Review on the terahertz metasensor:from featureless refractive index sensing to molecular identification

The terahertz(THz)wave is at the intersection between photonics and electronics in the electromagnetic spectrum.Since the vibration mode of many biomedical molecules and the weak interaction mode inside the molecules fall in the THz regime,utilizing THz radiation as a signal source to operate substance information sensing has its unique advantages.Recently,the metamaterial sensor(metasensor)has greatly enhanced the interaction between signal and substances and spectral selectivity on the subwavelength scale.However,most past review articles have demonstrated the THz metasensor in terms of their structures,applications,or materials.Until recently,with the rapid development of metasensing technologies,the molecular information has paid much more attention to the platform of THz metasensors.In this review,we comprehensively introduce the THz metasensor for detecting not only the featureless refractive index but also the vibrational/chiral molecular information of analytes.The objectives of this review are to improve metasensing specificity either by chemical material-assisted analyte capture or by physical molecular information.Later,to boost THz absorption features in a certain frequency,the resonant responses of metasensors can be tuned to the molecular vibrational modes of target molecules,while frequency multiplexing techniques are reviewed to enhance broadband THz spectroscopic fingerprints.The chiral metasensors are also summarized to specific identification chiral molecules.Finally,the potential prospects of next generation THz metasensors are discussed.Compared to featureless refractive index metasensing,the specific metasensor platforms accelerated by material modification and molecular information will lead to greater impact in the advancement of trace detection of conformational dynamics of biomolecules in practical applications.

Bio-inspired Design and Inverse Kinematics Solution of an Omnidirectional Humanoid Robotic Arm with Geometric and Load Capacity Constraints

Inspired by the driving muscles of the human arm,a 4-Degree of Freedom(DOF)concentrated driving humanoid robotic arm is proposed based on a spatial double parallel four-bar mechanism.The four-bar mechanism design reduces the inertia of the elbow-driving unit and the torque by 76.65%and 57.81%,respectively.Mimicking the human pose regulation strategy that the human arm picks up a heavy object by adjusting its posture naturally without complicated control,the robotic arm features an integrated position-level closed-form inverse solution method considering both geometric and load capacity limitations.This method consists of a geometric constraint model incorporating the arm angle(φ)and the Global Configuration(GC)to avoid joint limits and singularities,and a load capacity model to constrain the feasible domain of the arm angle.Further,trajectory tracking simulations and experiments are conducted to validate the feasibility of the proposed inverse solution method.The simulated maximum output torque,maximum output power and total energy consumption of the robotic arm are reduced by up to 2.0%,13.3%,and 33.3%,respectively.The experimental results demonstrate that the robotic arm can bear heavy loads in a human-like posture,effectively reducing the maximum output torque and energy consumption of the robotic arm by 1.83%and 5.03%,respectively,while avoiding joints beyond geometric and load capacity limitations.The proposed design provides a high payload–weight ratio and an efficient pose control solution for robotic arms,which can potentially broaden the application spectrum of humanoid robots.

Grapevine-like high entropy oxide composites boost high-performance lithium sulfur batteries as bifunctional interlayers

Lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs)with high energy densities have been demonstrated the potential for energy-intensive demand applications.However,their commercial applicability is hampered by hysteretic electrode reaction kinetics and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides(LiPSs).In this work,an interlayer consisting of high-entropy metal oxide(Cu_(0.7)Fe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)Ni_(0.6)Sn_(0.5))O_(4) grown on carbon nanofibers(HEO/CNFs)is designed for LSBs.The CNFs with highly porous networks provide transport pathways for Li^(+) and e^(-),as well as a physical sieve effect to limit LiPSs crossover.In particular,the grapevine-like HEO nanoparticles generate metal-sulfur bonds with LiPSs,efficiently anchoring active materials.The unique structure and function of the interlayer enable the LSBs with superior electrochemical performance,i.e.,the high specific capacity of 1381 mAh g^(-1) at 0.1 C and 561 mAh g^(-1) at 6 C.This work presents a facile strategy for exploiting high-performance LSBs.

Robotic surgery systems,as emerging minimally invasive approaches,have been increasingly applied for the treatment of esophageal cancer because they provide a high-definition three-dimensional surgical view and mechanical rotating arms that surpass the limitations of human hands,greatly enhancing the accuracy and flexibility of surgical methods.Robot-assisted McKeown esophagectomy(RAME),a common type of robotic esophagectomy,has been gradually implemented with the aim of reducing postoperative complications,improving postoperative recovery and achieving better long-term survival.Multiple centers worldwide have reported and summarized their experiences with the RAME,and some have also discussed and analyzed its perioperative effects and survival prognosis compared with those of video-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy.Compared to traditional surgery,the RAME has significant advantages in terms of lymph node dissection although there seems to be no difference in overall survival or disease-free survival.With the continuous advancement of technology and the development of robotic technology,further development and innovation are expected in the RAME field.This review elaborates on the prospects of the application and advancement of the RAME to provide a useful reference for clinical practice.

Tungsten oxide-anchored Ru clusters with electron-rich and anti-corrosive microenvironments for efficient and robust seawater splitting

Ruthenium(Ru)has been recognized as a prospective candidate to substitute platinum catalysts in water-splitting-based hydrogen production.However,minimizing the Ru contents,optimizing the water dissociation energy of Ru sites,and enhancing the long-term stability are extremely required,but still face a great challenge.Here,we report on creating tungsten oxide-anchored Ru clusters(Ru-WO_(x))with electron-rich and anti-corrosive microenvironments for efficient and robust seawater splitting.Benefiting from the abundant oxygen vacancy structure in tungsten oxide support,the Ru-WO_(x)exhibits strong Ru-O and Ru-W bonds at the interface.Our study elucidates that the strong Ru-O bonds in Ru-WO_(x)may accelerate the water dissociation kinetics,and the Ru-W bonds will lead to the strong metal-support interaction and electrons transfer fromWto Ru.The optimal Ru-WO_(x)catalysts exhibit a low overpotential of 29 and 218mVat the current density of 10 mA cm^(−2) in alkaline and seawater media,respectively.The outstanding long-term stability discloses that the Ru-WO_(x)catalysts own efficient corrosion resistance in seawater electrolysis.We believe that thiswork offers new insights into the essential roles of electron-rich and anti-corrosivemicroenvironments in Ru-based catalysts and provide a new pathway to design efficient and robust cathodes for seawater splitting.

Feature Preserving Parameterization for Quadrilateral Mesh Generation Based on Ricci Flow and Cross Field

We propose a newmethod to generate surface quadrilateralmesh by calculating a globally defined parameterization with feature constraints.In the field of quadrilateral generation with features,the cross field methods are wellknown because of their superior performance in feature preservation.The methods based on metrics are popular due to their sound theoretical basis,especially the Ricci flow algorithm.The cross field methods’major part,the Poisson equation,is challenging to solve in three dimensions directly.When it comes to cases with a large number of elements,the computational costs are expensive while the methods based on metrics are on the contrary.In addition,an appropriate initial value plays a positive role in the solution of the Poisson equation,and this initial value can be obtained from the Ricci flow algorithm.So we combine the methods based on metric with the cross field methods.We use the discrete dynamic Ricci flow algorithm to generate an initial value for the Poisson equation,which speeds up the solution of the equation and ensures the convergence of the computation.Numerical experiments show that our method is effective in generating a quadrilateral mesh for models with features,and the quality of the quadrilateral mesh is reliable.

Design and Experiments of a Human-Leg-Inspired Omnidirectional Robotic Leg

Bionic-based robotic legs enable the legged robots with elegant and agile mobility in multi-terrain environment,just like natural living beings.And the smart design could efficiently improve the performance of a robotic leg.Inspired by the simplified human leg structure,we present a 3-DOF robotic leg—OmniLeg,that is capable of making omnidirectional legged locomotion while keeping constant posture of the foot.Additionally,the concentrated drive mode,in which all the motor actuators are installed in the torso and do not move with the leg,minimizes the inertia of the robotic leg.In this paper,the modular design,the kinematics model,the structural analysis,the workspace,and the performance evaluation of the OmniLeg are discussed.Furthermore,we build a prototype based on the proposed design,and the precision of it is verified by the error calibration experiment which is conducted by tracking the trajectory of the prototype’s endpoint.Then,we present an OmniLeg-based single legged mobile robot.The capability of omnidirectional legged locomotion of the OmniLeg is demonstrated by the experiments.

Integrated terahertz vortex beam emitter for rotating target detection

We propose a terahertz(THz)vortex emitter that utilizes a high-resistance silicon resonator to generate vortex beams with various topological charges.Addressing the challenge of double circular polarization superposition resulting from the high refractive index contrast,we regulate the transverse spin state through a newly designed second-order grating partially etched on the waveguide’s top side.The reflected wave can be received directly by a linearly polarized antenna,simplifying the process.Benefiting from the tuning feature,a joint detection method involving positive and negative topological charges identifies and detects rotational Doppler effects amid robust micro-Doppler interference signals.This emitter can be used for the rotational velocity measurement of an on-axis spinning object,achieving an impressive maximum speed error rate of∼2%.This approach holds promise for the future development of THz vortex beam applications in radar target detection and countermeasure systems,given its low cost and potential for mass production.

The investigation of converged twisted beams with a helical phase structure has a remarkable impact on both fundamental physics and practical applications.Geometric metasurfaces consisting of individually orientated metal/dielectric meta-atoms provide an ultracompact platform for generating converged vortices.However,it is still challenging to simultaneously focus left-handed and right-handed circularly polarized incident beams with pure geometric phase modulation,which hinders the independent operation on topological charges between these two helical components.Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach to design terahertz geometric metasurfaces that can generate helicity-independent converged vortices with homogeneous polarization states by the superposition of two orthogonal helical vortices with identical topological charges.Furthermore,the multiplexing of polarization-rotatable multiple vortices in multiple dimensions,i.e.,in both longitudinal and transverse directions,and a vortex with an extended focal depth is confirmed by embedding polarization modulation into the geometric metasurfaces.The demonstrated approach provides a new way to simultaneously manipulate orthogonal helical components and expand the design dimension,enabling new applications of geometric metasurface devices in polarization optics,twisted-beam related image and edge detection,high capacity optical communication,and quantum information processing,to name a few.

Id2 epigenetically controls CD8^(+)T-cell exhaustion by disrupting the assembly of the Tcf3-LSD1 complex

CD8^(+)T-cell exhaustion is a state of dysfunction that promotes tumor progression and is marked by the generation of Slamf6^(+)progenitor exhausted(Tex^(prog))and Tim-^(3+)terminally exhausted(Tex^(term))subpopulations.Inhibitor of DNA binding protein 2(Id2)has been shown to play important roles in T-cell development and CD8^(+)T-cell immunity.However,the role of Id2 in CD8^(+)T-cell exhaustion is unclear.Here,we found that Id2 transcriptionally and epigenetically regulates the generation of Texprog cells and their conversion to Texterm cells.Genetic deletion of Id2 dampens CD8^(+)T-cell-mediated immune responses and the maintenance of stem-like CD8^(+)T-cell subpopulations,suppresses PD-1 blockade and increases tumor susceptibility.Mechanistically,through its HLH domain,Id2 binds and disrupts the assembly of the Tcf3-Tal1 transcriptional regulatory complex,and thus modulates chromatin accessibility at the Slamf6 promoter by preventing the interaction of Tcf3 with the histone lysine demethylase LSD1.Therefore,Id2 increases the abundance of the permissive H3K4me2 mark on the Tcf3-occupied E-boxes in the Slamf6 promoter,modulates chromatin accessibility at the Slamf6 promoter and epigenetically regulates the generation of Slamf6+Texprog cells.An LSD1 inhibitor GSK2879552 can rescue the Id2 knockout phenotype in tumor-bearing mice.Inhibition of LSD1 increases the abundance of Slamf6^(+)Tim-3^(−)Tex^(prog) cells in tumors and the expression level of Tcf1 in Id2-deleted CD8+T cells.This study demonstrates that Id2-mediated transcriptional and epigenetic modification drives hierarchical CD8^(+)T-cell exhaustion,and the mechanistic insights gained may have implications for therapeutic intervention with tumor immune evasion.
