorbed by XAD-4 *** was then eluted by a 40%methanol solution supplemented with 0.1%trifluoroacetic acid(TFA).Further purification was achieved by HSCCC using a two-phase solvent system consisting of n-butanol/TFA/H_(2)O(1/0.05/1,v/v/v).Under the optimized conditions,225 mg of UstA was obtained with a purity of 97.39%in a single run,with a final recovery of 65.2%.An inhibitory effect on seed germination of wheat and maize caused by UstA was observed in a preliminary phytotoxicity assay.

Production of the Fusarium toxin deoxynivalenol(DON)is associated with oxidative stress and has been indicated to be part of an adaptive response to oxidative stress in the important wheat fungus Fusarium *** this study,we found that the antioxidant methyl gallate(MG)displays inhibitory effects against mycelial growth,conidial formation and germination,and DON biosynthesis in *** in a dose-dependent *** with 0.05%(w/v)MG resulted in an abnormal swollen conidial *** expression of the TRI genes involved in DON biosynthesis was significantly reduced,and the induction of Tri1-GFP green fluorescence signals in the spherical and crescent-shaped toxisomes was abolished in the MG-treated ***-Seq analysis of MG-treated *** showed that 0.5%(w/v)MG inhibited DON production by possibly altering membrane functions and oxidoreductase *** with the observations that MG treatment decreases catalase,POD and SOD activity in *** results of this study indicated that MG displays antifungal activity against DON production by modulating its oxidative *** together,the current study revealed the potential of MG in inhibiting mycotoxins in ***.

大豆是一种能够寄藏间座壳属（Diaporthe）和拟茎点霉属（Phomopsis）病原菌复合体的重要作物，这种复合病原菌侵染体已报道可引起多种大豆病害，包括大豆拟茎点霉属种腐病。该研究采用了大豆拟茎点霉属和间座壳属的2个种病原菌，这2个种分离自大豆植株，并已通过形态学和分子特性鉴定。采用克赫氏法则对大豆幼苗下胚轴致病性进行试验。证明了这2种病菌对大豆具有致病性。大豆拟茎点种腐病菌（Phomopsis longicolla）在韩国被认为是最常见和致病的病原菌。拟茎点霉属病菌（Phomopsis sp．）作为一个新的大豆病原菌，可能已经被传入到其他植物上，且在中国、日本和葡萄牙该拟茎点霉属病菌的相似菌株能够侵染果树，在美国也有侵染蔬菜的报道。

Fabrication of morphology-controlled TiO_2 photocatalyst nanoparticles and improvement of photocatalytic activities by modification of Fe compounds

Our previous studies suggested that redox reaction proceeded separately on specific exposed crystal faces of TiO2 nanoparticles. Site-selective deposition of metal or metal oxide on TiO2 specific exposed crystal faces successfully proceeded using the unique reactivity properties on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles under photoexcitation. A remarkable improvement ofphotocatalytic activity of shape- controlled brookite and rutile TiO2 nanorods with modification of Fe^3＋ compounds was observed under visible light. Crystal face-selective metal compound modification on exposed crystal faces of TiO2 nanorods with brookite and futile phases was successfully prepared. Brookite and rutile TiO2 nanorods prepared by site-selective modification with metal compounds should be ideal visible-light responsive TiO2 photocatalysts because of the remarkable suppression of back electron transfer from TiO2 to oxidized metal com- pounds on the surface of the TiO2 nanorod with a brookite or rutile phase. In this paper, the development of exposed crystal face-controlled TiO2 nanorods with rutile and brookite phases was described. The obtained rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorod, showing remarkably high activity for degra- dation of organic compounds compared with the photocatalytic activities of anatase fine particles （ST-01）, is one of the most active commercially available photocatalysts for environmental cleanup in Japan. The technology of visiblelight responsive treatment for morphology-controlled rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorods by crystal face-selective modification of Fe^3＋ compounds was also discussed in this paper. The Fe^3＋ compound-modified rutile and brookite TiO2 nanorods show much higher activity than conventional visible-light responsive N-doped TiO2, which is commercially available in Japan.

AIM: To determine the use and teratogenicity of herbal medicinal products (HMP). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a University hospital to compare the difference in the pattern of use and fetal outcomes between pregnant women who took HMP and Western pharmaceutical products (WPP). RESULTS: From 1995 Jan to 2001 Dec, 61 and 372 women took HMP and WPP one month before or during their current pregnancies respectively. There was an increase in the prevalence of pregnant women who took HMP from 0 % in 1995 to 0.8 % in 2001. Among HMP users, 51.6 %, 82.8 % and 58.6 % of them had low monthly family income (<15 000), low education level (secondary education or below) and were unemployed respectively. In comparison to WPP, pregnant women used smaller number of HMP (1.4 vs 3.0, P<0.01) at a later gestation (4.8 weeks vs 3.1 weeks, P <0.01) and within a shorter duration (11.1 d vs 47.9 d, P<0.01). We investigate the gravitational wave spectrum originating from the cosmological first-order phase *** compare two models:one is a scalar field model without gravitation,while the other is a scalar field model with *** on the sensitivity curves of the LISA space-based interferometer on the stochastic gravitational-wave background,we compare the difference between the gravitational wave spectra of the former and the latter cases obtained from the bubble collision *** particular,we numerically calculate the speed of the bubble wall before collision for the two *** demonstrate that the difference between the amplitudes of these spectra can clearly distinguish between the two *** expect that the LISA with Signal to Noise Ratio=10 could observe the spectrum as the fast first-order phase transition.

Therapeutic advances: Single incision laparoscopic hepatopancreatobiliary surgery

Single-port laparoscopic surgery(SPLS) is proposed to be a step towards minimizing the invasiveness of surgery, and has since gained popularity in several surgical sub-specialties including hepatopancreatobiliary surgery. SPLS has since been applied to cholecystectomy, liver resection as well as pancreatectomy for a multitude of pathologies. Benefits of SPLS over conventional multi-incision laparoscopic surgery include improved cosmesis and potentially post-operative pain at specific time periods and extra-umbilical sites. However, it is also associated with longer operating time, increased rate of complications, and increased rate of port-site hernia. There is no significant difference between length of hospital stay. SPLS has a significant learning curve that affects operating time, rate of conversion and rate of complications. In this article, we review the literature on SPLS in hepatobiliary surgery- cholecystectomy, hepatectomy and pancreatectomy, and offer tips on overcoming potential technical obstacles and minimizing the complications when performing SPLS- surgeon position, position of port and instruments, instrument crossing position, standard hand grip vs reverse hand grip, snooker cue guide position, prevention of incisional hernia. SPLS is a promising direction in laparoscopic surgery, and we recommend step-wise progression of applications of SPLS to various hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries to ensure safe adoption of the surgical technique.

Gene expression profiles of the one-carbon metabolism pathway

One-carbon metabolism plays a critical role in both DNA methylation and DNA synthesis. Accumulating evidence has shown that interruptions of this pathway are associated with many disease outcomes including cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Mechanistic studies have been performed on genetic polymorphisms involved in one-carbon metabolism. However, expression profiles of these inter-related genes are not well-known. In this study, we examined the gene expression profiles of 11 one-carbon metabolizing genes by quantifying the mRNA level of the lymphocyte among 54 healthy individuals and explored the correlations of these genes. We found these genes were expressed in lymphocytes at moderate levels and showed significant inter-person variations, We also applied principle component analysis to explore potential patterns of expression. The components identified by the program agreed with existing knowledge about one-carbon metabolism. This study helps us better understand the biological functions of one-carbon metabolism.
