AIM： To determine the effect of body mass index （BMI） on the characteristics and overall outcome of colon cancer in Taiwan. METHODS： From January 1995 to July 2003, 2138 patients with colon cancer were enrolled in this study. BMI categories （in kg/m2） were established according to the classification of the Department of Health of Tai- wan. Postoperative morbidities and mortality, and survival analysis including overall survival （OS）, disease- free survival （DFS）, and cancer-specific survival （CSS） were compared across the BMI categories.27 kg/m2） patients. Being female, apparently anemic, hypoalbuminemic, and having body weight loss was more likely among underweight patients than among the other patients （P 〈 0.001）. Underweight patients had higher mortality rate （P = 0.00.7） and lower OS （P 〈 0.001） and DFS （P = 0.002） than the other pa- tients. OS and DFS did not differ significantly between normal-weight, overweight, and obese patients, while CSS did not differ significantly with the BMI category. CONCLUSION： In Taiwan, BMI does not significantly affect colon-CSS. Underweight patients had a higher rate of surgical mortality and a worse OS and DFS than the other patients. Obesity does not predict a worse survival.

Natural enzymes have been praised highly as ideal catalysts, presumably owing to their remarkable advantages of high efficiency,high selectivity, and mild reaction conditions. The reports of chemical simulation and systematic synthesis of natural enzymes such as peroxidase(POD) are rare because of their complex biological structures. POD represents a large family of oxidoreductases and offers a wide range of applications in many fields of science. Recent advance in the fusion of nanomaterial, catalysis, and biochemistry has inspired the development of artificial enzymes implemented with desired catalytic features of natural ***, we review the redox chemistry of POD and compare its catalytic performance to graphene-based nanomaterials(G-NMs)as POD mimetic nanoenzymes bases on catalytic center, binding site, and carrier function. Based on the viewpoints of stereo chemistry and molecular kinetic and dynamics in heterogeneous system, we evaluate and compare the suitability of different NMs as artificial enzyme constituent. We propose that reevaluates design strategies of graphene-based peroxidase(G-POD) mimetic materials and emphasizes on their selectivity(role as catalytic center, binding site, or carrier) is of uttermost.

This study discusses the experimental result of the viscoplastic response and col- lapse of sharp-notched 316L stainless steel tubes with different notched depths subjected to cyclic bending. The tube bending machine and curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus were used for conducting the symmetric curvature-controlled cyclic bending. To highlight the viscoplastic behavior, three different curvature-rates, 0.0035, 0.035 and 0.35 m-1s-1, were controlled. Ob- servations of a certain curvature-rate reveal that five almost parallel lines corresponding to five different notch-depth （0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mm） tubes were presented in the experimental relationship between the cyclic controlled curvature and the number of cycles needed to pro- duce buckling on a log-log scale. However, the slopes for the three different curvature-rates are different. An empirical formulation was proposed to simulate the aforementioned relationship. When comparing with the experimental findings, the simulation was in good agreement with the experimental data.

AIM:To study whether vascular endothelial growth factor messenger RNA (VEGF mRNA) in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissues obtained after curative resection has a prognostic ***: Using a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-based assay, VEGF mRNA was determined prospectively in liver tissues of 50 controls and in HCC tissues of 50 consecutive patients undergoing curative resection for ***: Among the isoforms of VEGF mRNA, VEGF165 and VEGF121 were expressed. By multivariate analysis, a higher level of VEGF165 in HCC tissue correlated with a significant risk of HCC recurrence (P=0.038) and significantly with recurrencerelated mortality (P=0.045); while VEGF121 did not. Other significant predictors of HCC recurrence included cellular dedifferentiation (P=0.033), an absent or incomplete capsule(P=0.020), vascular permeation (P=0.018), and daughter nodules (P=0.006). The other significant variables of recurrence related mortality consisted of vascular permeation (P=0.045),and cellular dedifferentiation (P=0.053). The level of VEGF mRNA in HCC tissues, however, did not significantly correlate with tumor size, cellular differentiation, capsule, daughter nodules,vascular permeation, necrosis and hemorrhage of ***: The expression of VEGF mRNA, especially isoform VEGF165,in HCC tissues, may play a significant and independant role in the prediction of postoperative recurrence of HCC.

Electromigration in Cu has been extensively investigated as the root cause of typical breakdown failure in Cu interconnects. In this study Cu nanowires connected to Au electrodes are fabricated and observed using in situ transmission electron microscopy to investigate the electro- and thermo-migration processes that are induced by direct current sweeps. We observe the dynamic evolution of different mass transport mechanisms. A current density on the order of 106 A/cm^2 and a temperature of approximately 400 ℃ are sufficient to induce electro- and thermo-migration, respectively. Observations of the migration processes activated by increasing temperatures indicate that the migration direction of Cu atoms is dependent on the net force from the electric field and electron wind. This work is expected to support future design efforts to improve the robustness of Cu interconnects.

To our knowledge, stercoral perforation of the colon is rarely seen with fewer than 90 cases reported in the literature till date. We explored the principles of management to prevent impending mortality in five patients with this condition. Five patients, two males and three females, whose median age was 64 years, had sustained stercoral perforation of the sigmoid colon. Chronic constipation was the common symptom among these patients. Three patients underwent a Hartmann＇s procedure and another two were treated with segmental colectomy with anastomosis and diverting colostomy. There was one surgical mortality and the other patients had an uneventful hospital stay. Timely intervention to prevent and/or treat any associated sepsis along with extensive peritoneal lavage and surgical intervention to remove diseased colonic tissue at the primary stercoral ulceration site coupled with aggressive therapy for peritonitis are key treatment modalities in salvaging patients presenting with stercoral perforation of the colon.
