When Fleeing Matters:Differences in Escape Behaviours of Three Northeast Asian Anurans

Prey species may have their own optimal escape strategy to balance predation risks and the energetic cost of *** species have an advantage when maintaining a short fleeing distance,while others may favour an earlier escape based on microhabitat,size,or body ***,we examined the escape behaviour of the three syntopic Northeast Asian anuran species:Mongolian toads(Strauchbufo raddei),Amur brown frogs(Rana amurensis),and Japanese treefrogs(Dryophytes japonicus)in Mongolia,Russia,China and DPR *** examined flight initiation distance(FID;the distance from a potential predator to the point when the individual starts to flee)and distance fled(DF;distance between flight initiation and flight termination points)of each species and the effects of microhabitat,sex,and body *** raddei and *** had a longer FID than ***,and *** also had a longer DF than *** trends remained similar when dividing FID and DF by a size proxy(snout-vent length)for all *** suggests that the treefrog *** used a strategy to stay immobile even when they were detected,and the toad *** reacted quicker and more sensitively to predators despite the presence of *** *** had a significantly longer FID than males suggesting that females are more sensitive to predation risk in this species,but body size was not significant for any of the three *** results indicate that the three sympatric species have different escaping strategies,likely related to differences in physiology and crypticity.

The calling activity of anurans is influenced by environmental variables and calls produced by syntopic amphibians,among other *** variables have a strong influence,such as temperature and predation dilution,while others may have a periodical influence such as the moon ***,we hypothesised that the calling activity of the Suweon treefrog,Dryophytes suweonensis,is restricted by specific environmental variables but reinforced by the calling activity of specific syntopic *** the criteria set by the experimental design,*** calling activity was significantly influenced by moon phase,temperature,date,time to sunset and the calling activity of Pelophylax nigromaculatus and *** variables are expected to be related to chorus size,predation,breeding phenology and competition,suggesting a broad plasticity in the calling activity of the species.

The phylogeography of the Kaloula genus in East Asia is still poorly *** of the difficulties is the absence of fossils to corroborate molecular dating ***,we examined the mitochondrial structure of Kaloula *** East Asia and focused on the impact of glaciations on the northernmost species:Kaloula *** determined the phylogenetic relationships,molecular dating,and genetic connectivity assessments within the genus from 1211 bp of concatenated mitochondrial 12S and *** relaxed clock analyses reveal the emergence of Kaloula *** ancestor in East and Southeast Asia between the Eocene and Oligocene,c.38.47 Ma(24.69–53.65).The genetic diversification of lineages then increased on the East Asian Mainland during the Lower Miocene,c.20.10(8.73–30.65),most likely originating from the vicariance and radiation triggered by the orogeny of the Qinghai–Tibetan ***,the dispersal towards the North East Asian Mainland during the Upper Miocene drove the population diversification of *** c.9.01 Ma(3.66–15.29).Finally,the central mainland population became isolated following orogenesis events and diverged into *** during the Pliocene,c.3.06 Ma(0.02–10.90).The combination of population genetic and barrier analyses revealed a significant genetic isolation between populations of Kaloula *** with the massive Qinling–Daba Mountain chain located in south-central ***,we highlight a young divergence within the Eastern Mainland population of ***,possibly attributed to refugia in south eastern China from which populations later expanded.

Temporal and spatial differentiation in microhabitat use: Implications for reproductive isolation and ecological niche specification

Niche differentiation enables ecologically similar species to coexist by lessening competition over food and/or shelters and may be critical for reproductive isolation between closely related species in close ***cause no extra traits need to evolve,spatial and temporal differentiation may readily take place to complement other isolating *** closely related treefrog species occur together in Korea:the endangered Hyla suweonensis and the widespread Hyla *** calls are differentiated,but it is unclear whether call difference is sufficient for reproductive *** tracked individuals of both species to study fine-scale differentiation in microhabitat use in the diel cycle of the breeding season using a harmonic direction *** male movement patterns of both species revealed spatial and temporal differentiation in microhabitat use for calling and resting during the breeding *** of both *** and *** occurred in all 5 microhabitats identified in this study:rice paddy,ground,buried,grass and *** treefrog species showed general similarities in calling from rice paddies and resting in grass and ***,*** moved into rice paddies and produced advertisement calls 3 h earlier than *** differences likely minimize contact between the species and provide an additional isolating *** addition,the activity of *** may be contributing to the decline of this species,as resting in grass would increase dangers from predatory birds and habitat disturbance.

Males of the Emma field cricket Teleogryllus emma produce calling songs that are attractive to receptive *** calling songs of T. emma are complex,consisting of long and short *** long chirps are made up of up to 12 single pulses and the short chirps consist of several *** of field and lab-recorded calling songs revealed that properties of long chirps are generally less variable than those of short chirps across geographic *** used both single-stimulus and two-stimulus playback experiments to learn which part of the calling calling was critical for species recognition and what features were important for sexual selection,*** used for playback experiments were 1) standard,2) long chirp only,3) long chirp augmented,4) short chirp only,and 5) short chirp augmented *** standard stimulus included both long and short chirps whose characteristics were derived from calling songs of field *** long chirp only and short chirp only stimuli were the standard stimulus without short chirp and long chirp,*** long chirp augmented and short chirp augmented stimuli were the long chirp only and short chirp only stimuli whose pulse numbers were added to the length of the standard stimulus. Results of the single-stimulus playback experiment showed that female crickets oriented more often towards the standard,long chirp only,and long chirp augmented stimuli than towards the short chirp only and short chirp augmented stimuli,indicating that the long chirp part may be critical for species *** the two-stimulus choice experiment, females preferred the standard stimulus,long chirp augmented,and short chirp augmented *** result implied that short chirps mighted be added to the long chirps to increase the attractiveness of the calling songs to female crickets in ***.
