Novel hybrid method to predict the ground-displacement field caused by shallow tunnel excavation

Based on machine-learning(ML) and analytical methods, a hybrid method is developed herein to predict the ground-displacement field(GDF) caused by tunneling. The extreme learning machine(ELM), as a single hidden layer feedforward neural network, is used as an ML model to predict maximum settlement smaxof the ground surface. The particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm is applied to optimize the parameters for the ELM method, namely, weight and bias values from the input layer to the hidden layer. The mean square error of the k-fold cross validation sets is considered the fitness function of the PSO algorithm. For 38 data samples from published papers, 30 samples are used as the training set, and 8 samples are used as the test set. For the test samples, the error of five samples ranges between-5 and 5 mm. The error of only one sample is slightly greater than 10 mm. The proposed PSO-ELM method demonstrates good prediction performance of smax. A deformation parameter of the nonuniform displacement mode for the tunnel cross-section is calibrated based on predicted smax. When the determined nonuniform displacement mode is used as the boundary condition of the tunnel cross-section, the GDF of a shallow circular tunnel is analytically predicted based on the complex-variable method prior to tunnel excavation. For a specific engineering case,i.e., the Heathrow Express tunnel, the proposed PSO-ELM-analytical method can well predict the surface-settlement trough curve, horizontal displacements at different depths, and vertical displacements above the tunnel.

Penetration resistance of Al_(2)O_(3) ceramic-ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE)composite armor:Experimental and numerical investigations

To enhance the protective performance of ceramic composite armor,ballistic penetration experiments were conducted on Al_(2)O_(3) ceramic-ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE)composite armor with different thickness *** damage and failure modes of hard projectiles and ceramic-fiber composite targets were *** recovered projectiles and ceramic fragments were sieved and weighed at multiple stages,revealing a positive correlation between the degree of fragmentation of the projectiles and ceramics and the overall ballistic resistance of the composite *** simulations were performed using the LS-DYNA finite element software,and the simulation results showed high consistency with the experimental results,confirming the validity of the material *** results indicate that the projectile heads primarily exhibited crushing and abrasive *** projectile fragments mainly resulted from tensile and shear stress-induced *** failure modes of the composite targets included the formation of ceramic cones and radial cracks under high-velocity *** UHMWPE laminated plates exhibited interlayer separation caused by tensile waves,permanent plastic deformation of the rear surface bulging,and perforation failure primarily due to shear *** extended numerical simulations,while maintaining the same areal density and configuration of9 mm Al_(2)O_(3) ceramic+12 mm UHMWPE laminated composite armor,the thickness configurations of the Al_(2)O_(3) ceramic and UHMWPE laminated backplates were varied,and various thicknesses of UHMWPE laminates were simulated as the cover layer for the ceramic *** simulation results indicated that the composite armor configuration of 10 mm Al_(2)O_(3) ceramic+8 mm UHMWPE composite armor increased energy absorption by13.48%.When altering the cover layer thickness,a 4 mm UHMWPE+9 mm Al_(2)O_(3)+8 mm UHMWPE composite armor demonstrated a 27.11%improvement in energy abso

Built-in electric field influence on impurity-free vacancy disordering of InGaAs/InP quantum well structure

Built-in electric field may enhance or retard the impurity-free vacancy disordering (IFVD) during rapid thermal annealing (RTP) by imposing a drift on charged point defects. Built-in electric field is at the interface between dielectric layer and top layer of the structure. Subsequent rapid thermal annealing leads to different intermixing results due to different field directions on InP cap layers in different doping types. Experimental results also show different influences of the built-in field on the two sublattices largely due to different charge numbers of point defects.

Anomaly distribution of ionospheric total electron content responses to some solar flares

Previous studies have shown that the ionospheric responses to a solar flare are significantly dependent on the solar zenith angle(SZA):the ionospheric responses are negatively related to the *** largest enhancement in electron density always occurs around the subsolar ***,from 2001 to 2014,the global distribution of total electron content(TEC)responses showed no obvious relationship between the increases in TEC and the SZA during some solar *** these solar flares,the greatest enhancements in TEC did not appear around the subsolar point,but rather far away from the subsolar *** distribution of TEC enhancements showed larger TEC enhancements along the same *** distribution of anomalous ionospheric responses to the solar flares was not structured the same as traveling ionospheric *** anomaly distribution was also unrelated to the distribution of background neutral *** could not be explained by changes in the photochemical process induced by the solar ***,the transport process could be one of the main reasons for the anomaly distribution of ionospheric responses to the solar *** anomaly distribution also suggests that not only the photochemical process but also the transport process could significantly affect the variation in ionospheric electron density during some solar flares.

A facile method to prepare cellulose fiber-based food packaging papers with improved mechanical strength,enhanced barrier,and antibacterial properties

Generation of longitudinally polarized multi-segment optical needles by tightly focusing RPBG beam

In this paper,an effective method to garner sub-wavelength longitudinally polarized multi-segment optical needle sequence by using a specially designed hybrid filter(HF) in a high numerical aperture(NA) objective focusing system is *** HF is coupled by a binary phase transmission function and a multi-segment modulation function,and the binary phase filter is designed by the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and acts on the radially polarized Bessel Gaussian(RPBG) beam to obtain a longitudinally polarized optical needle with long depth of focus(DOF,6λ) and a sub-wavelength transverse spot size(0.430λ).The optical needle is with high uniformity of 98% and high beam quality of 96%,and the negligible sidelobe is 15%.On this basis,the multi-segment optical needle sequence with tunable spacing or number can be realized by the multi-segment modulation *** is found that the HF makes the generation of multi-segment optical needle sequence more flexible and *** research has broad application prospects in material processing,particle acceleration,particle capture and other fields.

Impact of High Sodium Diet on Neovascularization and Osseointegration around Titanium Implant:An in Vivo and in Vitro Study

Objective A high sodium(HS)diet is believed to affect bone metabolism *** its impact on osseointegration of titanium(Ti)implants holds significant implications for postoperative dietary management of implanted *** This investigation probed the impact of sodium ions(Na^(+))on neovascularization and osteogenesis around Ti implants in vivo,utilizing micro-computed tomography,hematoxylin and eosin staining,and immunohistochemical ***,in vitro experiments assessed the effects of varied Na^(+)concentrations and exposure durations on human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)and MC3T3-E1 *** In vivo,increased dietary sodium(0.8%-6.0%)led to a substantial decline in CD34 positive HUVECs and new bone formation around Ti implants,alongside an increase in inflammatory *** vitro,an increase in Na^(+)concentration(140-150 mmol/L)adversely affected the proliferation,angiogenesis,and migration of HUVECs,especially with prolonged *** MC3T3-E1 cells initially exhibited less susceptibility to high Na^(+)concentrations compared to HUVECs during short-term exposure,prolonged exposure to a HS environment progressively diminished their proliferation,differentiation,and osteogenic *** These findings suggest that HS diet had a negative effect on the early osseointegration of Ti implants by interfering with the process of postoperative vascularized bone regeneration.
