An amidoxime-based polymeric adsorbent was prepared by pre-irradiation grafting of acrylonitrile and acrylic acid onto high-density polyethylene fibers using electron beams,followed by *** recovery of uranium was investigated by flow-through experiment using simulated seawater and marine test in natural *** maximum amount of uranium uptake was 2.51 mg/g-ads after 42 days of contact with simulated seawater and 0.13 mg/g-ads for 15 days of contact with natural seawater.A lower uranium uptake in marine test can be attributed to the short adsorption time and the contamination of marine microorganisms and ***,the high selectivity toward uranium against vanadium may be beneficial to harvest uranyl ion onto adsorbents and the economic feasibility for recovery of uranium from seawater.

Enhancing microbial superoxide generation and conversion to hydroxyl radicals for enhanced bioremediation using iron-binding ligands

Harnessing bacteria for superoxide production in bioremediation holds immense promise,yet its practical application is hindered by slow production rates and the relatively weak redox potential of *** study delves into a cost-effective approach to amplify superoxide production using an Arthrobacter strain,a prevalent soil bacterial *** research reveals that introducing a carbon source along with specific iron-binding ligands,including deferoxamine(DFO),diethylenetriamine pentaacetate(DTPA),citrate,and oxalate,robustly augments microbial superoxide ***,our findings suggest that these iron-binding ligands play a pivotal role in converting superoxide into hydroxyl radicals by modulating the electron transfer rate between Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ)and ***,among the tested ligands,only DTPA emerges as a potent promoter of this conversion process when complexed with Fe(Ⅲ).We identify an optimal Fe(Ⅲ)to DTPA ratio of approximately 1:1 for enhancing hydroxyl radical production within the Arthrobacter *** research underscores the efficacy of simultaneously introducing carbon sources and DTPA in facilitating superoxide production and its subsequent conversion to hydroxyl radicals,significantly elevating bioremediation ***,our study reveals that DTPA augments superoxide production in cultures of diverse soils,with various soil microorganisms beyond Arthrobacter identified as contributors to superoxide *** emphasizes the universal applicability of DTPA across multiple bacterial *** conclusion,our study introduces a promising methodology for enhancing microbial superoxide production and its conversion into hydroxyl *** findings hold substantial implications for the deployment of microbial reactive oxygen species in bioremediation,offering innovative solutions for addressing environmental contamination challenges.

This study investigated environmental distribution and human exposure of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and their derivatives in one Chinese petroleum refinery *** was found that,following with high concentrations of 16 EPA PAHs(∑Parent-PAHs)in smelting subarea of studied petroleum refinery facility,total derivatives of PAHs[named as XPAHs,including nitro PAHs(NPAHs),chlorinated PAHs(Cl-PAHs),and brominated PAHs(Br-PAHs)]in gas(mean=1.57×10^(4)ng/m^(3)),total suspended particulate(TSP)(mean=4.33×10^(3) ng/m^(3))and soil(mean=4.37×10^(3) ng/g)in this subarea had 1.76-6.19 times higher levels than those from other subareas of this facility,surrounding residential areas and reference areas,indicating that petroleum refining processes would lead apparent derivation of ***,compared with those in residential and reference areas,gas samples in the petrochemical areas had higher∑NPAH/∑PAHs(mean=2.18),but lower∑Cl-PAH/∑PAHs(mean=1.43×10^(-1))and∑Br-PAH/∑PAHs ratios(mean=7.49×10^(-2)),indicating the richer nitrification of PAHs than chlorination during petrochemical *** occupational exposure to PAHs and XPAHs in this petroleum refinery facility were 24-343 times higher than non-occupational exposure,and the ILCR(1.04×10^(-4))for petrochemical workers was considered to be potential high ***,one expanded high-resolution screening through GC Orbitrap/MS was performed for soils from petrochemical area,and another 35 PAHs were found,including alkyl-PAHs,phenyl-PAHs and other species,indicat-ing that profiles and risks of PAHs analogs in petrochemical areas deserve further expanded investigation.

Control of N-nitrosodimethylamine(NDMA)in drinking water could be achieved by removing its precursors as one practical ***,superfine powdered activated carbons with a diameter of about 1μm(SPACs)were successfully prepared by grinding powdered activated carbon(PAC,D50=24.3μm)and applied to remove model NDMA precursors,***(RAN)and nizatidine(NIZ).Results fromgrain diameter experiments demonstrated that the absorption velocity increased dramatically with decreasing particle size,and the maximum increase in k2 was 26.8-folds for RAN and 33.4-folds for ***,kinetic experiments explained that rapid absorption could be attributed to the acceleration of intraparticle diffusion due to the shortening of the diffusion ***,performance comparison experiments suggested that the removal of RAN and NIZ(C_(0)=0.5 mg/L)could reach 61.3%and 60%,respectively,within 5 min,when the dosage of SAPC-1.1(D_(50)=1.1μm)was merely 5 mg/L,while PAC-24.3 could only eliminate 17.5%and 18.6%.The adsorption isotherm was well defined by Langmuir isotherm model,indicating that the adsorption of RAN/NIZ was a monolayer coverage *** adsorption of RAN or NIZ by SAPC-1.1 and PAC-24.3 was strongly pH dependent,and high adsorption capacity could be observed under the condition of pH>pk_(a)+*** coexistence of humic acid(HA)had no significant effect on the adsorption performance because RAN/NIZ may be coupled with HA and removed *** coexistence of anions had little effect on the adsorption *** study is expected to provide an alternative strategy for drinking water safety triggered by NDMA.

Suitable temperature and light intensity play important roles in the formation of harmful algae blooms(HABs),which can pose serious threats to aquatic ecosystems and human *** this study,we measured the growth,physiological function,and paralytic shellfish toxins(PSTs)production of Alexandrium pacificum(CCMA-272),a strain isolated from East China Sea,at different temperatures(15,20,and 25℃)and light intensities(30,60,and 90μmol photons/(m^(2)·s)).Results indicate that temperature and light intensity significantly affected the growth,physiology,and toxigenic potentials of *** optimal conditions for the growth of *** were observed at 20℃ under60μmol photons/(m^(2)·s).Regarding the production of PSTs,this strain of *** produced 12 PSTs,including carbamate toxins:saxitoxin(STX),neosaxitoxin(NEO),and gonyautoxin 1–4(GTX1,GTX2,GTX3,GTX4);dicarbamoyl toxins:dicarbamoylsaxitoxin(dcSTX),dicarbamoylgonyautoxin 2,3(dcGTX2,dcGTX3);and N-sulfocarbamoyl toxins:N-sulfocarbamoylgonyautoxin 1,2(C1,C2),and gonyautoxin 5(GTX5).Among all the PSTs,C2 was the most *** temperature(15℃)and high light intensity(90μmol photons/(m^(2)·s))were beneficial for the production of PSTs in *** cultured at 20 and 25℃,*** generated comparable total quantities of PSTs,yet the toxicity levels were lower at 25℃.Intra-cellular PSTs contents were greater than extra-cellular PSTs contents,except those under the condition of 25℃ with 30μmol photons/(m^(2)·s).However,as the increase of temperature,*** released more amounts of analogues with higher toxicity levels(e.g.,STX and dcGTX_(2))into the environment than *** findings emphasize the significant sensitivity of *** to temperature and light intensity,highlighting the importance of evaluating both intra-cellular and extra-cellular PSTs for assessing its toxicity and aiding in the prediction and management of HABs.

In this study,non-thermal plasma(NTP)was employed to modify the Cu/TiO_(2)adsorbent to efficiently purify H_(2)S in low-temperature and micro-oxygen *** effects of Cu loading amounts and atmospheres of NTP treatment on the adsorption-oxidation performance of the adsorbents were *** NTP modification successfully boosted the H_(2)S removal capacity to varying degrees,and the optimized adsorbent treated by air plasma(Cu/TiO_(2)-Air)attained the best H_(2)S breakthrough capacity of 113.29 mg H_(2)S/gadsorbent,which was almost 5 times higher than that of the adsorbent without NTP *** studies demonstrated that the superior performance of Cu/TiO_(2)-Air was attributed to increased mesoporous volume,more exposure of active sites(CuO)and functional groups(amino groups and hydroxyl groups),enhanced Ti-O-Cu interaction,and the favorable ratio of active oxygen ***,the X-ray diffraction(XRD)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)results indicated the main reason for the deactivationwas the consumption of the active components(CuO)and the agglomeration of reaction products(CuS and SO_(4)^(2−))occupying the active sites on the surface and the inner pores of the adsorbents.

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of microcatheterassisted 360-degree trabeculotomy combined with trabeculectomy(MATT-Trab)for treating refractory ***:Patients with refractory glaucoma who underwent MATT-Trab were retrospectively *** indicators for research statistics included the intraocular pressure(IOP)level,degree of decrease,changes in medication dosage,and success *** indicators included the best-corrected visual acuity and incidence of ***:This study comprised 31 patients,including 11 males and 20 females,with ages ranging from 8mo to 67y(mean age:29.40±22.10y).The average postoperative IOP at 1d,1wk,1mo,3mo,6mo,1y,and the last followup was significantly lower than the average preoperative IOP(31.33±9.24 mm Hg,P<0.05).The average number of postoperative medications at 1y was 0.48±1.51,which was significantly reduced compared to that used preoperatively(3.77±0.99,P=0.00).The absolute and qualified success rates were 45.16% and 83.87%,*** acuity exhibited no statistically significant difference between the postoperative and preoperative follow-up time points,except for the first day after *** most common postoperative complications were anterior chamber hemorrhage(25 cases,86.21%)and high IOP(10 cases,34.48%).CONCLUSION:Our results indicate that MATT-Trab is effective and safe for treating refractory glaucoma.

A new exceptionally preserved corystosperm wood from the Jurassic of East Asia

Corystosperms, an extinct group of “seed ferns” that lived from the late Permian to the Cretaceous or Eocene, are significant for seed plant phylogeny for their unique roles in partially resolving the long-standing question of angiosperm origins.A new fossil wood taxon, Fengweioxylon sinense gen. et sp. nov. is reported here based on exceptionally preserved wood material from the Jurassic in western Liaoning, China, whose peculiar wood structure enables it to be recognized as the first unequivocal fossil wood record of a corystosperm plant in Laurasia. The anatomical structures of this corystosperm wood show gymnospermous characters. The discovery of the new specimen will provide more anatomical evidence for understanding the systematic and affinity of this seed plants.
