Numerical study of the cross-shore range and the intensity of the Nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current(NKBC)

Temperature and salinity data,obtained by two snapshot surveys during 19-20 May 2019 and 12-25 September 2019 across the East China Sea(ECS)shelf,revealed that the Kuroshio intrusion to the north of 28°N comprised the Nearshore Kuroshio Branch Current(NKBC)and the Off shore Kuroshio Branch Current(OKBC)at the bottom of the ECS during spring 2019,and that the NKBC was weak during autumn 2019.The Regional Ocean Model System was used to reproduce the distribution of water masses and the current structure over the continental shelf of the ECS during 2019.Analyses of the momentum balances indicated that the cross-shore range and the intensity of the NKBC were determined by the combination of the geostrophic fl ow and bottom Ekman current.In comparison with that in May 2019,a weakened shoreward bottom Ekman current and an increased off shoreward geostrophic fl ow caused the disappearance of cross-shore range of the NKBC in September 2019.Meanwhile,a diminished northeastward alongshore geostrophic fl ow in September 2019 also weakened the intensity of the NKBC.Sensitivity experiments indicated that a strong southwestward wind can push the western(eastern)boundary of the NKBC further off shoreward(shoreward)by increasing(decreasing)the off shore geostrophic fl ow(bottom Ekman current).A weak Taiwan Warm Current(TWC)can move the eastern boundary of the NKBC shoreward by decreasing the onshore bottom Ekman current.A weak Kuroshio Current(KC)can move the eastern boundary of the NKBC shoreward by increasing the off shoreward geostrophic fl ow.Furthermore,a strong(weak)southwestward wind,weak(strong)TWC,and strong(weak)KC can diminish(enhance)the intensity of the NKBC.Of the three factors,the wind plays the major role in infl uencing the NKBC.

Volume transport in the East Taiwan Channel in response to diff erent tracks of typhoons as revealed by HYCOM data

Northward infl ow through the East Taiwan Channel is vital in modulation of water exchange processes off northeastern Taiwan,China.In addition to the eff ects of the Kuroshio Current and westward-propagating oceanic mesoscale eddies,the seas off eastern Taiwan,China,are frequently infl uenced by typhoons.Focusing on extrema of East Taiwan Channel volume transport(ETCVT)that appear within days of typhoon infl uence,this study investigated 124 historical cyclones including 91 typhoons that passed over the study sea area off eastern Taiwan,China.Based on 25-year HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model(HYCOM)data,71%of short-term(within 10 d)ETCVT absolute values with>5 Sv occurred under the infl uence of typhoons crossing the study sea area,and the maximum short-term ETCVT extrema induced by typhoons were 12.5 and-10.9 Sv.The ETCVT extrema induced by typhoons showed reasonable positive correlation with typhoon wind speed.More importantly,the ETCVT extrema diff ered in response to diff erent typhoon tracks.Three types of typhoon were identifi ed based on their track and impact on ETCVT.Representative typhoon cases were examined to elucidate the specifi cs of each typical response.Based on historical best track data and HYCOM data,it was established that Type I typhoons caused the ETCVT to exhibit a negative extremum followed by a positive extremum.All Type I,II,and III typhoons tended to result in typical ETCVT fl uctuations in the surface mixing layer above the depth of 50-100 m,while Type II typhoons were more likely to induce ETCVT fl uctuations in the subsurface layer.The fi ndings of this study enhance understanding of ETCVT extrema that occur following typhoon passage,which is valuable for short-term physical-biogeochemical studies both in the study region and in areas downstream owing to the large net volume transport changes induced by typhoons.

On December 18,2023,the MS 6.2 Jishishan earthquake occurred in the northeastern region of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau,causing heavy casualties and property damage in Gansu and Qinghai Provinces.In this study,we integrate space imaging geodesy,finite fault inversion,and back-projection methods to decipher its rupture property,including fault geometry,coseismic slip distribution,rupture direction,and propagation speed.The results reveal that the seismogenic fault dips to the southwest at an angle of 29.The major slip asperity is dominated by reverse slip and is concentrated within a depth range of 7-16 km,which explains the significant uplift near the epicenter observed by both the Sentinel-1 ascending and descending InSAR data.Moreover,the teleseismic array waveforms indicate a northwest propagating rupture with an overall slow rupture velocity of~1.91 km/s(AK array)or 1.01 km/s(AU array).

Micro,Small,and Medium Enterprises’Cross-Border Business Strategies

This paper explores the operational strategies of cross-border micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Against the backdrop of globalization and digitalization, cross-border trade has become one of the important pathways for many MSMEs to achieve growth and competitive advantage. Firstly, the paper outlines the concept and characteristics of cross-border MSMEs, as well as the analysis of their operational environment in the context of globalization, including political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors. Secondly, the paper proposes operational strategies for cross-border MSMEs, including international market selection and positioning, cross-border marketing strategies, supply chain management, cross-border financial management, and cross-border risk management. Finally, the paper summarizes the importance of effectively implementing these strategies for cross-border MSMEs to seize international market opportunities, reduce operational risks, and enhance competitiveness and profitability.

Typhoon-induced wind waves in the northern East China Sea during two typhoon events:the impact of wind field and wave-current interaction

We examined the influences of the wind fi eld and wave-current interaction(WCI)on the numerical simulation results of typhoon-induced wind waves in the northern East China Sea(NECS)using the coupled Simulating Waves Nearshore+Advanced Circulation(SWAN+ADCIRC)model.The simulations were performed during two typhoon events(Lekima and Muifa),and two widely used reanalysis wind fields,the Climate Forecast System Version 2(CFSv2)from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP)and the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts(ECMWF)Reanalysis(ERA5),were compared.The results indicate that the ERA5 and CFSv2 wind fields both reliably reproduced the wind variations measured by in-situ buoys,and the accuracy of the winds from ERA5 were generally better than those from CFSv2 because CFSv2 tended to overestimate the wind speed and the simulated significant wave height(SWH),particularly the peak SWH.The WCI effects between the two wind field simulations were similar;these effects enhanced the SWH throughout the nearshore NECS during both typhoons but suppressed the SWH on the right side of the Typhoon Muifa track in the deep and off shore sea areas.In summary,variations in the water depth and current propagation direction dominate the modulation of wave height.

Alkynes are versatile synthons in organic synthesis,as well as important structural moieties in bioactive molecules.Recently,transition metal-catalyzed hydroalkynylation of alkenes has been developed with reactive alkenes and alkenes bearing directing groups.However,the regioselective hydroalkynylation of simple alkenes is still challenging.Herein,we have developed a palladium-catalyzed Markovnikov hydroalkynylation of unactivated terminal alkenes,which provides an efficient approach for the synthesis of branched alkynyl compounds under mild conditions.This reaction features excellent functional group tolerance,good reaction yields and excellent regioselectivity.Moreover,the asymmetric hydroalkynylation reaction has also been achieved with moderate enantioselectivity by introducing a sterically bulky chiral Pyox ligand.

Preparation of Laser Cladding Coating Undercooling Cu-based Alloy and Co on Non-equilibrium Solidification Structure

The effect of the gradient content of Co element on the solidification process of Cu-based alloy under deep under cooling conditions was explored.The non-equilibrium solidification structure of the under cooled alloy samples were analyzed.It is found that the rapidly solidified alloy has undergone twice grain refinement during the undercooling process.Characterization and significance of the maximum undercooling refinement structure of Cu60Ni35Co5 at T=253 K were analyzed.High-density defects were observed,such as dislocations,stacking faults networks,and twinning structures.The standard FCC diffraction pattern represents that it is still a single-phase structure.Based on the metallographic diagram,EBSD and TEM data analysis,it is illustrated that the occurrence of grain refinement under high undercooling is due to stress induced recrystallization.In addition,the laser cladding technology is used to coat Co-based alloy(Stellite12) coating on 304 stainless steel substrate;the microstructure of the coating cross-section was analyzed.It was found that the microstructure of the cross-section is presented as columnar crystals,planar crystals,and disordered growth direction,so that the coating has better hardness and wear resistance.By electrochemical corrosion of the substrate and coating,it can be seen that the Co and Cr elements present in the coating are more likely to form a dense passivation film,which improved the corrosion resistance of the coating.

In-Plane Dynamic Crushing Behaviors of a Vertex-Based Hierarchical Auxetic Honeycomb

Auxetic metamaterials,which exhibit the negative Poisson’s ratio(NPR)effect,have found wide applications in many engineering fields.However,their high porosity inevitably weakens their bearing capacity and impact resistance.To improve the energy absorption efficiency of auxetic honeycombs,a novel vertex-based hierarchical star-shaped honeycomb(VSH)is designed by replacing each vertex in the classical star-shaped honeycomb(SSH)with a newly added self-similar sub-cell.An analytical model is built to investigate the Young’s modulus of VSH,which shows good agreement with experimental results and numerical simulations.The in-plane dynamic crushing behaviors of VSH at three different crushing velocities are investigated,and empirical formulas for the densification strain and plateau stress are deduced.Numerical results reveal more stable deformation modes for VSH,attributed to the addition of self-similar star-shaped sub-cells.Moreover,compared with SSH under the same relative densities,VSH exhibits better specific energy absorption and higher plateau stresses.Therefore,VSH is verified to be a better candidate for energy absorption while maintaining the auxetic effect.This study is expected to provide a new design strategy for auxetic honeycombs.

An Improved Method for Approximating the Infinite-Horizon Value Function of the Discrete-Time Switched LQR Problem

This paper considers the problem of approximating the infinite-horizon value function of the discrete-time switched LQR problem.In particular,the authors propose a new value iteration method to generate a sequence of monotonically decreasing functions that converges exponentially to the value function.This method facilitates us to use coarse approximations resulting from faster but less accurate algorithms for further value iteration,and thus,the proposed approach is capable of achieving a better approximation for a given computation time compared with the existing methods.Three numerical examples are presented in this paper to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
