Component regulation in novel La-Co-O-C composite catalyst for boosted redox reactions and enhanced thermal stability in methane combustion

A novel La-Co-O-C (LC-C) composites were prepared via a facile co-hydrothermal route with oxides and glycerol and further optimized for methane catalytic activity and thermal stability via component regulation.It was demonstrated that Co3O_(4)phase was the main component in regulation.The combined results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS),temperature-programmed desorption of oxygen (O_(2)-TPD),temperature-programmed reduction of hydrogen (H_(2)-TPR),temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia/carbon dioxide (NH_(3)/CO_(2)-TPD) revealed that component regulation led to more oxygen vacancies and exposure of surface Co_(2)+,lower surface basicity and optimized acidity,which were beneficial for adsorption of active oxygen species and activation of methane molecules,resulting in the excellent catalytic oxidation performance.Especially,the (3.5)LC-C (3.5 is Co-to-La molar ratio) showed the optimum activity and the T50and T90(the temperature at which the CH_(4)conversion rate was 50%and 90%,respectively) were 318 and 367℃,respectively.Using theoretical calculations and in situ diffuse reflection infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy characterization,it was also found that the catalytic mechanism changes from the “Rideal-Eley” mechanism to the “Two-term” mechanism depending on the temperature windows in which the reaction takes place.Besides,the use of the “Flynn-Wall-Ozawa” model in thermoanalytical kinetics revealed that component regulation simultaneously optimized the decomposition activation energy,further expanding the application scope of carboncontaining composites.

Pinellia Total Alkaloids Modulate the GABAergic System in Hippocampal Formation on Pilocarpine-Induced Epileptic Rats

Objective:To investigate the neuromodulatory effect of pinellia total alkaloids(PTA)on the gamma-aminobutyric acidergic(GABAergic)system in epileptic rats,and preliminarily evaluate the anti-epileptic effect of PTA.Methods:Ninety-one male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to a control group(n=17)or an epileptic group(n=74)using computer-generated random numbers.Status epilepticus(SE)was induced with pilocarpine in the epileptic group.Epileptic rats that survived SE were randomly divided into 4 groups,namely an epilepsy group(n=13),a topiramate(TPM,60 mg/kg)group(n=12),a high-dose PTA(800 mg/kg)group(n=12),and a low-dose PTA(400 mg/kg)group(n=10).Treatments were given intragastrically once daily for 14 days.The control group and epilepsy group received normal saline.Spontaneous recurrent seizures(SRSs)were monitored 8-h daily for 7 days after treatment.Then,the hippocampal formation tissues were collected.GABA level was measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Protein and mRNA expression levels of glutamate decarboxylase 65(GAD65),GABA transporter-1(GAT-1),GABA transaminase(GABA-T),and GABAA receptor(GABAAR)α4,α5,γ2 andδsubunits were measured using Western-blotting analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction.Results:PTA lowered the incidence and frequency of SRS(both doses vs.the TPM group,P>0.05).Compared with the epilepsy group,PTA increased the levels of GABA(both doses P<0.01)and GAD65(mRNA,800 mg/kg,P<0.01),and suppressed the levels of GAT-1(mRNA,800 mg/kg,P<0.01;400 mg/kg,P<0.05),GABA-T(mRNA,both doses P<0.01),and GABAARδsubunit(protein,800 mg/kg,P<0.05)andγ2 subunit(protein,both doses P<0.01).PTA upregulated the low-expressed mRNA levels of GABAARα5 subunit(400 mg/kg,P<0.01),δsubunit(800 mg/kg,P<0.05),andγ2 subunit(400 mg/kg,P<0.05).Conclusions:PTA regulated the GABAergic system through modulating GABA levels and the expression levels of GAD65,GAT-1,GABA-T,and GABAARα4,α5,γ2 andδsubunits.PTA may exert antiepileptic effects on the pilocarpine-induced epilepsy model.

Two-dimensional(2D)transition-metal dichalcogenide materials(TMDs)alloys have a wide range of applications in the field of optoelectronics due to their capacity to achieve wide modulation of the band gap with fully tunable compositions.However,it is still a challenge for growing alloys with uniform components and large lateral size due to the random distribution of the crystal nucleus locations.Here,we applied a simple but effective promoter assisted liquid phase chemical vapor deposition(CVD)method,in which the quantity ratio of promoter to metal precursor can be controlled precisely,leading to tiny amounts of transition metal oxide precursors deposition onto the substrates in a highly uniform and reproducible manner,which can effectively control the uniform distribution of element components and nucleation sites.By this method,a series of monolayer Nb_(1−x)W_(x)Se_(2)alloy films with fully tunable compositions and centimeter scale have been successfully synthesized on sapphire substrates.This controllable approach opens a new way to produce large area and uniform 2D alloy film,which has the potential for the construction of optoelectronic devices with tailored spectral responses.

To the Editor： Zika virus （ZIKV） was first isolated from a rhesus monkey in the Zika forest in Uganda It is an emerging arbovirus of the Flaviviridae family, which includes dengue, West Nile, yellow fever, and Japanese encephalitis viruses, and causes a mosquito-borne disease transmitted by the Aedes genus. ZIKV was demonstrated explosion recently in American countries, especially in Brazil, Venezuela, and so on.We reported a case of laboratory-confirmed ZIKV infection imported into China from Venezuela. The patient developed fever, rash, myalgia, headache, and conjunctivitis after returning to China from Venezuela on February 6, 2016. Serological investigations revealed positive ZIKV-specific real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）.

A digital microfluidic system with 3D microstructures for single-cell culture

Despite the precise controllability of droplet samples in digital microfluidic(DMF)systems,their capability in isolating single cells for long-time culture is still limited:typically,only a few cells can be captured on an electrode.Although fabricating small-sized hydrophilic micropatches on an electrode aids single-cell capture,the actuation voltage for droplet transportation has to be significantly raised,resulting in a shorter lifetime for the DMF chip and a larger risk of damaging the cells.In this work,a DMF system with 3D microstructures engineered on-chip is proposed to form semi-closed micro-wells for efficient single-cell isolation and long-time culture.Our optimum results showed that approximately 20%of the micro-wells over a 30×30 array were occupied by isolated single cells.In addition,low-evaporation-temperature oil and surfactant aided the system in achieving a low droplet actuation voltage of 36V,which was 4 times lower than the typical 150 V,minimizing the potential damage to the cells in the droplets and to the DMF chip.To exemplify the technological advances,drug sensitivity tests were run in our DMF system to investigate the cell response of breast cancer cells(MDA-MB-231)and breast normal cells(MCF-10A)to a widely used chemotherapeutic drug,Cisplatin(Cis).The results on-chip were consistent with those screened in conventional 96-well plates.This novel,simple and robust single-cell trapping method has great potential in biological research at the single cell level.

Highly active and durable Pd-based electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction(EOR)play a crucial role in the commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells(DEFCs).However,the poisonous intermediates(especially adsorbed CO species(COad))formed during the EOR process can easily adsorb and block the active sites on Pd electrodes,which in turn limits the catalytic efficiency.Hence,we present a series of Pd-based composites with a strong coupling interface consisting of Pd nanosheets and amorphous Bi(OH)_(3)species.The incorporation of Bi(OH)3 can induce an electron-rich state adjacent to the Pd sites and effectively separate the Pd ensemble,leading to excellent CO tolerance.The optimal Pd-Bi(OH)_(3)NSs catalyst manifests a mass activity of 2.2 A·mgPd^(-1),which is 5.7 and 2.0 times higher than that of Pd NSs and commercial Pd/C catalyst,respectively.Further CO-stripping experiments and CO-DRIFTS tests confirm the excellent CO tolerance on Pd-Bi(OH)3 NSs electrode,leading to the enhanced EOR durability.

LAMOST spectral survey——An overview

LAMOST （Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope） is a Chinese national scientific research facility operated by National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences （NAOC）. After two years of commis- sioning beginning in 2009, the telescope, instruments, software systems and opera- tions are nearly ready to begin the main science survey. Through a spectral survey of millions of objects in much of the northern sky, LAMOST will enable research in a number of contemporary cutting edge topics in astrophysics, such as discovery of the first generation stars in the Galaxy, pinning down the formation and evolution history of galaxies - especially the Milky Way and its central massive black hole, and look- ing for signatures of the distribution of dark matter and possible sub-structures in the Milky Way halo. To maximize the scientific potential of the facility, wide national par- ticipation and international collaboration have been emphasized. The survey has two major components： the LAMOST ExtraGAlactic Survey （LEGAS） and the LAMOST Experiment for Galactic Understanding and Exploration （LEGUE）. Until LAMOST reaches its full capability, the LEGUE portion of the survey will use the available ob- serving time, starting in 2012. An overview of the LAMOST project and the survey that will be carried out in the next five to six years is presented in this paper. The sci- ence plan for the whole LEGUE survey, instrumental specifications, site conditions, and the descriptions of the current on-going pilot survey, including its footprints and target selection algorithm, will be presented as separate papers in this volume.

Deletion of the topoisomeraseⅢgene in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Sulfolobus islandicus results in slow growth and defects in cell cycle control

Topoisomerase III （topo III）, a type IA topoisomerase, is widespread in hyperthermophilic archaea. In order to interrogate the in vivo role of archaeal topo III, we constructed and characterized a topo III gene deletion mutant of Sulfolobus islandicus. The mutant was ,viable but grew more slowly than the wild-type strain, especially in a nutrient-poor medium. Flow cytometry analysis revealed changes of the mutant in growth cycle characteristics including an increase in proportion of cells containing either more than two genome equivalents or less than one genome equivalent in exponentially-growing cultures. As shown by fluorescence microscopy, a fraction of mutant cells in the cultures were drastically enlarged, and at least some of the enlarged cells were apparently capable of resuming cell division. The mutant also shows a different tran- scriptional profile from that of the wild-type strain. Our results suggest that the enzyme may serve roles in chromosomal segregation and control of the level of supercoiling in the cell.

Advances in plastid transformation for metabolic engineering in higher plants

The plastid(chloroplast)genome of higher plants is an appealing target for metabolic engineering via genetic transformation.Although the bacterial-type plastid genome is small compared with the nuclear genome,it can accommodate large quantities of foreign genes that precisely integrate through homologous recombination.Engineering complex metabolic pathways in plants often requires simultaneous and concerted expression of multiple transgenes,the possibility of stacking several transgenes in synthetic operons makes the transplastomic approach amazing.The potential for extraordinarily high-level transgene expression,absence of epigenetic gene silencing and transgene containment due to the exclusion of plastids from pollen transmission in most angiosperm species further add to the attractiveness of plastid transformation technology.This minireview describes recent advances in expanding the toolboxes for plastid genome engineering,and highlights selected high-value metabolites produced using transplastomic plants,including artemisinin,astaxanthin and paclitaxel.
