The 13 November 2016 Kaikoura earthquake occurred in the northeastern coastal region of the South Island, New Zealand. The M_w 7.8 mainshock generated a complex pattern of surface ruptures, and was followed within about 12 hours by three moderate shocks of M_w ≥ 6.0. Here we use teleseismic waveforms to invert for the source rupture of the Kaikoura earthquake. The resulting slip-distribution model exhibits insignificant slip near the hypocenter and three pockets of major slip zones with distinct senses of motion. The mainshock started from a rupture near the hypocenter, grew into thrust on shallow crustal faults ~50 km northeast of the hypocenter, and then developed into two slip zones: a deeper one with oblique thrust and a shallower one with almost purely right-lateral strike-slip. locations of the thrust and strike-slip motions in the slip-distribution model agree well with reported coastal uplifts and horizontal offsets. The overall slip pattern is dominated by horizontal motion, especially at shallow depth, due to the partitioning of thrust and strike-slip motions above the subduction zone megathrust. Aftershock distribution suggests that most aftershocks tend to occur near the edges of the major slip zones of the mainshock. This observation on aftershock locations may provide useful information for seismic hazard assessments after large earthquakes.

A recent study published in Molecular Psychiatry proposes a cellular mechanism that may contribute to decreased insulin production in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).1 Using a combination of cell culture experiments,animal models and studies in T2DM patients,the authors show that an up-regulation of tau inβ-islet cells can inhibit pancreatic insulin secretion through changes in microtubule assembly.

Genomics-driven derivatization of the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoid variecolin:Creation of an unnatural analogue with improved anticancer properties

Azodicarbonamide(ADC) and benzoyl peroxide(BPO) are utilized as wheat flour additive and dough conditioner. Semicarbazide(SEM) and benzoic acid(BA) are the degradation product of ADC and BPO, respectively. SEM shows carcinogenicity and the excessive BA is harmful to human’s liver. Hence, ADC and BPO have been forbidden using as wheat flour additives in China and EU. This study developed the Quick Polar Pesticides(QuPPe) extraction technique coupled to LC-MS/MS method to determine the ADC, BPO, SEM, and BA in wheat flour and its products. The ethyl acetate pH adjusted of 6 was used as extraction solvent for extracting the four analytes from wheat flour sample. In this research, 2-nitrobenzaldehyde and triphenylphosphine were used as agents for derivatization of SEM and ADC, respectively. The extraction and derivatization conditions were systematically optimized in this study. Under the optimal conditions, the linearity of the proposed method ranged 10-2000 ng/g for ADC, 20-2000 ng/g for SEM, and 100-20000 ng/g for BPO and BA. The limits of detection(loDs) and limits of quantitation(loQs) were 0.4-1.6 ng/g and 1.4-5.3 ng/g, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precisions of the developed method were 3.6-14.7% and 6.63-14.4%, respectively. The proposed method was applied to analyze the additives and metabolites in wheat flour samples and the ADC were detected in the range of 33.7-3600 ng/g, and the SEM were detected of 86.7 ng/g.

A biosynthetic gene cluster for the bioactive fungal sesterterpenoids variecolin(1)and variecolactone(2)was identified in Aspergillus aculeatus ATCC *** production of 1 and 2 was achieved in Aspergillus oryzae by expressing the sesterterpene synthase VrcA and the cytochrome P450 ***,the replacement of VrcB with homologous P450s from other fungal terpenoid pathways yielded three new variecolin analogues(5-7).Analysis of the compounds’anticancer activity in vitro and in vivo revealed that although 5 and 1 had comparable activities,5 was associated with significantly reduced toxic side effects in cancer-bearing mice,indicating its potentially broader therapeutic *** study describes the first tests of variecolin and its analogues in animals and demonstrates the utility of synthetic biology for creating molecules with improved biological activities.

Railway switch machine is essential for maintaining the safety and punctuality of train operations.A data-driven fault diagnosis scheme for railway switch machine using tensor machine and multi-representation monitoring data is developed *** existing methods,this approach takes into account the spatial information of the time series monitoring data,aligning with the domain expertise of on-site manual ***,a multi-sensor fusion tensor machine is designed to improve single signal data’s limitations in insufficient ***,one-dimensional signal data is preprocessed and transformed into two-dimensional ***,the fusion feature tensor is created by utilizing the images of the three-phase current and employing the CANDE-COMP/PARAFAC(CP)decomposition ***,the tensor learning-based model is built using the extracted fusion feature *** developed fault diagnosis scheme is valid with the field three-phase current *** experiment indicates an enhanced performance of the developed fault diagnosis scheme over the current approach,particularly in terms of recall,precision,and F1-score.

How Can Practitioners Support Citizen Volunteers in Disaster Risk Reduction? Insight from “Good and Ready” in Aotearoa New Zealand

Global and national policy frameworks emphasize the importance of people's participation and volunteers' role in disaster risk reduction. While research has extensively focused on volunteers in disaster response and recovery, less attention has been paid on how organizations involved in disaster risk management can support volunteers in leading and coordinating communitybased disaster risk reduction. In 2019, the New Zealand Red Cross piloted the Good and Ready initiative in Auckland,Aotearoa New Zealand, with the objective to empower local people in resilience building with a focus on volunteers and community participation. This research examined the positive and negative outcomes of Good and Ready and investigated volunteers' experiences in the disaster resilience initiative. It involved the codesign of a questionnaire-based survey using participatory methods with Good and Ready volunteers, the dissemination of the survey to gather volunteers' viewpoints, and a focus group discussion with participatory activities with Red Cross volunteers. The findings highlight that a key challenge lies in finding a balance between a program that provides flexibility to address contextual issues and fosters communities' ownership, versus a prescriptive and standardized approach that leaves little room for creativity and self-initiative. It pinpoints that supporting volunteers with technical training is critical but that soft skills training such as coordinating, communicating,or facilitating activities at the local level are needed. It concludes that the sustainability of Good and Ready requires understanding and meeting volunteers' motivations and expectations and that enhancing partnerships with local emergency management agencies would strengthen the program.
