Effects of sevoflurane on left ventricular function by speckletracking echocardiography in coronary bypass patients: A randomized trial

The present study aimed to dynamically observe the segmental and global myocardial movements of the left ventricle during coronary artery bypass grafting by transesophageal speckle-tracking echocardiography,and to assess the effect of sevoflurane on cardiac function.Sixty-four patients scheduled for the off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting were randomly divided into a sevoflurane-based anesthesia(AS)group and a propofolbased total intravenous anesthesia(AA)group.The AS group demonstrated a higher absolute value of left ventricular global longitudinal strain than that of the AA group at both T1(after harvesting all grafts and before coronary anastomosis)and T_(2)(30 min after completing all coronary anastomoses)(P<0.05).Moreover,strain improvement in the segment with the highest preoperative strain was significantly reduced in the AS group,compared with the AA group at both T1 and T_(2)(P<0.01).The flow of the left internal mammary artery-left anterior descending artery graft was superior,and the postoperative concentration of troponin T decreased rapidly in the AS group,compared with the AA group(P<0.05).Compared with total intravenous anesthesia,sevoflurane resulted in a significantly higher global longitudinal strain,stroke volume,and cardiac output.Sevoflurane also led to an amelioration in the condition of the arterial graft.Furthermore,sevoflurane significantly reduced strain improvement in the segmental myocardium with a high preoperative strain value.The findings need to be replicated in larger studies.

Potential natural vegetation(PNV)is a valuable reference for ecosystem renovation and has garnered increasing attention worldwide.However,there is limited knowledge on the spatio-temporal distributions,transitional processes,and underlying mechanisms of global natural vegetation,particularly in the case of ongoing climate warming.In this study,we visualize the spatio-temporal pattern and inter-transition procedure of global PNV,analyse the shifting distances and directions of global PNV under the influence of climatic disturbance,and explore the mechanisms of global PNV in response to temperature and precipitation fluctuations.To achieve this,we utilize meteorological data,mainly temperature and precipitation,from six phases:the Last Inter-Glacial(LIG),the Last Glacial Maximum(LGM),the Mid Holocene(MH),the Present Day(PD),2030(20212040)and 2090(2081–2100),and employ a widely-accepted comprehensive and sequential classification sy–stem(CSCS)for global PNV classification.We find that the spatial patterns of five PNV groups(forest,shrubland,savanna,grassland and tundra)generally align with their respective ecotopes,although their distributions have shifted due to fluctuating temperature and precipitation.Notably,we observe an unexpected transition between tundra and savanna despite their geographical distance.The shifts in distance and direction of five PNV groups are mainly driven by temperature and precipitation,although there is heterogeneity among these shifts for each group.Indeed,the heterogeneity observed among different global PNV groups suggests that they may possess varying capacities to adjust to and withstand the impacts of changing climate.The spatio-temporal distributions,mutual transitions and shift tendencies of global PNV and its underlying mechanism in face of changing climate,as revealed in this study,can significantly contribute to the development of strategies for mitigating warming and promoting re-vegetation in degraded regions worldwide.

Tissue adhesive,ROS scavenging and injectable PRP-based‘plasticine’for promoting cartilage repair

Platelet-rich plasma(PRP)that has various growth factors has been used clinically in cartilage repair.However,the short residence time and release time at the injury site limit its therapeutic effect.The present study fabricated a granular hydrogel that was assembled from gelatin microspheres and tannic acid through their abundant hydrogen bonding.Gelatin microspheres with the gelatin concentration of 10wt%and the diameter distribution of 1-10 lm were used to assemble by tannic acid to form the granular hydrogel,which exhibited elasticity under low shear strain,but flowability under higher shear strain.The viscosity decreased with the increase in shear rate.Meanwhile,the granular hydrogel exhibited self-healing feature during rheology test.Thus,granular hydrogel carrying PRP not only exhibited well-performed injectability but also performed like a‘plasticine’that possessed good plasticity.The granular hydrogel showed tissue adhesion ability and reactive oxygen species scavenging ability.Granular hydrogel carrying PRP transplanted to full-thickness articular cartilage defects could integrate well with native cartilage,resulting in newly formed cartilage articular fully filled in defects and well-integrated with the native cartilage and subchondral bone.The unique features of the present granular hydrogel,including injectability,plasticity,porous structure,tissue adhesion and reactive oxygen species scavenging provided an ideal PRP carrier toward cartilage tissue engineering.

Enantioselective Synthesis of Benzimidazole Atropisomers Featuring a N-N Axis

Atroposelective synthesis of N-N atropisomers is an emerging area but remains underexplored;in particular,the synthesis of N-N benzimidazole atropisomers is still unprecedented.Herein,the first enantioselective synthesis of N-N benzimidazole atropisomers via the palladium-catalyzed de novo construction of benzimidazole skeleton is presented.With readily available palladium catalyst and biphosphine ligand,a broad range of nonbiaryl benzimidazole and indole-benzimidazole atropisomers were conveniently ac-cessed in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.Significantly,these N-N benzimidazole atropisomers showed great anti-tumor activity and selectivity to breast cancer MCF-7 cells.The simple catalytic system,broad substrate scope,high enantioselectivi-ty,and good bioactivity make this approach highly attractive.

Assessment of Crop Yield in China Simulated by Thirteen Global Gridded Crop Models

Global gridded crop models(GGCMs) have been broadly applied to assess the impacts of climate and environmental change and adaptation on agricultural production. China is a major grain producing country, but thus far only a few studies have assessed the performance of GGCMs in China, and these studies mainly focused on the average and interannual variability of national and regional yields. Here, a systematic national-and provincial-scale evaluation of the simulations by13 GGCMs [12 from the GGCM Intercomparison(GGCMI) project, phase 1, and CLM5-crop] of the yields of four crops(wheat, maize, rice, and soybean) in China during 1980–2009 was carried out through comparison with crop yield statistics collected from the National Bureau of Statistics of China. Results showed that GGCMI models generally underestimate the national yield of rice but overestimate it for the other three crops, while CLM5-crop can reproduce the national yields of wheat, maize, and rice well. Most GGCMs struggle to simulate the spatial patterns of crop yields. In terms of temporal variability, GGCMI models generally fail to capture the observed significant increases, but some can skillfully simulate the interannual variability. Conversely, CLM5-crop can represent the increases in wheat, maize, and rice, but works less well in simulating the interannual variability. At least one model can skillfully reproduce the temporal variability of yields in the top-10 producing provinces in China, albeit with a few exceptions. This study, for the first time, provides a complete picture of GGCM performance in China, which is important for GGCM development and understanding the reliability and uncertainty of national-and provincial-scale crop yield prediction in China.

LONP1 ameliorates liver injury and improves gluconeogenesis dysfunction in acute-on-chronic liver failure

Background:Acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF)is a severe liver disease with complex pathogenesis.Clinical hypoglycemia is common in patients with ACLF and often predicts a worse prognosis.Accumulating evidence suggests that glucose metabolic disturbance,especially gluconeogenesis dysfunction,plays a critical role in the disease progression of ACLF.Lon protease-1(LONP1)is a novel mediator of energy and glucose metabolism.However,whether gluconeogenesis is a potential mechanism through which LONP1 modulates ACLF remains unknown.Methods:In this study,we collected liver tissues from ACLF patients,established an ACLF mouse model with carbon tetrachloride(CCl 4),lipopolysaccharide(LPS),and D-galactose(D-gal),and constructed an in vitro hypoxia and hyperammonemia-triggered hepatocyte injury model.LONP1 overexpression and knockdown adenovirus were used to assess the protective effect of LONP1 on liver injury and gluconeogenesis regulation.Liver histopathology,biochemical index,mitochondrial morphology,cell viability and apoptosis,and the expression and activity of key gluconeogenic enzymes were detected to explore the underlying protective mechanisms of LONP1 in ACLF.Results:We found that LONP1 and the expressions of gluconeogenic enzymes were downregulated in clinical ACLF liver tissues.Furthermore,LONP1 overexpression remarkably attenuated liver injury,which was characterized by improved liver histopathological lesions and decreased serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT)and aspartate aminotransferase(AST)in ACLF mice.Moreover,mitochondrial morphology was improved upon overexpression of LONP1.Meanwhile,the expression and activity of the key gluconeogenic enzymes were restored by LONP1 overexpression.Similarly,the hepatoprotective effect was also observed in the hepatocyte injury model,as evidenced by improved cell viability,reduced cell apoptosis,and improved gluconeogenesis level and activity,while LONP1 knockdown worsened liver injury and gluconeogenesis disorders.Conclusion:We demonstrated that gluconeogenesis dysfunc

Efficient electroreduction of nitrate via enriched active phases on copper-cobalt oxides

Electrochemical conversion of nitrate(NO_(3)~-) to ammonia(NH_(3)) can target two birds with one stone well, in NO_(3)^(-)-containing sewage remediation and sustainable NH_(3) production. However, single metalbased catalysts are difficult to drive high-efficient NO_(3)~- removal due to the multi-electron transfer steps.Herein, we present a tandem catalyst with simple structure, Cu-Co binary metal oxides(Cu-Co-O), by engineering intermediate phases as catalytic active species for NO_(3)~- conversion. Electrochemical evaluation,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ Raman spectra together suggest that the newly-generated Cu-based phases was prone to NO_(3)~- to NO_(2)~- conversion, then NO_(2)~- was reduced to NH_(3) on Co-based species. At an applied potential of -1.1 V vs. saturated calomel electrode, the Cu-Co-O catalyst achieved NO_(3)~- -N removal of 90% and NH_(3) faradaic efficiency of 81% for 120 min in 100 m L of 50 mg/L NO_(3)~- -N,consuming only 0.69 k Wh/mol in a two-electrode system. This study provides a facile and efficient engineering strategy for developing high-performance catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrate conversion.

Hydrocarbon Charging and Accumulation Process of the Large Bozhong19-6 Condensate Gas Reservoirs in the Southwestern Bozhong Sub-Basin,Bohai Bay Basin,China

The Bozhong19-6(BZ19-6)condensate gas reservoirs,located in the southwestern Bozhong sub-basin,Bohai Bay Basin,China,were paleo-oil reservoirs in the geological past and have undergone at least three successive hydrocarbon charging events.The hydrocarbon migration and accumulation process of“early oil and late gas”has occurred in the current reservoirs.At the end of the sedimentation of the Guantao Formation(N_(1)g,∼12 Ma),the reservoirs began to fill with first stage low-moderate mature crude oil.At the late stage of the Lower Minghuazhen Formation(N_(1)ml)(∼6.7 Ma),the reservoirs were largely charged with second stage high mature crude oil.Since the deposition of the upper Minghuazhen Formation(N_(2)m^(u),∼5.1 Ma),the paleo-oil reservoirs were transformed into shallow Neogene reservoirs due to the reactivation of basement faults.From the late stage of the N_(2)m^(u)to the present day(∼2.8–0 Ma),the reservoirs were rapidly filled by natural gas within a short period.In addition,analysis of the formation of the reservoir bitumen and the conspicuous loss of the lower molecular weight n-alkanes in the crude oil reveal that the injection of a large amount of gas in the late stage caused gas flushing of the early charged oil.

To improve the internal quantum efficiency(IQE)and light output power of In Ga N light-emitting diodes(LEDs),we proposed an In-composition gradient increase and decrease In Ga N quantum barrier structure.Through analysis of its P-I graph,carrier concentration,and energy band diagram,the results showed that when the current was 100 m A,the In-composition gradient decrease quantum barrier(QB)structure could effectively suppress electron leakage while improving hole injection efficiency,resulting in an increase in carrier concentration in the active region and an improvement in the effective recombination rate in the quantum well(QW).As a result,the IQE and output power of the LED were effectively improved.

Effect of the Filling Liquid Ratio on the Thermal Performance of a Novel Thermal Diode with Wick

The application of thermal diodes,which allow heat to flow more readily in one direction than the other,is an important way to reduce energy consumption in buildings and enhance the battery heat dissipation of electric vehicles.Depending on various factors including the specific design,materials used,and operating conditions,the convective thermal diode can exhibit the best thermal rectification effect in intended applications compared to the other thermal diodes.In this study,a novel convective thermal diode with a wick was proposed based on the phase change heat transfer mechanism.This design takes advantage of both capillary forces provided by the wick and gravity to achieve enhanced unidirectional heat transfer performance for the designed convective thermal diode.The effect of the filling liquid ratio on the thermal performance of the thermal diode was experimentally investigated,which was in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.The research findings showed that with an optimal liquid filling ratio of 140%,the thermal diode with a wick can achieve a better thermal rectification ratio when subjected to a lower heating power,and the maximum thermal rectification ratio of 21.76 was experimentally achieved when the heating power of the thermal diode was 40 W.
